L/Stone affected by the global credit crunch

Share

The Livingstone Tourism Aassociation (LTA) says the global credit crunch being faced by many developed countries has had adverse effects against the tourism industry.

LTA Secretary Frederick Mwendapole said the past six months had seen a low turn out in the tourism industry with some of the lodges and guest houses in Livingstone laying off staff.

He added that most hotels and lodges were operating at 40 percent as a result of the global recession and other factors that affected the country last year.

Mr Mwendapole was speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Livingstone today.

He described 2008 as the most trying year ever faced in the tourism sector adding that the death of former President Levy Mwanawasa was one of the greatest blow to the tourism industry as it caused a lot of anxiety and uncertainty in the economy of the country.

He said the October 30 Presidential elections also created anxiety in the nation thereby affecting the toursim sector.

Mr Mwendapole noted that cholera which hit the neighbouring Zimbabwe had caused a negative effect on tourism in Livingstone because of the proximity to the country.

Mr Mwendapole further observed that increased visa fees also affected the industry negatively as most tourists were not ready to pay for the increased fees.

He said the upped visas fees had a negative impact on the tourism industry from early 2008 until the end of last year when President Rupiah Banda announced a reduction in visas fees.

  1. Hey dillagence, play the game right…if you chinga me on nambala one, at least let me be nambala two, ka? Niza ku chosesa Redi cardi!

  2. Even a grade one could have said what Mwendapole said. We’ve heard enough of the problem-diagnosis, what are the measures being taken against it?

  3. the truth is that our tourism packages are very expensive.
We think of bringing down accomodation and flight costs.
    😉

  4. #9 I concur. The prices in L/stone are just too exagerrated. Last time I was there I couldn’t even manage a Safari or a cruise on the African Queen, though I had more than 500 Euros in my pocket!

  5. make it affordable for localz and then foreigners can as well come in numbers…for sure its very expensive…i infact plan to go with 5000russian roubles ..will i make it??? :d:d

  6. There is something seriouly wrong about pricing in Zambia…on average, we are more expensive than all our neighbours even Zim. Bussiness house have stuck to the Independence struggle prices…govt need to check this.

  7. YOU GUYS, COMPARE MFUWE WITH CHOBE (BOTSWANA) BY GOOGLING. MFUWE IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK BETTER THAN CHOBE WHICH IS JUST WAY DOWN BELOW THE TSWANA TOURISM SPOT RANKINGS.

  8. You should see the fares for car hires, for the equivalent price of a chigayo sounding toyota corolla you could hire a range rover in the uk for the same price for a day. Even the guest houses, hotels and lodges have cochroches and yet the prices they charge [-( . Zambia is too damn expensive you can travel to first world countries and paradise resorts in the carribean for even cheaper prices than zed

  9. For sure lodges are prohibitably expensive in L/stone and I can assure you that the few tourists visiting us are only doing so because of the problems in Zimbabwe. Mwendapole should wait until Mugabe is no longer presido and things start moving again in Zim. Even the few tourists his talking about will be on the other side of the river. Mwendapole and his gang should start thinking of developing infrastructure in L/stone. All roads are impassable in L/stone.

  10. These characters, you like charging high fees. And if tourists discover where the fees are reasonable with good infrastracture like Kenya, they wil be going there. You Charge high fees, but where you take the money no one knows.Because you are not even investing that money into the tourism sector to improve it.Why should other countries have fuel at a cheaper price, but in Zambia its very high.Ifibanthu fimo awe mwe.

  11. ka catherine namugala was saying the tourism sector would absorb people losing jobs in other economic sectors. these people are as thick as planks mwebantu. they don’t understand the impact of globalisation let alone globalisation itself. they will be crushed, to quote chiluba…LOL

  12. #17 Chewe: “Because you are not even investing that money into the tourism sector to improve it.Why should other countries have fuel at a cheaper price, but in Zambia its very high.” The money the tour operators make is banked in UK and other offshore accounts. They only convert it back into kwacha when they are paying salaries to malondas and waitresses. RB alepupafye ubwakupupa.

  13. Ba Nevers ako Kanono, ala kwena bwafya.Ka Namugala kale chita fye enjoy na RB.where ever Rb goes she wil be there also.Namugala, where are you going to take the people who have started loosing Jobs in your ministry?

  14. They say charity begins at home.If they made the prices offordable to to the locals things would be different. The reason they adopted an aggressive price structure is to keep the kabovas away…But that has now backfired. The whole tourism board should be abolished..

