Mugabe happy with March 29 polls

Share

African Union observer mission head, Ahmad Tejan Kabbah met President Robert Mugabe at State House on Thursday to discuss various issues concerning Zimbabwe’s 29 March harmonized elections.

Speaking to journalists soon after the meeting, Kebbah said President Mugabe had expressed satisfaction with the way the polls were conducted.

” President Mugabe was relaxed during the meeting,” said Kebbah, who is also the former President of Sierra Leone.

” He is of the view that the country would resolve any of its problems amicably,” he said, adding President Mugabe also expressed hope that the remaining results of Saturday’s harmonized polls would be announced soon.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has to-date announced full results for the lower house of parliament with the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) winning 99 seats against 97 of Zanu-PF.

The Arthur Mutambara MDC faction got 10 seats while a single seat went to an independent candidate.

This is the first time that the ruling Zanu PF party has lost the majority in Parliament since independence in 1980.

Kebbah said he had also met MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai, who like President Mugabe, had also said the elections were free and fair.

” Tsvangirai said he will accept the results,” he said. He even spoke highly about President Mugabe, saying the president has offered a lot to Zimbabwe.”

President Mugabe, Tsvangirai, Simba Makoni, a former Zanu PF member and independent candidate Langton Towungana contested in the presidential election.

Tsvangirai’s party has already released its own results which indicate that he won 50, 3 percent of the vote against President Mugabe’s 43, 8 percent.

ZEC has deplored the move by the MDC to release its own results while it was still verifying and collecting results for the presidential election from all the 10 provinces.

Meanwhile, the African Union has commended the way Zimbabwe held its harmonized elections.

” Everyone involved in the polls was disciplined and professional. The elections were very orderly,” said Kebbah, who was due to leave the country on Thursday.

He said Zimbabwe is one of the few countries in the world that continues to uphold democracy by holding elections regularly.

Kebbah, however, castigated the international media for the biased coverage of Zimbabwe elections, saying a number of their reports were false.

The foreign press, particularly from Western countries, has been hostile to President Mugabe and the government since implementation of land reforms in 2000.

  1. OH! so Robert z around? Man thr z tym 4 everything & now its tym u leave that state house without further humiliation.Thse former presdos u r talkin to wont help yo country.

  2. Wanzelu #1
Would you please kindly ask the manager of that internet cafe you are using to replace those missing keys on the keyboard because We’re finding really difficulty to understand what you’re trying to type.

  3. Robert was in diapause or aestivation after the elections. He was thinking of the next move to rig elections if given chance by ZANU-PF tomorrow after the meeting. Can Mugabe win genuinely? Wait and see MDC will win. Who is not fed up of Mugabe rule?

  4. Yes boyi, Prof Mutengo…….. have been so busy man,

on one side you see a Dictator on another one may say his a liberator but what can i say……the white Zim Farmers are on their way back, in full force to get back land from the few locals mostly Mugabes friends and war veterans. The economy run to the dogs and guess what ! the stupid muzungu since Mogan will be brought will bring 3 times the cash zambia got after 1991 elections. If it were possible they would camp in Zim? you know why coz muzungus were chased like dogs now they want to bring our people bread and batter at the expense of our land…… its a situation of hand to mouth and have ur land or bread and batter for you

  5. if we have your land. secondly stupid Mogan was a trade unionist , does it ring a bell? well not to pre empt the chap! may be he will be better than our congolise Kafupi who knows. Personally i wish them well. They learnt their lesson never you laugh at someone…we were laughed at when we bought bread in Falls town…..who is worse now??????

  6. By the way the old man is preparing for a re-run….if their constitution is good eonough he should not be President 4 the time being…….Chief Justice would be interim President until after elections. As to who wins i dont really care………

  7. Is it that Africa has a shortage of leaders. Why do we constantly vote for OLD LEADERS. People in there 70’s and 80’s. WHY WHY WHY WHY. Cant we vote for younger leaders. The old are tired and are not as updated with economic success as the young. Zimbabwe, vote wisely. We need Zambians to relocate to Zimbabwe because there is nothing happening in Zambia.

  8. Eeye we shall also grab UNUSED land in the hands of white farmers. How can I not have land in my own country when whites have large pieces of land? Most of the fertile land along the line of rail especially Choma and Mazabuka is owned by whites while the indigenous people are in marginal land. Think about it.

