Grandstand: Zambia Makes A Respectable Exit

Share

So Zambia shamed the pessimists with the 1-1 draw against Egypt?

I anticipated another massacre but I was wrong.

Zambia at least depart the Africa Cup with a respectable four points but not enough to push them into the quarterfinals after finishing three points behind Cameroon in third place.

They made at least amends for that shambolic 5-1 loss to Cameroon and lucky 3-0 win over inexperienced Sudan in their opening two Group C games.

Against Egypt, Zambia was carried on its shoulders by three players- A feat that even the Greek god Atlas would have found very difficult to do single-handedly back in the day.

Goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene was outstanding in-between the sticks with performances that have been noted by some scouts and agents despite leaking five against Cameroon.

Felix Katongo, despite being a terrible passer of the ball, gave us hope with some midfield entertainment when it was bleak, black and chances of qualifying to the next stage became slim.

And then there was Christopher Katongo.

Zambia tried not to miss him against Sudan by getting the required 3-0 result that became the standard in Group C.

Later, Katongo made his mark and showed us there is life after Collins Mbesuma but also reminded us that there could be life without the Brondby striker in another couple of years should another messiah not be found soon.

Two late goals in two successive games brought back shades of Kalusha without the free-kicks and Katongo will duly be promoted from sergeant when he gets back home by the Zambia Army.

As for the 1-1 score line against Egypt it was a fair, and again, respectable result though it made no difference as Zambia bowed out of the Africa Cup at the group stage for sixth consecutive time.

Meanwhile, there is some hope in defence for Zambia after Kampamba Chintu made his first Africa Cup match after warming the bench on his first and only other trip in 2000.

Chintu has seemingly matured from his edgy defending at Warriors three years ago before moving to South Africa.

Now the question is how long will one of the last survivors from the class of 99 keep his sudden bust of form?

The South African-based player from Free State Stars showed signs of a confident defender when he replaced the injured and workaholic Billy Mwanza in the 33rd minute.

It was another good display from Chintu after I last saw him playing as a defensive midfielder against South Africa in the Cosafa Castle Cup final in Bloemfontein on October 24 last year.

Chintu formed a stable paring with Hichani Himoonde in Zambia’s last 57 minutes although the jury has given the latter a lot of stick in the two Group C games despite being Chipolopolo’s most prospective talent in defence.

However, Joseph Musonda and Clive Hachilensa (Touch wood) through the wings continued to make a sieve impregnable to water from a gashing tap.

And then there is the case of the midfield.

We’ve been through this route before in the last three games with a midfield that lacked any defensive resourcefulness and was guilty of three opposition stampedes in as many games in front of a backline without rivets.

Isaac Chansa needs to dig in a bit more or will continue to warm the bench at Helsingborgs in Sweden.

Is Ian Bakala the best utility midfielder we have? We all doubt that. His time is up.

One of the biggest disappoints was not Jacob Mulenga but the shock of seeing Dube Phiri play two clueless games as a starter and substitute against Sudan and Egypt.

Patrick Phiri got this one very, very wrong and should have given a chance to someone with more spark and adventure like Kabwe Warriors striker Emmanuel Mayuka.

Meanwhile, this edition of the Africa Cup has showed us that the way we play our football has no business at this tournament.

Zambia needs to evolve into a unit to match the power game of the all-conquering performances of the West and North African teams.

We do posses talent with such attributes but it is discriminated against from grassroots.

We have failed to breed the power player in our so-called academies and we will continue to suffer at the ultimate stage because of that.

You will just have to watch the Under-17 team to figure out what kind of player’s are being groomed through the system from the grassroots all the way into the league and onwards.

A lot of hard work lies ahead for those still dreaming of the possibility of better things to come in Angola and South Africa in two years time.

  1. As a realist, I think those who call it respectable to exit at the first stage had a very low ambition. The bottom line is we must aim for success and also make adequate preparations for it. The later did not happen.

  2. Well as said before, we need to go rural areas , get tall players like we used to do in the 1970s getting the simulambos, kapitas etc, then groom them. wee cant ama shorti and expect to win the Africa Cup.

