Don’t turn Zambia into police state, PF told

Share

Lawyer Sakwiba Sikota

Prominent Lusaka lawyer and opposition United Liberal Party leader Sakwiba Sikota has urged the ruling Patriotic Front to respect the existence of opposition political parties in the country.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Qfm News, Mr. Sikota says recent attempts by government to instill fear in the opposition will be an exercise in futility.

Mr. Sikota says Zambians must not allow any individual to turn the country into a Police state adding that modern politics calls for collaboration between competitors.

He states that if Zambia is to thrive democratically, political stakeholders must be committed to ensuring that they respect one another and engage in constructive debates on issues of national importance.

Mr. Sikota has therefore urged government to be accommodative of ideas from the opposition adding that doing so is the only way the country is going to attain meaningful development.

He points out that the interests of the majority Zambians who are desperately in need of development should be above the political divide.

  1. mr sikota you are 100% correct but the problem is with these bemba’s in govt they think govt is their’s forever to the extent that even chief puta can act as the president, giving advice to these guys from muchinga foresty is like telling a stone to give you water.

    • Your comment is very myopic. Sakwiba must first start advising his clients Nevers and HH to engage in constructive politics.

  2. PF – was a share waste of VOTES. I guess so many of us have regretted for having voted these self centred fools.

When people say vote wise, they mean what they say.

  3. Holding loud-mouthed empty cans accountable for their behaviour is not turning the country into a police state. If it were, you, Sakwiba would be afraid to even say what you are saying. Listen to radio callers on any political programme, they freely criticise government. Have you ever seen them visited by the police? My friend, just do your job and defend HH’s rants in court and make your money. Finito!

    • Puuuta mwana wesu. These scumbags have gone too far. Where is the rule of law if we allow politicians to puke whatever gabbage they feel all in the name of freedom. This multi-billionaire lawyer can say whatever he wants, after all his pockets are being nicely lined financially by the many crooks he has been defending. I doubt whether zambia has even a code of ethics for these lawyers. Shut up we chitotoli iwe saki and concentrate on making money off these scumbags trying to change the laws of zambia to suit them. Yipikayee!

    • Bob Sichinga opened his mouth accusing China of printing fake Kwacha notes for the MMD… I not heard of a police call out for him… Let’s be sincere when we criticise.

  4. Just continue championing the amalgam of unelectable political parties comprising UPND, ADD, MMD and your own ULP. You don’t possess even a scintilla of shame to defend a party that hounded you on tribal grounds.

    • This is an insult to the Zambian people. Only you saw a baboon in Sata and the rest of the country didn’t? Do you think you’re more clever than anyone else in Zambia? Make constructive comments to help heal the country.

  5. Very well spoken, Sakwiba Sikota. Zambia has been a pace setter in models of governance in the Region. We did this by pulling together. Like in football. So, we need to move on and graduate from this low disgraceful  level of Politics to a higher dignified level. We have to learn to turn to each other, and not against each other, if we are to harness job creation and growth. Its not Rocket science.

    • Dear Kolwe, This should start with BOTH the ruling party AND the Opposition parties. Waiting for the others to start behaving in a dignified manner first before you start yourself will not take us anywhere. The Golden rule in the game should be…’Do unto others as you would like them to do unto you, because what goes around comes around’.

    • Mutualism is the the phanacea for peace and development. Parasitic behaviour either way, will only push the country into dangerous territories. HH and the opposition should tame their tongues and offer constructive criticism to the government which has been very tolerant and patient with them. They should not mistake the freedom of expression as a means of insulting without giving alternatives to MCS and the PF. Nobody should even think about a police state because if that was ever to manifest itself, not even the immoral Saki will have a voice. Lets not tempt fate.

  6. the govt must hunt crooks, thieves, looters, shady leaders, corrupt profiteers, hateful liars
the cleansweep will be hard, but this is the beginning of the end of laxism and corrupt zambian State…
    VIVA ZED !

  7. @5 Maurice Makulu.

The Loudest mouth, empty can that I know is some at plot fimofimo who can even keep quite in a serious fora like the SADC, shouting foolish and unwelcome jokes, gives empty promises to his citizens, and lies thru his teeth without even blinking.

