Renard Drafts Unknown Katebe Into Zambia Team

Little known Zimbabwean-based defender Aaron Katebe has been drafted into the Zambia team to face Angola in a friendly on May 16.

The ex-Afrisports player who plays for Zimbabwean club Hwange joined the team in training on Monday.

Herve Renard said after training at Olympic Youth Development Centre in Lusaka that he will start Katebe against Angola.

“If he does well against Angola he will come with us to Johannesburg and will have to compete against Stophilla Sunzu, Hichani Himoonde, Chintu Kampamba and we will see,” Renard said.

Zambia will setup camp in Johannesburg on May 20 ahead of their 2014 Fifa World Cup Group D qualifying games against Sudan and Ghana away and at home on June 2 and 9.

Meanwhile, Katebe’s inclusion brings to three the number of foreign-based players in the team.

Midfielder Chisamba Lungu of Russian club FC Ural Sverdlovsk Oblast is already in camp while Felix Katongo awaits the team in Luanda where he plays for Petro Atletico.

  1. This is the coach Zambia needs, bring more sensational players. Hwange is a strong team, therefore Katebe must be a good player. Moreover, Sunzu needs a more energetic partner.
    Bring more players HR

  2. Way to Go. The team must remember, we the African Champs and they should play like that. Do not fear Egypt, Nigeria, Cameroon Algeria. let them fear us. Our Players with the new status of African Champs should continue the soccer war and aim for the WorldCup now.

  3. This is why I like Renard, he is always on the lok out for “spare parts” for the team. This creates continuity in quality should one player fall out of the team for any reason. Please continue wuth the spirit, actually we need a second tier national team. This brings about the much desired competition for places and eliminates complacency.

  7. Why camping in SA? How much monies is going out of the country thru these campings? Develop Zambian stadiums and STOP dependant on SA as if Zambia is not independent. Ministers and their nearest kin treatments = in SA .. FAZ training grounds = in SA.. Where is our pride as African champions????

    • Camping abroad has nothing to do with facilities. Even developed countries like England camp outside England. Camping means getting away from the normal sorroundings you are so much used to and concentrate on the very reason you are camping and in this case, the forthcoming games.