  9. There is always three seasons and it´s just about time Robert left.Accept defeat if you got guts to give away all the benefits that power offers our African leaders.

  10. Zambian security is manning its borders with Zimbabwe to prevent farmers and mahule ba cheap from returning home.

  11. # Muchindu, Phil before the whites came those lands you are talking about were empty. In zambia belive me we have so much land for every one.
Even in zimbabwe, there is plenty of fertile farm land lying idle but just because the farms in question had structures, and were seen to be working the vets wanted them. I can bet you if the whites were offered empty land to leave those farms and they had, those vets would want to relocate the whites again seeing working farms.

  12. #Muchindu . Phil. What a shame! you dont own any land in your own country and you are obviously well educated. Maybe you should get off your arse and start earning some money to buy some land, instead of looking to steal it from the muzungu.

  13. Robert Mugabe can make a good revolutionary leader for Zim. But he should have changed his policies when he saw they were failing. He is a visionary. Our old freedom fighters had vision and conviction far much than these democratic leaders of today. Look at KK, Nkruma, Nyerere,Castro, Gadafi, Mugabe, Mandela etc. these were and are men who could die for their convictions/visions of which some did. I often wonder whther Africa/third world is really ready for democracy or has it been imposed. We need to grow gradually n evolve into that area. For me, it is necesary to have dictators in some countries in order to bring a common good. Zed had a blesing 4 KK to prepare us. Now we can b democrazy

  14. I wonder what there’s to even be happy. Happy with what? Chain of rigging attempts?

This young “8+4 year old” boy called Mugabe does NOT have respect for African community and humanity at large. He thinks Zimbabwe is his personal to order country; that it belongs to him …and that he can use all sorts of stupid reasons to be holding the precious country on a time-bomb for so long!

The problem is that he thinks he is too educated to be controlled by his own people and anyone. Whatever these so called International organisation are doing about the situation at large. Zim neighbours like us should do something about it! African union, United Nations, SADCC and … get up and Wor

  15. Iwe #11 stop being racist! How much money do you have to develop the land? You think the Banks are waiting to give you a loan?

  16. Mugabe must go! enough is enough. He has destroyed that beautiful country. zimbabwe will never be the same even after Mugabe is gone. Look at Zambia, we will never ever get where we were once before. Its sad that even people who are educated have failed to bring back Zambia to where it was once.

Thats why a gran mother to my friend has no regard for educated people, shame on us who are educated.

Mugabe is OLD AND TIRED AND HAS RUN OUT OF IDEAS.

  17. number 20 to cut ur story short…..only whites build and blacks…. only break? am i rite? u r a genius son. i think u need to stand in the nxt elections in Zam.

  18. DISGRACE TO africa..!!!! STEP DOWN ALREADY U *****..DAMMMM

THE ARE THE *****S WHO GIVE AFRICA A BAD NAME..ATA SE NABUKOTE FUMA PO

  19. Bob and the huge bunch of his enlightened deportees are such a shameful lot. They go down the rural areas to cheat the masses that all is well in order to woo their support? Your time is up man…leave power to the people. They have decided to buck you out and hence no need resist it. Just go & others should come in. Enough of you man!

  20. Are we still talking about Mugabe? What’s up in Zim? Can the Almighty intervene in this whole scam? We are tired of this tired lion -Mugabe

  21. I wonder why this little old goat (Robert) cant just accept defeat. What is that he has to offer to the Zim people that he hasnt done in the last 28 years. This arrogant tyrant needs to be pierced with a copper bullet in that stubborn head of his. We are fed up of his dictatorship. I somehow blame other african leaders for supporting dictators. Anyway they are also dictators as they are in the same boat. Mugabe, may you die soon. F#@K you.

  22. No 21. Thanks for your comment.Do you think that i can just come and stand for elections pa ZED. MMD is another party of crooks. Full of recircled leaders. It will be hard to un seat MMD.We have tried to vote against MMD but they always win the elections, same as Mugabe.Africa where are we heading to.

  23. Unproud African, wherever you may be, just know that the problem is not our continent but it’s people and YOU are one of them! There’s no solution in the blame game we like playing, let’s put our minds together instead and deal with our problems effectively. There’s a lot to be done, yes, but it can be done, little by little.
I for one will never give up my continent. I know that one day Africa will be top dog when the rest of the world starts crumbling. Home is home, no matter how f**ked up it may be!

