Lusaka, May 30, ZANIS-The United Nations in Zambia has appointed Zambia’s songbird, Marsha Moyo, as its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) advocate in the country.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony in Lusaka today, UN Resident Coordinator Aeneas Chuma said the UN system in Zambia has appointed Ms. Moyo for the sole purpose of lending greater impetus to the MDGs campaign
Mr. Chuma said personalities in the music, film and arts industry could help raise awareness of key UN activities of fighting poverty, HIV/AIDS and improving the status of women.
Mr. Chuma Ms. Moyo would assist in focusing attention on UN member states’ priorities in the millennium declaration, which has served as the organisation’s guide.
He noted that as spokesperson for MDGs in Zambia, Ms. Moyo would be representing the views of all the thirteen UN agencies resident in the country.
He said the musician would also strengthen the bonds of the UN with the local community by addressing the existing challenges.
And Ms. Moyo pledged to work with the media in raising awareness on various issues concerning the attainment of the MDGs by 2015.
She called for community involvement, saying the progress in attaining the goals could only be accelerated when every citizen was involved.

Can someone please tell me what marsha moyo has achieved to deserve such a post, because i really dont understand.
How many albums has she released or where does she perform? Does she have the connection with community like bikiloni and diffikoti?
#1 I feel your pain. I don’t even know who she is. This is the first time I am reading about her.
:o i like the music it is incredecle and is lif and i want the music bt i cant find it on the maket o internet wats up
She is one of the Zambian musician making it big in UK and putting Zambia on the Map. She sings soul music with a Zambian touch. #1,2,3. If you don’t know someone it does not follow that they are bad and do not deserve some respect. GO Marsha Moyo carry the Zambian flag with you do not allow these loser bring you down!!!
#4 you said urself, doing it big in the uk..why is’nt she doing it big in Z?i know she is a singer,a skitty one for a fact, but if they wanted to use someone to raise aids awareness amongst ZAMBIANS in ZAMBIA (not the uk),they should use a more established local musician for that, like Danny.Remember the yakumbuyo song?he was raising awareness for things that really happen with guys like you,and the whole country heard!these guys must choose wisely
Get the album “we are the women, we are the girls from home” and she used to sing at the dubai 7 star hotel as a cabaret singer, now tell me how many people have sung there for 7 months. Just check the site a bit more, she is refined I can assure you
Go girl!! who ever you are? Tough responsibility though. Ayi kona kuti sebanya with incompetence. #6 Being refined does not mean she has the calibare to be creative enough in the areas she’s been given advocacy. So, lets wait and see ……………..
She was my classmate from grade 8 -12. She kept our class alive. She’s the type of person you don’t forget easily.Go Marsha. never thought you would become a singer though.
#4”…making it big in the UK”, which part of the UK?
#4, sounds a beneficially.
#9, good question.
Seen her music on Youtube and the African Channel, she is good.
#8 She’s a Form 5
#3. Masha is a duaghter to Stephen Moyo (Former ZNBC Director General). She once worked for Zambia Sugar. She did her studies either in UK or USA. Listen to her speak, you will like her.
well i think maureen lilanda would have been ideal for the post. Not only is she doing it big in zambia, her music has zambian roots. probably even Jane Osborne could have done it. after all she was honoured by the president for promoting zambian culture. by appointing someone who is close to the zambians (unlike masha who i think is too up there)the MDGs would have been brough closer to home even translated into our languages. promoting MDGs abd culture should go alongi havent heard any song done by masha in our languages. i stand to be corrected.
i know of a senegalese singer called coumba gawlo who is also UN ambassador. she sings in senegalese languag
#14 thumbs up!!!
Good Will Ambassadors should not be known in their local areas, The should appeal internationally so as to raise international pubilicity to a cause and in turn raise funds for the cause. It is for this reason that you see american stars travelling to problematic areas in africa with a huge media crew. This is done purely for publicity not awareness to the locals. Bikilone and Diffuculty can raise local awareness of an issues what about the money. This can only be done by someone with internation influnce. UN Zambia am sure is trying to tap donations from Dubai
dear its you,
what about funds? i agree with you. international influence can bring funds but will not implement. and please do not underestimate the capacity and ability of zambians to raise funds for their own good. we just dont have the leadership to ENABLE ZAMBIANS to do GREAT WORKS. ultimately it is us here who have to work to achieve the MDGs. even if bill gates and george bush (may november come tomorrow so that he goes) gave us every dollar, the MDGs will not be achieved if local communities have no idea what they are and why they are so important. believe me there is POWER IN THE PEOPLE which no amount of money can buy. and if you want to inspire people, SPEAK thier LANGUAGE
I strongly believe Zambians should appreciate the fact that one of their kind has been appointed to this noble cause. Constructive Critism is welcome, but unfortunately what is appearing is wrong and should not be intertained.
#18..I agree with you. Why cant Zambians be proud of the few people we have who are appointed by International bodies…regardless of whether they sing in English, Luvale, Tonga etc etc or whether they are based in Zambia or in the Diaspora?
A Zambian is a Zambian.
Welldone Marsha for putting Zambia on the map! We hope you will deliver. Concentrate on the job and ignore the negative people.
I have lived in the uk for 12 years…never heard of Marsha Moyo and I attend a lot of gigs (african)
Marsha is an intelligent, confident woman. Her music is of international appeal that is why her music has been on the billboards in South Africa, USA, France, UAE to mention amongst a few.
She can Sing! Which is something we can not confirm of some of these Zambian singers who just mime.
NO 20: For your information, Marsha was not int he UK, she lived in the USA and she was studying ( She has a Masters in Marketing) however as singing is her passion and God given talent she has decided to sing. And unless you have real good taste in music, you probably will never hear her!
Marsha is an inspiration to alot of us especially those who know her well.I feel blessed to have gone to school with her.International School Of Lsk.
I still recall even then she was already extremely unforgetable.I believe Ms Moyo will shine through for Zambia…
I wish u all the best Marsha…
#8 You are ill informed. Do your research before you comment. Marcha earned her Bachelors Degree from Rutgers University in New Jersey – USA. As for #14 Maureen Lilanda could be okay, but not ideal. You have to appreciate Marsha’s experince and academic background. Some of those you mentions could make good advocates but not ambassodors. Thanks.
