Zambia to launch $30m refugee and host communities project

0

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security will today, September 30, 2025, launch the 30 million United States dollars World Bank-funded Zambia Refugee and Host Communities Project grant at Maheba Refugee Settlement in Kalumbila District.

Commissioner for Refugees Tovine Kaneneka said the project, which focuses on legal reforms, smart agriculture and infrastructure such as health, education and road networks, will benefit both the refugee settlement and surrounding host communities.

Mr Kaneneka who was in the company of Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security Principal Public Relations Officer Mwala Kalaluka, paid a courtesy call on Northwestern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Luckson Mulumbi.

Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security Principal Public Relations Officer Mwala Kalaluka oted that the project will harness the economic potential of host communities.

Mr Kalaluka also disclosed that the ministry has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) to extend electricity to the settlement area.

Northwestern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Luckson Mulumbi said the launch is a reminder of government’s commitment to Maheba settlement and its residents.

Smart Zambia expands digital access nationwide

1

The Electronic-Government Division under Smart Zambia says Zambia’s push towards digital transformation has taken a major leap, with all 116 local authorities in the country now connected to the government area wide network.

Smart Zambia Director Infrastructure Management, Paison Chikoye, says the Electronic Government Division has made a lot of progress in ensuring that every citizen can easily access government services.

Mr Chikoye was speaking on a special programme on ZANIS TV dubbed ‘Zambia’s Digital Infrastructure.’

He said Smart Zambia has in the last two years connected all local authorities, district administration offices, government agencies, health facilities and selected education centers to the government network.

“When you look at our mandate, we are basically building the road that gets citizens to access government services online, but before you see the soft services, the hard infrastructure has to be in place,” said Mr Chikoye.

He explained that the country is working in collaboration with SpaceX to deploy Starlink internet services in remote communities through the Zambia Postal Services.

“We procured over 500 Starlink kits in 2023, and these have been deployed to 109 post offices and youth resource centers countrywide. Even in places like Lunga, where one has to travel by boat for hours, people can now access digital services,” Mr Chikoye explained.

He observed that the impact of the Government digitisation programme is already bearing fruit in health and civil registration services.

Mr Chikoye added that patients under the Smart Care programme are no longer carrying bulky files, as their records are instantly available through biometric identification.

“For families in rural Zambia, something as basic as a birth certificate was just a dream for many, but today, it can be printed right at the local district office,” he noted.

Mr Chikoye further noted that the Vision 2030 agenda envisions a digitally inclusive Zambia, where rural and urban citizens can share equal access to government services.

He, however, noted that training the population on how to use digital tools will be key to avoiding “white elephants” in digital infrastructure investment.

“Our appeal is that citizens should embrace this agenda, because it is only when they do so that these digital services can truly make an impact,” he stated.

Zambia will showcase strides made in the digitisation programme at the upcoming Digital Africa 2025 Ministerial Summit in Lusaka scheduled for 7th to 9th October, 2025.

With over 20 African countries attending, the summit is focused on strengthening partnerships, bridging the digital divide and accelerating Africa’s digital integration.

Why Me’ appears in court for mention

0

Francis Kapwepwe, commonly known as ‘Why Me’, yesterday appeared for mention in the Lusaka Magistrate Court.

Kapwepwe is charged with three counts of hate speech and expressing or showing hatred, ridicule or contempt towards individuals based on race, tribe, and place of origin or colour.

On 24th September, 2025, the defence lawyers filed a fresh application regarding the Zambian court’s jurisdiction to hear the matter, following allegations of the accused having been arrested in Zimbabwe.

Following the recusal by Magistrate Peter Mungala from handling the case, Magistrate Idah Mupemo set 9th October, 2025, as the date of ruling on the jurisdiction issue raised in the case of Why Me.

When the matter came up for mention today, Magistrate Fine Mayambu, reiterated that the accused should appear for mention on October 9, 2025.

And in other news, Kasenengwa District Commissioner, Rachael Phiri has cautioned youths against being used as tools of violence ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Ms Phiri says as the country heads to the polls, most young people will be used to instigate violence, a situation which should not be tolerated.

Speaking during a youth town hall meeting in Chingazi ward, Ms Phiri indicated that there was need to preach peace and unity among citizens stating that the move will ensure development is not compromised.

