Wednesday Zambian Football Round-up

Share

City of Lusaka have signed a major sponsorship deal with National Milling Corporation (NMC).

The deal is initially for one year and for undisclosed sum.

NMC managing director Peter Cottan said today that the sponsorship deal was financial and would include branding the team jerseys and balls with his company’s imagines.

His company would also undertake rehabilitation works at City’s iconic homeground of Woodlands stadium.

This will be NMC’s second major in-road into sports in Zambia after their association with intercontinental women’s super bantamweight boxing champion Esther Phiri.

This is the second major corporate partnership City have undertaking over the last 10 years.

In 1999, City partnered with Cavmont Bank for four years.

City finished 12th in the Premier Division last season in their first year back in the top-flight since 2003.

In other news, Nkana are set to prize Emmanuel Siwale from division one north club Kitwe United to the promoted 11-time top-flight champions over the next 24 hours.

Siwale is set to be offered a long-term deal to leave Garden Park and move across Kitwe after meeting with Nkana club officials shortly.

The former Chambishi FC and Lusaka Celtic coach is set to take over from Beston Chambeshi who quit Nkana suddenly two weeks ago to take up a coaching job in Botswana.

Siwale leaves United after a season in charge at Garden Park starting last May after taking over from Francis Mutembo.

United last season finished in sixth place on the table in division one north.

Incidentally, Siwale will take over at Nkana who were promoted back to the Premier Division at the end of last year together his former club Chambishi.

Meanwhile, demoted National Assembly have appointed Dean Mwiinde as head coach.

Mwiinde, who is also Zambia Under-23 assistant coach, takes over from Chris Chibuye who was fired last October.

Assembly has been under the temporal care of ex-Power Dynamos and Zambia midfielder Alex Namazaba since the latter part of the 2007 season.

Assembly were demoted last season after four years in the top-flight.

Mwiinde is hoping his magic will work this coming season for Assembly in division one south after guiding Konkola Blades to promotion at the end of the 2005 campaign.

He led Konkola Blades back to promotion in 2005 when he replaced Fodson Kabole that same year after they were demoted from the Premier Division in 2004.

And in international football, Zambia Under-17 women’s team opponents Ghana Under-17 arrive tomorrow.

The two teams will be in action at Woodlands Stadium this Saturday in a preliminary round FIFA 2008 World Under-17 Women’s Cup first leg qualifier.

  1. From now i ll start by bunga bwa NMC, they r doing a comendabo job lets suport the brand pipo.

By the way wat do u think of Adams in admin(FAZ)

  2. Thank you Mr. Peter Cottan, you have shown the way and I wish other companies emulate your organization. Yours is a practical approach to sports. It’s nice to see the American Dream (in Mr. Peter Cottan)being transferred to Zambia.

  3. friendly advice if you are looking for a coach try TAIWAN, MALAYSIA OR INDONESIA! IT SHOULDN’T AWALYS BE A WHITE MAN.

  4. THE CHIPOLOPOLO BOYS NEED SOME GOOD PHYSICAL TRAININGS AND PROPER DIET. THEY SHOULD STOP ILLICIT BEER AND WOMANIZING. WEED SHOULD ALSO BE DISCOURAGED

  5. So this guy PP has only made one change. I fail to understand We need a new coach with Lwandamina and Wedson Nyirenda as fulltime Assistants, if not we should give up playing football at international level. It is a waste of money wihich could be spent on people that are sufferring. My daughter was so disappointed when she saw Zambia being clobbered 5-1. It seems we will never be better

  6. Can someone honestly tell me, has there been anything zambia has done which is right apart from allowing more pastors to form churches and preach about tithing?

  7. A good coach is someone who can make changes when required. The same dudes in defence and midfield are making the same mistakes. They’re just lucky its not a larger margin. Again they’re leaving men free in and around the box. ALL BALL WATCHING.

  8. #21 Mind your self. You can’t be insulting God like that. You be surprised that at the day of judgement the same God you are worshing is Allah. All along you’ve been contributig sensible ideas but now you’re becoming a fundamentalist. You have a nice name and your postings should reflect that.