The Second Loudest EMPTY CAN is YOU who speaks without analysing or reasoning. Finito.

  8. @5 Maurice Makulu.

The Loudest mouth, empty can that I know is someone at plot fimofimo who CANT keep his mouth SHUT even in a serious fora like the SADC, shouting foolish and unwelcome jokes, gives empty promises to his citizens, and lies thru his teeth without even blinking.

The Second Loudest EMPTY CAN is YOU who speaks without analysing or reasoning. Finito.

  9. Iwe Sir-Kwiba,
Why don’t you tame your friend’s tongues first. Ever heard of the word accountability? Its a pity that as a lawyer all you think about is defend even when things are obvious.

  10. Mr Wina clearly does not understand the meaning of a Police State. Just continue representing Political scum and make your money without a conscious of the ramifications of your clients actions towards the Zambian people. What constructive contribution debate on development has ULP ever made?

  11. Mr Nashala neka party does not make sense anymore. keep defending trash and make your money! You are a nonentity in zed politics.

  12. Ba LT, when some of us state the facts, you are very fast to erase the comments, but look at #5 i think its okay for you ka?

  13. Iwe Sakwiba, you’re represenative lawyer for Never and HH. You must also advise the opposition to engage in meaniful dialogues. Not this stance of opposing anything the govt of the day want to do for the benefit of its people, in the name of providing checks and balances. These wrongs you’re talking about are not only with the govt but the opposition is well.

  14. The accommodation process is not an exceptional function of govt alone but the opposition must show respect and maturity in their criticisms if they have to be taken serious.
More often than not, the so called criticism is mere petty political rhetoric lacking in substance.
This stems from the mischaracterization by the opposition that you have to oppose anything and everything that govt says or does as agreeing with any govt position while in opposition will be seen as a weakeness. Hence there is even competition for trivial-mindedness among opposition parties as to who shouts out loudest and very often will be seen as the strongest opposition party.
Sikota must implore his friends in the opposition to be objective

  15. What is Sikota talking about? What intimidation? The opposition are sometimes attracting the attention of the Police. Where does the government come in on that?

  16. Sakwiba must even be grateful to PF because he is making more money. He is happy that there is antagonism between HH and PF leadership for him to make money in his pockets.

  17. The problems is that it is not easy for majority of people to accept when they have made a wrong decision such as voting for a party without a solid plan in place. For instance more cash in pockets; how are is it possible to do this, when can this be done, what will be the measure? We can only pray that with time that this party in the process develops a plan… otherwise kulalolesha fye.

  18. What do you expect from someone who was campaigning against PF? Sour grapes!!
Sikota is a mercenary in Zambian politics. He was paid to go around campaigning for MMD and now he is been paid to defend them in corruption cases. He formed a party with no membership for this purpose, to divide and raise confusion in Zambian politics. The more they sue each other, he wins while pretending to offer advice. He should talk about his party and what he can do for this country instead of point the finger at PF and blaming them for the failures of MMD. He was around when the MMD introduced the public order act instead of pretending as if the PF enacted the law.

  19. #5 YOU ARE 100% CORRECT. THESE PEOPLE JUST OPEN THEIR MOUTHS AND WHEN THEY TALK YOU WONDER WHETHER ONE USED HIS BEHIND TO TALK. THE WHOLE LOT OF SAKWIBA SURELY DOESN’T KNOW THE PRACTICAL DEFINITION OF ‘POLICE STATE’? SAD. WE THOUGHT THEY ARE LEARNED. SAKWIBA DON’T ALARM THE MASSES. JUST MAKE YOUR MONEY ON SUPPORTING THIEVES.

