UPND president Hakainde Hichilema following proceedings during the meeting to demand for the release of the draft Zambia constitution.

Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema says his party would only consider being part of an opposition alliance once a new republican constitution has been delivered.

Mr. Hichilema said the UPND holds the position that it is the new people driven constitution that will create a basis upon which a legal framework will be created to construct a legally binding alliance among political parties.

Mr. Hichilema noted that going into an alliance by word of mouth at the time the country is characterized by low levels of trust and confidence will be a waste of time.

The UPND leader said this is why his party’s focus now is to ensure that a new constitution which is owned by the people is delivered before the 2016 general elections.

Mr. Hichilema said that whether President Michael Sata and the Patriotic Front (PF) government like it or not, a new constitution owned by the people of Zambia will be delivered before the 2016 general elections.

He said the constitution is for the people and that President Sata cannot stop a process which he himself supported while in the opposition.

Mr. Hichilema told Qfm News in an interview that any attempts at this end to stop the constitution making process will only mean greediness on the part of the President.

  1. HH is right, an alliance can only work if there is running mate close, not this rubbish of memorandum of understanding.

    • A sworn opportunist has finally put his politics of expedience front and centre.

His politics devoid of principles but guided primarily by selfish interests.

    • It is my sincere hope that HH has been misquoted in this article. Otherwise, I shall, for once, agree with Gen @1.2 for stating that “a sworn opportunist has now put his politics of expedience front and centre”. It is truly selfish of HH to take such a position when Zambia is experiencing the most vile leadership in the histroy of the nation. People are supposed to rally together in unity to ensure that this dictator is chased from plot one at the earliest opportunity. HH clearly knows that he is a front runner among the opposition and instead of showing leadership and unity, greed seems to have taken over. Legally binding stuff has no place at this stage but strategic planning for the benefit of the nation. He has undoubtedly sown a “seed of doubt” in me..I hope he comes out to…

    • HH may be a good leader to many Zambians who oppose the PF. But surely I am not going to vote for HH because the man is Tonga and hates Bembas. The campaign in North Western Province where I work is publicly “no Bemba rule.” Such type of campaign should be ignored by all peace loving Zambians.

Surprisingly the no Bemba vote is making a lot of impact here to the extent that I wouldnt be surprised if we started hearing of ethnic cleansing under HH rule.

I want to repeat this. I can vote for HH, but only because he is a Zambian and very intelligent but surely not because he is Tonga who hates Bembas.

Let his campaign teams go out there in NW, Southern and Western Provinces and tell people that Bembas are people just like all Zambians.

    • Good bless you my brother! Never use the word hate to describe towards other Zambians. Hate is what has destroyed coutries like Syria, Iraq , Somalia and so on.

    • We understand your ego being a kolwestan implying the rest of us are stupid and inferior for having supported your fellow Kolwestans in all past elections. You always accuse other tribes of tribalism when you know you are the worst grouping in this vice. However my advice is that you start practicing accepting the inevitable: HH is the next president of Zambia, a young, vibrant, educated , cultured and stinking rich son of the soil. Start preparing to emmigrate accross the Luapula river to keep a semblance of your non-existent ego!! Shame on you tribalist.

    • Ask your mother properly. Your real biological father is actually Tonga. That name you carry is just for that man who is the husband of your mother.

    • This is not a joke, Seriously have a self examination and question yoself, if indeed you have the spirit of God in U.. then ask yourself this question..is there hate in the Kingdom of God…Repent my brother….Blog or no blog, salvation is really…jokes aside…

    • You really shouldn’t be so hateful, you risk puncturing a blood vessel somewhere in your brain. It’s not worth it, is it?

  2. The reason Alliances dont work in Zambia is evryone proposing to have an alliance wants to be at the helm. and you can tell from what HH is saying, its not about anything but the math to get to plot 1.

  3. PF won without an alliance. Democracy is about numbers. Check which part of Zambia is highly populated.

  4. UPND here on the copperbelt has come with a storm, even street venders and taxi drivers including street kids are now geared for a new leader in HH. those that think with their tribe will remain in the sinking boat. all progressive minds have shifted their vote come 2016. PF may win a few parliamentary seats on the CB but certainly not presidential. sata alala, alala, sata alala alala

  5. UPND should just go it alone. If the re is too much mistrust amog politicians then its better to be alone. Time is ripe for HH to start behaving like a President in waiting come 2016. All major political UPND aside there is too much infighting and no proper direction.Time now for HH and team to increase momentum and remain focused to wrestle power from PF. Come 2016 people are watching which POLITICAL party will make sense to them and provide good leadership. If HH and UPND misses this chance then they should just forget it.

