Noel Tosi is the new Zambia national soccer team coach

Share

Faz has confirmed that former Congo-Brazzaville coach Noel Tosi as the new Zambia national soccer team coach.

Tosi has been offered a three-year deal and he is due in the country shortly to discuss terms with Faz.

Faz revealed that Tosi was the second choice but got that the Frenchman got the job after an unnamed Dutchman who was the frontrunner for the post was said to have taken up another appointment in the Middle East.

Should Tosi agree terms with Faz, his first game in charge will be Zambia’s last Africa Cup Group 11 qualifier against South Africa on September 8 in Cape Town.

Meanwhile, the draws for the inaugural Barclays Cup that were due to be made today by Faz have been postponed until Monday.

  1. Tosi’s first assignment may end up being his worst, why? Zambia, playing in Cape Town is at a disadvantage because of the issue of low altitude. Cape Town is very low in altitude compared to Lusaka. Zambia may have problems with oxygen levels as they play. We have to prepare and plan to have enough time to practice to adjust. For instance practice in places like Chirundu with a low altitude not as low as Cape Town but good for practice.

  2. #1. So finally after FAZ over-deliberation on the selection we have a second choice man thrust down our throughts. Anyway it is a seems a very Zambian mentality. Fine, I will assess the man once he lands in Zed.

  3. Attitude cant be a problem man. Its not like all South Africans live at low attitudes. They will also have to acclamatise. but If you prepare well you dont need to go to Chirundu. You can go in 4 to 6 hours before the game-play and by the time attitude has effect you have already won and left the place.

  4. Ok.. i have a few questions about this selection process. Why did the “1st pick” opt for another country and not Zambia? On what terms was this short list made? And I agree with PezKu… why would they assign him Zambia’s most important game of the year as his first match?? If he wins it, he is an instant hero…but… if he fails, knowing Zambian soccer fans and their backwardness sometimes, he wont be given the light of day and someone will probably throw rocks at him. Zambians…

  5. So Phiri is lose of his job. Anyway its the Zambian way of doing things 11th hour the man has a hard task ahead I just wish him good and hard work.Maybe he should start preparing the 2010 team. Iam opptimistic in life but I find it difficult to accept such decision. The ball game is always a probability. See what the boys will do and manage.

  6. It sucks to be a Zambian right now. Kwena ba FAZ how can you pick up left overs? Phiri has done a lot for Zambian football…..

  7. It is the nature of Zambia, we like second best in everything. So even pa South expect second best position. FAZ is aware more than everyone else that the man is not fit and that is why he was there second choice! Too bad..

  8. I’m just imagining how this Tosi will be TOSSED OUT of Zambia after attaining our second best position in South Africa.

  9. Does anyone know what credentials Tossi has?
South Africa choose a world cup quality coach to build a world cup team.
Are there no other coaches who have atleast have good cup and tournament records than Tossi?

  10. FAZ, now send Patrick Phiri,Fighton,Kenneth on proper courses abroad.Get them to make study tours in and outside of Africa to gain exposure.Invest,Invest,Invest,Invest in what we have and after 3 years we will have “local” options to consider. We need a program to develop and expose local coaches otherwise we will end up like the UK where all the successful coaches are foreigners!!

  11. This man is a failure, he has been fired all over africa the most recent being when Zambaia were held to Nill Nill draw against Conco Brazerville his most recent team, we dont need this man!

  12. Japst3r101 #4 I concur with you, if Tosi wins he is a hero, Pat Phiri will quickly be forgotten. It is just too sudden for this new man to take charge, how about if his relationship with the players is less than cordial? Granted, we heard of the squabble that occured in the Zambia team bus after our last encounter at Konkola, where some players expressed lack of faith in each other and the coach. But Pat Phiri is a ZAMBIAN, who understands the players and their mentality, and can get the best out of them. We need to cast aside this archaic misconception that the white man (or the term we Zambians love to abuse “expatriate”) is superior.

Regarding altitude, I don’t think that will be a problem. Johannesburg is at a similar sort of altitude to Lusaka, and PSL players in JHB have never complained about the low altitude when playing Ajax CT.

  13. Interesting from #14 Kapala, why are we getting a guy who was fired for the same Job we want him to do?
Look at this as an example “Tossi is fired for failing to drive a minibus and there is Faz saying he can Drive a Double decker?”