    • You are a very bad lawyer if anything you have robbed Zambians Jobs by supporting criminals and thieves SAKI

  20. From the outset I will state my position in this short thesis, and the thesis is about simple facts. Zambians of all walks of life, Zambian institutions are part of the capitalists super structures e.g. the govt.,unions, churches, the police dept. the courts, etc. What this means is that capitalist empire pays the above entities for them to sustain their daily activities. Hence, the majority of the masses fail to understand why the government has deviated from pre-election pledges to the current painful infamous situation. Capitalist empires manage their affairs on the basis of profits and the interests of the masses are irrelevant to them. They view the Zambian masses as a source of labour, approach differently, masses are there only to sell their labour and provide market for goods

  21. I am not a communist, apply theory in practice and critically look at the capitalists tendencies around the globe and judge for yourselves. Having had travelled a lot in almost 5 continents with a sound higher educational background, I can safely say that engage any govt.at lengthy and you will soon find out that it is not the amount of power any head of state has which determines development and national unity. With this approach, then it to understand why traditional capitalist states are experiencing economic downturns. The only regions experiencing economic growths are sub Saharan Africa, the emerging markets (China, Brazil, South Africa,Russia,India) Question everything around yourselves in lieu of fighting each other and deaming yourselves. I am not anti-investment from foreigners.

  22. Dear Zambian friends, approach these social issues from three perspectives namely historical point of view, social point of view and legal point of view. As long as one is operating within the three given perspectives, then you can discover solutions to the social ills and other constant confrontations. The reason why I’m insisting on the social perspective is because everything is socially constructed. The above perspectives can be used to stop both the unintended and intended consquences, simply known as developmental effectes of mostly irresponsible biased decisions. Do not allow yourselves to be used as simple proletariates (labourers who sell their labour to capitalists). Question everything, Zambians are known as peaceful people who have lived for generations without war.

  23. Mushota I wrote to you yesterday asking for your hand in marriage. I like your comments and you are my idol. Never mind about Dirty Zambia. I am also in the Daispora with no intention of going back to a place full of flies

    • Dead party no chance it has no followers led by a novice who has not held any position at section, branch not even an MP

    • @Our Country first – that is a seriou misconception which Sata made you to believe. What experience has Sata used that is benefiting Zambia. With this kind of mentality we continue to have recycled politicians who have long past their use by date

  24. Capitaists most effective ways of extracting resourses from the so called primitive people of Africa i.e. Zambia, is to systematically rule divide them through the so called democratic structures by cleverlly playing tribal cards. The best chosen myth of these remote rulers is to instill a false belief in certain tribes that there are superior more than other tribes therefore whatever they say is unquestionable. What follows from such an inferiority complex is that the supposedly supperior tribe will selfishly claim entitlement to valuable country’s resources and leave fallen unwanted fragements to those tribes in the peripheral sectors( the so-called inferior tribes or tribes susceptible to name calling) This sumised analysis precisely reflects the Bemba position towards others,

  25. My approach is drawn from researched work and this is not to hint that my superego does not have control over the ego which directs the impulses of the id. All the components of my personality are highly functional not dysfunctional. I do not just transfer thoughts from my head on to a piece of paper or a computor, but critical evaluation is carefully applied so as not to blindly believe anything/information. The Zambian saga deserves greater attention from every abled human being.

    • Then why pick on bembas if your medula as you claim functions 102%. This misconception about bembas will force them to react. Anyone who speaks bemba is not a bemba, luapula has no bembas, northern province and now muchinga has many tribes other than bembas just as they are toka leyas in southern province. We have been insulted enough. Ululumbi lwa mulanda kukakata. Please, don’t make us become tribal for we know who’s actually a bemba from a bisa, ushi, namwanga, let alone the greeks from southern and western provinces. No bemba has ever ruled Zambia.

  26. Mr Sakwiba needs to be reminded that Zambia has been a police state for decades, in fact from Kaunda days and all the successive governments inherited the evil practice and carried it on to this day. The only difference is that it is worse now under this PF president.

    • You would not even have the freedom to vomit what you just said if it was a police state. Be thankful we are not just democratic but a good people in the majority with the few bad eggs the likes of you.