“As youths, people will entice you with money and other gifts but let us not bend to avoid being used for their selfish gain as the country will be conducting an election next year,” she said.

She also called on young people to continue supporting the current administration as it prioritises the interests of youths in the district and the country as a whole.

“Lets ensure to support government of the day under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema,” she said.

Ms Phiri cited the provision of various opportunities such as skills development bursaries as some of the initiatives aimed at uplifting the living standards of young people.

President Hichilema on Three-Day Working Visit to the United Kingdom

12

President Hakainde Hichilema has left for the United Kingdom on a three-day working visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and promoting investment opportunities for Zambia.

In a statement issued by State House, the President is scheduled to meet His Majesty King Charles III in Scotland at the King’s invitation. The visit is expected to reaffirm Zambia’s long-standing ties with the United Kingdom, which date back to the pre-independence era and have expanded into wide-ranging cooperation.

While in London, President Hichilema will attend an investment forum that will bring together business leaders and policy stakeholders to explore opportunities for deeper economic collaboration. He will also hold meetings with UK Government officials to discuss trade, development, and partnership initiatives.

According to State House, these engagements are part of the Government’s broader mission to attract investment, create jobs, and transform Zambia into a competitive economy.

Before departure, the President posted on his official Facebook page, thanking citizens for their prayers and support, and confirming that the visit will focus on advancing investment opportunities for the country.

President Hichilema is expected to return immediately after concluding his official engagements.

Do you still believe alms giving encourages kids to be on the streets?

4

For the record, we’ve been champions of the plight of street kids for several donkey years! We’ve written countless articles about their plight. We’ve shared meals with them even they’ve dug their greasy palms into nshima and discoloured it. We’ve endured freezing nights with them on the streets to offer solidarity to them. We’ve dragged a good number of them to the clinic upon learning of their decomposing genitals. We’ve singlehandedly buried a few of them as we couldn’t locate their families. We’ve reunited some of them with their unwilling relatives.

We’ve been robbed of electronic gadgets after opening our doors to them. We’ve fought running battles with the so-called technocrats who’ve questioned our approach. We’ve almost got entangled in fists of fury with snobs who tended to think interacting with them encourages them to remain on the streets. We’ve endured two marathon walks from Kitwe to Lusaka to petition governments for meaningful interventions.

But lo and behold…….the plight of street kids remains as dire as it was 25 years ago, if not worse. Whether we’ve mounted gigantic billboards discouraging people from giving alms to the street kids from the nation’s capital to Kabwe; and replicated the same in all the Copperbelt towns……they keep turning up on the streets in good numbers.

Where’s the problem? What’s the problem?

A few years ago, we predicted that when they are no longer toddlers, they would be too ashamed to mill around the shops and ask for a “ka coin….” They’d retreat into the townships and cause havoc and terror; hence the so-called junkies lurking in the dark waiting to knife you and get away with your earthly possessions!

Give them another 10 years, where would these junkies be? For those who were not in matebela (diapers) in the 1980s, do you still remember those dark and chilling years when criminal gangs reigned supreme in the Copperbelt? Some semblance of sanity only prevailed when most of them were gunned down, extrajudicially!

Should we stop giving alms to the street kids? Would we rather see them starve to death or indeed rot to death with their STIs? What should be the short and long term solutions to this conundrum?

Kobold Metals to construct Mingomba Mine on the Copperbelt

2

Kobold Metals, a leading American Mining Technology Firm, has announced plans to construct Mingomba Mine, which is expected to be Zambia’s largest copper mine.

During a courtesy call on President Hakainde Hichilema at State House in Lusaka today, Kobold Metals Global Chief Executive Officer, Kurt House, announced that the Mingomba Mine Project to be implemented on the Copperbelt, will begin in 2026, with a groundbreaking ceremony planned for April.

He highlighted over 120,000 metres of drilling, more than the total done at the legacy Loop license since independence, following major exploration successes in the province.

“I just got to Lusaka from our Mingomba Project on the Copperbelt, and I am very pleased to report that we are firing on all cylinders, thanks to our remarkable local leadership and our essential partners at ZCCM-IH, the Presidential Delivery Unit, and various ministries, we’ve been able to move quickly and effectively.

He added, “I have a very exciting announcement for you Mr President, we intend to start construction next year, and we would like to invite you to be our guest of honour at the groundbreaking ceremony.”

