Chinese-Zambians in ‘fists of fury’

Share

Zambian and Chinese workers at the Chambishi Copper Smelter fought running battles at the construction site of the new smelter.

Two Zambian workers and one Chinese worker were injured in the fight that began around 07:30hours - Tuesday morning.

A ZNBC news found angry Zambian workers outside the plant armed with stones and chanting anti Chinese slogans.

The Zambian workers at the company are demanding improved conditions of service.

Company Secretary, Sun Chuanqi explained that the Zambian workers reported for work but decided to stay outside the plant where they started making noise.

Mr. Sun said the workers later started throwing stones causing extensive damage to windows in the kitchen and sleeping quarters and also destroyed the Multi choice dish.

He said it was at this point that the Chinese workers moved in to try and stop the Zambians from causing further damage.

Riot police were called in to quell the situation.

National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) Branch Secretary, Steven Kabwe described the situation at the plant as serious.

Mr. Kabwe said the Chinese workers were armed with stones, sticks and knives.

  1. Catchy title ati “Chinese – Zambians in fists of fury”. I guess the people of chambeshi need to “enter the dragon” and practice the “36 steps of kungfu” and perhaps talk to the “drunken master” and send him back to the “Shaolin Temple” for consultations of how to do business in Zambia!

  2. WHY IS IT THAT CHINESE INVESTORS ARE ALWAYS BEING REPORTED DOING BAD THINGS? I THINK THEY SHOULD ONLY BE GIVEN CHANCE TO INVEST IN JUDO OR KARATE GAMES.

SHAME SHAME.THIS IS NOT THE TYPE OF INVESTORS WE WANT, THESE ARE CHINESE ARE INFESTERS NOT INVESTORS. THEY WERE FOUND ARMED WITH A KNIVES, STONES AND STICK ATTEMPTING TO KILL THEIR PARTNERS IN DEVELOPMENT, SHAME TO THE GVT OF TODAY FOR ALLOWING THIS TO GO ON.

THESE INFESTES SHOULD GO BACK AND DO THOSE PRACTISES IN CHINA NOT IN ZAMBIA.

GOD FORGIVE US FOR OUR WRONG VOTING, & ALLOW ONLY INVESTORS NOT INFESTERS IN OUR BELOVED ZAMBIA, TWAPAPATA MWE LEAS, AMEN.

  3. Nice observation Anonymous..Reminded me of the old Plaza two days. But on a serious note though, our government needs to bring sanity to the way these chinese conduct themslves in our country.Zambians are not asking for anything fancy but simply want a decent & wage humane treatment. Is our government so consumed on seeking this foreign investment that they are willing to risk the lives of Zambians to get it. This has got to come to an end. China has over a billion people and majority of these so called expartriates are cannot find work in China and thats how they end up in places like Zambia. The minister of labour needs to resign on moral grounds for failing to protect Zambian workers

  4. China has changed Zambia. The economy in Zambia has grown and improved due to demand in copper. Our mines were closing down until the Chinese came in.

Zambians, think again. There is food on the table these days!
Inflation has dropped thanks to the Chinese.

  5. Zambian just like to fight. No that there an opportuntiy to work, the kick the boss.

Sheer laziness. You find today in Zambia, grown men raping children and they blame it on the poor chinese.

Develop your country and stop distroying property.

yes, let the chinese go and invest somewhere else, we do not deserve the investment in Zambia.

Our strong men want to sit at home and rape babies

  6. Truth of the matter is that world metal prices are cyclical and it’s not what the Chinese did that changed that. Anglo American is kicking themselves in the rear for leaving Zambian when the just before that up turn so this mess about the Chinese developing Zambia is misplaced. Anybody including ZCCM could have been profitable in the current market. The Chinese just got in at the right time and they shuld be thanking us for giving them the mines for virtually nothing. They owe us and not the other way round. Try rasing a family on less than $100/month before calling other people lazy

  7. Well I told you people earlier about these investors! Thats what happens when the government dosen’t listen to the people’s demands. We’ve been talking about it and nothing was happening, maybe now they will listen but is it has to be like this for them to listen and act to our cry?

I thought Mwanawasa’s government was a listening gvt! but am very dissapointed. This is a wake up call!Act on issues we raise e.g Spirit of the River a Canadian mine company poluting zambezi river in Western province and othe mine in maamba.