  6. those hate sentiments by those dull illiterate chaps against Tongas will not work..HH is spot on..watch the space..

  7. I think HH is right. This issue of just coming oit tht we ve MADE AN ALLIANCE DOESNT WORK WELL for Zambia.

    There should b a RoadMap.

    Viva HH Viva UPND.

  8. Hh thinks the new constitution is the magic bullet. Iye uluse. To the PF, simply get the constitution, remove the 50+1 clause and release it.

    • @chinama
50+1 is not about HH, its about what the zambian people have said that is what we want. how does HH come in? this is a sign that someone is shallow upstairs. or you are the pf cadres that have just been unleashed on the internet just to oppose anything positive about HH. you have lost it

    • @matipa, I am not in the habit of exchanging insults, people who bare your stage name are very descent. You do not know me and you have no idea what I do in life. If you want insults please go back to where you belong at ZWD site. You are some of the people who have brought filth on this once clean site. Just debate and if do not like what other peoples opinion simply avoid commenting if you cannot hold your tiny brain together.

  9. You are stupi…..d. Why hate Tongas? Tongas are my cousing. You just envy them. They are true Zambians, they have been in Zambia for 1000 years. You are from DRC.

    • Your argument is daft. When the Tongas migrated into what is now called Zambia is neither here nor there because every tribe migrated at different times. Whoever was in Zambia when the map was drawn up is Zambian period. Get over it.

  10. As long as Zambians continue putting leaders from poor provinces like Muchinga and northern, forget about development. It is a fact and documented that these are poor provinces who make no contribution to the national economy. Look at the stealing going on by the poor people from the poor people they pretend to represent. We need a president who will not go to state house to steal but to lead.

    • Every province makes a contribution in one way or another. Unfortunately you think cows are the only resource. Talking about stealing, where did HH get his wealth from? Are these people from the North :

21.01.2013 Lucky Mwiinga died after being brutally beaten by an angry mob when he was caught stealing a car radio system from a car in Matero Township.

28.07.2013 Wilfred Hiyamwa, 38, and Hichilema Hiyamwa, 23, both of Hapende Village of chief Mungaila in Namwala District were arrested for stealing 500 caatle from HH’s farm.
24 Jun 2013 – In Chadiza, Lackson Banda, aged about 25 years, was lynched by the irate farmer after he was caught stealing maize.

6 Mar 2014 – Prominent Lusaka lawyer Nellie Mutti was arrested and charged with 33 counts relating to theft and forgery.

  11. @Janza, even pipo from DRC are human beings. Despite that there Congolese who are hostile to Zambians, I have met very honest Congolese. Forget about you settling a 1000 years or whatever. It is a country for all. You are still living in the Stone Age. This is new world my friend. Mulimbe.

  12. No good at all! Now watch out. 1. upnd allies with weak opposition parties 2. Push PF out 3. New government(upnd, mmd, pp, other parties alliance) will bicker for power or control, or hh will betray opposition parties. 4. Zambia will be divided or hh’s plan for Southern province to be independent like Biafra. So remember and mark my words if hh win in 2016.

  13. Every time an alliance is formed, its HH who wants to lead. The first one with FDD and others,it was HH. Even when he knew that SATA was more popular,HH wanted to be a leader of the pact. Mwanawasa asked him to be his vice president , he declined because he wanted just plot 1. To me,HH is a failed hero who lacks strategy. Sata went to plot 1 even without 50 + 1 or new constitution.I have no sympathetic vote for HH. Yes,HH can be the next president but he lacks strategy and cutting edge, and yet they praise him to be very educated. God help us.

    • @Umwaume, He has a bachelor’s degree in economics just like RB but his is from UNZA. They also praise him to be a businessman with high acumen but when we search the radar of the top 100 rich men in Africa, he is nowhere to be found, the category was expanded to 500, again he was missing and would wonder exactly why his supporters think he so rich. To me he is just one ordinary Zambia who can afford three square meals a day and some automobiles to ride. I lived in Zambia for 38 years but never heard of this guy until the great one Anderson Kambele Mazoka passed on. Since i knew of his existence, I cannot pin point a business entity that can be ascribed to him except shares here and there.