We need to resourceful FAZ adminstration and new partnership with business to build better stadiums. How can have players admiring stadiums rather than marking Samuel Eto.

  3. Well as said before, we need to go rural areas , get tall players like we used to do in the 1970s getting the simulambos, kapitas etc, then groom them. We cant play ama shorti and expect to win the Africa Cup.

We need to be resourceful by having a good FAZ adminstration and new partnership with business that would contribute in building better stadiums. How can we have players admiring stadiums rather than marking Samuel Eto.

  4. Though I am disappointed I feel that, we need to go forward with this team. I was impressed with Chintu, Himoonde, the Katongo brothers, Kalaba, Mweene, Sunzu with the addition of Mbesuma (when back in form), and some players from under 20/23 and a proper coach, we will be a force to reckon with

  5. #3 Football has nothing to do with how tall one is, but understanding and being able to implement a system

  6. All we need is a seasoned coach that is all and of course a FAZ that can raise funds and not govt dependant

  7. Nothing respectable about being bundled out in the group stages. We need to raise the bar and call our outing shambolic period..

  8. I already made my suggestions, go back through the blog to read them. The tournament was over when we lost to Cameroun. I’m glad we had that big pressure game and also rubbed shoulders with Egypt, it’s a rare good test for us, one that has enhanced the need for change. New president, FAZ reform, Foreign coach, ABC teams. We have play more mature football, the defense was obvious, but the offense needs just as much work, same for the midfield. Don’t be fooled.

  9. ZAMBIA MAKES A RESPECTABLE EXIT; So regardless not going to the next stage, as long as we avoid big defeats then we are fine. What ambition – or lack thereof!

  10. Respected exit my foot! Egypt were playing with their foot off the pedal since they had already qualified. The Zambian defence still made plenty of basic errors that would have been punished in a game with more pressure. Its all to do with the coaching. Strategising according to a team’s strength was missing. To make matters worse even the European sounding commentators were amateurs with little knowledge of the History or statistics of the Nations cup. At times they would be busy discussing Ronaldo of Man United or Arsenal for ten minutes yet its Egypt vs Zambia. They made as many errors in their commentary as did our defence.

  11. Kami, i think the guys where much deflated after the big loss, playing Egypt who wanted to slow us down and play at their pace didn’t help either. After the goal and we could not score one goal, it was over. The loss to Cameroon was big, it will take allot to bounce back from that, that’s why it is imperative we need a fresh input and approach that is going to build on what is there. Not because people didn’t do their job i feel.

  12. From Kick Off
Former Zambian pillar of defence Harrison ‘Wawa’ Chongo has advised the Chipolopolo Boys coach Patrick Phiri to retire all the non-performing defenders in his squad.

Chongo said that none of the defenders, including the Golden Arrows’ Billy Mwanza, deserved a place in the national team.

However, he left Abafana Bes’thende defender Joseph Musonda out of his equation.
Chongo was expressing his displeasure at the quality of the defenders following Zambia 5-1 defeat at the hands of Cameroon.

  13. Chongo’s partnership with Elijah Litana was voted the best central defence at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations when Zambia lost 2-1 to Nigeria in the final.

He said the current defenders were not even showing signs of improvement and that the amateurish marking of Zambian defenders in the match against Cameroon left much to be desired.

“Look at those defenders, they were at the last Africa Cup and now they make such mistakes, you can’t allow it,” he said.

Chongo observed that Zambian defenders Clive Hachilensa, Kennedy Nketani and Mwanza and Musonda wanted to outmark Barcelona star Samuel Eto’o in last Saturday’s match, but that they were shaky and were caught napping.

  14. Chongo said it was time to change the entire defence as Zambia prepares for 2010 World Cup qualifiers kicking off at the end of May.

“Apart from Musonda, the rest of the defence should go. How can one defender miss the ball when going for the header, and then the other one fails to clear.”