  9. you zambian guys are too rabid, fanatical, self-possessed,self-assured for nothing. Even when you know that your team is the waste so far BUT STILL CONTINUOU BEING OPTIMISTIC AND OVERZEALOUS ! Other conutries like ETHIOPIA or LA REUNION or Djibouti could have taken that spot. WASTED SPOT. SHAME INDEED

  10. It’s a brave performance, but they lack real cunning and guile to score. Defense is still panicking, they fail to follow and anticipate the danger. Chamanga is not doing an awful lot…

  11. Imwe guys, am i the only one who feels that our coach is behaving irrationally? how can he have his team of blundering misfit defenders still playing in such a crucial game after they f;;;ked up in the last game? this is madness!!!!!

  12. Where are you from Abdulaziz? Do you live on Earth? Which country?
Don’t you have anything better to do in your life rather than talk bullshit?

  13. #21you see how good abdulaziz’s coments. He has never insulted the chrstian God.This means that he has respects for other people’s Gods. His comments are directed to football.

  14. Ba Justice take it easy, naiwe Abdul, avoid ama setting, especially in a situation were people are upset, dont tempt people.

  15. ABDULAZIZ, im so ready to plant a size 12 foot up your a.s.s. You have a little too much to say,we dont need your constant banter here.WA_ BE..
Zambia are seeing alot of the ball but i cant understand why we are so poor at taking set-pieces. have the boys not been drilled? Chamanga is a passenger at the moment.

  16. Has coach Phiri been like this all the time? He has done strange things in the last game and the current one. He doesn’t seem to be interested in winning.

  17. i am a littl concerned that we have taken no lessons defensively from the training sessions and the other two games, there has to be another combination of defenders that can work better.Oh, and my apologies fellow bloggers for losing my cool with the insignicant abdulaziz; that was beneath my standards.Im just so emotionally charged at the moment; I have hope we can come away with something in this game

  18. PP was a coach in tanzania few years back and he failed to tick there , was booted out. He comes to zambia and we want to use him as a prime coach , that is BS. He should go.

  19. Abdulaziz, you were supporting Sudan. How many goals have they scored? answer that question and you will know which one is the worst team in the tournament.

  20. Ine I am tired of Abdupono, and I will say what I feel, bushe does uyu makaka know my football history of Zambian soccer? Let him shut up. And just who the hell are Arabs, ba mu samba pa matako, we have lost as Zedians, but that is our own problem tosolve and not Allah or Muhamadi Chondi naka na ine ala, ata se bane, cause we loose a game is not the end of the world, as pr.camel ki ka ra

  21. #41.Be carereful justice kapusha. You think i don’t know your details. This is the net man.You think i can’t see your computer?Don’t let me go far.

  22. A fair performance by Zambia. The defence improved towards the end. I was impressed by Kalaba…he was the only guy able to put in good crosses. All the teams beat Sudan 3-0, so it shows that if we had a good defence, we would’ve been in with a shot of the QF.

  23. Mario (#61) I agree with you about Kalaba. I don’t understand why he did not come on earlier. Going back to the Sudan game, you would think he would have gotten the nod over Adubelo. Is this a case of the coach playing favorites?

  24. Well the defence was good today. I think the strike force wasted a lot of chances particularly in the first half before Egypt scored. That is another department that need improvement. I don’t know if this boy from the French League is really a good finisher. Wasted tons of chances. He needs to improve on finishing. It’s about scoring goals.

At least we did not lose to an ARAB nation. We can go home proud. An we will be back and watch it next time

  25. PP, bless him, is not proactive enough. We have the potential to be amongst the top 8 in africa, deep down, everyone knows it! It is very feasible and is not a miracle, whether people can make and let it happen is the issue.

  26. #44 I don’t insult as such i’ll not insult you.But i’d like to tell you that i’m zambian,african,black and christian.

  27. #64I don’t insult as such i’ll not insult you.But i’d like to tell you that i’m zambian, african, black and christian.

  28. both the sudanese and zambian the boys came out brave.the attitude has been good throughout! they have just been let down by poverty and DISEASE back in zambia.

  29. I wish to appologise to the nation for insiting Patrick Phiri to drop defence pillar Elijah Tana. I am sure every Zambian will forgive me.

