Laying of wreaths will be restricted – Dr. Kanganja

Share

Government has advised dignitaries, officials and members of the public that will attend the burial ceremony of the late President Mwanawasa scheduled for tomorrow not to bring wreaths to the burial site.

Secretary to the Cabinet Dr. Joshua Kanganja said only identified dignitaries and some family members will be accorded an opportunity to lay wreaths.

Dr Kangaja said this in a media statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today.

He however said members of the public will have access to Embassy Park and are free to lay their wreaths from the 4th September until the end of the national mourning period.

The late Dr. Mwanawasa, who died on 19th August in Paris, France, is expected to be put to rest tomorrow at Embassy Park opposite cabinet office in Lusaka.

Over a dozen heads of state and several other foreign dignitaries are expected to attend the burial ceremony for the late President Mwanawasa.

  1. Muli amano muliyo. We all cant go to lay wreaths there. Am only happy that dancers and troops wont be beating drums to earn a bag of ubunga na kanama kakoca.

  2. Fya umfwika mudala. we respect, but organise for orninary zedians to place their wreaths within the roundabout in front of cabinet ?

  3. Awe ba Kanganja mwa sova. We cant all do it at the same time. But what happens after the mourning period? because you chaps are funny. You keep changing statements time and again. I hope you have sat down with your friends and fully discused this not mailo tuka sebanye again ku sungu.

  4. If they allow everyone to be there, there will be total confusion. This is good after all you can go there anytime and see his resting place.

  5. Not a bad idea that, it’s obvious anyhow not all Zambians can flower the coffin with wreaths. One thing worth mentioning is the “what next factor “, can’t wait for the burial to see how “wolves” will scamper in all directions gnashing their jaws on who is gona be MMD President. One thing MMD doesn’t appreciate is that it is not automatic for whoever is picked by NEC will become the next Zambian President. Far from that and we’ve seen that 17 thousand candidates, going by the population have opted to be MMD President, shame. Democracy yes but a misplaced one for sure. Just shows how divided they are and thus a negative impact they gona bring to government as whole. One Zambia,One Nation.

  6. Maybe they should take the earth from embassy park round the country so mourners can touch it then bury. After that they can dig up the whole grave then take it round the country so we can all lay wreaths!!

  7. One would wonder ifya kucita uyu slow down- u r posting to fast…mulefwaya mbike ukuboko mu slow motion mwaaa…Natendwa.

Twalamonako abaale budgetela -Anione anione ulu babakanya ukuya nama luba..ehhhee.No voice of recognition..BIG UP.Protocol has to be observed.

  9. Am one person who used to value the Post Newspaper, can someone tell me what happened to this paper? It used to be so objective and it spoke for the masses, but now it has become Maureen’s mouthpiece, even when Malupenga was in France, he did not even bother to ask Maureen how the President was, he just asked her on her welfare!

  10. Am posting too slow now…Now the president will be put 2 rest…Akalaanda ku menso na matwi yesuu… pantu ifyo yalaba exposed to,efyalafula.May God Guard us through it all.Amen.

  11. Finally he will rest….
LMP you have really left he vacuum in MMD, these fools are all confused and cant even make the right decision as to who should suceed.

  12. please lusaka times i hope you are monitoring some of these postings.May the Grand Champion Of The Eagle finally rest in the arms of the Almighy. What a symbolic resting place.

  13. Good idea, let the public use the money for buying flowers as a donation to unza or uth or any local hospital. fimafulawers fyalabola and thats just a waste of money if everyone bought some

  14. Its a good idea but people can lay wreaths along the road that is more than enough they dont need to put them on the site. At least that way the council workers will have some work to do when clearing the street.

  15. Come on guys why do you want to us spend more on transport, fuels and mineral water plus on wreaths.lets us just use our TV lisence fees to use those zesco may load shed.Already we have been abused on our tax payers cash.NOT ANY MORE

  16. Muezize hande for Kanganja otherwise nekukaba sitakili ni siimpiti kwa embassy park. LPM MYRIP

  17. According to Zambia Daily Mail, Kufour of Ghana is attending the burial with a 20 man delegation and Mugabe with 30. This is all nice to hear and we feel very honored. In such circumstances can someone tell me which government bears the cost? I say so because according to the article GRZ claims to have already taken care of the accommodation arrangements of the foreign heads of states. 15 have already confirmed attendance by the way. I wish their delegations were not so large so that a few more Zambians could maybe then get the much coveted invitation card. GRZ you have had 2 weeks to plan so please no embarrassments tomorrow like ‘lizards causing power failure’

BA MASEBO MWASHUPA MADAM ABOUT UR LATE HUSBAND.

