Share

April 2008 ZANIS- Sinazongwe District Development Coordinating Committee (DDCC) has expressed disappointment at Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation’s (ZESCO) failure to complete power installation at Kariba South Primary School and four sites earmarked for Irrigation Schemes.

Sinazongwe District Commissioner Laiven Apuleni said ZESCO was frustrating government development projects in the district because money was paid in advance to light up the School but nothing has been done.

“I am not impressed with the operation of ZESCO in the district and in this era of information they are even failing to provide quotation and giving out bills at the district level but they have to go to Choma,” Mr Apuleni said.

Mr. Apuleni said poverty could not be addressed in the district if ZESCO fails to provide power to the four sites earmarked for irrigation Schemes.

He said it was difficult to understand why power has not been installed at the sites earmarked for irrigation schemes and at the School that was belt in Siansowa area when money was paid in advance.

The DC said government should have used the money on other activities if ZESCO had said they were not ready to do the work.

Sinazongwe District Planning officer Syamwiinga Siabbalo told the meeting that K50 million was paid to ZESCO in 2004 but nothing has been done.

He pointed out that the situation was hindering the provision of evening classes to reduce on illiteracy levels in the district.
Sinazongwe District Agriculture Coordinator Tundu kaonga said the African Development Bank (ADB) the financier of the Irrigation Schemes has expressed worry at ZESCO’s failure to complete the works on time.

Mr. Kaonga said the Bank has thrown the challenge on the local leadership to try and talk to ZESCO to ensure that power was installed at the sites before the contractor resumed work
He said Nzenga irrigation Scheme has been advertised and the contractor would be on the site before July.

Mr. Kaonga noted that the contractor would need power to complete some of his works within the stipulated time and it would be difficult if ZESCO fails to install power.

  1. Inywe ba ZESCO,you are useless chaps!how the hell do you fail to provide power to Sinazongwe and yet lake Kariba is all over that area.you get power from there and the people around there can’t even switch on a bulb!what will happen the day they shall protest and ban you from their area?

  2. Lets blame ourselves, becasue if we were to raise against Zesco, this fools will not be treating us like this. They switch off power at times without notices, we have lost alot of electrical appliances and they have not compensated us.When time comes for them to disconnect us they dont put things into considerations.I think its time we did someting to Zesco.
they have taken us for granteed

  3. It is again about ZESCO. What do you expect from a company that is pampered like an egg? A baby of the govt. Whatever it does Muongoti wlll defend it because it is always right.

  4. Tipical Zambian stories year in year out. Power cut, Power shortage, Grain shortage, Cement shortage, Mealie Meal shortage, shortage of doctors, shortage of teachers, shortage of hospitals, shortage of water, shortage of funds, shortage of roads, shortage of lecturers, shortage of fuel e.t.c. And yet we have the government and leaders.

  5. Why is it that each time theres’ a subject to do with zesco, everybody is complaining about its services? Who really is enjoying zesco services? Does it mean Govt or indeed zesco mgmt, are not aware about all these concerns?

  6. fuswa you are not good for development. I dont care if they are aware because people of zambia want better services which are a sign of development.

  7. My friend # 7, don’t get me wrong. You want me to be roasted by HK? My point is, i know there people from zesco mgmt that read and post comments on the blog, therefore, if maybe they could come out and say something.

  8. Zesco go to the govt there is K600 BILLION unutilized in order to solve the electricity issue. Mr. Chibiliti has revealed the availability of the monies. I do not understand why the govt can’t help you but when they are stranded with civil servant salaries they get monies from you. Sometimes there is even debt swapping in case of power bills owed by the govt. We seriously want development now and not next year. We should learn from the ants or termites. Why do you want to react to problems instead of being proactive.

  9. wat kind of person can say he is impressed with the work of zesco when they are doing nothing but creating caos.Management in zesco has to be changed if we are to see a change and anti-corruption commission please look into the manner in which operations are handled in this organisation

  10. May someone educate ZESCO on the dire need of power at high learning institutions like NRDC which have experiments plus other items that operate on electricity. How do you expect an institution operate without elctricity?

  11. Zescolo and sisala ukutumpisha! why cant this animal called sisala go it has failed the pipo. Is it becoz its chuchu’s relative?