  15. I agree with Zed Analyst, Zambia should go rural, get taller untapped talent and start working with them. We will still have same issues to deal with in crucial encounters where we will be outclassed in free kicks, corner kicks or dangerous goal encounters with world class strikers. It is time we did our homework. Let us learn from our mistakes and rectify them. Also let us build at least 4 new stadia, please!!! If you invest in football you will get required results.

  16. CK and Zed Analsyt, you got your figures wrong. Its not height that determines how good a player can be but skill.Zola formerly of Chelsea was small in stature but would game-in game out give the taller defenders hell. Our own J Bwalya was short and would jump higher that the average tall guys.C’mon lets have it right in here.Zed needs a serious look at its soccer if we intend going places.

  17. Hi Zambia!

I have nothing to say! We have been talking about this subject for the last many weeks!

I find most of the suggestions put accros sound… My only concern is: How will we ensure that our suggestions are implemented?

We need to find a strong channel through which to communicate our ideas to the powers that be!

Least we turn this wonderfull forum into talk shop!

  18. brothers from zambia! i suggest the best way is to maintain the same team. FEED THEM PROPERLY AND NURTURE THEM KALUSHWA CAN HELP. TEACHER THEM HOW TO MAKE PRIOTIES WELL. WHICH ONE COMES FIRST AT LAST……….BEER, WOMEN, MARIJUANA, CAREER

  19. Thats a good comment from Abdul. Its amazing how you can change a team’s fortunes with the proper coaching, training, psychology and nutrition. Zambia tends to fade in matches and have lapses in concentration. The best professionals are able to focus completely for 90 minutes. Maybe keep Phiri and the local coaches but bring in a Technical Advisor, charged with improving football standards up from grassroots to national teams.

  20. Let not politics interfere with football, the national soccer team is not the sports minister’s private property, and chase those lazy chaps in FAZ.

  21. With Kalusha’s links to KNVB in Holland, perhaps hiring a Dutch Technical Director to oversee development across the nation.

  22. ZAMBIA LANDS TODAY, WHO IS COMING WITH ME TO THE RIOT?
I AM DOINGG THIS IN THE INTEREST OF TAXPAYERS MONEY> THE GOVERNMENT COULDNT SPONSOR OUR TRIP TO THE MODEL UNITED NATIONS, BUT THEY HAVE MONEY FOR EMBARASSMENT. BANYA, BAZACHOKA CHIBE CHA PA MPUNO. TWA KALIPA, TWA KALIPA.

  23. BROTHER THERE IS NO NEED TO RIOT. JUST BE YOURSELF THERE IS ALOT OF THINGS TO SAY ABOUT THE ZAMBIAN/SUDANESE TEAM AND YOU ARE PART OF THAT. JUST COME DOWN AND ENJOY YOUR ILLICT BEER

  24. Patrick Phiri did well considering the circumstances. FAZ should keep him for 2010. An expatriate coach could be employed as PP’s assistant. We want a Zambian solution to a Zambian soccer problem. What have these foreign coaches achieved in Zambia? Let us not disturb PP, he is the right man for the job at the moment so lets do with what we have.

  25. Now it is a respectable exit. Whatever. We need to address Z football seriously. All stake holders should be checked, probed and chastised. These are FAZ, the Gov as sponsor, players, technical team and supporters alike. With an exception of the last one the other groups must be questioned. How do the technical team make a team? FAZ with its bickerings can they perform better? Gov as sponsor are they up to date or just give out threats? Is the technical team reaaly technical, trained for the modern sport? One should look at that and and brain storm the issue. We should hold these four groups accountable. The next level will be effective once this is done. Let`s start from that. AUDIT needed.

  26. 4 real its a respectable exit.Maintain team replace coach & FAZ.Man cant read the game.We played well in all the 3 games despite the defence gifting Cameroun 5 goals.
WAWA shud jst shut up & dig some copper @ Mopani Mines.Well done Zambia proud of u.See u @ the Airport today

  27. We were just not good enough even if you employed alex Fergerson, Arsene Wenger, we would just just play better with the same result. These guys are still young, lets continue with them and the technical staff.Lets train our coaches thats where the benefits will come. This diet rubbish from the sudanese chap is impracticle. So rich an advice from sudan. This team, countrymen & women is work in progress. With good planning, come 2010, mbesuma will b back and maybe two new inclusions we can make an impression.Winning is far fetched now just a mere over-reaction of patriotism. And riot guys who/what are rioting for?