  8. our chun chwi comrades historically have poor safety records.this story is also on the BBC news website!!i have said this before..we need to enact/update legislation that refers to mining safety.as for poor wages ..in the absence of a minimum wage we are at the mercy of any “infestor” and indeed ourselves!! Bwana Miles…that was you i used to see always at Plaza 2??

  9. After they closed down Palace in Kamwala, I had no option but to step up my game and head out to Plaza 2. Keep it coming Pundit, we miss the good old days.

  10. Palace was the one!!!i got to admire Lu Tung Chung and Bi Yu Chings’ incredible fighting styles!!I often watched with envy the re-enactments that often took place on the street after the movie!!the running commentaries were an absolute delight!!Now that i’m learning Mandarin i’m getting to appreciate some of the movies still on show!!

  11. Those Zambian workers must be mad. How do you throw rocks at the hand that feeds you. If they have a grievance, they must demonstrate it using the book.
But again, maybe they’ve watched too many Kung fu movies and wanted some action…since its month end they must have come drunk or something…lol

  12. #11,the grievance procedure takes so long in zambia a re-enactment of “Fists of Fury” tends to result a response far quicker!!

  13. Xenophobic Oh my God, zambia for Zambian. Guys lets get thing together. The ministry of workers and supply must come in and sort this issue. They must be a minimum wage set. In my opinion i think throw stones shows how unreasonable some workers are. Let there unoin represent there problems. Do you want Zambia to be dented like other from east Africa? I hope those guys throwin natural missile were nt sent my fake politician. Bashi mine learn to solve things interlectually

  14. The problem is not the Chinese but our own government. You get a minister weeping at the poor conditions the Chinese are offering to the Zambians, or “better” still behaving like PROs for the investors. As for the “labour” officers, well they hang up their gloves a long time ago and work permits are as easy to get as a newspaper if you are Chinese or Indian.Zambia has really got a “favourable” investment climate.

  15. Iwe chi Kangwawhatever the rest of it is, the reason why we miners are taking the law into our own hands is because there is no law to protect us. The law is there to protect Levy onily and allow these folinhaz to abuse us left right and centre. It is no coincidence that there is another riot at a mine run by Chinese pepos in Southern province.

Zambians, please remember that the rising standards of living are due to miners like me who risk our lives for fima ‘so of us’ like Kangwa***** #13 above. Please don’t take us for granted.

  16. I thought sata told us,or maybe I just had it in my dreams. We are going nowhere, though him too is nothin but some old nuts trying to make a living .The problem is with our government, and all we see are the fruits of the present government. The chinese have no problem at all, they are just captalising on our rotten systems, driven by the blind masses who think politics is a way of making a living, bullshit!.

  17. #15 Thanx for your comment/s, but what i can tell you is that takin the law in your own hands will have a negative impact on your life if the some law visits you personally. I understand your anger. By the way you are doin nothin to improve my life. If you are so inteligent check my IP address and will tell you where i’m located. Ya im an *****!!!!!!. Just a clue for you #15 google MPI

  18. ba kangwasenuka you tell me you are part of the Human Connections to the Meeting Industry’s Largest Global Community. How come I dont know you

  19. If it were the British or Americans, or even South Africans in chambishi (i bet same circumstances)you (Zambians) would not be doing anything like this, if not glorifying them, double standards!!!!! Why do you have a dislike for us (ba choncholi!)Why?? Why??

  20. Ladies and Gentlemen, probably the best way to analyse the whole scenario is to look at China’s conditions of service. On average they are poor, discrimination is very high..anyone ever head of Chinese slavery?? That country is developing based on power remuneration to employees and their culture of housing poll. If the gvt cared they should have educated our partners on the Zambian Culture of business conduct. Why is there no strikes at Lumwana, Mopani and Mbwana Mukubwa? A decent wage for a Zambian is what we want. We know what they themselves earn and declare to gvt. How can one chinese junior officer get $10000 when me who does the job and more qualified and experienced get $1,000 gross?

  21. The MMD gov’t is there to “create” a good arena for anybody to come and abuse our people and steal the resources of Zambia. There idea of development is for the people of Zambia to be thankful for the abuse we get from foreign investors not just the chinese. People are insulted and abused by foreign tour operator and lodge owners, our people are abused and underpaid by foreign white commercial farmers. So the issue is not the chinese, they chinese have found a rotten systems just like the tour operators and the white farmers have. In my opinion, the gov’t needs to put up laws that ensures that no one abuses our people.

