Kailala ceremony cancelled due to severe hunger

Share

The Kailala traditional ceremony of the Goba speaking people in chieftainess Chiawa ’s area in Kafue district will not take place this year because of acute hunger which has hit the area.

Kailala Traditional and Culture Association (KATCA) Chairman, Isaiah Museto, disclosed the development to ZANIS today.

He said chieftainess Chiawa has already been informed of the development and has since accepted with the traditional council’s decision.

Mr. Museto said the traditional council met last week and resolved that the ceremony, which usually takes place in the first or second week of September every year, could not be held this year because people in area have no food.

He said the Goba people had a poor harvest in the last farming season as such they had nothing to present to their ancestral spirits.

Mr. Museto said the ceremony, which is meant to thank ancestral spirits for the harvest of a particular year, would instead take place next year.

He said the people in the area would have loved to hold the ceremony as usual this year but could not because they had nothing to contribute for the ceremony to succeed.

And Mr. Museto has disclosed that the wild animals have continued to cause terror among villagers in the area.

He said elephants were destroying the little crops, which villagers had cultivated along river banks, a situation which has worsened the hunger situation in the area.

He has since appealed to government to send relief food to the area in order to prevent people from starving to death.

  1. how do you people survive?on relief food evry year or what?do you just specialise in banana growing?its so embarrassing …thank God I don’t belong to such a tribe…

  2. #1 WENKUSA WHE..YO FATHER MUST BE ONE OF THOSE STIPID MINISTERS WHO HAVE NEGLECTED SMALL TRIBES AND WANT BIG A#$ SALLARIES.. I BET U JUST READ THE HEADLINE WITHOUT READING THE FULL STORY.. BELENNGA ILYASHI WEBO.. PAMENSO!!!

  3. Mudala Nchelelebula its not thier making that the Goba people experience poor harvests. If you have bn to the Gwembe Valley North popularly known as lower Zambezi you will agree with me that this is an area prone to adversey whether conditions. The banana growers you are refaring to are not actually Gobas they are the Nawakwis or may be even you who have the technology to manupulate mother nature which you dont want to share with the have not. Instead ya kubafubazya bantu aba lets help them.

My hope is that who ever takes over from our late President will dedicate his stay at state house to empower such people.

  4. Its very discouraging to hear stories like about your people. Gobas area a very small tribe and almost non-existant as far as the government is concerned. Goba sounds very much like Shona and its very easy to mistake a Goba for a Shona. The Chieftainess on the other hand has abondoned its people and now stays in Lusaka while getting paid a tribal salary by the government.

  5. True #5. Let the ancestral spirits know that you starving. If you skip till next, they will think you had a big harvest this year and forgot about them. And when next year comes, they might even be more angry at u and could impose worse conditions.

  6. The problem with most of us Zambians who come from small tribes have an inferiority complex and dont want to associate themselves with their origin. Kandoko I tell you even in the government the Gobas are there but pretending they are Chewas or Ngonis from the east insted of fighting for what is rightfully theirs as Zambians. Guys if you are well positioned in the highrack of authority always remember your roots and you will be blessed.

  7. I thought ‘kailala’ means ‘kwilala’, as in not having food to eat for supper. If it is so then this is the right time to have the ceremony so that the spirits ‘bakailale’ and know that there is nothing to eat this year, so that next year they will bring forth plenty.

    muramo please comment.

  8. This chiefteness Chiawa woman is greedy. She gets all the royalties from the Lower Zambezi National Park and makes herself fat while her people starve. She must take a leaf from chief Mukuni. His area is equally bad but his people never ask for relief food. Government must start auditing these traditional leaders.

  9. #5 very funny but true. but they can also sacrifice even the little they have. havent they heard of that woman in the bible who sacrificed the little and only coins she had? she didnt wait to have more. am sure the ancestors will understand and appreciate the little. they say its the thought that counts.

  10. Point of correction, Kailala is not supposed be a traditional Ceremony for the Goba’s but for the SOLI’s and this is why that chiefdom has been facing alot of HUNGER problems. Chiyawa is a soli chieftdom and not Goba. The ancestral spirits are very anoid with what chieftainess Chiyawa did by deliberately changing the meaning of this function simply because she has links with the Goba people. Those who know history will agree with me on this point. I therefore appeal to Mr Isaiah Museto, KATCHA chairman to correctly advise the chieftainess to change her stance on this issue for the sake of the people. If she doesnt know history, let her consult me. Iam ready to guide her for free…….

  11. This situation exists all over rural Zambia. It’s time government encourage reformation of co-operatives. We must know that not everything should be run on purely capitalist principles. People need foundation in sustainable development and it starts with government acknowledging unique problems faced by each region and coming up with solutions to be implemented and followed through.

  12. I am sorry too, though I thought the reason was because of the funeral that we have right now as a country. Anyway………………….maybe next year!

  13. stop giving people relief food instead give them fertilizer ,you see what is happening now what if the same happens next year, that means they never be traditional ceremonie in that area.

  14. what can the govt do if the same pipo are given imputs and sell them @ the end????????????????

  15. Your highness, its time you changed and revert back to roots of your Chiefdom. As for now, you have been cursed by your ancestral spirits. You are a traditional leader who should not throw away your cultural morms. Your subjects are wallowing in hunger while you are busy enjoying in wealth from royalties.
If you really know how you found yourself on that seat, then get back to your traditional ethics and do the needful. If you dont know what to do since you were very young when we crowned you, come back and see us the elders (Ba bala). We shall guide you or else your chiefdom is destined for calamity.

  16. Don’t tell us to whom you sacrifice because some of us don’t believe in these spirit that don’t intervene to give its people food when there is hunger. Infact you can have two ceremonies next year if you will have food then. Let them not sacrifice wild animals, they are not for spirits, they are for God. And why don’t you just abandon them for God.

