Make Zambia clean campaign working

Share

Since January this year, only one patient has died at Matero Centre from cholera while the rest, apart from the current 31 cases, had been successfully treated and discharged from the centres. This was according to ministry of health spokesperson Dr.Canisius Banda.

Dr Banda said the figure of the cases handled so far had been a tremendous reduction from last and other years’, mainly because of various measures that had been put in place.

He said that the ‘Make Zambia Clean and Healthy’ campaign had assisted reduce the disease prevalence, and hailed the local authorities for undertaking various measures, particularly the removal of vendors from the streets.

Dr.Banda said the ministry of Health was working with the Lusaka City Council (LCC) in burying shallow wells and in applying lime into those found suitable as sources of water.
Thirty-one people suffering from cholera in Lusaka are admitted to various cholera centres in the townships.

Dr. Banda said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that by the close of last week, 31 patients were still undergoing treatment at five centres in the capital city, the only area still experiencing the waterborne disease.

Dr Banda said Lusaka had recorded 253 cases since January out of which 31 people were still admitted.

The 31 were admitted in Matero, Chipata, Kanyama, Chawama and George townships.

  1. …and those who are not infected are immuned to dirt and germs. People in compounds wade in paddles of stagnant rain and sewage water. Kwena paliba ama ninja pa zed, whats with eating rats (mbeba)and other rubbish. Its certainly survival of the fittest!

  2. I dont mean to sound heartless but i think Lusaka’s population is too big for the city. I think people who live in the compound areas should be relocated to other towns along the line of rail where they can take part in activities like Farming. Lusaka and the Copperbelt are overcrowded and cannot support there populations so a relocation program should be enacted. This will not only bring them some steady income but will also bring about the growth of other towns and turn small inactive towns into busy cities. Just my thoughts anyways. Tell me what you think.

  3. “Crazy_Zambian” awe uli chaume we need such contribution,if mwanawasa was my uncle i would have asked him to appoint you as Minister of Finance and national planning.Anyways come 2011 i will be your campaign manager…

  4. Can Dr Banda clearly state what measures the government have put in place. Our towns are extremely dirty, Lusaka in particular.

  5. Whilst I appreciate Crazy_Zambian’s contribution I wish to look back and reflect on why lusaka and copperbelt towns are crowded, this is basically due to urbanisation. The town planners were sitting idle without reacting to mushrooming shanty compounds. It will be extremly difficult to relocate these people to other towns coz they infact ran away from those areas. One of the best methods being used in some african countries to bring sanity is by demolishing ramshackles and erecting better ones with proper planning by the powers that and ensuring that anything erected outside the plan is demolished immediately, hence that way it will be easier to provide manuncipal services

  6. Crazy_Zambian it’s not about how much lusaka is populated. It’s just that we Zambians are just irresponsible. Instead of throwing litter in the bins we would rather throw on bare ground. I ve been to places where the population is even twice bigger than that of lusaka but they are clean. Maybe our government should introduce street workers and put bins around and we should also learn to be clean ourselves.Don’t expect other people to do it for us.

  7. The govt sld strongly sensitize the communities on this, may they sld allow the police to arrest anyone found throwing things around esp those in cars on the road, they carry infection from lst and throw it in Mumbwa. They put bins around we steal and use to make pots and dishes, they even go further to make many holes on these bins but still we get and make mbaula 4 sell( a real zambian)