  22. I have never been an advocate for violence but it seems to be the only language our governmnet listens to. Workers have been crying about these conditions for years but to no avail. A classic example is Nitrogen chemicals where people have gone for months without salaries.Let our ministers go for a month without a salary and then see if they will speak the same language. Asking for a decent wage is not a crime and our miners have been pushed into a corner and the one source of redemption in the name of GRZ has abandoned them. #15 I work in the Mining Industry and know what miners around the world make..Your struggle is genuine.Pundit,This is a looks like a Bruce Lee the Big boss re-enactment

  23. Zambians are peace loving people and the simple message they are sending to our gogernment is that they want to be treated as humans.. Our government needs to protect their ridiculously taxed citizens from predatory imperialists like these. If throwing stones is what it’s going to take to get it done, then we have to do it, heck, this is how Independence was won from the british.. We are tired of this nonsence

  24. The problem we have is that there is no accountability in Zambian politics. If the same issue was happening in Europe, the minister in charge of labour should have either been sacked or the person will stepdown and get replaced by someone who can handle the job and meet the expectations of the people of Zambia. If fact, they President should be stepping down for lack of good leadership performance. But in Zambia we don’t use public pressure to move things. Isn’t the deputy labour minister Austin Liato the president’s son in law? It is clear that the labour ministry is doing nothing but can he and the labour minister get the sack, I don’t think so!!

  25. #15 you dont get a pay rise by throwing stones and beating the hell out of each other! There are other avenues of expressing your grievances. If you end up killing a man you will be singing about your problems on your way to Mukobeko!

  26. #19. We do not hate the Chinese, we just dont agree with their way of doing business. Ask the South African tour operators that came in with this type of mentality..they faced the same type of treatment. I would not expect the British and Amenricans to do something like this cause there societies have evolved quite a bit to where they respect the rule of law a little better than the chinese. We can all win in this but it starts with the Chinese respecting our laws and our people.

  27. Workers, continue to sort out these very stupid employers.if this is the only way that they learn.infact we can stat killin them one by one.before the tenth one dies, all chinese employes wil repent.abash mental slavery ìn our own country. Workers, continue to sort out these very stupid employers.if this is the only way that they learn.infact we can stat killin them one by one.before the tenth one dies, all chinese employes wil repent.abash mental slavery ìn our own country.

  28. Zambia, China to sign free zone deal

    By Haggai Chilabi

LUSAKA, March 4 (Reuters) – Fifty Chinese companies plan to invest over $800 million in a tax free zone in Zambia within the next five years under an agreement to be signed shortly, Zambia’s trade and commerce minister said on Tuesday.

Felix Mutati said the southern African country and China would sign an investment deal to allow foreign companies, mainly from China, to start construction at the Multifacility Economic Zone (MFEZ) in the Copper Belt town of Chambishi, 420 km (260 miles) north of Lusaka.

Negotiations between Zambia and Chinese authorities were currently under way and an agreement

  29. “We are looking for a cocktail of companies that will add value to our raw materials to use the Chambishi zone. China is helping to attract other foreign companies on our behalf.”

Preliminary data provided by China indicated that the Chambishi zone would generate in excess of $900 million per year in turnover by firms that would invest in the processing of copper into finished products.

Zambian officials have not given details on which Chinese companies would invest in the zone but China Non-Ferrous Metals (Group) Co Ltd. is one of them.

China has drawn fire from Western nations and aid groups, who accuse Beijing of turning a blind eye to misrule, corruption and human rights abuses.

  30. Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa has vowed to fight political opponents who try to limit or frustrate Chinese investments in the mineral-rich southern African nation.

The growing presence of Chinese firms in Zambia has prompted an anti-Chinese backlash in some parts of the country, with the main opposition party accusing Mwanawasa of allowing the Asian newcomers to exploit workers.

Workers at Zambia’s Chinese-owned Chambishi Smelter rioted over pay on Tuesday, injuring a Chinese manager and damaging property as a wage dispute entered a second day, a union official said.

