Government has described as devastating the flood situation in western Province.
Deputy Minister in the Office of the Vice President, Guston Sishilima, says the situation requires urgent attention to alleviate human suffering.
Mr. Sichilima was speaking shortly on arrival from Western Province yesterday, where he led a team comprising Communications and Transport Deputy Minister Mubika Mubika, Works and Supply Deputy Minister, Mundia Ndalamei, Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Vice President Davies Sampa and other senior government officials on a spot check of the flood situation.
He has, however, said government will work tirelessly with other stakeholders in mitigating the caused by the floods in Western and other affected Provinces.
Mr. Sichilima, further, cautioned people living in the flood affected areas to be alert on the rising water levels and move to higher grounds to avoid loss of lives and property.
The floods, which have been considered to be the worst since 1969 in Western Province, have left 49 schools submerged, destroyed about 85 per cent rice fields and 45 per cent of maize fields with a total of 1,500 households affected.

Hmmm… First there is drought… then there are floods… farmers can only farm after rainfall… forrests are cut down for fuel…
I wonder what the solution is.
Seriously, Zambia has massive potential for agriculture, it has some of Africa’s major rivers, huge floodplains, 70% unemployment. This is not brainsurgery, and it cannot be left up to ‘market forces’.
We need the government to alleviate unemployment by instituting works projects that build small and medium sized dams, which farmers can use to double their harvests from once per year to 2 or even 3 harvests per year.
Also, reforestation can be extremely lucrative, if we grow hardwoods like teak.
This minister needs to tell the nation what government will do/is doing ‘to alleviate human suffering’ instead of picking up the watch and telling us the time.
My heart goes to all flood victims in all 15 districts.The government and other business institutions should act promptly.

According to the extent of damage in this article., Massive relief efforts are going to be needed. Govt .better start preparing for adequate relief measures and not letting people start eating green mangoes again.

The Litunga and some NGOs must stop milking the state in the name of responding to flood victims. Every year the floods are considered a disaster as though no one knew what was coming. Villagers must be helped to build floating houses. There are a lot of corrupt people that come from western province, I’m sure one of them can set up a company to build such floating houses so that tax payers money is not abused and misused in western province….sha!!