President Hichilema has described the Kobold Metals-led Mingomba Copper Project as a flagship example of Zambia’s renewed mining sector, calling it an exciting time for the country as it pushes ahead with economic recovery and industrialisation.

President Hichilema thanked Kobold for choosing to invest in Zambia and emphasised the importance of continued cooperation between government ministries, the private sector, and international partners.

“In just two years, this project has surpassed what has been done on some legacy licenses for decades. That shows what’s possible with a properly structured, investor-friendly environment,” President Hichilema said.

He positioned the Mingomba project as a symbol of Zambia’s broader economic vision, particularly the revival of mining as a key pillar of national growth.

“This is what we intended to do when we came into office, to reconstruct the economy, and the mining sector was always going to be central to that plan, many of our brownfield projects were comatose, sitting on idle assets. We knew they could be brought back to life,” President Hichilema said.

The Head of State further referred to the Mingomba Project as a partnership that reflects decades of cooperation between Zambia and the United States.

“Our relationship with the United States is not in competition with any other. It’s our relationship, built over 60 years, and it must continue to grow beyond changing administrations on both sides,” he said

The President also urged for support in unlocking fairly priced capital for projects like Mingomba which he said was essential to realising Zambia’s full potential.

Minister of Mines, Paul Kabuswe, has hailed the Kobold Metals investment as a turning point for the country’s mining sector, describing it as proof that the government’s strategy to attract responsible, technology-driven capital is bearing fruit.

“This is the proof, like you always say, Mr President, that the taste of the pudding is in the eating. We now taste that pudding, this is the realisation of the vision you laid out in 2021. It is the result of how you traversed the globe to bring investment back into Zambia,” Mr Kabuswe said.

Meanwhile, ZCCM-IH Board Chairperson, Phesto Musonda, said the Mine, expected to produce 400,000 to 500,000 tonnes of high-grade copper annually, has already created 670 jobs, out of its 700 target before beginning the development.

Chama man commits suicide after attacking his wife with a machete

A 24 year-old man in Chama District has allegedly taken his own life by consuming an unknown poisonous substance, a day after attacking his wife with a machete.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner, Robertson Mweemba, confirmed that Medson Kumwenda of Chibalila Village, Chief Kambombo, committed suicide between 04:00 hours on September 27, 2025, and 11:00 hours on September 28, 2025.

Mr Mweemba explained that Kumwenda and his 20-year-old wife, Timanye Mutambo, whom he married in November 2022 and have a two-year-old daughter together, had been living peacefully until rumours emerged that Kumwenda had impregnated another woman, Kota Namfukwe of Chitanda Village.

He said the confrontation over the allegations turned violent on September 27, 2025, when Kumwenda allegedly attacked his wife with a machete, leaving her with severe injuries, including a deep cut on the back of the head and neck, an amputated finger and multiple bruises.

After the attack, Kumwenda fled, and his body was later found by the villagers in a field along the Luumbu river banks with signs of poisoning.

The family has been advised to mark the grave for possible exhumation. His wife is fighting for her life in Chama District Hospital where she is admitted.

Meanwhile, Police in Chilanga has apprehended four suspects in connection with the theft of school property at St. Patrick Primary School.

Zambia Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, says the four suspects arrested include Funwell Changila aged 36, Peter Siame 27, Peter Namilambe aged 26 and Elizabeth Nakamba aged 22 all of Mapepe compound in Chilanga District.

He explained that on September 27, 2025, at around 23:00 hours, Chilanga Police received credible information from informers that some individuals in Mapepe compound were attempting to sell computers.

Mr Hamoonga stated that a team of officers conducted an operation in the early hours of September 28, 2025, which led to the apprehension of three men and one woman.

He pointed out that the operation also resulted in the recovery of school property including computers, fridge, toilet paper, soya chunks and other assorted items, all of which were found in the house where the suspects reside in Mapepe compound.

“The Zambia Police Service extends its sincere gratitude to the members of the public whose timely and valuable information led to the successful arrest of these criminals. The four have since been charged and detained in police custody for the subject offence,” he added.

Mr Hamoonga has urged all members of the public to continue working with the Police to bring to book criminal elements and ensure that communities safer.