  14. LT has been compromised. Do you know that they have put in an inbuilt click towards UPND positive numbers or otherwise. when you vote for or against UPND, the other increases or declines automatically. I know this post will be put on moderation. No wonder insults are allowed when they come from the likes of wanzelu and 142

  15. HH IS INDIRECTLY INCITING THE OPPOSITION ALLIANCE TO JOIN HIM IN THE CALL TO PUSH FOR THE CONSTITUTION BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN CRYING FOR HIM (HH) TO JOIN THEM. HH HOPES WITH THAT STRATEGY HE WILL AMASS NUMBERS TO HELP HIM IN TWO YRS TIME. IN MY OPINION IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO TELL AT THIS STAGE WHICH WAY THE WIND WILL BLOW POLITICALLY GIVEN THE WRANGLES IN MMD. WHICHEVER WAY MMD GOES AFTER THE CONVENTION SOME MEMBERS ARE LIKELY TO JOIN UPND WHILE SOME WILL JOIN PF. DEPENDING ON WHO JOINS WHICH PARTY THE ISSUE OF 50%+1 COULD STILL BE A TRICKY ONE. HAVING SAID THAT I DON’T SEE PF GIVING IN TO THE NEW CONSTITUTION BEFORE 2016 ELECTIONS. THEY’LL BE SHOOTING THEMSELVES IN THE FOOT, BESIDES THE CURRENT CONSTITUTION DOES NOT COMPEL THEM TO DO SO.

  16. “Mr. Hichilema said that whether President Michael Sata and the Patriotic Front (PF) government like it or not, a new constitution owned by the people of Zambia will be delivered before the 2016 general elections.”
Whether you like it or not your presidential ambitions will die a natural death and you’ll never see state house ka under 5 and your Bantu 3 collection
    (HH) Hashinda Hainyelawila

  17. With barely 2 years before the next elections, HH primary focus is the constitution. To me it looks like the guy has conceded that he cant win the elections by simple majority and the only way is through an alliance with failed parties. This shows two things in this leader: 1) Lack of vision and principle: For as long as MMD helps him become the president, they are a perfect party. He forgets that people voted MMD out only 2 years ago and can actually see through his selfishness; 2) Self centredness and egoism- He still thinks that having taken UPND leadership through force and money, he can also become a president through the same means. While I admire HH for his business acumen, he lacks foresight as a leader and he cannot play a unifying figure, given his current tribal accusations.

    • Let me tell you what people see and feel right now. They see poverty and they feel hungry. They see very expensive essential commodities and they feel cheated by PF. If you think the ordinary voter sits down and starts analysing HH’s strategies, you’re being naive. The only ones with that kind of luxury are us people in cyberspace and those who can afford this economy. Otherwise the majority and these are the poor do not give a toss about HH’s methods. They want a better life and the PF has lamentably failed to provide that. The Chililabombwe loss to UPND may seem trivial to most of you but to the strategists and forecasters, this should set off alarm bells. Chingola and KCM is in a mess, Contractors leaving, jobs being lost and you think PF is still loved??

  18. It’s OK for anyone to be president if he/she is voted democratically. In a simple majority, election results are easily manipulated through rigging. Mr. Sata himself was a victim of rigging at one time. He was visibly angry about it. The late Mr. Anderson Mazoka was also a victim of rigging at another time.

The reason people are excited about the new constitution is not because HH or a Tonga wants to be president. The new constitution is designed to correct the weakness of a simple majority system, by introducing the 50% plus 1 clause. The 50% plus 1 system has been tried elsewhere, even in neighboring Zimbabwe. Though not perfect, I think it is a fairer system. When Sata was cheated out of the vote, he cried the loudest. Sata is not Tonga.

  19. HH please please, DO NOT talk of alliances. They do not work; they are destructive, have no philosophical and ideological focus and tend to have a nebulous and uncommitted membership. FDD, ADD, NADA, CNU and even MMD were all alliances and have all lamentably failed. Stick to the UPND and those who see the sense that we UPNDers see will join in to help us make up the numbers to sink the boat. 2016 shall not be a year of the repeat of the short-lived PF-UPND debacle of 2010/2011 please napapata HH. Please stay away from those vultures.

