Mining affects energy deficit

Share

The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) says increased industrial activity on the Copperbelt has contributed to the energy deficit in Zambia.

ERB Copperbelt Regional Office Manager, Yohane Mukabe says most existing mines are expanding their operations.

He said this is in order to take advantage of the current high price of Copper on the International Market.

Mr. Mukabe said this in Kitwe, Wednesday during the recording of the Energy Conservation Campaign Week programme.

He also said a number of supporting industries to the mines are coming up in the province.

Mr. Mukabe said this is a sign that the Zambian economy is performing well.

And ZESCO Copperbelt Division Manager, Muntungwa Mugala said load shedding is expected to end in March next year.

  1. thats not an excuse.zesco is just an incompetant company just like everything else that has anything to do with government.a growing industry is part of any vibrant economy!!!!

  2. load shedding will not end next year or within our lifetime unless bloody zesco gets its act together. currently we are at full capacity and we have several mines coming on stream next year. because sissala was fired from cec for being incompetent, he is strongly fighting cec from doing any power generation. its amazing that personal conflict can be the basis of holding a whole country at ransom

  3. come on guys we had mines even years back ,you cant tell us that you did not see the big picture,I think the Sisalas of this world lack foresight… which is a very big set back,I can not have property damaged because som…….. didnt calculate,

  4. What job does the Director do? I thought its meant to be strategic planning? In situations like these, this Sisala should have packed his bags and gone to try something else on moral grounds if the employer can’t do what is due to him. Maybe its the fault of government if he did his part but just never got the support he needed. Even then, he should have been professional enough and called it a day.

Lets not be told how incompetent we are. The school you went to surely must have taught you how to plan ahead. Unless your jobs have been to sit in your offices and enjoy the flow of the current. Lets do our jobs as executives for us to be worth the jobs we do.

  5. The biggest problem I see in these guys is that they seem to consider investment as a cost. Sisala and team have failed to foresee the returns if they were procure and install more generators.

If anything, many other areas in Zambia can be developed for hydro-power generation, and I don’t see any impediment in that kind of investment except lack commitment from govt.

  6. Northerns are thiefs that causes tribalism, they should also be reported to animal rights group for eating monkeys!.

  7. This problem is generally due to lack of good planning. This is not only in the energy sector. Who is to blame?