  24. Back to the news from Zim, it’s really confusing: when I read The Post, it stated that Magabe’s party will not accept MDC’s victory. The story above says Mugabe is ready to negotiate. What’s really happenning?

  25. wat is this thug in Zimbabwe trying to do? i mean you stick to ur guns if there is any persived benifit. wats the aim of it all? he thinks by taking farms away from the whites his hitting back at the British. No one is losing out here, not Mugabe, not the British and certainly not the White farmers ( they can make it anywer in the world)…….. but whos suffering? its the Masses in Zimbabwe the very people he fought independence for. I hope SATA is taking a note of all this. Another potential tyrant for Africa if voted into power!!

  26. By the way, why do u think that headlines only come from Palestine, Irag, now Zim, previously North Korea, Cuba etc. Who sets the agenda? CNN and BBC, the rest due to lack of resources make reference to these news items as they cant gather their own, to parrot the western worlds understanding of issues! Elections in Zim hav always been free and fair, and Zims have always voted for Bob. The rural Zims, beneficiaries of land and not depended on salaries are not as oppossed to Bob as the urban dwellers. They dont depend on electricity, piped water, food from shops etc. Remember Sata also got all urban votes. Problems faced by the “some of us” is not universal! Hard working productive rural peop

  27. Cont., dont bother about the loud mouths of rapid urbunizers. As long as they can cultivate and store their grain, the only basic thing they need from the shop is soap and fuel, period. And luckily they are the majority! So the defenders of land from Britain and its ally, US will continue to win the race, shame of them. You think things will remain the same in RSA, thats a joke. The mistake they made was to confine themselves to Zim, rob Zed and Malawi of resources to build Zim, their “homeland”. This displaced many creating a problem that was to come and is here, unfortunately for modern Zims. Had they spread out into Zed, Malawi and built these countries like their home, we would be

  28. Cont., talking of a prosperous SADC attracting good investments. Unfortunately for Zim, the whites who robbed Zed of its cooper resources to build Zim infrastructure and irrigated commercial farms have left with their cash and the cooper cash from Zed is no longer available to re-invest in agriculture. The govt needs the same west rapist and thugs to pump in cash, that is agony! So poor Morgan knows that the liberation is actually only on paper, whites are here full force palying the game on a chess board! What lessons does Zed learn from this? Invest in people now that cash is coming in to reduce dependency on the white engineered economic environment! Yebo naluta sono, ndine winu mwa bana!

  29. I can do without your colonial rhetoric just like uncle bob.Pipo need food on the table, stop taking them 30 yrs back.Let this tyrant leave and join mandela, KK, etc in the league of elders.

  30. Yet again Mugabe is desperately clinging to power by his teeth,in an attempt to swindle Zimbabweans of their hard- earned democracy.

  31. Its time for the old man to go. ‘Atu sebanya ku Africa Mugabe’. I have to commend the international support that has been given through media coverage, because had this issue only been televised within Africa, this thing would have been swept under the carpet and Mugabe would have won with a majority of ‘ghost voters’. How embarassing. I’ve watched the news curling my toes wondering ‘why cant this old man accept defeat?’, especially with the world witnessing the downfall of a country, by a man that obviously only cares about him and his army. There’s nothing more inhuman than making a fool of your own people. THIS NEEDS TO END, BA CHULA KU ZIMBABWE!!!

  32. The peaceful election process in Zim has been made possible because of the absence of ‘international obesrevers’. Kenya and other African countries should learn a lesson. African observers are enough and capable. Well done Mugabe and lONG LIVE.

  33. “BREAKING NEWS ON CNN.COM

Mugabe has been assassinated by a dissident member of his politburo. It is believed the politburo were sharply split between endorsing Mr Mugabe for the possible run-off and accepting that the ruling ZANU-PF had lost the election.Members of the politburo are at this time in a state of panic and confusion.More will follow.

  34. BBC TV has sent their veteran reporter, John Simpson, to Harare.
John Simpson was in Belgrade when Milosevic fell, and he was in Baghdad, when Saddam fell. If he is in Harare, it can mean only one thing. The BBC has arranged for Mugabe to fall

  35. Magabe should rest now,the zim pipo have spoken! if he rigs, then he will be empeached by the parliamentarians! He’s brought shame to the zim and african pipo, while bearing in mind that his land restitution policy was a positive decesion but the emplimentation was poorly done and nevr even withdrew his men from causing blood shade and look where it has led the country to now! Zim is a nice country with portetial dvlpmt!

