Government has signed a US$40million investment agreement with Medi-Care International for the construction of a new medical centre in Lusaka.

Construction works of the project are still underway and work is expected to be completed in four months time.

Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister, Felix Mutati signed on behalf of the government while Medi-Care International Managing Director (MD) Andronikos Antonopoulos signed on behalf of Medi-Care International.

Mr. Mutati said the new Medi-Care medical centre was good investment in the country which should be supported by all as it would be very beneficial to all Zambians and Africa at large.

The Minister said once the New Medi-Care medical centre starts operating, there would be no need to continue flying patients abroad for medication and treatment of different diseases.

He said once fully operational, the new Medi-Care medical centre would have all the necessary equipment and machinery to treat patients.

Mr. Mutati also said the new Medi-Care medical centre would give an opportunity to medical personnel to be trained hence becoming more skilled.

The Minister who assured Medi-Care of government’s continued support until the construction works on the project were completed expressed happiness that such a medical centre would be the first one of its kind in Africa.

Meanwhile, Medi-Care International Managing Director Andronikos Antonopoulos thanked government for the support it has continued to render towards the construction of the new medical centre.

And Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) Board Chairman Luke Mbewe said ZDA was happy with such an investment in the health sector.

Mr. Mbewe urged other investors to consider investing in the health sector adding that once the new Medi-Care medical centre starts to operate it would benefit many Zambians.

The ZDA Board Chairman said funds towards the construction of the new Medi-Care were being utilized very well.

  2. PRESS CLIPPING:

RB: This is a joyous ocassion indeed. I can assure you of my govt’s support towards this project.

Reporter: How is this new hospital expected to benefit ordinary Zambians, your Execellency?
RB: I dont know. the owners are here. Why not ask them? The people of Zambia elected me as President last year, and am extremely grateful. Grateful indeed.

  3. “Mr. Mutati said the new Medi-Care medical centre was good investment in the country which should be supported by all as it would be very beneficial to all Zambians and Africa at large.”
While this is great news, I will await the actual time in which the Centre will be operational. I hope the Centre will truely be beneficial to all Africans as indicated in the quote above.
I thus hope that GRZ must start sensitising the Zambian Doctors stationed in different countries abroad on this information properly so that they can consider coming back home to work at the Centre.
There is also need to fix the Helath Insurance system so that access to the coming infrastructure will be possible for…

    • You are right Maestro. In order to allow most Zambians to access the services that shall be offered by this facility, Government should facilitate the process of setting up a fully fledged medical insurance. Without medical insurance, the benefits of quality medical care shall continue to elude most Zambians and shall remain a preserve of APAMWAMBAS.

  4. Good afternoon bloggers. I am back after a long absence. I hope that I have not been replaced. Only two pople were consistently in touch. Cheers Zoe and G Baby. Where are you?

  5. This is great news for our country this is what we look for in development i can see Zambia in the next 15 years far much developed than it was of course. This is a sign that we are moving forward we need more investment such as these.Good work gentlemen.

  6. Good for the politicians and other rich people. But will the benefits trickle down to the ordinary citizen of this country/Africa? How does it address the brain drain in our health system if there are no deliberate plans to employ our huge cadre of highly skilled and qualified doctors at home and abraod? Won’t it be another investment where an influx of poorly qualified Greek doctors will be exported to Zambia? I hope Mr. Minister, though you have been doing a good job, must have considered this as well.

  7. If those politicians were serious Zambia would’ve been poor like this.Politicians should show example by treating themselves in zed.why do they like going to south Africa 4 treatment?Better they die in zed rather than going 2 south Africa.we’ve to be patriotic in order to develop. So long as politicians seeking medical treatment abroad there’s nothing going 2 happen in zed.It takes sacrifice to move forward .Chiluba should have done better on making Zambia self reliable especially when it comes to hospitals.UTH by now should’ve been one of the best hospitals in Africa.Zambians are good doctors.

    • Apa pena wasosa russia-moscow. Unfortunately, it was not Mr Chiluba alone, but his entire Administration that includes certain characters who want to behave as if they are better people today when they probably gave him Chiluba wrong advice at the time he was ruling Zambia.
On politicians being treated in Zambia, the zambianwatchdog released a nice statement some time ago about a study in South African hospital that are visted by politicans from Southern African countries. The statement read that most of such politicians who go to South Africa for treatment are suffering from HIV. I only hope our Zambia politicians are not among those who make up that HIV/AIDS statistics and dont run away.

