400 grass thatched houses to be electrified

The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) will this year electrify over 400 thatched houses in Mwansabombwe district of Luapula Province.

REA Chief Executive Officer Geoffrey Musonda said REA will during the same period electrify two secondary schools and a market in this district.
Mr. Musonda could however not disclose the amount of money the project will gobble but said it will be implemented in conjunction with the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) limited.

He said this in Lusaka today during the handover of shirts worth K27, 000 to the Midlands Mutomboko ceremony organising committee.

And Mr. Musonda said the donation was part of REA’s corporate social responsibility initiative of preserving culture in the country by supporting traditional ceremonies.

Meanwhile, Midlands Mutomboko ceremony organising committee chairperson Misheck Kaoma thanked REA for the donation saying it will add value to the ceremony.

Mr. Kaoma said his committee was targeting to raise a total of K500, 000 for the successful hosting of this year’s Mutomboko ceremony.

The 2015 Mutomboko ceremony of the Lunda speaking people of Luapula province will be held on July 26 in Mwansabombwe district.

  1. If I was the owner of one of these thatched houses, I’d ask for the money earmarked for electrifying my house and use it to put a tin roof instead. I’d rather have a good roof over my head than electricity.

    • Why target thatched houses when teachers and nurses in the rural areas have no electricity and running water. We need to look at the lives of these people so they could at least have some common life style with those living in urban areas. If really the government aims at giving quality education and health they need to address issues that will add value to these employees.

    • Hope they don’t start catching fire.

Why not use solar energy? Zambians, Zambia’s so called “think tanks” just thinking elections.

    • The connection fee is a mere K150.00 and this is not enough to roof even a toilet cubical

  2. True@Nyau. I’d rather have a brick house with a tinned roof than have malaiti…..

  3. Magaret thatched houses is not a good idea. Villagers will be electrocuted during rain season because water will be penetrating. Make them put mazenke on the roof instead of grass. Safety should be number one priority.

  4. Some govt priorities are really difficult to understand, I know this issue has not been well researched and I’m afraid there’s going to be catastrophes. A grass thatched house doesn’t work well with electricity. Every year the villagers change the grass from the roofs and electricity will pose a challenge to these mad, wood and thatched houses.

  5. In my village 95% of houses are of iron sheets. I don’t know which village these houses are from