Mutati said the Chambishi zone, which should be fully functional within five years, would initially create 6,000 jobs an

  31. I think you Zambians just talk too much and don’t appreciate what the “CHINESE” have done for the country. It is clear that you Zambians no nothing about development. Some of you accountants, doctors, computer technicians so clearly you know nothing about Economics. I think you should stay away from state affairs and let the gov’t do its job because its clear you know nothing about Economics. Before the chinese came some of you where waiting for world vision to drop some bags of maize so you can eat something so appreciate that the Chinese have given you jobs. Which one of you would have come up with a Billion dollars to invest in a mine??? Non of you, not even the gov’t that you condemn…

  32. [cont…]
so much. Mwanawasa has shown the difference between an educated leader and a bus driver reject. He is doing a good job, better than anything the other presidents have done. Some of you never even knew how a bowling alley looked like but because of LPM you can now go to one so you just shut up and appreciate what LPM has done in only a period of 7 years. You should know that Zambia cant be a success over night, these things take time. Countries like Taiwan took 30 yrs to reach the development stage it has reached so how do you expect Zambia to reach first world status in only 7 years. Give me a break…

  33. [cont…]
You have heard countless times that the economy is growing. You may not see the results now but later you will see them and the chinese have contributed greatly to this development. Especially the “White” commercial farmers who have single handedly put 20,000 in employment. How many of you can do that. Not even the previous gov’ts managed to do that. If you think you can do better, allocate the $1 billion dollars needed to start a mine plus a smelter and start mining. Otherwise, just shut up and learn to appreciate the investment Zambia is receiving coz its clear you know nothing bout Economics. [done]

  34. #31 – 33

Zambian people can not eat statistics. The reason Zambia is receiving all these foreign businesses is not because of your master LPM, it’s because they are just after resources which are in high demand especially copper. Even if Chiluba was still the president, the same foreign businesses would be coming into Zambia so don’t try and credit that to LPM. Those white farmers would most likely not be in Zambia had it not be for the Zimbabwe issue, again don’t credit that to LPM. Now tell us what exactly LPM has done in the 7 yrs he has been in power you crazy Zambian? It’s external factors that are attracting foreign interest in Zambia not LPM.

  35. ..,thats what it is, call it whatever you like, but the chinese bring nothing but trash to africa, if you think they give a monkeys s#*t about you then keep on dreaming, before you know it they will steal more than you think they are investing. When the time comes for them to scrumb you will be left with empty shelves in the supermarkets, and fading chinese signs on the buildings just a reminder of how you allowed the foreigners loot your wealth while they blinded you with peanuts and porn films. Rubbish!

  36. #34
Since you claim it is foreign factors, why haven’t any Zambians taken advantage of these foreign factors. Why didn’t any Zambians get the $1 million dollar loan from a Zambian bank to start a commercial farm. Why is it that the copper mines where working below capacity. Why haven’t any Zambians started working companies. Zambia has a lot of usable land and why haven’t any Zambians taken the courage to farm this land. It is clear that Zambians are just good at talking and complaining and yet they fail to act. Everyone wants to be an Economist when they know nothing about it…

  37. You are definately a CRAZY ZAMBIAN. Just because people are investing in Zed does not mean that we should let them abuse Zambian. The investment is good but we reject the foul treatment of hard working bread winner. I am just a college student and earn more in a day than those workers make in a month. Yes development takes time but fairness should always be there.

DO NOT BE SLAVES JUST BECAUSE YOU DO NO HAVE INVESTMENT CAPITAL

  38. As a matter of fact, the workers who work for the “WHITE FARMERS” earn more than what the workers in Zimbabwe used to earn. The “WHITE FARMERS” have offered to build them houses so they can have a place to sleep in. They have put 20,000 people in employment and they have managed, just in a short period of time to make Zambia a growing bread basket. Zambians just complain. If you think you can do better then go ahead. If you think you have the skills to manage a commercial farm then go ahead but since you have failed and someone else has offered to do it for you, don’t talk crap to them because they are doing something you failed to do.

  39. You say that they came just to make money. Thats capitalism. Instead of complaining like little girls, you might as well learn from their expertise. Learn how they manage to mine effectively, how they manage to process the minerals. Learn the right type of crops to grow in the right season. After you learn from them, then you can boot them out but instead you choose to complain and complain and complain. This is why this country will never develop. You guys make me SICK!!!!!

  40. Crazy Dude! Calm dowm. Whose side are you on??? If your interest is Zambian development, then you should look at both sides of the coin. No one disputes the economic progress. The real issue is to make sure it benefits Zambians and not wide mouthed people like you. Have you ever worked on a farm on in a mine? Do you know what are considered as basic safety or a good working environment with good insentives? Be a voice for the people in the trenches don’t just speak from the confrots of your desk.

  41. Crazy Zambian,

The imppression you are giving is that foreigners come into Zambia empty handed, work hard within a short period of time, build these multi billion companies like the “white farmers”. If that is the case then surely there must be something wrong with Zambians. But you and I know that is not the case. The Zim farmers were given start up capital by foreign banks to restart their farming businesses while the majority of Zambians didn’t get and still don’t get access to the same capital facilities. Local Zambian businesses are highly taxed while foreigners hardly pay any tax at all. My point is that the playing field is not equal.

