CHIPILI member of Parliament (MP) Davies Mwila yesterday questioned the involvement of former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa in active politics when she is still enjoying benefits from Government.
In a point of order in Parliament, Mr Mwila wanted to know if acting Leader of Government Business in the House Yamfwa Mukanga was in order to keep quiet when Mrs Mwanawasa has joined active politics.
“Mr Speaker Sir, is Mr Mukanga in order to keep quiet when the former First Lady is participating in active politics yet she still receives benefits in form of fuel and security while campaigning at political rallies?” Mr Mwila said
In his ruling, Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini said Mr Mukanga was perfectly in order to keep quiet over the matter and advised Mr Mwila to file an urgent question that would be processed quickly.
Bwana Mwila. Cite a legal provision that you can effect to bar her from politics. Why shouldn’t she participate? As matters stand, the constitutional clause that reclaims retirement benefits from former presidents who return to politics does not extend that sanction to spouses.

I am 62 in March 2015. I will definitely vote for RB to prove to all and sundries that we might be old but are wiser and active. We have a lot to contribute to society. Life has not ended for us and we do not want degradation by anybody, no discrimination from anybody. I am going out to talk to all elderly people and request them to turn out in big number and vote for their age mate to send the right signal to sundries and all that old age is not an end and certainly not a disgrace. We might not be very fit for manual jobs but certainly very valuable for planning, translating our wisdom and first hand experience into development projects, direction to new generation and encouragement and mentor the learners on the job.

This MP is a dog. Maureen was not the President. There is no legal provision that says a surviving spouse can only have the benefits if she herself is also retired.
