LT Update: We join Microsoft in begging people to stop using Internet Explorer 6 (IE6)

Share

We have in the past asked people to stop using Internet Explorer 6 because this browser is almost 10 years old and a lot has happened on the internet and there are so many bad issues affecting it that are well documented on the internet.Using Internet Explorer leaves you very vulnerable as a net user in terms of security. We pray you don’t use it for Internet payments or banking!!

Understandably, most people in Zambia are using IE6 because they are still using a copy of Windows XP and it works great on their old hardware and IE6 is bundled with Windows XP, a decision Microsoft now realises has created a monster hard to get rid off.

Last week, Microsoft announced that it is ready to move beyond Internet Explorer 6. The software giant has launched a new website, The Internet Explorer 6 Countdown, that bears the slogan: “Moving the world off Internet Explorer 6.”

On its new website, IE6Countdown.com, Microsoft is making its most concentrated effort yet to get users to move away from the decade-old browser. As the site says in its preamble, “10 years ago a browser was born. …It’s time to say goodbye.” The goal of the website is to get Internet Explorer 6 usage to drop to less than 1% worldwide.

As Lusakatimes.com, we want to join Micrposoft in this effort. 20 % of people visiting Lusakatimes.com are still using Internet Explorer 6. This is really a huge number for us to just ignore. In fact, our site upgrades and redesign tend to take longer than required because we have to meet the needs of this 20% group.

If you are still using IE6, we want to beg you to get off it please. All the best modern and secure browsers are now free. You have a whole variety to choose from: Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 7-9, Mozzila, Safari, Opera and many more. All these are free as in Free Beer. NI VA MAHALA!!!. Upgrade Today.

  1. I think we always need to consider just how long you may use a particular technology. Software, unlike the methodologies and tools used to create it, has a best by date. It is amazing some people are still using windows XP ten years down the line. Windows 7 is the current OS for desktops and it is light-weight compared to XP. It is intuitive, secure and downright classy. Let us implement some modules that will “automatically” upgrade the IE whe users visit LT. need some help???

  2. Yaba, Bobyy you cracking my ribs. Exactly what I had in mind. I started a long time ago using Mozilla firefox except the only difference with you and me is am MMD :)

  3. #3 Deliverables,

You say #1 has cracked your ribs, you’ve made my day and you have just cracked mine. I also use Mozilla as my browser except the only difference between you and me is I’m independent of any party. Have a good day!

  4. I think, its not that Microscroft wants people to stop using IE6 but they are trying to market later versions of xplorer.Microsoft is aware that, they no longer have a huge command of the market and open-source software(GNOME) has become common and dominant.people are using Mozilla Firefox because it is an open-source product, meaning a programmer will have access to the source code and its free of charge.Firefox,Google chrome, opera,Netscape and safari are better than IExplorer by microsoft.Infact open-source softwares are very potable.they work on different platforms.on windows OS,apple,Linux and UNIX.

  5. #6 Distant Drums – I dont need to be long to MMD or UPND to be in line with time. All you think of especially UPND is to produce a Tonga president so much that you start confusing issues. You are just like one person I know who always wants to talk about his education at Imperial College

  6. Its sad that LT is begging Zambian users to stop using IE6 without investigating y pipo r still using IE6. However, most pipo have XP installed on there computer, much as IE6 is free for download one needs to take into the account of how many people r connected 2 INTERNET in order for them to download the software. Internet connection is very expensive in zambia. Post.Net at Manda Hill to download 32mb they changed me K 5000 last year. What more downloading IE 8,9.

  7. The world has moved on. Move with it. I use Mozilla and IE9 downloaded for free. And i don’t like PF, MMD and UPND, they are all a bunch of opportunists, ba mambala.

  8. #7 its nothing to do with marketing of other versions of IE, trully IE6 has alot of security holes and i would not recommend that anyone should continue using it, especially for those who do busness online busness.
#10 dont you think that if someone is using IE6 to connect it basically means he/she has access to internet, IE8 is only about 16MB and i fill anyone can manage to download it.
The sad thing about this issue is that most people running internet cafes are still using IE6

  9. #1 – Nice…. Proof that any topic at LT can be politicized – LOL!

Firefox is the only way to go! Chrome is OK but found FF has more features.