  42. Why cant Zambians invest in the mines also, Has anyone stopped Zambians from investing in the mine sector.

Someone is has planted a seed of hatred towards the Chines in Zambia. The Government needs to protect the Chines. Certain messages by our politicians are to serious and my nolonger fall under Zambia law but under international criminal law. Yesterday it was mere insults, today its beating, tomorrow might be something worse and the other day worser. The next thing we shall hear is someone being sort for by the International Court.

  43. You are right on Lusakan. The reason Zambians are anti Chinese is because someone has planted this hatred. Zambians would never complain when the investor is a white man. It is pure and simple. It is complex. To some people Zambian workers are always right. I would say fire the rioting workers let them get good conditions from Zambians who are urging them to destroy property. Who stops Zambians from investing i. Zambia cannot develop with this mentality. Our people are happy walking bare feet, farming with hoes and going to the bush for latrines. T

We now havean energy capacity crisis, where are tbhe Zambian investors. Let them put up a power generating company.

  44. Dear Crazy Zambian (Madam/Sir)

Why don’t you and I put together a business plan for a mine and employ these Chinese instead (I am sure we can mobilise collatarel). You know what, I agree that they (Chinese, White Farmers…) come with skills, but I think that we will be in a better position to safeguard the lives of fellow Zambians by owning the mines. After that we can venture into agriculture…do the same, but this time allow young and upcoming Zambians to run the farms jointly with us. Bring in the White farmers to teach them one or two things… What do you think?

  45. I would never agree to go into businesss with a person who thinks he can raise I biilion to go into mining. You think you can raise collateral in a countruy that could not pay its foreign debt peddged at 3 billion dollars. If you think that all you need is mines to become developed how do you explain the fact that many of the developed states have no natural resources, what does Malysia, Singapore, Austria etc have ? It takes capital, skills, technology and an educated labor force. What would an industrialist do with cheep uneducated labor ? There is plenty of that in Zambia. Whole villeges are bursting at the seems with peiople like that

  46. Crazy Zambian
What part of demanding a living wage is “just compalining” as your ignorant behind put it? We are not against the Chinese but against their sub standard labor practices. Even a monkey would have been able to make a profit in today’s matal market so do not crediit that to te chinese or mwanawasa..you sound like his stooge by the way. The basic argument here is on the treatmentof Zambian workers by this so called investors. If this investment is more valuable than Zambian life..then can keep it in China and trust me , we will not miss them. Phelps Dodge in heavly invested in DRC and you do not hear horror stories like the ones from the Chinese mines in Zambia cause this company

  47. respects labor laws even in a war torn country like Congo. So next time you wnat to open your mouth and claim this nonsense and think you know more than everyone commenting on this site, ask yourself why no one has been prosecuted for the over 50 lives lost and Chambishi and the recent loss of life at a Chinese Coal mine in SP…You are a very dumb individual.

  48. Im not dumb. Im just simply stating the facts. Don’t forget Zambia is abudant in cheap unskilled labour which is why the chinese are reluctant to increase wages. Simply because they might fire the workers and get new workers within a week because labour is out there. The problem is Zambians do not want to welcome foreign investment. You think you can do it by yourselves but when given the chance you go and skrew it up. You can see this for yourselves in the contruction business where projects done by Zambian companies don’t last long. The gov’t is forced to bring in foreign companies…

  49. [cont…]
If you look at Africa you’ll see that the countries achieving economic gain are countries with a lot of foreign investment. Look at Namibia or South Africa. Or even Zimbabwe before Mugabe developed the “we can do it by ourselves” mentality which you guys have. Now Zimbabwe has 100000% inflation and 80% unemployment. The highest in the world. The fact is until Zambians develop the skills and knowledge and technology to run things by themselves, we need foreign investment. Theory without practice is just theory…

  50. The reason Zambia can not do this by herself, is because of the continued greed from politicians, to fill their pockets… If Zambia wanted she could run mines and reap her own rewards, not rely on cheapskate chinese companies who really look at Zambia as cheap, illiterate imbecils, and disposable labour, and who cares if people die, as long as the goverment and politicians, can drive a new BMW/Mercedes benz, and pockets full of Chinese dollars,,,,