  27. Put well thought about inventory of qestionnaires to those claiming that they have the knowledge to stir the economy of the country in the right direction. Political power is not enough for any sane human to address the bluising issues of trying to reduce the high rate of unemployment, housing crisis, healthy crisis, education crisis etc. Implementing short term goals with negative unintended consquences which are capable of reversing the gains which Zambia managed to archieve under the internationally respected late Mr. Mwanawasa, will not solve the country’s massive problems. The govt. is imposing a policy(FIXED WAGE policy) which failed in other states e.g. The Zambian govt. should consult these pertinent issues before copying failed policies which increase poverty and violence.

  28. I am not a politician but an academic who refuses to be subjected to conditional existence. Further, I donate that I refuse to be part and parcel of any organisation whose objectives are to provide cosmopolitan developments and further manipulating humans beacause I do not want to be a reciepiant of intended and unintended consquences. A human factor is very difficulty to manage and control because every human can reflect, internalise and react to anything around him/her. When a so called smart leader is comfortable and has impression that everything is under control, a human being is already multiplying counter productve measures so as to out smart the rivals. It is a combination of Psychology and advanced Mathematics. Build Zambia in a clever critical manner without excluding other Zamb

  29. You notice the mere mention of the ADD, MMD,UPND alliance is causing panick among pf chaps (the tantrums). That what happens when people possesed with evil and destructive spirit are faced with the righteous and constructive minds. They know they can t hold any longer than next election

    • PF is still popular remember its the power of numbers that count.HH has no followers. You guys who think that HH will be next president lack foresight.Politics ia about numbers.Gen.Miyanda is betther that HH

    • Combined as you have put them, even if there was a presidential and parliamentary election today, they will still lose because now the zambian voters know who they voted for against the PF. Being in opposition does not mean you oppose everything the government in power is doing. ADD Milupi, is only in western province with almost nothing in terms of numbers. HH since his numbers are dwindling, has probably less than 15% electoral votes. MMD whilst doing a bit better under RB, has now become a shadow of itself and with Mumba in bed with corrupt members and with his Canada scam still pending leaves him at about 20%. Do your maths about the rest.

  30. Sikota we all know that if Zambia was turned into one, you would benefit more from your clients the most. This chap is in no capacity to offer advise.

  31. I thot adding to the sense that Sakwiba is talking about..pipo look at what Sakeni said wen responding to concerns by CCZ.First compare the police now and before, some of our relatives are dragged to court for exercising their right to freedom of speech. All are drawn to believe the Pathetic Fools are doing every to address the concerns pipo are going thru. How many of each ministers relative r in Manchester of London(are Ambassadors or high commissioners)Cadrelism has taken a center stage in Zambia,it’s in black and white period

  32. “When two cows are busy fighting, the LAWYER is busy milking.” I like this, Chief Kaponya. Anyway, well said, Saki.

  33. I do not agree with you on this if anything Sata has proved to be agood leader. He does not respond to evil attacks. You are busy making billions of money by representing thieves shame on you Saki. You have no morals even to talk about the Police.I respect our current crop of Police officers well donen PF Govt.My advice to you is leave politics you are addind no value Sata is the right man at the moment. How come its just you and HH the rest are talking sense

  34. How come its just you and HH the rest are talking sense.

  35. My advice to Saki, you are better off making money off the criminals you represent even when you know it’s wrong. The Sicilian mafia, the Japanese yakuza, the Mexican mafia have not come from without. They got tired of immoral and corrupt people like you. Don’t push the envelope just because you think you are beyond touch. Freedom if wrongly used is a consumable commodity. Don’t misunderstand and misread the zambians tolerance for stupidity saki. They know what they have endured the last 20 years under the MMD.

  36. There is no doubt that we now have the most brutal and intollerant state that we have ever had. Saki is spot on with his comments. Those who are throwing hate speach towards Saki are the militia of the police state.

  37. As a Zambian who has relatives, acquaintances, ex-workmates and ex-school mates  in both the ruling party and as well most of the opposition parties in our Country, I find it refreshing and quite frankly very mature when someone reminds us that we are among equals. Saki is said just that, and it is a good ideology. The rule of law is the way to go.

  38. Saki has hit the nail on the head and we need to ensure that government acts responsibly and does not create a police state. Tolerance is very important and those people speaking with hate have to realise that they are aiding the setting up of a repressive regime.
