Police have surrounded Evelyn Hone College as students continue to protest at the learning institution.

The Students who have vowed not to go back to class are demanding an apology from the Minister of Education, John Phiri over a statement he made when he addressed them on Wednesday.

The students are also demanding for Vice President Guy Scott to address them since he is the area member of parliament for Lusaka Central Constituency.

A ZNBC News crew that visited the institution found the main gate sealed off with roofing sheets while students were found chanting slogans against management and government.

Union President Machila Banda says the students will continue with the class boycott until government addresses their needs.

But College Spokesperson Mwelwa Mandona says management is involving students and government in dialogue to resolve the impasse at the college.

  2. What is this story about?
When reporting news please include details and facts. It makes reading it so much more interesting for the readers.
Why are the students protesting? Because someone said something they didn’t like? Well what did he say and why do they take offense? There is allusion in the comments to lack of resources and proper accommodations for students? Is this so? A reporter might easily have checked. What do the authorities and the government have to say?
If you don’t have a whole story please don’t clutter the website with meaningless half-baked crud. Get the whole story. That’s what journalists do.

  3. Time wasters..feel pity for these students…just go back to your books and stop making noise and disturbing the peace on the streets..

  4. The govt you voted for is at work, therefore students go back to class. Once you are in employment it will be more cash in your pockets, within 90days of being in employment.

  5. The change you voted for has come. Enjoy it to the fullest. Haven’t the college’s problems been resolved yet? I thought all the problems were going to be resolved within 90 according to the area MP.

  6. Guy promised during campaigning to sort out the student’s problems in 90 days so they have a right to be pissed. Let him be held accountable and answer for this.

  7. Youths should learn to use their brains not acclamation when voting. Go back to class it is your Govt.

  8. Those of you condeming the current gvt should be serious. Or are you just blogging for the sake of it? This was situation was the same during MMD you muppets! Like I said in another post the situation at Evelyn Hone cant be sorted out in days or 10 months. It needs alot of stakeholder involvement to sort it out once and for all! You probably think PF will sort out EHC female students parading the streets of Rhodespark at night in 90 days.

  9. Njekwa the hookers you like picking in the Rhodes park streets are in fact not EHC students . They are sex workers from Garden compound.

  10. @13, Njekwa – The whole purpose of voting out MMD was to seek some improvement in the manner the affairs of this crippled nation is governed. So making reference to MMD is illogical. When MMD took power in 1991 we saw changes withion 6 months, for example the public transport sector was greatly improved, essential commodidities flooded the markets and the long ques for soap were a thing of the past. That is what we expect from this Govt not creating more Districts when the current ones are still underdeveloped.

  11. @M. Ngenda. A year after MMD took over I started lecturing at EHC. I can tell you now in the 10 years I worked there the gvt under MMD did almost nothing! All the infrastructure that was put in by the Irish and other donors just deteriorated to the woeful state it is in today. The only thing MMD did was sell institutional houses which EHC staff occupied to sitting tenants, retire staff early and put in a Management board that clearly has failed. Did they at any time address the plight of students. NO! That is why i am referring to them, who else should i refer to?

  12. the College has deteriorated steadily over the last 35 yrs. At Independence and for a few years thereafter it was showpiece with clean pleasant accommodation , well stocked facilities and A 1 dedicated lecturers.
It seems to be the norm that public institutes receive little maintenance and inadequate monthly funds for keeping them clean. Also, students can carry a percentage of the blame for the careless way in which they use the building, it’s furnishings and fittings. We need to develop Civic Pride.