  28. I don’t know maybe some of guys are short. I am not saying short players can not play football but in defence you need tall men. Look at Man U or any other serious team, the have tall guys at the back yes we had Johnstone, John Kalusa but the entire was not short guys look at the guys that died in Gabon, the 1994 team and 1996, those guys were above average in height. No wonder the Zambian defence head to their own goal, Litana and Wawa would never do that. The Zambian U-20 in Canada had the smallest (in size) players and those are the guys who will come to the senior team, so unless we make a delibarate move, we never win the Africa CUP.

  29. The players, the defenders are to blame for their own exist.the strikers were not agressive enough, only Cris Katongo was. If I am to choose the best players that represented zambia at Afcon, it woud have to be Chris and his brother Felix, Mweene and joseph Musonda, the rest are crap. I hope Mbesuma comes in quickly, we mis you. Jacob Mulenga should be dropped, so should Dube Phiri and the entire defence that gifted Cameroun with goals.

  30. the coach hould encourage his players to play possesional football. In all the three matches that Zambia played, the team was outplyed in ball posseion.

  31. why should sports minister be disappointed with the Zambia’s poor performance in Ghana? These guys are not even ashemed of themselves, the govt is not commited to foodball. you can not expect good results to come when the preps period where very short, and very poor. we need alot of commited leaders, planners, and implimentors of football programmes.

It is shameful for Phiri to wait for the dust to settle, when you’ve failed swallow the pride, and take the blem. Yuo did no do the good job full stop.If you have ears you should taken free advice given to you, especiall about Tana, if l where you, l’ll resign soon after the white wash 5-1 defeat.

  32. #5 Football does have something 2 do with height, especially in defence. Many teams play wing football and dip crosses into the 18 yard box.In this situation short defenders will definately be disadvantaged. In addition defenders have to deal with corners & other set pieces. While short players are also talented its essentail to have at least 75% of defenders tall & not the opposite. Most teams with fewer talented players invest heavily in perfecting corners & set pieces to get results.

  33. Shwala, a agree with what you are saying. But I wonder why people are saying Jacob Mulenga did not perform, I thought he was one of the best players we had in Ghana. What was he expected to do? The boy has a bright future and it was the first time at the nations cup. Chamanga, the Katongos were their for the second time so they had some experience. I will not be surprised if Jacob ends up at a big team in Europe. Mbesuma, I don’t know what has happened to him. I remember the Kaiser Chiefs coach saying he was sold too soon to Europe, I think he was right.

  34. Muntuza #21 I never saw Johnson Bwalya score a header.I am not suggesting that all short players must be excluded, but that the majourity playing must be tall.Which team at Afcom has many short players & progressed to the quaters or which European club in the 5 majour leugs has won there domestic or champions league recently with many short players?Non of them. You can have at least 2 short players on the field but not 5 or 6.

  35. Guys lets not cry foul its already late. We should start afresh. We were not the only ones. Imagine two BIG TEAMS (SA and Senegal) performed badly and never won a single game. Football is extremely dynamic and as such we should come up with a better strategy so that we create a pool of players to be used in future international events. Lets tap the entire Zambian landscape. Its also high time that social responsibility became party of the new investors in Zambia. Remember RCM, NCCM and ZCCM? They invested in social welfare and produced stars such as Kalu, Patrick Musonda, the Simunyolas etc

  36. Muntuza is always blogging, ngala bomba he will be fired very soon, just go through the past postings and you will agree with me,as Zedians where ever we are work should come first and then ifya shala pa last.

