Energy and Water development Deputy Minister Hastings Imasiku has appealed to residents in Mongu and Kalabo districts to remain calm as government and ZESCO are doing their best to restore power in the two Districts.

Mr. Imasiki said ZESCO is currently working on moving a bigger transformer from Sesheke to Mongu and another one from Lusaka to Sesheke.

He told ZAINS in an interview that ZESCO is working around the clock and that power will be restored by Tuesday next week.

And Mr. Imasiku has said a back up system would be connected to the water and sewerage company to supply water to the residents.

ZESCO Mongu main transformer was damaged by lighting on Wednesday this week leaving residents in Mongu and Kalabo districts in a power blackout.

The power blackout that began on Wednesday afternoon has affected Mongu, Kalabo, Senanga and Kaoma, also resulting in erratic water supply in the affected towns.

  1. What happened to the lightening arresters at the substation. Something really went wrong in the system. The whole province being plagued into total darkness. This is strange than fiction. I am certain the engineers will rectfy the problem.

  2. Goodmorning Zambia
This is bad indeed, especially for the butcheries and other businesses that rely on electricity. Well, perhaps RB can give some answers, seeing that he’s in Barotseland this weekend.

  3. FORMER Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) executive director Songowayo Zyambo has been appointed chairman of Zesco Limited’s board of directors, replacing Wamundila Muliokela—————–tribal appointment by the idoit tralist bwezani the hater of the people of western ,southern ,north western, central, cpperbelt rural l,usaka rural, the presidency of this luciferian devil worshiper must be stopped! we have more problems at zesco now than we had when wamundila muliokela was there. Please we beg dont vote for BWEZANI IF ONE YEAR LEFT BEFORE WE TAKE OUR COUNTRY IN TO A NEW DIRECTION

  4. Yangu,,,,,,, After RBish’s intention to go to western province that’s when they tell us that there is a serious blackout

  5. I wonder why we dont get chaps like veteran and the other fanatics commenting on these and many other negatives of the Rupiah adminstration. we need consistency, not just on pulling down the pacts vision. would also want to here on the crude oil single sourcing deals.By the time we get to 2011 there will be no where to run.

  6. I hope RB’s guest house has no power, so that he can feel the pain. Maybe the power black out will hasten his departure from there. We don’t need a useless president there.

  7. 6.1% GDP growth where is the money???? This money is meant to maintain entities like Zesco. This MMD 20 year rule does not understand how important it is to build and develop infrastructures in Zambia. All they know is selling Zambia…But not developing it. Shame on you MMD you are acting like a thorn in Zambia’s side.

  8. Maybe Zesco should hire an expatraite to run the company. This is a result of mismanagement. How can a prominent company like Zesco not have a contingency plan. This affects development and even attracting investment. You know what …MMD is a thorn in Zambia’s development.

  9. just got back from Zed yesterday after 10 days. buildings are coming up everywhere but the basic infrastructure cannot support this growth. blackouts were daily, fuel shortages abound, no drainage exists, phone networks work poorly, internet is slow. the sensible thing would be to move the capital to a new city. we will pay dearly in 20 yrs time.

  10. #4, 6 and 9: Sometimes silence is golden…….. I am sure Veteran and other sensible people will comment when there is reason to open their mouths. What has President Banda got to do with lightning? It has and will always be there regardless of the leader in power whether Banda, dad Sata the 90 days miracle man, baby Sata, N’gondo, Mwila, etc etc, and regardless of who is chairman of ZESCO Board whether Zyambo, Muliokela etc etc. What is important is that ZESCO is moving to solve the problem.

  11. #16 the main point here is that a well managed company should have a contingency plan for such events. ..they call this risk management. This should never ever happen in any nation. The back up system should kick in. It is totally unacceptable and should not be tolerated as a norm of life in Zambia.

  12. #16 Silence is Golden in law these are what we call acts of God…beyond ones control….what can RB really do surely…silence is indeed GOLDEN at time…list you hallucinate.

  13. #23 God gives human beings wisdom… there should be another location which Zesco uses as a back up system. These managers know ahout disaster recovery plans. There is no excuse they get paid and have enough education to know the procedure. This is careless and makes Zambia lose alot of revenue. I reiterate if these Zambian mangers can not run Indeni or Zesco… get an expatriate with a record and qualification who will do things proffessionally. This is utter nonsense and won’t resolve Zambian incompetent managerial issues if not confronted.

  14. # 17 Well said and accepted, but you must also accept that we are an under-developed country. In order to extend electricity supply to this vast country (all of 752,000 sq km), the principle that has been applied particularly to the rural areas is one of “a little is better than nothing”. However electricity is such that when you taste the fruit, you will not want any interruption. Those engineers at ZESCO know what is required to avoid such situations but they are not magicians. Have you given them the required resources? Remember that you and I have for years rejected tariff increments? The effects: if you pay peanuts for that expensive commodity called electricity you get an equivalent service: no spare capacity, no spare transformers, load shedding etc. Plain facts of life.

  15. #26 You do have a point there. However, my concern is Zambia has this 6.1 % growth… Is it not the goverment duty to give Zesco the necessary resources to run effectively. ..even if it means subsidizing the cost. The consequences of black outs has far more reaching impacts on the economy …We all appreciate the work Zesco engineers do with the limited resources they have. I suppose my issue is where is Zambia’s revenue from foreign investors being spent…

  16. ZESCO is jus tryng 2prov dat they care more 4 foreigners than we Zambians, coz they export witout any problem.U can tel from da monies thy pay themsevs (see Ngugi Wa Thiogo’s ‘Devil on the Cross).
