Investors urged to consider Zambians

Labour Deputy Minister Simon Kachimba has called on investors in the country to consider giving Zambians managerial positions in their organizations.

Mr. Kachimba says it is sad that most foreign investors come with their own expertise while there are Zambians who are qualified to take up some of the top positions in their companies.

Mr. Kachimba said this in Lusaka when he visited Spar Arcades and First Alliance Bank Cairo Road branch to assess conditions of service of local employees among others issues.

And speaking earlier First Alliance bank Executive Director Suresh Gupta said his organization has not engaged any expatriates in the last 10 years.

Meanwhile Spar Zambia Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mike Yeatman disclosed that his company has promoted many Zambians in various supervisory positions.

  1. non-story please, your stories are “a bit too short” LT!

  2. Rubbish!!!! You are in business to make money and so have to deploy and employ resources that are profitable and efficient. Only Zambians seem to feel sorry for themselves. Arsenal fc have just drawn Barcelona with all non-English players barring Walcott!!! So plz give us something else to read. Peace!

  3. Iwe Kachimba, do you have to plead for investors to place locals in managerial positions??? A sensible govt should bargain cautiously with the investors before they are allowed to commence operations. You have a handful of Labour Commissioners who are expected to ensure that locals are not denied opportunities to work in good positions. You should not allow your Commissioners to be weak by being dictated upon by the investors.

We need people like you in Govt…you have said it so well……………

  5. what do you expect when an investment fee in zambia is 250,000dollars, like this they shall continue bringing their own expatriates and our fellow qualified zambians will still remain jobless,

  6. The government must not interfere with the way these businesses run their affairs. Government itself has shown little confidence in Zambian managers by privatizing some business and not giving these people the opportunity to run these companies independently without interference from government. There are many examples were even profitable companies were handed over to ‘investors’ to run. It is the responsibility of government to support business like Zamtel which employs Zambian managers and not sell them away and still expect them to employ Zambians in management positions.

  7. JEFF MWANZA and NO 7 have valid points Until legislation is enacted or existing legislation applied correctly to deal with such issues, we will always be BEGGING. Labour laws need to be flexible but protective of employer and employee. But as in most cases, the one with the biggest wallet wins. Also, Let Zambians create their own companies and not beg foreigners for work. We seem to think ORGANISED business is this magical thing in our country so we leave it to foreigners to our detriment. Socialism killed us we need to teach kids the value of commerce from an early age else this scenario will perpetuate itself. The Citizen’s empowerment initiative is a step in the right direction. Charity begins at home

  8. Yes zambians are qualified enough to be manegers in those companies there must a law over this issue

  9. I am not for idea in putting Zambians in top position, reasons being that, mostly they are corrupt, lazy, they to be supervised constantly. We have seen it and it is still happening. SORRY!