  30. Guys, we are all Zambian fan hurt by the elimination. No need to insult or respond to provocation by guys like Abdul???. We should regroup and focus on reorganization NOT just the team but the administration, too. Go Zambia, Go: Today was a decent performance though we missed some sure chances.

  31. DON’T BLAME THE BOYS. YOU SHOULD BLAME THE COUNTRY AS A WHOLE. FAILING TO TEACH THEM ABOUT PRIORITIES. WHICH ONE COMES FIRST BEER, MARIJUANA, WOMEN, OR CAREER?

  32. Abdulaziz, did you say Sudan is playing well? so far they are the only team to concede 9 goals and score none Hahaha. And how about the Atlas Lions? they are out there gnashing their teeth! Tihihehehahahaha! Kwena na ciwama.

So far Zed is the only team the Pharaos have failed to beat.
We will deal with them the next we meet.

    Viva Chipolopolo. Zed for life!

  33. Dear optimists,
I hope u’ve learned something from this tournament, i.e., that nothing comes out of nothing. We were called names (armchair critics, doomsayers, etc)but here we are, Zambia is out early like we told u it would . If we remain stubborn with the empty arguments, we shall end up like this mu 2010 and beyond. So wake up Zambia, lets demand investment in sport from our government. We are the ones who pay tax, remember?
    Later.

  34. BROTHERS why don’t you all stand up and blame the country as a whole, FACTS……. ZAMBIA IS too poor, IF YOU HAVE PROPER clubs, stadia, educating and exporting players into europe,PEOPLE WITH BRAINS AND NOT CORRUPT AND NOT ILLUSIONED LIKE MOST OF YOU BLOGGERS! ZAMBIA would have MANAGED TO GO TO THE NEXT STAGE

  35. Abdulaziz walid comment about football. These are insults now.cool or else you be traced.you are going too far.this is the net.

  36. Now that the outing for Zed is over, its time to do some house keeping. Remove those FAZ officials who need to be removed and start working on the World Cup qualifiers.

  37. Well! Thats it boys until after 2 solid yrs. This should be end for Bakala, Musonda, Nketani and Billie Mwanza. They are not footballers. Felix was not in form tonight but I forgive him coz he’s been the only oustanding player for Zambia. Why didn’t PP play Chintu in the Cameroun game and that Himoonde, they looked more solid. Musonda again gave away that Egyptian goal. Anyway, I predicted at the begining of the tournament that First in-first out. Let PP go back to school even though I feel he has passed his learning age… Lets now focus on putting the FAZ house in order and build from there…

  38. Abdul aziz is straight dropping japati bombs on you . He is probably posting from kamwala mosque while praising prophet mohammed( may PISS(mitundo) be on him)

  39. We should lear from our experince and keep our heads high. Soccer will always be there and we should plan, prepare and invest in order to put forth a good challenge. Thank you to those of us that were always proud of Zed. We will always be Zedians and our responsibility is to stay true to the country we love. Keep well everyone.
    I AM PROUD OF YOU!

  40. DEAR ZAMBIANS…

ZAMBAI IS THE BEST COUNTRY TO BE A PART OF AND WE (EXCEPT FOR ‘ABDU’) ARE BLESSED TO BE A PART OF IT!

OUR BOYS DID A COMMENDABLE JOB! WE ARE PAST THE CAMEROUN MISTAKES, THIS GAME WAS NOT ABOUT GOING TO THE NEXT ROUND…. IT WSA ABOUT PRIDE AND IMPROVEMENT: GRADUALLY, STEADILY YET SURE!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE TEAM, I SALUTE YOU WITH BOTH HANDS!

THEY PLAYED SELFLESSLY AND WITH A WINNING ATTITUDE- THAT IS THE WAY TO SUCCESS!

    I DECLARE YOU CHAMPS! HEROES!

YOU HAVE DONE THE NATION PROUD!

    THANK YOU!

  41. ZAMBIAN COACH AND ADMINSTRATORS!

WELL, I SAY LETS END PHIRI TO SCHOOL IN BRAZIL, UK OR ITALY FOR A COURSE FROM MY TAX MONEY…

    TEDDY?

