Let’s unite against counterfeit products in Zambia-ZACA

Share

The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) says more political will must be exercised in the country in order to rid the market of counterfeit products.

ZACA Executive Director, Muyunda Ililonga, said the isolated incidents where the Zambia police service have raided some factories and shops trading in counterfeit products were not enough to rid the markets of these dangerous products.

Mr. Ililonga said counterfeit products that are imported into the country greatly outnumber those that are manufactured locally, adding that it was for this reason that relevant institutions should partner with the police so that the problem is not fought in isolated activities.

He told ZANIS in Lusaka today that while the effort of the police in trying to curb the vice is appreciated, there is need for relevant government institutions tasked to safeguard the interest of consumers to widen their operations.

Mr. Ililonga said a large scale and multi-sectoral operation, which must involve the participation of all relevant stakeholders, needs to be undertaken if the lives of the people are to be safeguarded.

He said counterfeit products have the potential to harm the health of the consumers and could in most cases lead to death.

Mr. Ililonga further said the problem has been getting worse and was wide spread not only along the line of rail but also in rural areas.

He said government through its relevant institutions should not only raid factories and shops but put up stringent measures at border posts if the issue of counterfeit products is to be successfully dealt with.

Mr. Ililonga has meanwhile disclosed that his association has received complaints from the public over the sale of 25 millilitre sachets of liquor by unlicensed traders.

These sachets of liquor are sold at very minimal prices such that even young people were able to access them.

Mr. Ililonga expressed concern that empty sachets of this liquor were contributing to liter in the cities and towns in the country, defeating the “keep Zambia clean and Healthy” exercise.

He has since called on government to completely outlaw the sell of such liquor by unlicensed traders and prosecute any person who will be found selling the commodity to underage persons.

  5. May I ask, What good do our leaders find in these Chinese kansi? If there are crooks here on earth, the Chinese are the worst. The other ones also are the Congolese, they have no regards or fear for the owners of the country. Anyway the problem is the immigartion dept with their porus borders.

    Hi Bloggers

  9. I sometimes hate how this place turns into a chartroom.

I wonder why we have services like mig33 [dot] com provided where someone can go into the Zambia Lusaka chat room and chat away instead of using this place where serious issues are supposed to be discussed for meaningless chats.

this is just the way I feel anyway and this is just my opinion

What i mean is there are no local benefits, there is no tax paid on these things.

Moreoever, they exploit the pipo who make them, they even use children.

  12. Hey Bloggers long time! Lets not blame the chinese or any foreigner about counterfeit products, lets blame ourselves for the quality of people we choose to lead us, they know nothing! Genuine Chinese products are actually good, am sure my friends out there will agree with me. Most of the electronics you find all over the world are made in china, go to America or Europe you will prove me ryt. These counterfeit products are just customized for countries like Zambia & made by small scale chinese industries coz of our lax in standards. Finish!

So whats your point about Turkey? do they have these things.

i know they make a lot of things for other European countries, but Zambia does not make, it is a dumping plca.

  14. counterfeit products are not easy to get rid of especially in poor countries because people simply cant afford the real or original products, but I believe with more efforts by the law enforcement people, good strategies and laws to go with, it can be managed. **==

  15. Counterfeit products will not get out of our country, because of poverty. When you are poor, you would want to get something affordable. Let me say the chinese do make disposable goods especially for african markets yes but they dont make fake shoe polish, repack cement with sand, put aniodised salt in iodised salt packs. All these are done by zambians them selves. Go to chipata at the bus station, you will find small packs of gin, in real sense that is kachasu repacked. These chinese do have fake products yes like some electronics and clothing designer lables. Oh how I wish I could get in touch with Victor Muyunda Ililonga, can someone help me with which town he is in. Went to same school

  16. #49 I know the guy. He did that song called ‘Green Fever’ ka ? This is not a Lost-But-Found site ! We are discussing what to do naba mwenye iwe ulefwaya akapuba kanobe !

  17. 50: thank you very much, I have never known myself to be akapuba.I hope you are not talking of the brother Rikki the musician. Ba mwenye they will never leave Zambia, we have already given them the powers to stay forever. Idi Amin did something to them in Uganda. Imagine even saying ziko niyako, ndalama nizanga. Infact chinese are far better, because they have built you a new chilanga cement plant, roads but these chapwekas/nsamyas are to no good. Enjoy your day

  18. Konbanwa ba CHE GUAVARA I don’t know if you are a soccer fun but did you watch the game between the Samurai and Kangaroos last night? I was there l-)

  19. Namwe ba ZACA u do not sensitise people on what they should do or report to who over counterfiet products.

This vise is doing more harm to the local people especially in the Agriculture inputs & pharmacitical products they pose very big danger to the unsuspecting zambians.
