Government warns councils against illegal land allocation

Local Government and Housing Minister Emmanuel Chenda
Local Government and Housing Minister Emmanuel Chenda

Government has warned of stern action against councilors in the habit of abandoning their civic responsibilities for illegal allocation of land at the expense of serving communities.

Local government minister Emmanuel Chenda says his ministry will not entertain inappropriate procedures in land allocation.

Mr. Chenda advised mayors, council chairpersons, councilors and principal officers to show exemplary leadership and observe highest moral standards that will reverse the negative public perception of councils.

The minister said this in a speech read on his behalf by his deputy Nicholas Banda at the two day local government association of Zambia extra ordinary conference held in Solwezi District, yesterday.

Mr Chenda has since appealed to the local government association to sensitize its members on the consequences of illegal land allocation.

Speaking when he delivered a vote of thanks, Chinsali Town Clerk Patrick Kambita said with the political will shown by government, councils are determined to deliver to promises of people despite obstacles being faced.

  1. I bought a plot in solwezi at Humphrey Mulemba Villa Park almost 2 years ago. the land in question is still being occupied by illegal land settlers and they seem to be putting up structures despite my plee with the Solwezi Municipal Council to give me my plot so that I start constructing.

Unfortunately, nothing is being done and the council is just looking at these so called illegal settlers with no voice whatsoevever. the last time I went there, I was told i have to negociate with them and compensate them myself. now this so called minister says they shouldnt be removed after my money has already been paid and the illegal settlers still there.

bloggers, what can I do to settle this as from the look of things the council isnt helping in any way?

    Ngafweniko mwe bantu na chula.

    • Take the matter to the court of law. The council will either compensate you or remove those thieves by court order.

  2. I think its time we all agreed that all governments have failed to manage land in zambia except Unip with its moto “land is valueless” now we dont know who owns what where to get land and where we will be tomorrow. Its total confussion too bad due to selfishness and lack of directions. If only cadres can be managed and people given small pieces of land as long as they show that they can build habitable structures then we can move forward not this rubbish

  3. Take the law in your own hands.. ask a nganga to bewitch them……….a pure waste of time going to court or to council. These guys are all corrupt.