  14. I would like to see the Chipolopolo association transform from just being a cheap singing and shouting support group, to one that can mobilize the nation of Zambia in times that politics, government and FAZ fail to work.

Why can’t a Chipolopolo honest leader visit some foreign Embassy’s in Zambia in a bid to secure a scholarship for Patrick Phiri? Once that is secured let the nation know how the rest of us can send additional support to Phiri while abroad in training. Please, at this point do not chip in with the usual cheap Zambian politics that will say “Zambians, we love handouts”, just because one suggests to ask for a coaching scholarship for Patrick Phiri. Some of you never know how great Phiri is in the world of Zambian soccer. I watched Phiri at Nkoloma stadium for years when he played with greats such as Godfrey Chitalu, Clement “Soweto” Banda, Alex Chola, Francis Kajiya, Obby Kapita, Ghost Mulenga plus plus plus. At that time he played for Red Arrows under a then player coach Boniface Simutowe. He is one of the few Zambian soccer living legends. Lets praise people while they are still alive. We love to present trophies posthumously.

  15. Bane: Tosi was chased in Brazaville Congo…Even you guys will do the same to him. Typical of African behaviour.

  16. Itis incredible that more than four decades after independence we are still employing third rate foreigners to run our beloved National Team.

  17. This Tosi guy is a joke and will not add absolutely nothing positive to our soccer.

But anyway give him a chance to embarass us.We are now immuned to soccer heartbreaks

  18. I agree with “Nkandu #15” dnt know where altitude comes into play. Zambians and there excuses. And what is this “misunderstanding” in FAZ? All of a sudden no one seems to know that Tosi has signed a 3 year deal… or has he? Zambia’s “bureaucratic” system always fails. So much paper work and and back door deals. Guys, this is the 21st century.

(and Nkandu, are u the same from the ISL days? this is Japi, Eddie’s bro.. intreresting seeing you on here)

  19. hey Japi how u doing bra? Yep its me, I’m at Wits now studying Mech.Eng. Hit me on [email protected]. How’s Eddie? I was at a East African/Zambian party last night in Rosebank, it was great, lots of ISL alumni were there. Are you still in CPT?

  20. All coaches are hired to win matches and rophies-and are fired if they fail to deliver. Nothing wrong. Phiri is technically and especially tactically inadequate. We cant compare with RSA, they have the money we dont.

  21. Hey Pipo all ur comments are valid,so let me say some here this Tsotsi ok whatever the heck his name is,I smell some the way he got hired am ask the higher authority to stop this P.E trainer from taking the job as coach for chipolopolo boys, these are the things we’re trying to correct whats up with my beloved Zambia gosh! I think it’s time for current FAZ to ready the word EXIT on their football house doors and don’t come back the next day who needs you anyways,so stop this mess and get a coach with a proven resume be it from africa, europe or whereever but a good coach not a P.E trainer cause we have a number of those already thus why we always get beat by teams from north africa all the time and remember this man will getting tax payers money from poor Zambian people who needs to see their team win cause you know what it brings in my peoples lifes when zambia beats Botswana sorry I meant to say wins.

  22. Pipo honestly why ENGAGE Tosi. He failed to ‘drive a Toyota Hiace in Congo and FAZ wants to give him a CR’ Lets look at the Coaches around the globe and get the best. Mind you a team is the coach and players. Lets develop football at youth level too. Pat has failed to qualify Zambia once and it may become twice. Fired at ZANACO and Faz wants to send for coaching course abroad. Something is really going wrong at FAZ.

  23. This Tossi thing is a joke. Even Congo Braza are laughing at us. Why get finished goods? Bushe ba Faz do you really think? Listen to what the people are saying. Its not just a question of having an expatriate coach, but quality matters. I am telling you Zambian soccer has gone to the dogs, or rather the dogs have gone to Zambian soccer. Meanwhile expect a thorough hiding in Cape Town next month.

  24. We were better off with Patrick Phiri. He started this ball rolling the least we can do is to let him finish. We will beat South Africa and it will be unfair to hail the praises on this new guy when phiri has been assembling the team. Tosi should not shine on Patrick Phiri’s shine.

  25. Does anyone know anything about Noel Tosi? is he really the man we want? In my opinion Patrick phiri should have been made coach he is a far much better coach than this guy. FAZ should at least let Patrick phiri be in charge of our last game in Cape Town.it is amazing how we fail to capacitate our own but rather do with trash from abroad.