  37. Chikumbuso #35 you must be dreaming. Phiri had his chance. (Ok may be he has improved since this time he has done better than when he got us knocked out in the qualifiers by Benin of all teams!!) Zambian coaches have had their chance and they have failed to do better than Buselic and Porterfield and Poulsen so we should go back to these foreigners and bring them in to learn how they do it. Thats what clever people do. Ask the Japanese. We dont want to be going to these finals for heartbreaks but for the joys of victory!!! So Undertaker forget the other big teams and their losses. They have already had their glory!! -which we haven’t had.

  38. Shidada, I agree with u.Jacobs performance was okay espcially for a first timer. But all defenders excerpt Billy in the first 2 games played poorly in both, more especially that this was there second appearance at the show piece..

  39. hey zed fans don’t worry we go to the world cup. we have a great tym. iam telling next AFCON and world cup qualifies, teams like south africa, zambia, angola, benin, we do well. if u anaysis most “big” teams are fading, look how the 2002 senegal has become? cameroon is next, ghana won’t be so good, egypt has a good production line, they we still there. but my boys are young and we do better. NO NEED TO DESTORY THE TEAM.PILZ ZED GUYS

  40. Zambian soccer sux! For as long the game is left for kaponyaz and school drop-outs nothing good will ever be reaped from the K5.8 billion invested football. Teach those chaps basics of life, like having priorities, and goals in life. They should understand that its not all about money but national pride and having a sense of responsibility.

Before this era of kaponyaz, we had the likes of Kalu, Chali Ku, Wiz, Jonstone, Peter Kaumba, all not very educated but had the basic knowledge of life. Not these Chibuku mongers. Soccer should be played, like any other game, not because you failed school but because you have the talent and are disciplined.

    [email protected]

  41. #52 The is a very bad accusation my brother, most of my zambian players have finished school, atleast grade 12, maybe didn’t do well maybe because the used to play school at the clubs. for example, mweene was at kanseshi secondary in ndola finished grade 12, jacob mulenga was at lechwe in kitwe(say lechwe he comes from a well to do famliy, i don’t think even that 9.7 mil faz gave was a surprise to him. katonga brothers finished school that is why the are in zed army.it is just a think these in zambia to think that guys havn’t gone to school. rooney is just right his GCEs, no talks bad about that boy, ronaldo, eto’o and many other chaps.

  42. It is unfortunately typical of Zambians to invest little in the team and yet expect to reap massive rewards. The fact is this team performed as well as it could. One would hope that our players have learnt a valuable lesson against some of the best teams in Africa. Getting rid of the players now will be like the proverbial throwing out the baby with the bath water. The experience the players have gained will stand them in good stead for 2010. But watch FAZ mess things up even further!!!!

  43. i don’t think education is a issue when it comes to soccer, look at tht great zambian team, Chabala( was not a grade 12), chali cool, dropped in grade 10, but one most of the best midfleid in africa(maybe even a better player than kalu). derby, wisdom, most dropped from skool but were great players. just encourage the boys, don’t call them kaponyaz. wat more we had a kaponya is the state house why can’t we have one in the chipolopolo.

  44. Now thats zed talking! Every time we lose people talk, win they still talk, draw even worse. we all knew zambia had very slim (or zero) chances of making it to the next round.

  45. My worry is that in the aftermath of such an early exit, we have a lot of people over reacting. We need an objective post mortem of our performance. Then we must come up with a programme to address our weaknesses. This is how we can turn this negative situation into something positive. When you look at the team, the essential ingredients are already there. Now they know what it means to face teams with World class stars. Let them learn from that experience. Do just go to a wholesome change of the team and employing a foreign coach. Use that money to develop the team. Let them get friendlies with Nigeria, Tunisia, Angola, Ivory Coast. That’s how you develop a team!

  46. Am back. Well, may be school isnt neccesary but we need people who look at the game with a sense of responsibity. Your players dont realize that things they do outside the training grounds affects their performance, something that is common sense that seems not to be so common among the players, no wonder they drink like bars will ever run out beer.

Just because you’ve made mistakes in past, like appointing a kaponya to be president does not mean you should have more of them in national duties.

Its ignorance that makes them rattle their knees against each other upon hearing certain names such as Eto, Job, Dosantos etc. Kalu is a living example of what am talking about.