  51. [cont…]
but with foreign investment, Zambians will be able to get this practice which they need to run things properly. You guys are just thinking of yourselves, you’re not thinking of your children who could benefit from an industrialized economy. KK and his men had the same mentality you guys have by chasing away the “WHITES” in a “WHITE” dominated economy, they thought “they could do it themselves” and now we suffer because of that decision. Think about it before you complain. You guys clearly dont know what development is about. [done]

  52. Zimbabwe is a result of GREEDY Malicious Government, Not the fact they cant do it themself, It is a clear Picture of how one party rule and communist ideoligy combined with tribal tensions, can only ruin a prosperous Nation…. Just let the Chinese in and Zambia will go the same way……

  53. Transparency is much needed. How much is going to Levy and Mutati? How can they fall for such a loss unless there are personal benefits! I’d rather eat Kalembla today and get an education which will lead to prosperity

INVEST IN HIGHER EDUCATION TO SEE REAL ECONOMIC PROGRESS!!!

  54. Crazy Zambian! I really commend your openess and your broad mind, yes you have opened some very important issues which all zambian should consider as we talk about foreign investment! we need them to open up our minds and be able to do it,our own way. But we have a system and our way of governing our country! it is in this vein that investors as they come into our precious land, respect and follow our domestic Laws and international too!
We definatly wouldn’t like to see our own brothers and sisters been subjected to untold saferings all in the name of cheap labour or uneducated! No human being is to be subjected to inhuman degrading treatment. They should strike a balance at their level!

  55. Lets learn to give credit where its due! We are a growing country and its healthy to have different opinions with respects! lets not put it as if others opinion don’t count! respect each others opinion.
I am ver happy to see how well aticulated zambian are and broad minded.
Kaunda, chiluba and Mwanawasa have tried in there on ways with their straigth and weakness! and we are a developing Nation and one day all our questions will be answered well with good results.
Lets advice our brothers wisely and pliz No Violance.I hopeOur polician reads thses issues! Improve working conditions for every Zambian ,Lwami lapela batu bamulimu!(Lozi)

  56. I think there is nothing wrong with foreign investment as long as we have effective laws protecting Zambia’s interest. Even in countries like Britain, some of the biggest companies are not owned by British citizens, however, the British gov’t has put laws in place which ensure that british workers are looked after, get paid well and are working in good working environment. This is the area that our laws and gov’t are weak. The problem is that the capitalist idealogy has been over subscribed in Zambia. We need a form of social consciousness to ensure that as a country we benefit in terms of skills transfer and better living conditions. If we have all this, we wouldn’t be seeing strikes.

  57. Have you seen the latest in The Post? 50 Chon chwi companies are coming to zed with an investment of $800m spread out over 5 years.

My simple math tells me we’re going to allow each of them to gain superiority over the zambians they’ll be supervising for just about K986.67m per month

That’s how cheap they think we are.

  58. …in “Fists of Fury” as a title is quite an eye-catcher, well done you should be commended.

  59. #60, good riddance. Zambia is looking to make progress. Stay where you are and lick your own balls and suck your own dick. Imbecile.

  60. Way to go? you do not sit and negotiate with greed? you demand what is right for you….and that is what civil servants should have done a decade ago. zambian politicians will forever take them for ride? work hard and demand respect. way to go and i wish the miners in sinazongwe would do the same..viva justice for all.

  61. number 61..! if you can not hold your fithy tougue…this is no place for you . grow up man… and pull up your pants…we do not need to see your fithy boxers…?

  62. In this day & age pipo r still resorting to stone throwing as a means to negotiate.Shame shame shame.
Pipo dont be misled. The Chinese only have 1 copper mine in Sinazeze in SP.I get appalled by the misinformation here that the Chinese were sold the major copper mines in Zed.Wat they have in Chambeshi is a smelter.
    Xenophobia indeed.

  63. All you guys are not making sense with your emotional debates. Why can’s you use logic? Sata has made Zambians hate the Chinese. I pray that he will never rule Zambia. He can do anything to get to Plot 1. Everything lies in the hands of the government, they should raise taxes, set a minimum wage, strong labour laws and take no nosense from investors. Remember, Anglo American pulled out of Zambia, so the Chinese came in.

  64. Sad that our poor citizens are now facing People’s Liberation Army that has come to occupy Zambia under the guise of investment. LPM has no analytical mind to understand that he is not dealing with ordinary Chinese. Most of the fellows that China sends out are veterans of the PLA. The implication is that on a one to one fist fight, the Zambian will be clobbered. Do not forget that he is poorly fed, and has no recourse to any legal pillars since LMP and his grz have bastardized the law to suit themselves.