  26. Ba Chifita mu FAZ, it’s no surprise , the guys at the helm seem to be from a generation before, instead of inspiring Phiri, they kick him in the teeth, not becoz he has failed – inspite of performing, the overriding fact against him – is being Zambian!!!! That’s why we wallow in the muck we find ourselves in.
Expatriates come for one simple thing – To earn money! For as long as it is flowing, they won’t blink an eyelid, they laugh all the way to the bank whether we lose or win. If Tosi was a high flying coach, he would be coaching in France, at least even in their lower leagues; I suspect expats in FAZ are used as conduits to cream off bucks – there is no other logical explanation for removing a coach producing results!!

  27. Coaches – Nkana Red Devils

At the beginning of the 1980’s Rhokana United sponsors decided to engage an expatriate english Coach to replace Henry Kalimukwa and Stone Chibwe for the team which was not doing very well. And so that they could compete with the cross town new phenonmenon Power Dynamoes with their internationally qualified coaches Fred Mwila and Jim Pasquil.

Arrival of the english coach Jeff Butler at Nkana brought radical changes to the team. He introduced the 4-4-2 system of for the first time in Zambia. Immediatly the team began it’s winning ways. Fighton Simukonda with coaching qualifications was brought in from Vitofoam as assistant coach. The executive refused and insisted that long time Rhokana player Moses Simwala understudy Jeff while Fighton became captain. When Jeff left Moses consolidated the side and Rhokana changed the name to red Devils and become indomitable for eleven years.

The lesson is that there must always be continuity on the coaching bench.

  28. Just how many coaches have been fired in Zambia. Let us look back. The job of coach is about being fired if u do not perform bane ifyo chaba.

  29. Patrick Phiri is certainly not the man for the job. At one time Zambia failed to qualify for the Nations Cup finals when he was in charge. And in this campaign Zambia are heading for the same result under him. Those who are crying for him to continue are just making empty tin noise. If you can see you are heading for failure its good to act-and quickly not when you have one match to play. I think Kalusha should have been brought back for the last three games of qualifying and then leave the team to a new coach at the finals.

  30. Soccer Fan No 2 (32):Why is it PP has failed.is it the players, the strategy or our team is just not good enough and doesn’t deserve a place in the finals? Kalu was a great player but he didn’t exactly transform our team.I’m suggesting we start a program of training a number of local alternatives.Whilst this new coach is with the national team PP,Fighton and co can start a local training programs to enhance the skill levels of premier league coaches etc.As PP,Fighton and co get advanced training and much needed continental exposure we are are creating a pool of local coaches who could take over first as deputy national trainers and then as a national trainer.we cannot run away from training what we have and PP,Fighton are the most experienced and they are still young enough to contribute.

  31. Original Pundit our team is good enough. The players are world class. Christopher katongo is a robust goal-scoring midfielder with the potential to outshine Frank Lampard. Collins Mbesuma has goal poaching instincts that can be polished to Roger Milla proportions. I can go on and on but remember these boys were in the team that got a silver medal at the All Africa Games in South Africa. That team needed nurturing by good coaches and it was going to become like the one that perished in Gabon. Kalu has not been given the full chance to complete what he started. When he arrived the team was being whacked by Benin and was failing to qualify for Nations Cup finals. Under Kalu they qualified-that is certainly transformation. He needed to be given the chance to take the team to 2008 and if he was to fail to reach the finals then we could have said goodbye to him. However, I agree with you that we need to create a pool of good coaches who can drive football standards at a steady pace.

  32. Ba Soccer Fan No 2(34), your comments and praise are that of a die-hard..i have nothing but respect for your optimism. We hope Bashi Morientes rediscovers his golden boots in Turkey and Chris Katongo breaks into a far more superior league.I look at Benni Macarthy,Steven Pinear,Micheal Essien,Obi Mikel,Benjani,Samuel Et’o and co. and i say to myself it’s true, we have such players in Zambia also!!