  15. If Las Vegas Nevada today charged the same prices like Livingstone hotels and motels Las Vegas will be a Ghost town, If Las Vegas depended upon people from Japan and Europe the city and casinos will be out of business,I will be glad to see Livingstone die completely let it become a Ghost town, so we can begin to think and build a better Livingstone again,Tourism is for the locals outsides are like cream on a pie.Hotels in Livingstone should be charging $25-$50 per night and food needs to be affordable too.Food in Zambia even fast food is way too expensive.

  16. Livingstone is an irie town. Me Rasta bredren run a lodge over deh. Every time me visit de lodge, it always full up of young tourists from Holland. Dem have nuff money fe hitch up inna Zambezi Sun but dem wud rather stay in de lodge becah it’s dem seh dem love it when dem can smoke weed freely.

  17. Pliz stop talking about the problems as this is the time we havr to look for solutions. Time to act. :x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x

  18. the crisis is everywhere.over here the price of everything is going up and they say the crisis hasn’t even taken full effect yet.maybe this is what my pastor used to tell me about – apocalypse now! :):):)**==**==**==

  19. My fellow Zambians, our leaders do not listen. If they see some of the sensible comments above, all they will say is mwayamba ma-politics. They will never listen to good advise. Zed is very rich but no pilot. Our leaders are greedy. Every corner of Zed has a potential of creating employment and wealth. Our leaders favour foregn investers becouse they will give them 0.5% shares from their profits which they will even deposit in offshore accounts. They don’t think about their own country and citizens. Yes someone might say some Zedians are lazy, but this starts with the leaders(politicians) including our traditional leaders. Leaders are surposed to be example.

  20. #27cont.
if aleader is corrupt, a thief, what do you expect of a guy at soweto market? They make these increases to try and make more money for them selves, but this does not help the country’s economy. All viable companies are in foregn hands, zedians are losing jobs becouse these guys have to bailout their big companies in the west where they belong. sad indeed.

  21. The credit crunch is not natural. It is a manipulation of events by the elite to bring on the NEW WORLD ORDER.Stop blaming yourselves for not investing in the industry. This world is controled by a few evil people whose agenda is to control all aspect of life.Their aim is to have 1 goverment = 1 currency =1 religion.Last year(2ooo7) Gordon Brown said “the new world order is is coming” just after becoming PM of UK.Wake up people and prepare for lives and for your families. The pound is in a free fall, very soon they will join the euro.Well come to the new world order.

  22. Lower charges first as a measuere so that u allow local pipo even no foreigners. Most calprite is govt putting ministers on appeasement not on qualifications.

  23. guys there are no solutions to problems in cuba now lol..
just enjoi 5o yrs of castro…congrats…and after that join zed
    job seekers…

  24. # 29 -1984 i wish everybody else knew whats going on."ITS CLOSER THAN WE THOUGHT".let he that has eyes see,we are living in the latter days.this crisis is has an evil agenda!! # 29 -1984 i wish everybody else knew whats going on."ITS CLOSER THAN WE THOUGHT".let he that has eyes see,we are living in the latter days.this crisis is has an evil agenda!!

    ILLUMINATI

  25. #34!wherever u r lol on this earth…that part of the world cant feel the crisis…bcos its waiting for donor funds like zed and zim….
how do you feel it lol???????

  26. don’t plz echo that song of credit crunch everytime and in any situ,we all know that.tourism in zed needs a lot of strategy in its present state.fo long time now, we’ve been meant to believe that ba zungus are the only tourists sidelining the locals.if yu make tourist sites +accomodation affordable to most zambians,yu’re bound to make profits.for instance, when yu go to the great wall in china, over 90% of tourists there are locals, thats what yu need to start thinking, bazungus yu’ll wait untill yu close yo tuma lodges.

  27. Very true this credit crunch talk is being used as a scapegoat for all problems. People forget zambia has been in a colonial crunch since 1964

  28. This is very fine, am cool with this problem because AIDS might slow down spreading because it worse in this developed countries and they just put it poor Africa.

  29. Not all establishments in Livingstone are outrageously expensive. Government should revert to the visa waiver system that was previously in place, meaning tourists with advance reservations did not pay for visas. Activities are expensive, this is true, Government should encourage competition in this sector as the only real way to achieve reductions. Not all the Livingstone roads are bad, but the Zimba-Livingstone stretch is dreadful it needs urgent fixing. There are deals on hire cars away from the main suppliers. We need direct flights from Europe to Livingstone to utilise the newly extended airport runway. 😕

  30. Just last year in October,i had to cough $5 for Fanta,$35 for lunch and ano ther $35 for Dinner at the Zambezi Sun Hotel.I agree with No 12.Had it not been for the company to sponsor i couldnt have managed. We are Zambian and in Zambia but you have to think twice before going for a vacation in the so called Tourist Capital.Even the Falls Park Shopping Complex is damn expensive. [-(