President Hichilema calls on Canadians to invest in Zambia’s energy sector

0

President Hakainde Hichilema has called on Canadian experts and investors to develop green energy projects, such as green hydrogen and solar facilities in Zambia.

Speaking at the 4th Canada-Africa Chamber of Business Conference in Lusaka, the President in a speech read for him by Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Chipoka Mulenga, highlighted the country’s need to diversify its energy sources following severe droughts that have impacted hydroelectric power.

ZANIS reports that Mr Hichilema emphasised Zambia’s commitment to partnering with Canada as an equal partner in joint investments across various sectors to promote sustainable development.

He emphasised that government is committed to transforming Zambia into an inclusive, and sustainable economy, emphasising that the country’s vision is clear and set to build a thriving economy that will improve the livelihood of its people.

“We are focused on creating an enabling environment for businesses to flourish, fostering innovation, and attracting both domestic and foreign investment,” he said.

President Hichilema strongly highlighted Zambia’s deliberate strategic position in trade, as a gateway to Southern Africa and beyond.

The President further echoed the proposed Zambia-Canada Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement, which aims to boost investment flows between the two nations, citing that the country remains committed to the Zambia-Canada agreement.

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to concluding the agreement speedily in order to facilitate increased economic cooperation between the two nations.

“We are land-linked, not landlocked, with access to markets across SADC, COMESA, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This positions Zambia as an ideal hub for regional trade,” he added.

Additionally, he noted that though Zambia and Canada enjoy cordial bilateral relations, their bilateral trade and investment levels are still low, hence, the need for more collaborations.

“We are aware that the socio-economic development that we wish to attain as a country, can only be achieved if led by a vibrant private sector, partnerships and joint ventures,” the President noted.

Delivering her speech at the same event, High Commissioner of Canada to Zambia, Emily Burns, remarked that Zambia is adding hundreds of megawatts of renewable energy to its grid, freeing hydro power for households and powering a growing mining sector.

Ms Burns highlighted that Canadian firms are therefore looking forward to building on this progress by establishing new projects that will further strengthen Zambia’s energy security.

Singling out Zambia, she noted that Canada is the single largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), translating into 24 percent of its total FDI stocks that are highly accredited to investments in the mining sector.

Meanwhile, Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) Director General, Albert Halwampa, expressed that good governance and Leadership is the reason investors are flocking to the country.

Mr Halwampa stated that Zambia has experienced a tremendous influx of various investors into Zambia due to its investor friendly policies put in place by the government.

With the foregoing, Mr Halwampa who called on delegates to invest in agriculture, energy, and mining among other key sectors, expressed that this gives a sense of what Zambia as a country could achieve.

Also, delivering his remarks from the private sector, Joe Lombard, Vice Chairperson for an engineering company known as HATCH, noted that he and other Canadian companies are proud to be in Zambia and look forward to future collaborations.

Earlier, Canada-Africa Chamber of Business President, Garreth Bloor, expressed excitement about fostering commercial ties between Canada and Zambia.

Mr Bloor stated that Zambia’s mining sector and rich mineral resources make it an enabling environment for Canadian businesses looking to invest in Zambia and the continent at large.

In his welcoming remarks to Canadian companies, Yosa Yosa, a Partner at May & Co, said Zambia is a partner in progress, citing the symbolic call to action made by President Hichilema, who noted that Zambia is ready for business.

Mr Yosa, welcomed Canadian companies to Zambia, noting that partnerships should be created between the two countries in fostering development and growth.

The two – day Canada-Africa Business Conference has already underscored the benefits of continuing to advance connections between Canadian and African communities.

M’membe Slams 2026 National Budget as “Business as Usual”

1

After the presentation of the 2026 national budget by the Government last week, Socialist Party president Dr. Fred M’membe has criticised the government’s spending plan, describing it as a continuation of failed economic policies.

Finance and National Planning Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane presented the K253.1 billion budget in Parliament last Friday, an increase from last year’s K217 billion. He said the package would be largely financed from domestic revenues amounting to K206.5 billion, representing 81.6 percent of the total budget and 22.3 percent of GDP.

Dr. Musokotwane told Parliament that the government had prioritised education, health, social protection and constituency-level development. He said the Constituency Development Fund would be raised to K40 million per constituency, up from K36.1 million last year, describing it as “a game-changer in transforming the livelihoods of the people.”

