UNZA workers go-slow ends

Share

University of Zambia unionised workers have called off their go-slow following a settlement with Management.

Workers representative, Fenison Mwape confirmed the development.

He said the strike action had been discontinued after the union and management reached an agreement.

Dr. Mwape said management and the union had fruitful discussions at which most of the workers concerns were addressed.

He called on all workers to report for work immediately.

The government recently pledged to give the University of Zambia a supplementary budget of K44 billion to address the impasse between management and employees.

The unionised employees had withdrawn labour to press for increased funding.

  1. whether it is true or not thet that UNZA go slow has ended. I would like to urge the govt to expedite the release of those monies otherwise the next go slow will be detrimental to the nation. The widowers, widows, retirees and orphans occupying institution houses should vacate them as soon they are given their dues. Some children have mistaken UNZA for their home because they stayed their too long. Marshlands is like an orphanage.

  2. Great news, but let us act in a manner that will curtail future unnecessary UNZA closures.

Closures have had their adverse effects on students who end up overstaying at UNZA. Shortest degree programmes in most institutions run for 3 years while those at UNZA take 4 years. And so, forcing students to stay on another 6 months upto 2 years on top of the 4 years is unproductive and sad to write the least.

Let us, for once, start working towards making sure that all programmes run within their stipulated times.

  3. we need to find out how much of the contributions reach the intended.how about census or billboard advertisments to encourage patronage to the web site as a way of disemination and enlightment of the public. we need more than ever feed back guys on our contributions

You mean UNZA has institutionAL houses? I thought they were sold off during Kafupi’s adminstration. Kindly confirm this. You being home away from home, you tend to miss some important facts!

  5. Handsworth court and Canada Court houses were not sold and those are institutional houses. They have not been sold and UNZA is still getting rent charges in addition to Marshlands Village where some rooms have been already commercialized. If you want an office you can apply to Marshlands. There is gold rush.

  6. The only problem with the situation in our Zambian politics is that our current government do not believe in human resource investment. I guess these people fear that as the people are becoming so educated they risk losing their jobs, no wonder even after school it takes atleast 4 SOLID years to find a job. This is because these chaps who don’t want to retire or replaced by the upcoming intellectuals hide behind years of experince. Where am I going to get experience from? Is it abroad or in the streets.

Government should learn from developed countries. Those got developed by investing in human resource. Zambia watch out. It is a 2 way thing, removing the govt or running away from Zambia.

  7. In peace with man, we can do it. Four years at UNZA becomes seven years. I am therefore a DOCTOR DUE TO THE SEVEN YEARS I am yet to acquire. Peace always. Let me advise those applying to go to CBU if they wish to be in employment soon.

The government needs to take such issues serious or else they risk being removed from power in 2011. May GOD bless UNZA. Peace peace peace. Amen
