Government has abolished the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) which has been facing operation challenges resulting in workers going months without salaries.
Tourism and Arts Minister Jean Kapata said ZAWA will now exist as a government department in the ministry of Tourism and Arts.
Ms Kapata told parliament in a ministerial statement delivered this morning that the decision has been done in a bid to address the many problems that ZAWA has been facing.
The Minister said the move follows a Cabinet decision of November 2014 which agreed to transform ZAWA into a government department. She said her ministry will assimilate the ZAWA staff into the agency that will be created to look into the affairs of wildlife and the game parks.
“The members of staff who will not be happy with the new move and conditions of service will be paid their terminal benefits and new staff members will be recruited to run the wildlife affairs well,” she said.
She says the implementation of the reforms will not result in job losses but will increase efficiency in the running of the ZAWA affairs.
Ms Kapata told the house that the Zambia Wildlife Act will be repealed and replaced with the government agency that will be created.

Good move mama. it has been long overdue. Workers are delighted. there too much theft, nepotism, tribalism and supression of qualified hardworking staff, runninung the institution by civilian men and women. this confusion will come to and end.
the adjusted salaries benefitef a few. some officers at ZAWA 05 had never had salairies conformed to PSS scale because government was misinformed that they are on contract when in not they are pensionable workers. they have been left in the cold such that their juniors are getting more than them.

Nubian Princess, you have NO IDEA what you are talking about. Rangers put their lives on the line every day for protection of rhino and other animals. I don’t think you have a clue what rangers do and would do well to do some research before you comment on an international forum. Talk rather of efficiency and effectiveness!