  65. #64 As long as we have leaders like Sata in our midst pipo will be lumpens when duty calls. This hatrd Sata has created in zed just amounts to xenophobia, nothing else.He was paid by the Taiwanese to bad mouth the chinese, but pipo forget he sold zed cheaply in disgiuse of patriotism.

#65 Rightly said, we need to strenghen our governance frmaework, laobor laws, tax laws (done), investment policy, etc.And implement them with a iron fist. The message will be spread.

#66 I do not know what u expect, with all this hatred being spread. These guys come to make money, I know u would pour millions for nothing too. This is normal, butcoz its a chinese investor we become picky on these issues.

  66. Zambians are considered peace loving people but peace wont put food on your table. We must learn to fight for whats ours coz none else will do it.
So bravo to the miners who whacked the chinese. At the end of the day there’s so much money being made these investors wont pull out after one bouting but instead our people will get an extra notch on their salaries.

  67. #65 Come back and work under the chinese and you will feel what those miners are feeling. Your hatred for Sata will take you to HELL my friend?

  68. pliz Ministry of Labour do something reasonable about this issue.those chaps have no powers to beat up Zambians…deport all of them at once.!!!

  69. #70 Is sata holy? We will pay for this xenophobia being spread by sata. And by the way, he was paid for this, patriotism my foot.

  70. Xenophobia, soon we shall head to south africa level of xenophobia because of irresponsible statements by some poltician. How many times are our zambians mistreated by everyone, how much do you pay your maid, 100 thousand kwacha, and is the maid on any form of compansation if injured? no! How many times do we hear that some mwenye somewhere locked up people to make bread to avoid pilfering? Do we see the kind of violence as exihibited on the copperbelt, NO! well we are slowly reaping what we are sowing, guys this is a time for sober reflection, forget about your political affiliation!

  71. There is need to jail all ministry of labour officials. I think that they, like LPM and Mutati are in the pockets of China.

I am sure that the master plan now is to cheat at the 2011 elections so that their asses do not get burned should someone else win other than the mmd.

The wanton disregard of Zambian life by all investors is a call to all that we need a grz that places Zambians first.

  72. #73 are you saying all Zambians should sit back and accept whatever treatment is dished out to them by their bosses?
Maybe if all maids rioted they just might start getting K500 000 coz at the end of the day they do provide a valuable service.

  73. #71 Ba Nchelebula
This was a fair fight the Zambians Just got beaten.Even when a tiny Chinese man phisically wallops a Zambian man who is twice his size Mwanawasa and the Government are to blame. Next it will be the thin Indian men physicaly beating our Zambian men and the blame will be heaped on the Government.

  74. Anonymous, what are Sata’s solution to Zambia? Sata is only appealing to people’s emotions like I will chase the Chinese from Zambia etc. Sata is not fit to govern, infact if he had to win the Presidency he would not even chase the Chinese or do anything different from what the MMD is doing. He just knows how to appeal to the masses, who are not as educated like pipo on this forum. In 1991 as a youngster, we believed everything the MMD said. But know I know better.

  75. Stupid Zambia. You want pay more no work hard. Lezy too much that is reason you country too poor.
    Work hard hard hard.

No education man want salary like general manager. Foolish.

  76. I take it your silence means YES, Crazy Zambian…I will start the process of developing the business plans…You can, in the meantime, start talking to the banks. I will provide you my contacts in due course. Let’s make a difference!!! I will be in Zambia before the next quarter ends, so by then we should have had a good sense of who would be willing to fund our ventures. Any more takers? Oh I will also look into potential partners outside of Zambia. More later

  77. Since when did Zambians become so racist. This is because of a power hungry politician who is not educated to run this country. This is why my vote 2011 is going to Hakainde Hichilema, because i want only educated leaders to rule. The Zambian workers had no right to resort to violence, they should have gone to the negotiations table to discuss the salaries. They should know that if they got fired today, they would be replaced within 2 days because labour is plenty in Zambia. This only happened because Sata is brain washing people to hate the people who have brought them some income at the end of the month.

  78. #75 The point I am driving home is, isn’t this xenophibia? Why only the Chinese and this time around? Does someone have an answer for this.