He added that the education sector would receive K33 billion, with K2.4 billion allocated for free education and K2.3 billion for the completion and rehabilitation of schools and universities. In higher education, K1.4 billion was set aside for the Higher Education Loans and Scholarship Board to support students from poor families.

The health sector was allocated K26.2 billion, with K6.4 billion going towards the procurement of medicines and medical supplies. The minister said the increase, representing 30 percent more than in 2025, was to fill the gap left by the withdrawal of some external support. “I am happy to hear now and then from colleagues from the health sector that the availability of drugs and medicines is satisfactory across the whole country as opposed to the situation during our early days in government,” he said.

Other key allocations included K15.7 billion for social protection programmes, such as the Social Cash Transfer and pensions, and K1.2 billion for the 2026 general elections. Tax incentives for the energy sector were also proposed to attract investment in electricity transmission and hydroelectricity generation.

While government has described the budget as progressive, Dr. M’membe today issued a statement rejecting the plan. He said the budget reflected “business as usual” and lacked an innovative vision to tackle the country’s economic challenges.

“The budget presented last Friday is, in my view, the definition of insanity. It represents a continuation of a flawed and ineffective course of action, and it is unreasonable to expect better results,” he said.

Dr. M’membe argued that the reliance on foreign investor–driven growth had not delivered tangible benefits for citizens. “After 61 years of independence, it is unacceptable for our country, which is so rich in resources, to still be inhabited by so many who are poor,” he said.

He added that Zambia needed “a fundamental shift in our economic thinking—an independence from a neoliberal bookish, theoretical economic mindset that has repeatedly failed to deliver for the people.”

The budget is now before Parliament for debate and approval.

Zambian Media told to avoid divisive media content that can bring disunity in the country

0

Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Director General, Webster Malido, has challenged the media to avoid divisive media content that can bring disunity in the country.

ZANIS reports that speaking in Chingola over the weekend when he paid a courtesy call on Acting Chingola District Commissioner, Stephen Moonze, Mr Malido also stressed the need for the media to report verified, accurate, objective and balanced information.

He noted that misleading and inaccurate information can lead to election of wrong leaders especially during an election period such as the one that Zambia will soon enter in.

“Inaccurate and misleading information is dangerous as it would disrupt national unity and even lead to election of wrong people in offices especially during campaigns and elections period as people would make voting decisions based on misleading media information.

“As such, l would like to urge broadcasters in the country to be responsible in their operations and stick to responsible reporting that is accurate, objective, truthful and balanced for the country to remain peaceful and united before and after general elections next year,” he said.

Mr Malido further stated that government’s wish is that people have access to information from the local media but warned that broadcasters should control what participants say on their platforms so that other people are not injured.

Chingola District Commissioner, Stephen Moonze, urged the IBA management to be more proactive in order to curb the spread of misinformation and abuse of freedom of expression by some members of the public through broadcasting institutions.

Mr Moonze urged IBA to ensure that broadcasters work within the law to preserve national unity and peace even as the country heads to the 2026 general election in a few months’ time.

“IBA is an important institution as far as freedom of expression is concerned, we have seen when people want to become careless with their utterances, as such IBA should actively come in and control so that broadcasters work within the confines of the law to prevent people from injuring others,” he said.

Later, during a tour of Iwave Radio Station, IBA Board Member, Professor Jimmy Mbale, urged the station management to stick to their registered content category in their programming.

Prof Mbale also encouraged the institution to be ethical and professional in their operations.

Meanwhile, Iwave Radio Station Manager, Lucy Kaonga, and her Promise Television counterpart, Felix Mulenga, complained of load shedding challenges, stating that it is preventing them from conducting smooth broadcasting as they are forced to go off air when there is no power supply.

The two, however, assured IBA management of full compliance with the regulatory authority’s rules in their operations.

FAZ congratulates Power Dynamos, ZESCO United on continental progress

0

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has congratulated Power Dynamos and Zesco United on advancing to the next stage of their respective CAF competitions.

FAZ president, Keith Mweemba, says the qualification of the two sides to the next round of their CAF competitions is a good step for the Zambian game as it tries to reclaim its place on the continent.

In a statement issued to the media by FAZ Head of Media and Communications, Nkewto Tembwe, Mweemba expressed excitement over the victories stating that local teams have endured some struggles on the continent in the last few seasons.