  20. The reason more northerners have ruled Zambia, than those from other regions is not mere accident. The simple majority system favors the Bemba tribal grouping. They already command a simple majority under that system. This is what gave the likes of Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe and Michael Chilufya Sata the impetus.

The 50% plus 1 system removes that unfair advantage the Bemba tribal group has been enjoying; and levels the play field for all the many tribal groups across Zambia. In effect, what the 50% plus 1 systems is likely to achieve, is to kill tribal politics in Zambia.

It does not surprise me that the northerners are aggressively fighting against the new constitution. On the other hand, are they not being selfish for wanting to continue ruling for ever?

  21. IT APPEARS PEOPLE DON’T KNOW HH WELL YET. IF THE OPPOSITION ALLIANCE AGREE FOR HH TO JOIN THEM, ONE THING THEY MUST KNOW IS THAT HE IS COMING IN AS THE BOSS NOTHING LESS. IF HE WINS THE ELECTIONS HE WILL STAND ON THE PLATFORM AND DECLARE:

“Na Muntu Wafwa Pamunshi, Wa Mukowa Wafwa Pamushi, Mwamana Kulila, Mbutwakalila Kuno Kuli Ba Chikusu, Mulakala Nobamukowa Kubandika… Simulyazhina Saa… Mulabika Mutuba Na Mulabika Wa Mukowa?”

AT THIS POINT HE CHOOSES WHO HE WANTS TO BE IN GOVERNMENT AND NO ONE HAS POWER OVER HIM. DON’T THINK HE WOULD PREFER PEOPLE FROM OTHER OPPOSITION PARTIES AT THE EXPENSE OF THE UPND MEMBERS THAT SUFFERED WITH HIM. THIS WOULD BE THE START OF AMAGEDON, FRANK BWALYA WILL KILL MORE CHICKENS.

    • WISEMAN FROM THE SOUTH
You are dull, how? see. What HH meant is that you Wiseman CANT be even a cancellor in Malawi unless in DRC where you come from. Why din’t you put a Katuba local candidate? You insulted us when you put a Congolese to stand in Katuba. Because of you shallowness you will say TRIBAL when I tell you this.

  22. @Kudos, many a time I have laughed to myself at what motivates you to have such a pathological hatred for a man like HH. But when I look at your skull, I imagine a backward primeval primate. Perhaps you cant help it. Please stick to the subject at hand or provide new insight different from HH’s thinking. But no, you would rather dive into personalities and vile name calling. This is sick.

  23. WISEMAN FROM THE SOUTH

  24. POLITICAL ALLIANCE NOT A WELCOME IDEA WITH UPND

WE THE MEMBERS OF UPND ARE NOT GOING TO ALLOW THE TALK OF ALLIANCE TO START NOW . WE DONT WANT AGAIN TO BE CALLED NAMES WHEN OTHER PARTIES IN TROUBLED WATERS BREAK AWAY FROM THE ALLIANCE AND PEOPLE TO COMMENCE SCANDALISING UPND AND HH AS THE CASE WAS WHEN PF SHOWED DISRESPECT TO OUR PRESIDENT HH . PEOPLE CONDEMNED HH FOR NO APPARENT REASONS. THIS TIME AROUND WE ARE PREPARED TO GO IT ALONE. LET ALONE THOSE WHO WANT TO JOIN UPND DO SO OUT OF CONVICTION THAT UPND IS THE PARTY OF THE MOMENT WHICH IS A PREFERRED CHOICE NOW. SO WE CAN NOT AND WILL NOT ALLOW THIS TALK TO CORRUPT OUR MINDS ANY MORE. TIME WILL COME AND ITS OUR TIME NOW IN 2016 TO FORM THE NEXT GOVERNMENT. PF HAS ALREADY LOST FAVOURS BECAUSE OF THEIR FAILED SOCIAL – ECONOMY &…

  25. IF THE ALLIANCE WON IT WOULD BE A GOVT WITH MOST TROUBLES, FIRST AND FOREMOST HOW DO YOU PLEASE ALL THESE PARTIES, EACH PARTY LEADER WOULD WANT HIS OR HER MEMBERS’ INTEREST MET. THIS WOULD BE THE GENESIS OF PROBLEMS, IF YOU THINK PF HAS HAD PROBLEMS WAIT UNTIL A TIME WHEN THE ALLIANCE WOULD WIN. HH WANTS YOUR SUPPORT NOW BUT WAIT TILL HE’S IN THE DRIVING SEAT.