  33. Fans to restrain FAZ from hiring coach Tosi
    By ELIAS CHIPEPO

THE Zambia Voluntary Soccer Fans Association (ZAVOSOFA) is to obtain a court injunction restraining FAZ from recruiting Frenchman Noel Tosi as national soccer team coach.
ZAVOSOFA strongman, Peter Makembo said in Lusaka yesterday that the decision by FAZ to employ Tosi as coach was done in bad faith, non-transparent and as stake holders, the fans were aggrieved.
Makembo expressed worry that FAZ had issed conflicting statements concerning the employment of the coach and was surprised to hear that a trainer was found without even interviewing other potential applicants.
He said FAZ must explain the procedure used to pick Tosi who was fired by Congo Brazzaville after a dismal performance and also disclose other candidates who were shortlisted for the Zambia coaching job.
Makembo said it was sad that procedure was not followed in hiring Tosi, and that the decision was not welcomed by all the FAZ executive committee members as evidenced by technical committee chairman Henschel Chitembeya’s sentiments that he was not aware of the development.
“How do you invite someone for interviews without the technical committee chairperson being aware?, they must be some confusion in the FAZ executive because it’s difficult to understand how they could employ a person who coached a team that Zambia beat and he was subsequently fired,” Makembo charged.
He said his association would get a court order restraining FAZ from employing the Frenchman without explaining exactly how the decision was reached at ignoring laid down procedures.
Makembo regretted that FAZ executive members did not meet to agree on the issue of employing the coach, leading to the confusion ahead of the crucial Ghana 2008 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against South Africa next month .
He also wondered how FAZ could be sending coach Patrick Phiri for a coaching course in Germany barely a week before his team takes on South Africa in Cape Town.
It would be disturbing to have a new coach take charge of the team at a short notice.
“FAZ must be serious in the way they handle such matters, How can you employ someone without revealing others who had applied for the top coaching job? Let them come out in the open and tell us the procedure used or else we shall take the association to court.
“We will get a restraining order so that they are stopped from employing Tosi,” a visibly annoyed Makembo said.

  34. I think it is time FAZ became accountable to the public. The restraining order should be put in place untill we know how FAZ got to the decision of hiring a coach who could not beat us .That coach failed to outshine PP and yet FAZ has the audacity to hire him and fire our man, what a nerve. We will support the the restraining order and if there is anything we supporters can do to correct the situation ,we are in.It is better to fail with our own than to hire a failure ,pay him alot of money and fail anyway. We are 43 years old and we call our self a soccer nation yet we cant even have faith in a Zambian to be in charge of our soccer team. What impression are we giving to the world, that we cant be incharge of our own affairs. We would rather take a piece of crap to be incharge just because he is white. Come on FAZ KK taught us to be better than that.

  35. It’s sad that Chris is not having game time at Brondby.Justice was Chris even on the bench? I wonder what has gone wrong cos the guy started on a bang when he got to Denmark. I haven’t watched any of his games in Denmark or seen him in training but knowing Chris he can’t fail to make the grade in Denmark maybe the coach needs to tell him why hes not playing.
If not his agent needs to begin looking for other options for the guy.

  36. Just be patient Katongo will sine in Denmark. There s no need for him to move now. He is a great player and a hard worker.

If the coach is being unfair, definitely he will be proved wrong

You can not put a good man down

  37. Sibs-SA. He now plays for Brøndby reserves. This is what happened to Douglas Mwamba and here we go again. Katongo should himself tell the club in BIG LETTERS for that matter, USE ME OR SELL ME chapwa why uku latina ba mwisa. I recall one Nigerian guy named Friday Elaroy bought by Brøndby in 1990, just when I came to Denmark, the guy was always either on the bench or in the stands, he never took time to wait. He just packed his bags and left without even informing the club. So if Katongo takosepo pa mulandu wa kutina aba sungu ala papa sana, he will be finished.

  38. Kemps: I watched Chris personally in Silkeborg just when he came, he is a very good player who deserves first team football not Captain wa ba Zed mu ma reserves, no,no icho ine nakana he must move on.

  39. Justice ukutina aba sungu iyo .Some of them just discriminate i bet there some abasungu who can’t even measure up to Chris talent but are playing. Why buy a player if you not going to use him.A Player can go to the coach ask what he’s doing wrong at training so that he can work on that.If theres nothing wrong hes doing then he deserves to play unless the other guys playing are much better.
In SA some coaches at times just bench foreigners for no apparent reason uku kupata fye coach from no where.I know it’s tough playing in Europe, one is got to adapt, there issues iya kada also.
At times ni prayer fye coaches come and go.Henry was labeled a failure at Juvetus when he joined them from Monaco. But when the guy went to Arsenal it was a different story.I’m not saying the guy shud move immediately let him fight but if things don’t change he shud think of other options.Anyway hes barely been there for a year theres still time to prove himself at Brondby.

