Vice-president and minister of Justice George Kunda says government is in the process of setting up a campus for the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education -ZIALE

Mr Kunda said the move aims at absorbing the anticipated increase in the number of law graduates seeking professional training.

He explained that several private universities have set up law schools resulting in an increased number of law graduate schools in the country.

Mr Kunda said preliminary works on the establishment of the campus have started.

He was speaking at the official opening of the symposium for ZIALE in Lusaka.

The Vice-president also said that government will soon govern the accreditation of law schools.

And the chairperson at the board of the examiners at ZIALE, Justice Lombe Chibesakunda said the board is deeply concerned with the poor results at the institution.

Justice Chibesakunda explained that over the past five years the results have been very poor and below expectations.

She said in 2006, only 8 law students passed the exams out of 116 that enrolled.

And ZIALE director, Palan Mulonda said the institution will support government’s effort in advancing legal education in the country.

Earlier, chairperson of ZIALE council and Attorney General Abyudy Shonga said a collective intervention is key to dealing with the law pass rate at ZIALE.

The three-day symposium aims at reviewing the curriculum for law students to align it to modern trends.

  1. Bantalamisoka just want their relatives to progress and become lawyers. Muleya bonse when MMD goes. In simple statistics that is unacceptable performance.

  2. #1: I agree with you the Lawyers from UNZA fikopo sana. How can you have such a pass rate of less than 1%, too much dependacy on leakages at ZIALE.

  3. Lord, please forgive these unenlightened who have commented above. The profession of law, just like that of Doctors, Dentists, Vets, Accountants, Engineers, Economists, et al, is immensly noble. Its not for the useless to stand up and look down on it. An inquest into the happenings at Ziale is indubitably welcome. The lawyers at Unza, contrary to the misconceptions above, are virtuous; this is actual and factual. Life is not about looking down on others, its about being that person that enthuses success in another; its about being the mentor so many are in search of; its about adhering to God’s command to do all things {work} as if we are doing it unto God. Instead of condemnation, endeavour to be a value adding condiut; be that person the world has been waiting for. God bless now &…

  4. this is a very good development, i am currently studying law at The University of Chibolya – Intercity Bus Terminus Campus.

  5. govt should get serious and inspect some of these so called universities, including our 2 main ones. standards are non existant and they just want to churn out substandard graduates

  6. i think gov should have instead let the private sector run such and institution. they will be the major beneficiary of the out put of this institution. gov needs to concerntrate on monitoring and enforcing standards

  7. Lawyers add virtually nothing to productivity and yet wreck millions in fees for no work done. Since Mushota, that K210 million dead thief, we have been made the most litigative people in the world, talk talk talk day and night while the country degenerates further into abject poverty. No more campuses should be set up for this stinking lot, what we need are gas chambers to annihilate them from society because they are a very retrogressive lot whose acts and omissions have been most injurious to the fabric of our society.

  8. GRZ, spend more money in building more medical schools to train doctors, the ratio of doctors to patients is unbearably high.Ridgeway Campus cannot accommodate all the potential students into med school.I don’t think the there is a shortage of lawyers in this country.

  9. There is a clique by some prominent lawyers that make it deliberately difficult for Grads to make it at ZIALE so that the law fraternity is reserved for a chosen few. We know all this

  10. Its not about whose Chikopo or not. legal Student’s, Lawyers are simply failing to construe, inter-prate and apply the law. How can the entire legal faculty allow the Constitutional bill to pass parliament without even commenting on the provisions which where maintained the powers of the president, Separation of powers, 50 plus one etc Bakalamba law is all about good laws which will stand test of time.Honestly Zambia is this the CAP 1 which will stand a test of time? And does it reflect the views and aspiration of the Zambian people. Lets be Reasonable and Progressive and not theoretical full of Jargon for nothing!!!

  11. Someone please……. Tell me why our VP is also the minister of Justice. Do I have to go back home so I can strip him one of those titles? How selfish is that? Wechalo!

  12. it unbecoming 4 Some UNZA law students to argue dat they are the best law students in zambia.1 reason they fail at ZIALE is poor legal background attributed to the poor legal materials at their library.join private university’s libraries and accsess the rich legal materials their libraries have coz u wil neva stop failing at ZIALE.y do u argue dat it is impossibo to get a merit at law?mr.katolo from katolo & associates graduted with a merit from UNZA (open university law lecturer).UNZA is just a name but da mode of delivery at UNZA leaves a lot to be desired.

  13. God almighty help me so that i can make it. without fear or favor because Lord you know i try my best and beyond the sky lies my limit. Amen

  14. Great post. I used to be checking continuously this blog and I’m inspired! Very useful info specifically the ultimate phase :) I deal with such info much. I was seeking this particular information for a long time. Thank you and good luck.

  15. Law is n0t only about w0rking hard… When y0u read y0ur books you also have to kn0w how to bring out y0ur answers in each course. I.e, c0mpany law & ethics/conduct may have different m0des of how you can deliver your answers!! Yes there could be some personal huddles at ZIALE & law sch00ls generelly, but it would help y0u if you work hard & do so in the right way as each particular course might require!! (personal experience) g00dluck both current & prospective students!! Mudenda J.T