“This should not just be a one-off achievement but a regular occurrence for Zambia to be back at the level where we commanded four slots.

These victories are not just wins for Power Dynamos and Zesco United but they are wins for the entire country. We have always maintained that when we do things the right way, good results will follow,”Mweemba said.

He further noted that Power Dynamos, with the right support and preparation, have the potential to replicate their historic continental success of 1990.

Mweemba also called on the management and sponsors of both clubs to invest thorough preparations ahead of the decisive next rounds.

“These achievements signal that Zambian football is on the right path. With continued support and proper structures, our clubs can go even further and bring glory to our country,” he added.

Power Dynamos booked their spot in the final preliminary round of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League after a hard-fought two-legged encounter against Ivorian giants, ASEC Mimosas, while Zesco United overcame Gabonese outfit Canon 105 via a 5-2 aggregate.

Power Dynamos will meet Uganda’s Vipers FC, as Zesco United will have a date with Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy.

And Mweemba has also congratulated the Under-20 Women National Team for qualifying to the third round of the FIFA Women World Cup after beating Burundi 4-1 over two legs.

Zambia will meet Uganda in the penultimate stage of the qualification with a place in the final round at stake.

Central PS Milner Mwanakampwe wants volunteers in health, education prioritised

0

Central Province Permanent Secretary, Milner Mwanakampwe, has called on education and health authorities in the province to prioritise volunteers in the next recruitment exercise.

Dr Mwanakampwe says volunteers deserve to be rewarded with jobs for the sacrifice.

Speaking when he addressed public service workers in Mkushi District, Dr Mwanakampwe said working without a salary by volunteers is a clear demonstration of their dedication and commitment towards serving humanity.

“We must give them priority in the next recruitment exercise,” Dr Mwanakampwe said.

He stressed that the next recruitment exercise of teachers and health workers should be properly managed at district and provincial levels for it to meet the aspirations of all stakeholders.

Dr Mwanakampwe said those entrusted with the authority to preside over the recruitment of teachers and health workers should not use their positions to disadvantage volunteers.

He assured the volunteers that the provincial administration will closely monitor the recruitment process to ensure that their interest is well taken care of.

The Central Province Permanent Secretary said the onus is on District Education Board Secretaries (DEBS) and District Health Directors to work together with provincial authorities in documenting the names of volunteers.

“I am directing the DEBS and health authorities at district and provincial levels to compile the names of all volunteers in their respective district in readiness for the next recruitment exercise,” Dr Mwanakampwe said.

Government intends to employ more teachers and health workers in the next recruitment exercise to enhance service delivery.

Meanwhile, Government, in partnership with the Global Fund through the Integrated Community Case Management (ICCM) programme, has handed over 290 bicycles and other essential gear to Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Chasefu District of Eastern Province.

The bicycles are part of a broader package of support that includes bags, t-shirts, gumboots, raincoats, pumps, and caps, which are expected to improve mobility and working conditions for CHWs serving in some of the most remote parts of the district.

Speaking during the official handover event, Chasefu District Commissioner, Jimmy Phiri, said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening health systems and ensuring that no one is left behind in accessing primary health care.

“This support is a clear demonstration of how the government is listening to the needs of its people. Through such partnerships, we are not only improving health service delivery but also empowering communities,” he said.

District Health Director, Aaron Mwango, thanked the government and the Global Fund for the timely support, noting that CHWs play a key role in bringing health services closer to the people.

“Our CHWs are the foot soldiers in our fight against malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhea in our communities. The bicycles, bags, and raincoats will make their work easier and more efficient,” he stated.

Dr Mwango further highlighted that the CHWs’ efforts are essential in reducing mortality rates and improving community health outcomes, especially for vulnerable populations in hard to reach places.

And Derek Chipeta, one of the Community Health Workers, thanked the government and its partners for the support.

“We are truly grateful because some of the places we visit are very far from health posts, and we’ve been walking long distances. These bicycles will make a big difference as we’ll reach more households faster and offer care when it’s needed the most,” he explained.

At the same event, the District Commissioner also officially handed over a brand-new ambulance to the District Health Office.

The ambulance, procured under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), is among the 119 ambulances recently distributed by the government to strengthen emergency health services across the country.