  79. you will find cases of xenophobia whereever you go in the world (and racism) Dont see why zambia should be an exception. Ideally Government should protect its people but it clearly isnt doing so…guess its up to you and i to fight for what we deserve.
when KCM miners went on strike in 2005 they got a better deal afterwards… and there’s been no repeat coz the management incurred more losses from the strike compared to the 20% increment the miners wanted.
so i guess those working for the chinese are trying to get whats theirs.

  80. When Mwanawasa took office in 2001, he declared he would govern by law and he threatened any law breaker would be visited! WHY is the law not visiting these Chinese who have murdered (chambishi disaster) and exploited the Zambians? Mr. President keep your word.

  81. this is thoroughly upsetting and disappointing the violence is unwarranted what happened to trade unions and their bargaining principles like picketing and all that? this violence is nonsense and i dont care who started it violence is still violence they are both responsible for their stupid actions.

  82. No. 61. Essien’s Tackle © 2008, I strongly advise you not to take on me man,
I’ve been frustrated with the runnings of my government for a long time. You don’t wanna start with me.

  83. No. 78 Yeng, you can’t even write English, let alone speak it. What you doin on this forum anyway? Take yourself back to your Chich and Chong motherland, learn the our official language and maybe you’ll stand a better chance at succeeding in Zambia.
You don’t have a right to call us zedians foolish or lazy.

  84. We don’t need you. Suck you’re own dick. “learn the our official language and maybe you’ll stand a better chance at succeeding in Zambia.” You grammar leaves a lot to be desired.

  85. I will close the comments if you continue to insult.
    GROW UP!

If you are as concerned about Zed as you claim, come back home with your skills and let us make the much needed progress.

  86. 85 and 61…? we are not interested in where you are ? be it in london or usa …or JHB? we’re simply asking you two to behave like adults. do not try to bring your fake gangster image here…! we have no time for such bull cramp?

Continue delivering pizza or go scrab more floors in McDonalds as this blog is for mature adults…and not bena john soleya ubwali? ….go hillbrow if you want to see real gangsters?

  87. And I don’t need you either. But I’m very interested in where you are. Don’t get carried away. You all seem to be forgetting the main issue at hand “Unscrupulous Investors”. Forget about screen names “Mob Justice, Essien’s Matako, Minyoba” it’s all just a bunch of bull.
Face the matters affecting the nation. What’s in a name? Please. By the way, I don’t do pizza deliveries.

  88. number 91? i do not give a damn about what you deliver or what you do? you lucky…we are on the blog……i would knocked the crap out of you? i do not take bull from fake gangters like you. have respect for elders..mwaiche…in kabwata we used to call in wrist watch mwaiche. you are one lucky punk. 90. no. 93. MOB JUSTICE, I’ve seen you on other forums, I actually used to have some respect for the views you presented. So now that I see you are just an everyday bastard from f*cking Kabwata, you’re probably an uneducated faggot b*tch.
Yeah, right. I’d knock your f*cking lights out you hairy-balled imbecile.
I never said I was a gangster mate, just a radical patriot. I have a very good job in Real Estate. Oh, I love my country and my views have never changed.
Were you born out of a defiled ho? Then your father’s nuts should have been castrated and we’d all be one soul-loser free.
And this is how we win. Thanks to you, my response to your insults will probab lead to the closure of this forum

  91. pipo why are we not seeing the pain our friends went through before the riot? in zambia today, who can survive on K450 000 per month for 08 months.
one has no house. the rentals are K200 000 per month.

  92. Mwaiche 95! every coin has two sides. I am a respected family man, college educated and i attend church. But disrepect me…i knock the crap out of you in front a preacher? Let us not allow ourselves to sink this low? let us refrain from using abusive langauge on the blog? it that too much to ask? we have mutual enemies to fight, let us concentrate on real issues? you are at liberty to use any name, but for pete’s sake avoid the lick and suck my …stuff? I assume you are over 18? Okey you win..but avoid using abusive langague? satisfied…?

  93. We call a truce,
and therefore take the next wise step to avoid name-calling and concentrate on the bigger issues affecting our economy and nation.

  94. The problem is that Zambians are arrogant for nothing. A country which is among the poorest 20 countries in the world says it can go it alone ! When others are going to the moon Zambians are walking bare feet in kalingalinga and scores of villeges. They are using hoes and axes to farm. Show me a country which developed without investment. The United States developed by attracting capital and skills from Europe. The investment China is making in Zambia is peanauts compared to the investment it is making in the USA and UK. The people opposed to the Chinese have been influenced by the thug would be president Sata. What a shame that people are willing to follow an empty drum on ethnic grouds