HE OPERATES UNDER DIFFICULT CONDITIONS, HE HAS NO SALARY BY THE WAY. HE IS NOT A FOOTBALL PLAYER… HE IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAPPENS ON THE PITCH!

THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE TEDDY AND GOOD LUCK WITH THE ELECTIONS!

    KALU? HANIF?

  42. hey max my brother how are you doing? tempers are down now right? are u coming with me to welcome the zambian national team?

  43. Abdul, you’re very talented at stirring. Some people are saying that you’re actually Zambian. But I wouldn’t think a Zambian would say the things that you say.

  44. I believ that Zambia did well. I am not for the idea of changing the coach. Phiri should just be sent for more coaching courses to improve on the tactical and technical discipline of the team. Changing the coach will mean starting all over again. Look at Angolan coach Luis Oliveira Concalves. He is been with Angola thru thick and thin. Look at where Angola is now. The team should also be maintained with the exception of Nketani and Bakala.

  45. I am not dissapointed at all by the performance of the boys and proud of the Chipolopolo boys. We have to build on where we have ended for AFCON 2010 and WC 2010. The worst mistake we can ever make is to dismuntle the team. We need new inclusions from U 20 and U 23.
The analysts on SS3 Thomas Mlambo, William Shongwe and Clemence Westerholf even praised our team and said Zambia do not deserve to leave Ghana now. There is still hope.

  46. We have to put our house in order starting with FAZ. Improve the state of our stadia so we dont have to play 2010 WC and AFCON qualifying games in a foreign land. As said above we need Phiri. Let him go for further coaching courses. We dont need a foreigner to solve Zambia’s football problem. Sinkala, Mbesuma, Sichone and Tana should be considered for future assignments. These will add experience to the team. Very WC AND AFCON qualifying games will start. Somewhere around May 2008. Its not far. So we need srious preparations. The earlier the better. SHARP!!

  47. Last three sentences, I meant to say… Very soon WC and AFCON qualifying games will start. Somewhere around May. Its not far. So we need serious preparations.

I was impressed with debuntant Hichani Himoonde. We need people like him in defence, tall and huge. All the best mother Zambia in future assignments.

  48. We also need to invest more in youth football development. Ivory Coast have a prestigious soccer academy whose graduates include Kolo Toure, Kalou, Eboue etc. The results of that investment is there for all to see. Let’s not expect to reap where we did not sow, it’s simply not going to happen! FAZ chews alot of money on red tape and bureaucratic crap, we need a visionary leader there who will be able to attract corporate sponsorship for youth development. Abash Mulonga & team, you clearly lack the vision needed to take us to greater heights.

  49. hey guys we played well, and i hope we don’t keep the coach and the team. we just need many friendly games. bravo zed. beaten but not broken!!mwanamayo 4 life.

  50. Iwe Billy tapali ifyo ulelanda man!! Better keep quiet! Patrick has been the worst Zambian coach ever. He can’t read the game, team selection poor, untimely substitutions and no strategy!! Zambia has very good and talented players, all they need is a good coach to nature them into professional players. Patrcik lacks all these qualities and no wonder he was booted out at Simba stars in TZ. He is too dull a coach!! Patrick out, Fighton out.

  51. #123, can u pilz tell us phiri record? since we started our qualifications we played played 6 games, phiri won 3, draw2, lose 1. we qualified on top. in our Afcon group , won 1 , lose 1 and drw 1. and don’t think this is a bad record. the reason why we don’t win the Afcon, is tht everytime we are booted out we fire the coach. we need to keep phiri maybe just send him to more courses and maybe bring in a techinal advisor. we made the same mistake with KALU, we shouldn’t have fired me. 2010 is almost here. so keep the all team. change FAZ PRZ.

  52. BA LULA,I have had a good chance to be close to pp even when he was coach at club level. I tell you one thing, technically pp is poor,he can not read games and he sort of a coach is is so ford of one tactic and one things change then he becomes blank! But one thing I can not take away from pp is descipline!!I think he can still be attached to the team as part of desciplinary committe.

