Govt to Re-Tender Independence Stadium Rehab

Share

Government says it has decided to re tender the rehabilitation of the Independence stadium.

Speaking to Journalists in Kabwe today, Works and Supply Deputy Minister Mundia Ndalamei said Government has been prompted to do so due to the high demand by previous contractors.

He explained that Government had set aside K60 billion for the exercise hence it was imperative that a re tender process is conducted because earlier applicants were demanding higher payments.

On the rehabilitation of the Independence stadium, he said Government hoped that the works would be complete before the end of this year.

The stadium has been closed down for rehabilitation following its inability to accommodate huge crowds.

  1. Last time we were told only k100m was set aside now its k60 billion. Come 2012 i still see the stadium being in the same state as it is now!

  2. Levi has failed to construct even a single toilet. If you check nicely, you’ll note that all the structures that have been erected in levi’s years where all sponsored by foreign governments. LEVI IS THE WORST EVER.

  3. Bakikamba imwe can you please show a sense of urgency. Whay are we so beauraucratic in our ways of doing business?

  4. Why waste money pa Ma Kula. Let these chaps qualify for the world cup or win Afcon .

We should build a hospital or buy more state of the art medical machines which would save lives!! The death rate pa Zed is scary to say the least!!

  5. MMD should get the Chinese who have so infested this country to build that stadium ! Instead of concentrating on doing business in Kamwala, let them do something significant in funding the rebuilding of the stadium..

  6. #7 so let us spend more money on Aids drugs and make them more affordable for every Musonda, Mutale, Kabwe!

Zambian soccer is the same crap year in year out. Call pros , go to a tournament lose, fire coach. 44yrs and counting.

  7. #3, How do you expect levy to do everything in one day when your relatives Kafupi, Katele, Aron, Xavier, Stella, Cycle Mata and others swept all the money from Government corffers ?
Come and improve our economy you running fugitive.

  8. Seriously, Whats happenining with the Task Force on Corruption? Why not cut a deal with the plunderers, so that these guys can bring back the moneys which can be used to develop our Zambia, including Nitrogen Chemicals, rebuild roads, stockup drugs in hospitals, pay teachers/nurses/doctors good salaries, and also setting up good prisons.

  9. And Zambia will host the ALL Africa Games in 2011? these guys are playing. hope they will rehabilitate all the stadia in LSK other wise tizasebana. the will accomodate the participants at UNZA Evelyn Hone and NIPA our learning institutions do not have the proper training facilities…Zambia chalilila

  10. Aids has been worsened by the MMD inspired poverty creating policies since 1991.

The soccer stadium saga is nothing but another example of feeble minded leadership and its impotence

  11. e………………………kwena ah. And you are hosting the 2011 all Africa Games suwa!!!!!!!!!!!!! eh pilizi!

  12. WHY NOT JUST RAZE THIS POOR STADIUM DOWN AND ERRECT A NEW ONE, PAY A CHINESE CIVIL CO, AS IT WILL BE CHEAPER BUT OF HIGH STANDARD.HOW LONG CAN U TORTURE THIS PLACE WITH RENOVATIONS.

  13. I bet the Stadium will still be ‘Stable’ come next year.Yaba eeeish!! Though i feel #15 Miyoba is right why not just put a new structure all together.Independo is an old structure.

  14. How amazing GRZ is! No serious plans to date from 1988 when we first failed to host ACN. The circus never ends.

  15. pliz 16 be serious,if those guys bring down independence stadium,it will be another dag in ndola.today we can not see any kwacha they raised through donations and dinner dances for that dag.

  16. #21 Renovating that Stadium is not the solution. If you have been to the Stadium you will agree with me the thing is a ‘death trap’ the two open wings on the Grand Stand used to shake. This is what they renovating. But the open wing has been equally shaky.
If you remember there was a Parliamentary committee that was appointed early this year to see what needed to be done to the stadium. The committee recommended that a new stadium be built.
Yes you might be right by expressing your fear having a repeat of Dag.
But renovations for me is not the right solution.Let Govt talk to the Chinese or something. That stad renovated for All Africa Games wont work.

