An Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) vehicle being used in the Buleya Local Government by-election in Kalabo has been involved in a head-on collision with an ox-cart.

Both Police and ECZ confirmed the incident which occurred yesterday at Nalionwa area around 19:00 hours to ZANIS in Kalabo.

According to police the driver of the ECZ Toyota Land Cruiser registration number ABF 1532, Nawa Mulenga in a company of ECZ officers collided head on with an oncoming ox cart after the oxen lost control as a result of the lights from the vehicle.

The vehicle window screen was smashed but no life was lost.
Police have since charged the person in charge of the ox cart for failing to control animals on the road according to section 209 of the Road traffic Act number 11 of 2002.

This is the fourth accident in the district involving a motor vehicle and an ox cart in less than three months.

  1. I think it is easier to control a car than control animals, driver must have been speeding.A normal driver at least will whats 100 -200 meters in front of him which gives him enough time to reduce speed and stop to allow the animals to pass.

    • @JP, I agree with you. Unless the driver was speeding, which is likely to have been the case, it is easier to control the car than to control the animal in that situation. Charge the driver of the car for over speeding, not the driver of the ox-cart.

  2. This is unfair..! The driver must be charged for careless driving and the owner of ox-cat compensated.

  3. You will expect a lot more of these accidents when UPND forms government. Cars will be replaced with ox-carts on many major roads while soft drinks will be chibwantu.

  4. The driver of the vehicle should have been charged I bet his lights were at full beam…the reporter forgets to note if the animals survived his disaster….this journalism is getting worse by the week.