At Nkana it used to take supporters at times to force pp to make a change. It was good that times Nkana was well sponsored and had self desciplined and talented players other he was going to get a first boot from there.

I do not think pp adapts to change easely and it seems he can not transform his training

  53. into a practical aspect. He has had quite pretty much a number
training abroad but unfortunately nothing much positive has come out.I’m not disrespecting the big man but just face facts and better our national team. I have had talks with former nation team players and from what they say pp can go beyond his level which he has exihibited at AFCON 2008.We were generally weak in all areas and thank God we are blessed with talent coz the boys were just playing using their skills, experience and very little influence from the coach on the bench. It is up to us to decide wether to go forward or backward with pp.

  54. In spite of the Man of the Match prize awarded to talismanic captain, Christopher Katongo, for his performance in last night’s draw with Egypt in Kumasi, it was a despondent Zambian camp that spoke to the AfriConnect web team this morning. Nevertheless, South Africa-based midfielder, Clifford Mulenga, who had to watch the game from the bench, told AfriConnect today that he thought the draw was a fair result. “The guys played well and created lots of chances, it’s just disappointing we’re going out in the first round. Now we must focus on the World Cup qualifiers. Now we need our supporters to keep faith in the team and we will continue working hard and aim to win something for them very soon

  55. The Zambian team will tomorrow leave their base in Kumasi for their return home after elimination from the 2008 African Cup of Nations. The team will travel to Accra before splitting into two groups: one traveling via Addis Ababa; the other via Johannesburg. Meanwhile, FAZ Delegation Leader, Mr Joseph Nkole, will travel to Lome in Togo – accompanied by Clifford Mulenga and Kalusha Bwalya – to attend the annual CAF Awards Ceremony. During the ceremony it is understood that the Great Kalu’ will be honoured by CAF as one of the 10 best players of the last 50 years of African football.

  56. #123 Derrickble, whatever your name is. I cant keep quite i have every right to speak. We all have opinions and we should respect each other’s opinion.
I am sure Phiri has learnt from this tournament. Firing him will mean starting all over again. This is the mistake we make in Zambia. FAZ should just appoint atleast a technical advisor to boost up the technical bench.

  57. I feel PP deserves to be fired. I have never seen him give instructions to the players in all the three games |Zambia has plyed. A lot of foreign coaches are available, Clemens westerholf should be considered if tachtical and technical aspects of the games are to improve. PP’s record reads very poor indeed. PP’s head is on the chopping board.

  58. #130 Billy SA. You are right. Everyone deserves a chance to express his viws and no one has the powers to you from voicing your thoughts on this blog. Continue writing my brother.

About Chipolopolo, the only positive thing that has come out of this AFCON is the fact that Chipolopolo scored in every much, a clear indiction that our strike force is potent and therefore our efforts should be on improving the quality of our defence and midfield. If we work on these departments our team will once again be a force to reckon with in continental football

  59. #130 Billy SA. You are right. Everyone deserves a chance to express his views and no one has the powers to stop you from voicing your thoughts on this blog. Continue writing my brother.

About Chipolopolo, the only positive thing that has come out of this AFCON is the fact that Chipolopolo scored in every match, a clear indiction that our strike force is potent and therefore our efforts should be on improving the quality of our defence and midfield. If we work on these departments our team will once again be a force to reckon with in continental football

  60. #133,my bro don’t judge a good coach by the comments he makes Clemens westerholf was just anaysis just llike ponga does, why is that guy not wrking. sundowns fired him. yes he won with a great nigeria team( which most coaches would have won with.)have u have seen the liverpool coach or sven standin up and shouting, tht doesn’t help. even if phiri did shout bily was still goin to miss that ball, and HH was still goin to head that ball to JOB. so we jst need the man to go for coaching course, zed shld hire a techincal advisor and pp assistant.

