Crocodile kills girl six

Share

A six year old girl has been killed by a crocodile on Lake kariba at Sinalulongwe Fishing Village in Sinazongwe district.

Sinazongwe District Vice Chairperson Fisher Zimana named the deceased as Suzen kazunga who was caught by the crocodile while she was drawing water.

Mr. Zimana said the girl went to draw water with her mother and other family members.

He said when they reached at the Lake some children started swimming in lake while the mother to the deceased was washing plates.

The Vice Chairperson explained that as the girl decided to draw water in a five litre container the crocodile swallowed her.

“The mother tried to rescue the daughter but she failed and went to go and tell the husband, and the following day they only found a leg and a hand floating,” Mr. Zimana said.

He noted that the girl was allegedly caught by the crocodile because of the lack of a borehole at the fishing camp.

The Vice Chairperson expressed worry at the high incidents of crocodiles which were killing people in the district.

He warned parents against sending their children to draw water on Lake Kariba.

Mr. Zimana has made a passionate appeale to Zambia World Life Authority (ZAWA) to crop the reptiles that have become a danger to the people living along Lake Kariba in the district.

In March a family of three people including a pregnant woman was killed by a crocodile in Chiyabi area.

Mr. Zimana said a crocodile jumped into the canoe where the family was in at Jongolo stream, grabbed the woman’s arm, killing one in the process two people died at Maamba Hospital.

  1. Such a sad story! But guess what, not new, its been happening everywhere people are in contact with beasts.

  2. Firstly, I would like to pass my condolences to the family of the Kazunga for the loss of their beloved one.

On “…Suzen kazunga who was caught by the crocodile while she was drawing water”, I am just wondering as to whether the name is actually ‘SUSAN’. Also, on “The Vice Chairperson explained that as the girl decided to draw water in a five litre container the crocodile swallowed her,” I would like to believe that the crocodile did not ‘swallow’ but grabbed ‘Susan Kazunga’ since a leg and something else were found later and swallowing has a connotation of fully engulfing without any other body parts being seen by the eyes of onlookers.

  3. My condolences are also extended to the family of the three deceased people including a pregnant woman.

This news is very, very sad.

Let us seek ways that will help protect people against some of these untimely deaths that appear as if they can be avoided.

  4. My condolences to the families….But LT why do you keep on embarrassing yourselves with grammatical errors.I keep telling you to offer me as the editor in chief of LT or as a proof reader!!!I really need that job so very much.

  5. My condolences to the families….But LT why do you keep on embarrassing yourselves with grammatical errors.I keep telling you to offer a post as the editor in chief of LT or as a proof reader!!!I really need that job so very much.

Why is that we do have stories in Sinazongwe and not any other parts of the Zambia awe bane improve on that area,we are tired of Sinzongwe and Shangombo.

  6. Such events are sad develpements, especially when they occur due to lack of a boreholes that are a requirement for rural dwellers. Can someone find solution to boreholesclean water. Drinking Water directly from the lake river is not safe for these villagers. Appealing to the powers that be to assist the villagers in rural areas with clean water. After all, they would not drink such water themselves or their ” big tummies would run”

  7. truly Zambian. get the crocs in your prefered area to maul someone and then LT will report. the simple answer is that there are no significant happenings in those regions worth reporting. alternatively offer yourself to a reptile and then we shall get to know about it. simple as that. dont complain over non issues. you have many choices to turn to okey.

  8. Indeed it is a sad story!
It fascinates me to note that when a croc or any wild animal kills a person, not much is done by ZAWA. But when one (person) kills such animals, he/she gets apprehended mercilessly. Much emphasis is put on a life of a beast instead of that of a human person. ZAWA pliz crop those beasts before many people can be killed!

  9. Tragedy after tragety in the so called booming economy – no basic utilities for common people!! Shame chuchu and your dinners..

  10. From the look of things its like animals are now all over what is govt and ZAWA doing about it. Too many lives have been lost. Is there a problem of funding?

  11. yaba, human/animal conflict, my heart goes to the family that lost their beloved daughter, this is indeed a very bad occurance

  12. My condolences to the family. Why don’t the goverment help the villiages with the water systems.

  13. #12, 16 & 17.

The reason ZAWA cannot do anything is about human beings dying is because they are not wild animals.

  14. #13 is the “crocodile” that killed our young daugther, niece and a friend. What I mean is that u cannot blame the person you call chuchu for what happened.Even in China the most world wide known economy to be at its pick, there are people like you ,they will never stop criticising their govt.Don’t expect him”chuchu” to instruct Zawa to crop those wild animals cause that has already been delegated to zawa official by constitution

  15. Ministry of transport must buy proper ferry boats for people to travel on than risk lives on primitive canoes! Those crocs surely knows where to get their next lunch from easily… Ey! America and other developed countries also have sharks, alligators, whales etc..but you would never here of such tragic incidence were the goverment let their people get eaten by beasts cuz of luck of safe transport for people to cross on water, when will such small changes which makes big impacts, will ever be considered in Zambia? This is 2008 and zambian people are still using ancient canoes, shuwa? SHAME ON YOU ZAMBIA!

  16. why should we protect beasts? People are killing one another almost every day and court cases take years to be concluded
and at the end we see lighter punishments. For beast one gets
    punished almost immediately.

This sad story is not new and ZAWA has showed little progress in addressing this issue.

Who benefits from these beasts? politicians?

  17. Condolences,This is why GRZ need to sink boreholes.purely this is also how you people need to know who should represent you in your area during elections.

  18. It is so sad. Imagine being in that families place, What a loss. Life will never be the same for them. It makes you wonder, does the Government care ? This little girl is not the first and will certainly not be the last. If only one on the government officials had this happen to them MAYBE they will take it more seriously or will they….. Think about it What can Zawa do? Trap all the crocsodiles? No ! People should not be drawing water from the lake but from a tap or pump. SHAME on those who have the power to make a difference but just sit and get FAT !!!!