  47. I imagine what would happen in 2010 if a miracle happened that your jokers qualified, and your defenders come face to face with the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney, Mesi, Kaka, Ibrahimovic, Robinho, Van Persie, Sesc, I bet they’d pee in their pants if not the worst because to them what those stars have done is not achievable.

I imagine what would happen if we sent all life failures to play chess at the all Africa games in 2011.

  48. JKM, these guys camped in Europe played against Spanish select sides and Tunisia and Morocco in Africa, what other world class players do they need to play against.

I wish I was from Angola, their country is only recovering from a long civil war, yet see how good they are doing. The answer is to get people with the right attitude and mentality. Of course there are a few exceptions like Chris, and Kennedy.

  49. Guys! That was the best Zambia could taking into consideration that soccer standards have been falling pa Zed since 1994. Apart from Power dynamos, what zambian team( with the exception of Mighty in 1963) has one any African tournament? We need to build from this experience, start pumping money into youth soccer, modern infrastructure, get our local coaches trained at internationally renowned coaching institutions and get the right people to run FAZ. Plus make the local league attractive with good incentives and lastly kick politics out of football. I personnally feel we do have the potential that can be properly nurtured if we do things right!!

  50. The Don, u are refering to zambian team us my team. are u zambian? if u want to be Angolan no problem u can surrend our passport cross over. this is for zambians how share a passion in our team and we disscuss how we can improve our beloved team.so if u are fade up with our beloved chipolopolo well ad good, lets some of us with endless faith and hope remaining zambians.we have a great team and i have faith we one day win.

  51. We always lose our game from the technical point of view. Our technical bench has been very poor as a matter of fact, even during the last qualifier against SA, it was once again exposed. We wud have lost the game in the second half. The 5-1 bashing in the hands of Cameroon, I expected the couch to sacrifice a midfielder for a striker coz we had nothing to lose after the indomitable went up by 3goals. But instead we saw our own Phiri bringing in a midfielder for another midfielder with Zero resultant. We must overhaul the technical bench. Also at FAZ lets have Kalusha lead FAZ, in my opinion he has wat it takes not because he was succeful as a player ( which is ofcourse a plus) but……….

  52. Kalusha has been sitting on the fifa technical committe for many years and I think they keep on appointing him because he delivers. Lets give the yougman chance to lift the football stands of Zambia. I know a lot of pipo are personal about Kalu coz they dont like his ambitiuos nature. Kalu is a very positive looking person, never afraid of failure and no wonder he was successful even as a player.

Solution to our football problems lies in have a visionary FAZ boss with a lot of command in the football world. Lets not be cheated, succeful PIPO in the administration of football world over are those with passion for the game like our own GREAT KALU.

  53. Ya right, am fade up. Actually got fade up with your rubber bullets some time back. My concern is how much resources you keep on wasting and never getting anything back. As a matter of fact even if I became Angolan, I would still pay the huge tax am subjected while staying in Zambia. Instead of using that money on poverty reduction, you end up sending kaponyaz to shame you in front of everyone. There are footballing nations and soccer loving nations, which one is Zambia? Ba Lula, thats 4 u!

  54. Kando with all due respect Kalu has done a lot for Zambia but I do not think he can solve all of Zambia’s football woes. We need a pragmatic approach to the problem, get local coaches trained in modern technics, develop youth soccer, build proper infustructure. We need a team inclusive of Kalu which will have have a credible blueprint for Zambian soccer and ensure that it is followed and implemented. Here is a bit of history. Zambia beat Nigeria in 1973 4 – 1 at Dag in Ndola. The Nigerians were so impressed with Zambia’s system at that time. Mind you we had Zambia Schools where the Willie Phiris, Bernard Chandas came from. They studied it and implemented it. The rest is history!! I end here

  55. Guys we have a good team except the defense which was bad and the midfield which lucked a defensive Midfield. The technical team on the bench is were we lost it.One can not expect to go through after loosing 5-1 in your second game.Even South Africa who have a weaker team than Zed can’t lose 5-1 let alone Sudan did not concede 5 goals. We have a coach who did well to qualify us but at the Nations Cup it was another level. There you need a coach that is highly technical, disciplined and can read the game very well.A guy that is not afraid to sacrifice senior players when the are not playing well.
People were mourning about the defense from last year where the defenders were bumping into the