Livingstone Mayor found with case to answer in a corruption case

1

Livingstone Mayor, Constance Muleabai, has been found with a case to answer in a corruption case currently before the Livingstone Magistrates’ Court.

This follows allegations that the Mayor solicited and later received large sums of money in exchange for the cancellation of property rates owed to the local authority.

According to court records, Mayor Muleabai is facing two counts of corrupt practices. In the first count, she is accused of soliciting K120, 000 from Monde Sumbwa, who is a state witness in the matter.

In the second count, she is alleged to have received K180, 000. The transactions are said to be linked to the cancellation of property rates valued at more than K300, 000 owed to the Livingstone City Council.

When called to respond, Mayor Muleabai denied both charges and dismissed the claims that she ever asked for or received any money from Sumbwa and maintained her innocence, insisting that the accusations were baseless.

After considering the testimonies presented so far, the court ruled that a prima facie case had been established, thereby, placing the Mayor on her defence.

This means she will now be required to present her side of the story, either by testifying on her own behalf, calling witnesses, or both.

The case has attracted public attention in Livingstone, given Muleabai’s position as Mayor and the implications of the allegations on the credibility of the City Council.

Analysts note that the proceedings could have a bearing on public confidence in the local authority, particularly in the handling of council finances and governance.

The matter is expected to continue in the coming weeks, with the defence opening its case before the Magistrates’ Court.

President Hichilema re-affirms the government’s commitment to mitigate wildlife habitat incidences

0

President Hichilema has re-affirmed the government’s commitment to implement measures to mitigate incidents in all the wildlife habitats, in order to protect lives and property in the country.

President Hichilema says the government is enhancing the protection of natural resources while enabling communities to benefit from sustainable tourism.

Speaking in a speech read on his behalf by Minister of Fisheries and Livestock Peter Kapala, during the Dantho Traditional Ceremony of the Chikunda people in Luangwa District, ZANIS reports that President Hichilema acknowledges the cases of human-animal conflict which have negatively impacted on the people in the district.

As one of the mitigation measures to the human-animal conflict in Luangwa District, he reported that the government has procured two land cruiser vehicles for the Department of National Parks and Wildlife to enable swift response to cases of human-animal conflict in and around Luangwa.

“I wish to indicate that the interventions put in place by the government are aimed at promoting the coexistence between humans and wildlife,” he explained.

President Hichilema was responding to concerns of crop fields being devastated and humans being killed in his chiefdom thereby threatening food security and human life.

The President further appreciated Chief Mphuka for the farming activities that are taking place in Luangwa saying the government has expanded its support to farmers under the Farmer Input Support Program (FISP) and the Sustainable Agricultural Financing Facility.

He says these interventions have provided a credit window that enables more farmers to procure irrigation equipment, farming inputs, farm power mechanization equipment and livestock.

“These are unprecedented steps towards empowering our farmers and advancing the commercialisation of agriculture in Zambia and I assure you that government is making every effort to ensure that more farmers benefit from these initiatives,” President Hichilema explained.

He emphasised that the government will continue collaborating with the traditional leadership and supporting traditional ceremonies that promote peace and national unity in Zambia.

Meanwhile, Chief Mphuka has thanked the government for the developmental and social protection programs in his chiefdom citing social cash transfer and cash for work that have positively impacted many households.

This year’s Dantho traditional ceremony was celebrated under the theme, “Cultural restoration for national unity, peace and economic development in Zambia after 60 years.”

Zambia boosts regional ties with SADC members

0

Zambia’s Ambassador to Brazil, Lieutenant General Dennis Alibuzwi (Rtd), has concluded a series of strategic diplomatic engagements with fellow Southern African Development Community (SADC) Ambassadors, aimed at strengthening regional solidarity and promoting economic cooperation.

The high level consultations, which began on September 8, 2025, underscored Zambia’s unwavering commitment to a unified African voice in Brazil and deepened collaboration among SADC member states represented in the country.

Zambia’s Ambassador to Brazil’s diplomatic tour began with a meeting with South Africa’s Ambassador to Brazil Vusi Mavimbela, who is also the Dean of the SADC Group of Ambassadors in Brazil.

Mr Mavimbela emphasised the importance of a coordinated SADC voice that can effectively advance the region’s collective agenda in Brasília.

He noted that SADC Ambassadors must remain proactive in articulating regional priorities.