  19. Zesco please, malight are needed on this day to cover this event!!!Don’t restrict us to invitations….(loadshedding)

  20. #17 remember the old adage – “when you sup with the devil, you become the devil.” Perhaps herein is what has happened and though the spotlight is on Magande the thrust may lead to a Maureen republican vice presidency and later presidency in 2011. Just watch the coming days because God has his way of doing things. Any way, let Levy be buried in peace.

  21. LT,I HAVE LIKE MANY ZAMBIANS BEEN FOLLOWING WITH KEEN INTEREST THE EVENTS WHICH FOR THE LAST TWO MONTHS GRIPPED THE CORE OF MOTHER ZAMBIA(I.E. THE ILLNESS & UNTIMELY DEMISE OF LPM).DURING THIS PERIOD WE HAD RUMOURS AND TRUTHS BEING FLUNG AT US FROM ALL QUARTERS INCLUDING THE DIPLOMATIC CIRCLE.

ONE SUCH ITEM THAT STICKS OUT IS THE REPORTED COMMENTS OF ONE VERY OUTSPOKEN ROBERT GABRIEL MUGABE.
HE SUPPOSEDLY EXPRESSED DISSAPOINTMENT OVER THE NEWS IN JULY WHEN THE NATION AND WORLD AT LARGE WAS INFORMED OVER THE NEWS THAT LPM WAS STILL ALIVE IN A PARIS MILITARY HOSPITAL.

THE PORTION OF HIS COMMENT THAT STILL IRKS ME IS QUOTE “I WOULD LIKE FOR LPM TO TEACH ME HOW TO CHEAT DEATH”END QUOTE.

  22. RESTRICTING OF WREATHS FROM THE PUBLIC IS THE RIGHT MOVE AS WE HAVE BEEN ACCORDED ACCESS TO THE PARK FROM THE 4TH ONWARDS.

LET’S GIVE THOSE FROM OUTSIDE OUR BORDERS A CHANCE TO BID THEIR COLLEAGUE FAREWELL WITHOU CROWDING!!

  23. #39

I WAS MERELY ASKING IF ITS RIGHT FOR HIM TO BE HERE!AFTER ALL EVEN PEOPLE IN THE UK SAY IT WAS AIRED ON ALJEZEERA.

  24. Is it really true Mugabe is attending the burial with his delegation? Somehow, i partly blame the stress which LPM had which consequently led to his death on him.Shame on him, because he made very bad remarks after Levy suffered the stroke. He shouldn’t be allowed to attend the burial. Besides we never heard a message of condolences from him unless if am the only one who never heard the message of condolences?

  25. While we are at it, can someone please advise former first lady not to cause a scene tommorrow by chasing away Mugabe from the funeral procession.

  26. Troubled Zambian (41)I share your sentiments, but I guess it is not a matter of right a wrong. If Mugabe can have the audacity to attend Levy’s burial no-one can prevent him from attending. It was an personal decision for him to make based on his ethics and morality, but then we all know that when it comes to Mugabe there are no morals or ethics to talk of. Lets hope Maureen will not be provoked by his presence also as she was by Sata’s in Chipata. Or since we are told attendance is strictly by invitation we can assume he has been invited!!!

  27. People please, we can not blame LPM’s death on Mugabe, it was his time to die thats all. You can not tell me that this was his first illness, he did not die before now because it was not his time, Mugabe issues or no Mugabe issues, the man would have still died. Just sit down and think, he got the best medical attention you can ever need but alas he still left us. It was his time, nothing more nothing less.

  28. Irregardless of what he(Mugabe) said, vengeance belongs to God. I can only hope they wont be a Tom and Jerry scenery tomorow.

On a second thought, Let’s not insult our friend Lubinda on his comments. Given last weeks scenario, He’s trying to find space for Sata, who i think by today has not been given an invitation card.

What a sad development, Barred to witness in person a burial for a new found friend.