  56. goalkeeper. All P.P said is we have a problem at the back we will rectify everything as we go into the Nations Cup.
Was the problem sorted? I need an answer from those guys saying that the coach should remain in charge.Look at C.Kampamba who came as a result of injury and H.H.Why didn’t the coach try those guys earlier. He had no guts to try those boys.
Why didn’t he play with a defensive Midfielder through out when he knew the defense had problems.Chintu or F.Kasonde would have played in this position.
Why did he play didn’t he play Sunzu against Egypt but he chose to bring in A.Phiri.C.Mulenga and Mayuka should have been given exposure also. These are the boys to carry us into the future

  57. For me i have so many questions to ask.The E.Tana story is another question.P.P can assist a good Expatriate Coach, we can’t just let him go like that.He knows most of these boys.

  58. Typical zambian rhetoric, why do you want to decorate failuer, under achievement and mediocrity with flowery language? what is so ‘respectable’ about being bundled out in the first round which included a 5-1 thumping?

  59. Zambian soccer is rubbish talk. You’ll talk all you want, come 2010 the same things that had just happened will happen again. Wonder why such sport as basket ball is not given K5.8 billions when they do so well internationally. All you flowering such a poor showing think through and be realistic.

Zambia? African champions? Not with those clowns and jokers for your defenders.

  60. Don,that is a good question? hahaha, we are a soccer loving nation. i can’t say we are a footballing nation. we have never won anything.

  61. Actually give all the money to the Esther boxer girl, she has at least won something – I would think that would be a better bet on tax payer investment

  62. Geographically Zed has a big opportunity to benefit from Angola & SA in the coming years. Fix the stadiums well, invite other coutries to come and prepare in beautiful Zambia this time. Cam, Nigeria and Zambia all trained in spain, it’s good but i wonder why they were there, because it was so much colder than Ghana. If we countries are going to come and train in Zambia before these two big tournaments, provided we qualify, it means we shouldn’t have problems with friendlies. Just as well really…. Anyway, pick yourself up Zambia, let’s play hard ball!!!!!!!!

  63. #30-natukalipa but going to riot is not the solution.its all about proper investing and management of our soccer affairs.I only wish these people running football affairs could pick something from the zedian bloggers

  64. But maguys muli bafiloto elyo bamo tabapepabwino fwaka yabo. Firstly an expatriate coach picked Zambia from the ashes and reached in the finals in 1994. Then looking at the other years Zambia has done better it has been with the expatriate coaches. Now you have had PP for some time now what has he achieved? Wake up sto dreaming and face reality. Engage an expatriate coach who will not be intimidated by politicians in FAZ. Change FAZ to include pipo with foresight only then will things change for the better. If not careful u will just be going in the same circle.

  65. And so ladiez and gentelemen. After all thez successive bowing outz that we hav successifully managed for a couple of yrs now,wat really iz drawn when they say “going bak to the drawing board” how many tymz??

  66. By the way am NOT for Kalu being the FAZ presdo!!!!!!!!!!He oredy has enough to do.Wat we need is committed executive memberz……

  67. Most of the Zambian footballers are dull to say the least. Even where you expect them to advance with the ball, they stop and look backwards thereby giving opponents chance to regroup and defend better. it appears the strategy was to start slowly and then increase tempo in second half but we were already three goals down in the Cameroun game at that time. Players seem not to be fit and want to dribble when it is not necessary. The midfield was dead too. Ian Bakala was useless, I could see him walking when his defence was in trouble and was losing balls. Felix Katongo was above average. I could not tell whether Chris Katongo was playing as a striker or midfielder.

  68. CAF Champions League winners Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia won Club of the Year. Etoile striker Armine Chermiti was named the Best African Club Competition Player and Zambian Clifford Mulenga claimed Young African Player of the Year.(KICKOFF.COM)

Congrats Mulenga you are on the CAF Books.Histroy and Legacy for Zambia.