  61. I would like to thank Teddy mulonga for his tenure of office. Please vacate the office and dont offer yourself for re-elecetions because you have nothing else left to offer. May peace be with you.
Ba patrick Phiri, you have served our country a lot of moneyand I am proud of your achievemnet but you are not in the AFCON and World Cup Class to qualify Zambia and win matches at that level. Good bye.
Ba Kalu, mukwate amano nomba Ka. We need serious business now. We have a team butour team lack resources and facilities. We are still amateurs

  62. It is sad that Zambia has not made it to the next round. There is need for serious introspection. If not it will always be the question of “garbage in, garbage out”. Zambia is supposed to be a powerhouse as far as footbal is concerned. But now we have been booted out at the same time as Sudan!!! Definitely something is amiss.

  63. my dear zambian soccer fans, let me make things staright. we have never been a powerhouse in soccer. u should agree with me that we have been a giant killer. a powerhouse wins AFCON, AND QUALIFIES TO THE WORLD CUP. starting from the 70s, 80s, 90s, we have been giant killers tht is why out of 21 meetings with egypt we have won 6, draw 4 and lost 11 times. reached the AFCON finals 2 times, we a southern africa powerhouse not africa. we are like west ham. we are able to beat big teams.

  64. I still insist, sending Patrick for training is just a share waste of resources.Let us try to expose young coaches like Agrey,Happy Sichikolo,Tennat Chilumba and see what they can offer.Let them start at a lower level like U17.Continuity in failure should not be condoned otherwise we will always be talking about getting back to the drawing boards every 2 years as it has being the case since 1996. PP has had his time and it is over now.How many times has been attached to coaching courses? How long has been a coach? What has he archieved at both club and international seen. The man is simply incapable, non adaptive and untrainable.

  65. Balula # 140 Zambia has achieved something considering the infrastructure and the resources. We may not have won the AfCON yet but one day we will get there. We cant compare our selves with South Africa , Egypt, Nigeria or even Angola. We have tried considering the circumstance

  66. BA LULA & Billy you stay too far from Z gents. You see things from a far and consequently make the judgement from that perspective. I pretty much know pp closely from the soccer point of view from a long time. I have been saying over and over the same thing for a long time because I have watched Nkana lose at home due to pp’s blunders.A friend of mine called to tell me that Ellijah Tana is got a story to tell. Wait very soon you will see it in the post.I do not hurt pp.

  67. #141, it looks like you have something personal against Patrick Phiri. There is nothing wrong in sending Patrick phiri ,Aggrey,Happy Sichikolo and the whole crew for training. Patrick Phiri works under extreme conditions with peanuts for pay.We need to be thankful that Mr Phiri has even worked with our team under these terrible conditions. When compared with RSA’s Perreira what PP makes in a year Perrira makes in a month

  68. Mbulawa do you know that Zambia had probably the best preps for AFCON 2008 despite having poor infrastructure? Skill & Tallent matters a lot?Why is South Africa not the best team in Africa?
If we do not compare ourselves to the giants how are we going to improve? If that is the case then let us stop participating and channel our resources towards improving our infrastructure.

  69. All we need are serious people in FAZ. What happened in Ghana is the same old story. Which will be repeated in Angola 2010. I doubt if Z will even qualify for 2010 World Cup. I cam assure that nothing will happen until we have a progressive FAZ. And the govt don’t they visit other countries to see modern stadiums, we ur talking about fixing Konkola Stadium, Zambia please. It must start with new stadia, a serious coach, players in good teams in Europe.

  70. These so called foreign managers keep on jumping from one african national team to another african team. They are in for a kill, its a loot on african resources. Angola have an Angolan coach and they are doing fine. Please give PP a break.

  71. In the whole history,Zambia has no record of ever having the cup.
It is like we will continue using them excuses each tym we kicked out. What CV is Zambia having in this tourna?
From when it started, there have been
    F
    F
    f
what are we longing for?Come 2010 SA,what excuse are we going to use?We need a trainer with sound record.

  72. Zed Z, insele te solution man.I know how to insult better than you but it is not necessary coz we blog in order to find a solution and make a head way for our national team.If you want to have a personal attack on me, I can give you my phone number & E-Mail address. We have had expressed diffent opinions with Billy and Ba lula but we have not insulted!!So tefyo iya man fyo!!

  73. i want to join the westerholf football academy and iwant to know how to contact u people.below is my contact address
email..[[email protected]]phone no..[08056843219 $08072151697]you can contact me through this address.