    • … and dont run away from UTH for fear of their HIV/AIDS statis being being known. Sad enough the South Africqan study has released this data and now our politicians may be among those who are known to be serioulsy affected by the HIV.
If there are any of our politicians who a running away from the UTH because of HIV/AIDS it is now sad that the information is known internationally. So the best way is to stop going to South Africa and have confidence in our fellow Zambian Medical Staff.

Whatever the case, the Mr Chiluba Administration may have errored to neglect key areas of of livelihood, but what do we do now to change the situation so that is is better? Voting wisely is the answer.

    • meastro read the article again, it was a study done in a number of countries by a south african reseacher who found out that alot of politicians in africa die before they are about 50yr and die from HIV /AIDS related illnesses. zambia and south africa were among the alarming countries.he did not say the zambian politicians who go to south africa for treatment are HIV /AIDS +..he may have even visited zambia to see whats on the ground. please read it again. mkazi kamba bwino muzamangiwa ka. as this can affect the clinics our politicians go to as the patients have the right to privacyin terms of their HIV status.not that im in favour of them going to RSA.

  8. Construction works of the project are still underway and work is expected to be completed in four months time.

Is it possible to to finish in four months time?Or it is just bla bla bla.Help me here please.

  9. MediCare International is a specialist international health insurance provider

It has been offering world-wide health insurance for over 20 years

Is the international health care division of SBJ Global Risks Limited which is ultimately controlled by insurance group AXA

Policies are underwritten by Brit Insurance

ohh yes .Looks like a profit making company.Zed people will benefit.

  10. Are they responding to Dr. Njovu’s article on long term investments in the medical field? If they are then this could be sustainable but if they are merely politcking then it will be a white elephant and go down as UTH. They need a sustainable scheme that would allow people to access medical facilities.

  11. This is the best news for the day. Maybe the expensive trips to Morningside and Gardern City clinics for the apamwambas will cease.

  12. AWE abena mutati ifyo fyabupuba, that medical institution wont be accessed by the common man.we want you to talk about that hospital which late levy initiated near chainama hills hospital.poseniko amano that one is meant for us.

  13. This article fills me with a lot of joy and hope. The importance of investing in medical care for Zambia and Africa in general can not be over-emphasized. it is also very encouraging to hear that our own medical personnel will be trained at the medical center. Such news brings determination and confidence in the hearts of our upcoming young citizens and brightens their future. This is the way forward for our nation.

  14. I think this is one of the best developments to have come out of the Banda adminstration, ever since he took over,we have been subjected to bu…hit talk & cheap political & dull fights.

  15. I have always wondered why it has been sooo difficult for GRZ to think like this. We should have these special hospitals in each city.

  16. I believe this will be a private medical centre, I don’t see how ordinary people will benefit from this project. If the Banda administration had invested USD$40m in UTH then I would be praising banda otherwise, this is nothing new, just people coming to milk ZAMBIA dry!!

  17. wow..a “super clinic” for the rich…what of Kabwe General.UTH,Chipata General,Kasama General.Mansa General,Kitwe & Ndola Central???i’m sure there is a “great investment plan” for the fantastic but poorly funded and maintained infrastructure the great thinkers of the UNIP era built.i wouldn’t want to believe that for one minute our “caring” govt has forgotten the hospitals the majority go to !! i’m sure the powers that be haven’t forgotten that the best Zambian doctors trained in these neglected institutions.

    • such innovations aught to be supported, at the same time improving on the existing hospitals should be an on going process. I having specialized clinics is very health for the nation both in the area of research and curative ..

  18. Good news yes.But how good?To to general population or to the “some of us”?.
Vipatala nivodula, mankhwala kulibe, ngati yapezekako niyodula.Well let me leave this to good analysts. How about the employment policy for the medical stuff at the named health center?Any limits to protect the local staff?Any incentives to attract zedians in the diasbora?I mean the brian drain syndrome

  19. This is one good project but this is purely a private hospital. How many poor Zambians will afford to go to the same institution. Our government should also look at revamping our public health facilities. From my experiance such entities are in for profits so if you cant afford or you dont have medical aid forget any service from such a project. Yes we need good and modern hospital but what about the common Zambian?

  20. Funny how they find money to fund a project when foreigners are involved but not the loclas. Former ZCCM health care staff and doctors once bid to purchase Nkana hospital in Kitwe. No fat chance from the MMD govt. Give it to the Chinese!
