Consult us before deciding, ZNUT tells government

Share

The Zambia National Union of Teacher (ZNUT) has challenged government to consider the plight of teachers before making certain decisions that concern them.

ZNUT General Secretary, Roy Mwaba says government’s decision to extended learning hours for pupils at primary school was unfair on the part of teachers.

Mr. Mwaba said government should first look at the working conditions of teachers in the country before rushing into extending learning hours in schools.

He told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that extending learning hours was however good for the pupils as they would acquire more knowledge.

He explained that in rural areas, teachers have more than one class to attend to and therefore, government should also consider increasing such workers’ salaries.

Mr. Mwaba said teachers were key stakeholders in education matters hence the need for government to consult them when making such decisions.

Recently, Minister of Education, Geoffrey Lungwangwa announced that government had with immediate effect increased the minimum hours of learning from two to five hours a day for primary school pupils.

And Mr. Mwaba has welcomed government’s decision not to allow schools in cholera affected areas to open until the problem was addressed.

He said it was good that government considered the health of teachers and pupils by not allowing certain schools to open.

He said the cholera situation was serious in the country hence the need for all Zambians to work together in fighting the disease.

Mr. Mwaba noted that it was sad that 44 years after independence, the sanitation system in the country was still bad and causing water borne diseases.

Mr. Mwaba added that there was need for the local authority to work on the blocked drainage system due to the floods which he said was the major contributor to the cholera outbreak.

He has since called on the public to maintain a clean environment to prevent contracting diarrheal diseases such as cholera.

  5. Good idea, now does our infrastructures that we have going to accommodate the pupils at primary school.Iam reliably informed that the reason our schools were running two/three streams per day was due to insufficient classrooms to equal a large population of pupil at particular schools.Maybe this time we built enough classrooms to accommodate the ever increase demand for primary school place on Govnment run schools. This increase in learning time should much quality in terms of what the pupils will get from Govnment schools. To teachers kukosa bane no more time for extra tuition yazanda boyi.

  6. the govt should learn to consult its citizens..they have put up dates for the people in finland, denmark and norway to meet the diplomat this weekend to apply for new passports in his presence.this info has not been circulated and they think everyone checks the website everyday.calling them, all they say is because they recieved the infor very late so they couldnt inform everyone but thats the best they can do to help zambians.it seems they think all zambians are in capital cities, they forget about planning people have 4 days to plan the trip and expensence. its high time they just learned to communicate.iv never seen such disorganisation.and they call this a favour.

  7. Please do not extent hours without working on the Quality of the material!! Only if you intend to keed the pupils away from the Streets so that they do not sell Michanga notu ma Joints

  21. Jamaco the sad part is the embassies blame someone from Zed for not giving then adiquate infor.so they wont say much but they want everyone to have applied by feb as they say they will no longer accept old ones.now the trick thing is if you have renewals in process and the current are called off then the next permit cant be issue if they have to stamp on your pass as you need a valid document.then they say if we do it with this guy who is coming it will take a month and a half to process but i dont know how long it will take if we do it at our own time.my problem is they did not consider our position in all this.

  22. Govt are taking people for ride, thats what did with all africa game without consult they went on the withdraw the tournament. Now they are at it again with these issue.

I once heard that a Zambian once bought bisciuts meant for dogs. He couldn’t believe how big the packet was and said it will last him a month. This guy I hear was just new in the UK and ever since when he goes to the supermarket he always avoids the section that sells pet food.

  66. “Recently, Minister of Education, Geoffrey Lungwangwa announced that government had with immediate effect increased the minimum hours of learning from two to five hours a day for primary school pupils.”

The concerns by Mr Mwaba are very good and deserve to be taken seriously. On another note, have the syllabi been changed by being update also to match with the increase of learning hours by 150%? Also, consider increasing allowances for all affected teachers as this move has enchroached on their PRIVATE JOBS to meet the terrible salaries and allowances teachers currently get paid.

    ====
LT 2008 Award Winner. =; for Zambia in 2011.

  67. increasing of learning hours is a leap in the right direction assuming that the curricula has been adjusted accordingly. i have nothing against teachers, but heh working only for two hours a day and resting for close to five months in a year is not productive.compared to other ministries like health, agriculture and home affairs, (police service), teachers get better perks and have a lot of time on their hands to create wealth. Look at Police officers who dont even have a union to speak for their plight, they work more than enough hours and usually do not even know what leave is. ZNUT dont just talk, you must be seen to be progressive as well.