  17. Your highness, in case you have lost your senses because of those boat cruises you go for. The soli people have five chiefs namely Nkomeshya, Mpanshya, Shikabeta, Bundabunda and Chiyaba. Its surprising that you now claim to be GOBA. How ? The Original chief Chiyaba Muyowe, a pure soli and brother to the first chief Bundabuanda of the soli people was not a Goba. Even those that succeeded thereafter were not Goba’s but Soli’s.
House of chiefs, i wonder if you are away of this abnormally? When we finish mourning our head of state, let this selfish traditional leader be reminded. No wonder she has abundoned her subjects and chiefdom.

  18. Do we have such a tribe in Zambia. The chieftainess is lavishing while her people are starving. Shame on you

  19. Yawe nchelelebula!! what kind a comment is that. I wonder how managed to use internet. That is a thought an educated person. Shame to ur fellow tribe.

  20. iwe mukamoonga, ino yebo uyeeya kuti swebo nkotuzwa tupona buti?tulalima mudala…aabo bantu mbatolo alimwi akunywa makoko kapati…i have a heart and feeling ambebo…mucende wacuundu mudala….

  21. #23, Mwaiche, Oko wafuma kwaliba INTAMBI, so always remember that. Cultural traditions have got origins and meanings. As such you cant do away with them. You sound to be negative about the whole issue simply because you have been brain washed by the western culture. Dont forget where you come from because your children will be lost.
With due respect, chieftainess Chiyawa risks being dethroned if she does not revist her actions. We can not accept to have traditional leaders becoming so irresponsble when they are supposed to be role models. This is a work-up call for her. After national mourning, she will see…….

  22. Our Chieftainness has really let us down. She has sold off all the land that is on the river front to lodges at high prices and has invested all that money in her Makeni home and businesses in Lusaka. Look her at the Palace, surely should we continue watching such squalor?! We the people of Chiyaba should should hard, how come the others are making it in the same area we say is drought prone..Zambeef, Nawakwi, Chakanaka, Kanyemba…all this investment in our area? If its not floods, its drought, if not drought its wild animals..Mr. Museto lets get serious

  23. I have been to the ceremony. Its nothing special. Whats interesting is basically the gifts people bring to the Chief. The rest of the stuff is ordinary dancing. Infact when i was there in 2006, a drunk girl holding a castle bottle danced far much better than the so called traditional dancers. The felt jealous and evicted her from the stage after she begun winning applause from the somewhat bored audience that included the former French Ambassodor Saunderly. It thus makes no difference.

  24. what is being said about the small tribe and leaders and the history is true. It is just unfortunate that people of influence who know these things have been quiet. down there for us who work with the locals is a shameful story. why did the solis allow this in the first place. come to Chiawa people and you will realise the harsh realities of what is being said and more. 14 you are so right, 2 invstigate and research u will find out.

  25. I AGREE WITH 31, NOTHING SPECIAL HAPPENS THERE, I THINK THE MUSETOS MUST RETHINK THE RATIONALE OR STORY LINE OF THE CEREMONY REAL HARD OR BETTER YET ASK NUMBA CONCERNED, HE SEEMS TO KNOW ABOUT ITS STORY LINE

  26. Fellow bloggers, i want to appreciate the comments of #33 and 34. When we are through with our National mourning, i will be readily available to give more information on the History/Origin, Cultural and Traditional practices and beliefs of Chiyawa Chiefdom(Soli). Something terribly went wrong especially after the current Chieftainess was crowned as chief. Why is it that the chiefdom has faced alot of these problems only during her reign ?
As for #30 MUGURAMENO, i will start by reminding you that you are an immigrant (as indicated by your name) from Zimbabwe. Your forefathers were allowed to settle there during the liberation wars, and as such i doubt if you know your history properly.

  27. If anything, Kailala is not even a Goba name. In Goba we dont use the letter l but r. Mugurameno could you contact me when u get a chance? I think your are my cousin of some sort.

  28. #37, i will rebuke you after the National mourning. But remember that you (Goba’s) will not hijack Kailala or Chiyaba chiefdom from us (Soli’s). Prepare your defence…………..

  29. #38 My friend I care less about being a Goba or Soli. I know I have to follow Goba traditions but I am just a happy Zambian. I can stay anywhere in Zambia and I dont have a problem with it.

  30. Iam alarmed and concerned that in 2008 people are still talking in terms of tribe. What is important is that we are all Zambians and should stay united; instead of bickering about tribal origins.

  31. #40 Kandoko and #41 Konikalubuli, i promised to respond and iam back. I changed my name bcoz someone is using that identity.
#41 Konikalubuli, my advice is dont involve yourself in matters that do not concern you. You have alot of ceremonies in Luapula nad Northern provinces, so talk about those or indeed take your Lubuli there.
Dont expose your shallow mindedness on this blog simply bcoz you are in the diaspora. Why do we still teach history at schools in Zambia ? If you cant trace your origins, blame yourself and stay away from this topic……….

  32. # 40 Kandoko, justify your claims that KAILALA is for the Goba’s and not Soli’s ? You HIJACKED our ceremony and it is time we got it back. Remind your Chieftainess and her bad advisors that time has come for us to get what belongs to us….

  33. can someone please give me information about this Kailala ceremony. Am doing a play with my school about trad ceremonies from all the 9 prov of Z.
want to know, the origins of the ceremony
presiding chief, what really happens, the music, dances, food etc.

Could you also give me some soli or goba names to use in my play. thanks.

  34. my cousin is related to chieftainess chiyawa.i cant believe the ceremony has been cancelled my cousin goes to it. i have never been there.