  31. Indeed the costs involved for one to be assured of some good lodging in livingstone is just too high, its one of the reasons that make people to shy away from the place ,locals and tourists alike.I think its one of the reasons why one meets a lot of zambians who have never physically seen he victoria force both locally and abroad, especially after started to learn about it from elementary school, what a shame ! :d:d

  32. # 16 it’s not for Ba Mwendapole n Gang to develop infrastructure in Livingstone by the way which infrastructure are you talking about. Our GRZ has misplaced priorities and # 39 is correct to say the Visa Waiver should be reintroduced as GRZ is being silly by the so called reciprocal visa fees being charged to most foreign nationals. Do Brits or Americans need our kwacha and how many Zed’s go these countries for holidays? It would be prudent if GRZ had professionals run Zambia Tourist Board as the current composition don’t ve an iota for tourism development in Zed but heft salaries and allowances.

  33. The cost of doing business in Zambia is very high so I believe some of those costs are passed on to customers. I know the majority of money made in tourism does not stay in Zambia or in Zambian banks but the solution is to invest in infrastructure roads, rail and air transport. This will develop our economy, get more people in work and then eventually local tourists will emerge.

  34. #29 & 34 I agree with you, the credit crunch is a carefully planned scam just like 911, hiv/aids, election of Obama and many other events. The ‘new world order’ is here. Just look at how everyone suddenly has to have a biometric passport even in Zambia, one of the many ‘orders’ from the illuminati. A One World Government is coming, in north america there is talk of forming one currency the Amero. In Europe, the pound will most likely be replaced by the euro, in africa there is talk of forming one government and currency through the African Union.

  35. # 45 Anonymous, you are correct the cost of doing business in Zed is simply out of this world hence the customer taking the killer punch. As for the flight of money, the GRZ is to blame as they have not put deliberate measures. The whole fiascal starts with the Investment Act which allows for foreign shareholding of up to 98% in business entities that should be reserved for locals i.e. Car Hire, Destination Management, Restaurants, curios selling etc. Though Zim in the sh.., our GRZ could learn one or two things in it’s Investment Act which had categories for local and foreigners. With this you will see infrastructure that currently lying idle in Vic Falls Town of Zim and elsewhere.

  36. how do you espect it not to be affected if the road leading to the city so called tourist city is impasseable? road network a disaster in zambia making the cities look dirty even when they are beautiful….chilakalipa tuposeko amano bane….

  37. 39 You are not telling the truth about the visa issue. You want the visa waiver because you are the people that benefited since your packages included the visa fees.Despite you racking in so much you could not work on the roads leading to your lodges. You still called on govt to repair them.

Visa fees constitute less than 0.05% of what a tourist spends. Your lodges and food are just too expensive due to your selfishness.

  38. The first Performance appraisal on this Govt by the Zambian people will be held on 1st Feb 09 based on the 3 months probation period. The second performance appraisal will be held 1st May 09 based on the 6 months probation period afterwhich the Zambian people will decide based on the outcome whether to ask them to resign honourably or if the performance is positive then a yearly performance appraisal will be conducted on 1st November of each year until the elections in 2011.This will apply to every Govt that will ever rule Zambia.LT please come up with topics relevant to these assessments on the due date to give an opportunity to Zambians to fairly & objectively assess the Govt.

  39. We must ask why all the big tourist enterprises in Livingstone are owned by non Zambians. Is it that Zambians have no faith in the industry? There are plenty of Zambians with enough money and access to credit now, come on Zambians, stop complaining, if you rally think that there is loads of money in tourism join in.

  40. Gvtmnt?? As a good parent you wer supose to look on the salaries first b4 you reduce the visa fees bcos that is the benefit of the investers…we zambians make monnie 4 them but at the end of the day we re given peanuts becos of the zam policy and selfish leaders. As at now Zed pipo will feel it “Credit Crunch” reason the New Gvtmnt did nt consider zambians first but foreigners first.pa Zed we still hav pipo who re gettng K350 thou and K400 thou monthely salary please ba “kateka” look in to that twalafwa things are bad??? **==

  41. #39 Mr Richard wat ever you call yo self?? you are 1 of the the liv/stone selfish investers in tourism b4 u talk about visa waiver and zimba liv road jst look at obote road the 1 going straight to yo lodge wat are you doing in zam as an invester and wat hav u done 4 zambia ask yo self!! as better investers “YOU and GRUBBY wer supose to maintain that road unfortunately u 2 cant think atleast i have thought 4 u pipo u re LUCK.# 50 to u i say Gud..dy. :d/:d/**==
