SACCORD welcomes increased number of parliamentary seats

The Southern African Centre for Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has welcomed the decision to increase the number of Parliamentary seats from 150 to about 240.

SACCORD Information Officer Michelo Mwango told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka that increasing the number of MPs would give more people the chance to get into leadership positions.

She said this would also help in developing the constituencies as they would be divided into two adding that some constituencies are too big to be managed by one MP.

Ms. Mwango said the move to increase the number of MPs should be embraced.

Recently, the National Constitutional Conference (NCC) delegates resolved that the number of MPs be increased from 150 to about 240.

  1. What worries me about these constituency demacations is that some provinces have more constituencies while others have very few. Will someone explain to me the criteria used in demacating the constituencies. I consider that provinces with more MPs have a bigger voice in parliament than those with few.

  2. You can increase the seats to a thousand if you wish but that wont solve anything other than create more bureaucracy, consume more resources and money you don’t have. As it’s now you have more non government organisations that are contributing nothing towards development of the nation and paying more lipservice.

  3. this is ma-rubbish, where the hell is the money gonna come from, already the existing 150 have failed to deliver( even after getting colosal sums of gratuities)

Tax-payers money should not be resticted to a few individuals, instead of increasing the # of seats, let the money be diverted to inflastructure development, Roads, More hospitals, schools and/or even provision of medicines……………….

  4. i oppose the increase of MP to 240,its a waste of public funds maybe 200 to those very large constitucies,as MP main job is to legislate,Wards should be strengthened as a support base for MP ‘s office.hope saccord understand that its a lot of money paying gratuities.