  17. Govt will need a soccer Stadium with a full track and Field to use for the All Africa Games and the will need proper dressing rooms that the athletes will use for changing and stuff. The also need to put a state of the art media place for different media that will come from all over 50 African nations and international media as well.Parking at Independo is also an issue.
The Govt bid for and agreed to Host the Pan African games so the need to be serious otherwise a renovated Independo will just embarrass us .
dodo i love my country like you do and will always be Zambian.Stuff like this pains me brings pain to me.All the years of independence no proper stadium all we can think of

  18. We should not be talking about Revovating the Indepdnce stadium…rather thrashing the all stadium and building a new one. We need modern stadia…and not just white and red paint, … paint the seat, tree towards the stadium!!! We need to be serious for once as Zambian. Angola come from war… two

  19. Please concentrate on one project and complete it beore embarking on another.we need at least one world class stadium- a nationa stadium we can be proud of.Please dont let us down

  20. We need at least 4 stadia. They promised and they should deliver. I don’t know if GRZ needs to see people demonstrate in towns. That is the only language our gvt understands. Independence stadium should be erected anew and not patching it up like pot holes. As in #22, please follow the committee’s recommendation for a new stadium and disregard the fool that shot down this idea saying it was going to be very expensive as though his mother was going to pay for it. With RSA building theirs, we will be 50 years behind them.

  21. You should know that sport plays a big roll in the development of a human being. Let the government find a right company to build our independence stadium. Imagine we are the only country in Southern Africa without any good infrastructure for sport. Do you think that one day we will host international competitions without infrastructures. Please think about this?

  22. And when Zambia bows out in preliminary rounds the fipubas start complaining blaming either players or coaches. Mwebuteko Chipuba, garbage in, garbage out.

  23. Iwe Miyoba #15, Dag Hammarskjold Stadium was razed down in 1988 and no replacement has been made after 20 years. Zambia Airways was liquadated in December 1994 and almost 14 years to date, Zambia has no national airline to talk about. So razing down Independence stadium is no answer. Take a leaf from UNIP who did not raze down their Freedom house but decided to build a bigger “Freedom House” along Independence Avenue though it was “confiscated” due to UNIP’s insencerity and dubioussness.

  24. Is there need for us to spend those billions on that structure? I think that we wuld rather source for extra funds a raise a new morden stadium. We the Zambians have the patience to wait even another 2-3 years in future.

    Kind Regards to all Zambians

  25. #33 What do you want to rennovate? The grand stands are shaking, Yes we razed dag and we are building one soon, if we continue patching this staduim, I will promise you, this will embarass you as a zambian one day. This staduim will fall and kill people, how many times has it been certified “Un-Safe”, what are you patching? I see you are agreeing building another one is best solution, but where? and what will this staduim remain standing for? A monument?

  26. One other thing I forgot to mention is that these Government officials know very well that contractor who can do a better job will require more than the K60bn so these Government officials will come up with their own small useless companies over-night who will take up the job and put up shoddy / inferior works, by that time our monies will be no more. It’s just a deliberate way of stealing money in front of our very sober eyes. That’s the way I see it going down.

  27. From a cost consultant point of view delaying the renovation of the stadium will not help at all. There is going to be a huge amount of cost accrued as escalation. It’s better to renovate it now than later. If the the structural damage is too severe, a structural advise is required and decisions can be made as to whether it is worth renovating or building a new structure. From my point of view which is based on what I have just read in this thread, I would recommend that the structuraly defective stands be demolished altogether and new ones be built. This may further delay the project and increase design costs but it is very expensive to undertake structural stabilisation on defective work

  28. cont… It would be almost like re-building the whole thing all over again. The structural stabilisation costs may not differ too much from the costs likely to be incurred from building a new stadia.

  29. You are right Lion #40. Talking to many friends in construction here in U.S. remodeling old buildings, they take longer and often prefer a new construction claiming restoration work often costs more and is time consuming. Thick heads in high places can’t “copy” that.

  30. #41 After all demolition is not too expensive. Yea you are right restoration work often costs more and you should bear in mind that it could be anything. It’s very hard to determine the scope of such work before hand..

  31. The story is highly nauseating going by what GRZ has subjected soccer loving funs. We need to pass a vote of no confidence in all of them. Atase.