Give way for new brains and new ideas that will rescue this nationa from the masse!

  36. All those who illegally benefitted from Zambian copper shall forever be cursed. As for the situation in Zimbabwe the chickens are indeed coming home to roost!

  37. Ooh my GOd! What on earth is wrong with some african depondent leaders. Recentlty it was in kenya and now its Zimbabwe. Do African leaders ever learn a lesson? I doubt. Why can’t AFrican leaders learn from Bostwana? Are they blind, are they dumb, are they deaf? I wonder what is wrong. Power is sweet, ask chiluba and he will give a good lecture on how sweet power is.

  38. My heart bleeds for African people. We have suffered for long. Let God liberate Africa. Why is the continent cursed with some junk mis-leaders

  39. The United Kingdom made Mr. Mugabe by not honouring the land Agreement they entered into in 1979/80 during the climax of the negotiations for the total independence of a country once called Zimbabwe/Rhodesia under Abel Muzorewa. Had they honoured that Agreement, i doubt if all those land-grabbings would be there. The British faltered on the Agreement and the result is what we are witnessing today in Zimbabwe, including President Mugabe’s refusal to accept the obvious – election results. Do not blame it on anyone Mr Brown (not from the ‘Mind your Language’ TV show) but yourselves (U.K.) for the mess in my neighbour. You made Saddam Hussein and when he did not want to tow your line, you

  40. killed him in cold blood. Why should the U.K. and the USA be getting away with this in the name of the ‘International Community’. How many more of our leaders do you want to incacerate like NORIEGA, murder like SADDAM or simply demonise like MUGABE? Let’s have the LANCASTER House Agreement re-tabled, but this time at the U.N. with China and Russia present and see if indeed Mugabe was wrong!

  41. #50 Your observations are intereting, but do you think we would be able to have such a lively, open discussion as this, in a newspaper in China or Russia. Do you know that they spend vast sums of money to block internet sites to prevent information from reaching their citizens? Are China and Russia famous for even handed treatment of its citizens?

  42. #51 thanks alot for your candid observations. What i was alluding to is that when it comes to international issues, especially as they border on unfair play in the political arena, they tend to be on the side of the oppressed or marginalised. Yes, i totally agree with you that their domestic way of handling issues is something of great concern to all and sundry. I bet, had it not been for the constant interventions by the two countries under discussion in the Security Council, America and the U.K. would have by now overrun the world with their lust to be the World Policeman. But that is not to take anything away from: Both countries are stinking of human abuses in their backyard.

  43. #52 Democracy or dictatorship? I prefer democracy, either way the world will always be ruled by control freaks, because you have to be a control freak to make it to the top. The decent guys never get there. Maybe Barak Obama will become the next presidentof USA but the trouble is, he seems like a decent guy and there are a lot of crazy people in America.

  44. # 52 52. Chintu BWINGI
Its all about $$$$. If you dont have it you are ruled and swallow what the west gives you. If you don’t swallow, see saddam. even gadafi is begining to be force swallowed.

  45. How can some of you blame muzungu for Zimbabwes troubles now? Bob kicks them out (even off the land they bought from him) and our economy goes down the toilet, they own next to nothing now and you still want to take the only farms producing food for our people. As for the others racing back to get land you could not pay them to come back from Zambia, Botswana and the rest. wake up

Mutengo Waminga obviously your grand education was wasted on you if you still support Mugabe or are you on his payroll?

  46. Zambian # 33, you’ve hit the nail on the head! Our Zambian Mugabe is Sata. That is one hell of a dictator. The day Zambians will decide to elect him as president is the day they will curse the day they heard his name in political circles.

  47. mugabes polices were failing, the only industry porducing the most forex, the farming industry bulked at his attempts to black mail them to pay more taxes to finance his curruption and failing idias and he resorted to grabing farms to apesse the uneducated mases.
and now as a result they need to import food. Zimbabwe is the most developed counry after SA in terms of infrastrucutre in Southern africa.
It will take time , may be 15 yrs for the indeginus to pickup were the brilliant white farmers left off from just like uganda took time after dada kicked out the indians, though zim wont take as long to recover.