  69. #66 Zambia beat Nigeria 5-1 not 4-1. Iam sure Soccer Fan no2 can rightthis result. And the man who never saw Johnson score a header never watched Mighty. In fact most bloggers here seem to be veryyoung they dontremember the glory days of Zambia.Thatswhy they praise a coasch for a first round exit. But Im 1000pecent behind soccerfan no 2 we need an expatriate coach.wewant to live again in the glory of the 70s 80s and 90s

  70. I just forget that we failed to beat RSA in the cosafa but we blew our trumpets about bringing the africa cup when they is zero investmment in the soccer apart from the cosmestic KCM league, which is really a scandal in the making.

How do you invest K 5.8 billion whose change will be plundered despite the early exit. Lets invest long term like ZCCM did and the fruits will be seen long term. Our only consolation is that we atleast have a youth reservior to tap from. God forbid if our U 20 and U 23 were not producing our current boys.

  71. Ba Lula, I knew what your answer would be. So then stop crying as if Zambia is the best at it! Lets be level headed and face the facts boldly. We are not what we dream to be, otherwise we would not be dreaming.

Lets support other sports, but not Esther, because very soon she’ll be given a pounder to send her to the grave. You know how the bazungus operate. I hope you remember what happened to Paul Bwalya, i.e. pounded to death in front of every Zambian and there came the malaria and zigolo and amabuns stories.

Lets take sport that is less likely to cause fatalities, like bouncing the ball on a court and aiming at a ring on a board to score. Its commonly called basket ball.

  72. Felix Katongo is going to Rennes on a two year contract according to Daily Mail, do guys know more and other players?

  73. Felix Katongo to play in France
Zambia and Angola based midfielder Felix Katongo has clinched a two and a half year contract with top French first division side Stade Rennaise F.C.

This follows his impressive performance at the on-going Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Katongo told ZNBC’s Franklyn Tembo that he will be joining the team at the start of the French league season this year.

  74. ZAMBIA national soccer team midfielder Felix Katongo has expressed delight with his latest move to French side Rennes.

In an interview, Katongo said the development was a boost to his footballing career.
Arguably Zambia’s best performer at the African Cup of Nations in Ghana, Katongo is hoping to make an impact in France.
“I want to perform wonders in the first year I will be at Rennes,” a delighted Katongo said.

“I feel happy that I will be moving to Europe because I have been working hard even in Angola.”

The former Petro Athletico player who played for Forest Rangers and Green Buffaloes in Zambia before heading to South Africa for a short stint at Jomo Cosmos is expected to lea

  75. I get very happy when I see Zambian players going into decent European leagues like the French league. The boy will be rubbing shoulders with the Silvan Wiltord of this world. I hope the Lad (Felix) will develop very quickly unlike Ba Jacob Mulenga who somehow seems to be moving at a snails’s pace.

  76. #98 You are just Indian and not Zambian. Just yesterday you said you hated Zambia. Why are you then Zambia. Just get out of our beloved country and go back to your dirty country India. Leave us Africans alone. What has Angola done young a.s.s? Do you play soccer in India? Indians are the weakest people on earth.

  77. # 69 sibs . We need an accomplished coach. Expatriate or not. We fail to make that distinction in Zambia,we automatically think “zambian is inferior”. WHY?
    Posiible coaches:
    Wedson Nyirenda
    George Lwandamina

    # 70 amabosses. Follow the South African press. Despite a first-round exit, they have taken a lot of positives from the experience. They are team-building, they have vision for the coming years. They are identifying their strengths. Parreira has strongly defended his teams performance and has never blasted their performance. We should do likewise. Lets use the tourney to build a team for AFCON 2010

  78. [contd] But criticism is absolutely necessary. Let’s make it constructive. The team needs to get up and dust themselves off and continue. We have made progress from last few AFCON, I believe the last time we had a three-goal victory was in ’98 against Mozambique.

  79. We are newbie within this element, I hope all of you will help me personally to get additional details inside the following