  40. Sibs you are very right. Kumankala majealousy over foreign players everywhere. Lelo Mbele a DRC player was written off by both reporters and coaches in South Africa. I understand he ended up playing in a second division team but he was recently bought by CS Faxien in Tunisia. The man destroyed South Africa’s champions Mamelodi Sundowns last week scoring and making all the goals as they lost 4-0. Sometimes its better to move on if you have confidence in your abilities.

  41. This is what am talking about big ups to Pastor Makembo moblise the masses and stop the mess Faz want to bring, why not just take ur time and employ someone who can drill the team with some modern soccer skills we watch around the globe finish, way to go (ZAVOSOFA)you got my back lets do it.

  42. Soccer fan No 2, You are right on the spot bro. Foreign players are discriminated indeed. For instance here in South Africa particularly if a team is coached by a South African coach with exception of Jomo Sono of Cosmos. You gave a good example of Tresor Lelo Mbele who left Pirates after being dumped and loined CS Faxien. Tresor Mbele is on fire in Tunisia as we speak. So Katongo should try and work extra hard but if things do not improve, he should consider moving on.

  43. The fact is that Katongo featured in all Brøndbys games when he came. He played well and scored some goals. So what is wrong now where brøndby are not even doing fine. They were even beaten 5-0 in their second game of the season. My point is that Katongo should ask the coach why he is not using him, that is all. Just how is he going to perform for Zed when he is not playing??? The same happened with Mbesuma at pompey. Katongo should find another club and it should bve now.

  44. I support Makembo’s move totally! FAZ should be made accountable to the people, too many people in zambia are a law unto themselves, feel they need to account to no one, am sure once the injunction is effected FAZ will hvae no option but to follow laid down procedures of fair & open employment without any prejudice!

  45. The whole issue of employing an expat coach rests with Kalu as the head, he is the one making the mess.We lost a very good chance of the coaching pair of Kalu and Ben. The two should have been left to continue. Faz should readvertise the coching post and make a fresh shortlist. The Zambian people have spoken “we dont want Tossi”. PP is a failure too, he is failling to qualify chipolopolo for CAN for the second time. What is the FAZ doing in terms of preparing the team? Nothing.

Let us give Brondby a chance, there might be a reason for Chris playing in the reserve, you know most african players suffer from lack of fitness after a long break. Am sure he will be used in the next matches to come. Look at what is happening to Collins in Turkey two weeks extensive training schedule before unlishing the player. That is what will happen to Chris.

  46. chip, Chris did not have a long break, infact he was in better form when he returned cause he had played for Zamba Vs Chad. And what do you mean “give brøndby a chance” do u think Katongo is growing young. chip u forget easily. Let me tell u I am talking from experience “DOUGLAS MWAMBA” got finished at this same club, 2 (TU) years in the reserves and u say give Brøndby a chance. Why give them a chance when they Brøndby do not want to give Chris a chance. The boy is in top form, that I know

  47. **Sorry chip the posting was from me*** Sorry bro

chip, Chris did not have a long break, infact he was in better form when he returned cause he had played for Zamba Vs Chad.

  48. Coach wa ba Brønby ali tumpa fye Ch……… I am telling u I am so annoyed, ne jersey in Brøndby colours I bought na li chiposa.

  49. Gentlemen strengthen your on league this pro idea is destructive because of interest of conflict. Look in the champion league only 3 foreign players are allowed to play. Recently who listen to the BBC Have yoursay last week can conquer with that there is no interest to mode African footballers in legends by western teams apart from using them for finance gain.

  50. Take it easy ba Justice, there might be a reason for Chris not playing in the Senior team. Just wait, mark my words.

  51. For an expat coach, FAZ should go for Colwyn Rowe from Botswana. What has Tosi done? I heard Rowe is on the shortlist. He’z been there for a year now, and his non-lose ratio is around 80%. Letz remember, this is with a bunch of amateur footballers in general, and haz turned them from a defending team to an attacking one. I’m sure he can take us where we need to be.

  52. You recognize thus considerably in terms of this matter, made me in my view imagine it from a lot of numerous angles. Its like men and women aren’t fascinated except it’s something to accomplish with Girl gaga! Your personal stuffs outstanding. At all times deal with it up!