  29. #46

    i agree with you.
all in all, we should all be thankfull to the ALMIGHTY for the calm atmosphere we are blessed with during this period.
Zambia u truly are a blessed nation and a beacon on the African continent

  30. The restriction of laying of wreaths is just in order. Not all people can make it on the same day. Condolences messages are enough than wreaths. May Levy’s soul rest in eternal peace.

  31. IT;s alarming ;;;;;;where is MPOMBO of all the people. He is too quite can LT get some information from him for posting on the WEBSITE regarding his uncle dearth i know MPOMBO IS STABLE.

  32. lets call a spade a spade!
the last few days the papers have provided us with more drama than passions, survivors or Bupilo(soap operas)combined.people have spoken out of place on issues like succession.Honestly if we were to wait till after the burial, would the country have ground to a halt surely?
Maureen is a former first lady, hence tommorrows programme is mainly for visiting heads of state. She should not be allowed to take centre stage as the constitution does not recognise a first lady but a “widow” is what her status will be and no-one can take that from her so no more political comments from her please

  33. Attention everyone!! There will be property grabbing at State House. For further information contact George Mpombo. infact that answers your question no. 56

  34. on a lighter note!

    #59

nice one.please if you get there first remember the little impalas are mine.the reason they survived so long is becoz the first prez was vegitarian

  35. As we look at the is of laying wreaths we also need to take note of what the Post Newspapers says about MAGANDE:
According to POST Newspaper of today – 02-09-2008, Silvia Masebo says she supports the wishes of late president over Magande.
She says Mwanawasa prefered Magande, but he told her that Magande had strengths and weeknesses.
She states that, Mwanawasa gave her an assignment to reduce the weaknesses of Magande.
She reveals that from time to time the president would ask her on the progress she made in reducing Magande’s weaknesses.
However, she has not revealed the weaknesses and how far she gone in reducing such weaknesses.

  36. I am of the school of thought that believes the Family Tree have had their chance and its time for other people to take over. Change is good and I can see that change which change will only be tangible if we usher in a new Party come November. If Magande comes, the Family Tree continues, if RB comes, he is too soft and will still be manipulated by Maureen coz mark my word you will see how she’ll change camps as soon as she sees RB being nominated. I believe this is time for PF and I can even see a whole new Cabinet!
As for Mpombo, he has not yet gotten over criticising Dr Chituwo in the press and a week later the president dies!

  37. Can someone with information shed more light, is it true that the First Widow slapped Dr Chituwo in Paris, France for being nosy and inquisitive?

  38. I personally feel that it’s high time we put the body of our beloved president to eternal peace. Until tomorrow, I feel that his soul is not yet rested until its returned to dust. the marathon display of his remains made me feel uncomfortable really, especially when we say “put to rest) meaning burying.

    MHSRIEP.

  39. #63, it can true. That woman has really shown us her true colours in just a short period of time from the time her husband died. Katwishi if the elder children will be given anything of their father’s estate.

  40. Maureen is tired I bet. She cant wait for the funeral to end. The woman has had enough of tears. Hope she remains calm tomorrow and atleast show grief for once so that the invited guests atleast go with a sorry story and not how she has protrayed herself in the recent past. Surely, even the interview she had days ago, should not have taken place as time is just not right.
Does anyone know where LPM`s first wife is? hope she doesn`t need to be invited for the funeral. Maureen can be tricky at times you know.

  41. #68.surely u jest, maureen is as emotional u will ever hope 2 find ha.rumour has it she stoppd mai guru 4rm going round the country with the body, the post has cleverly bin sayin lpm left a wife & 6 children.maureen is a diva & far as shes concernd 2morows ha show.remember how she wud behave wen cutting the independence cake @ state house?

  42. No problem because wreaths can be laid anytime or day after burial. But BEWARE! Keep Lusaka clean. Zambians are too loving. City council, be ready to clear the withered wreaths before an arsonist does it for you.

  43. I have learned from the media that being poor is a blessing especially when you die despite the cheap coffin from mtendre market. THE POOR WILL DIE WITH DIGNITY… MONENI EFYO INFWA YA BA MWINE MUSHI YAASALUKA.. AWE KANDE IKALAFYE NA PUPWE WANDI NO BUNGA BWA MALE..

  44. Iliko liko maino. Iliko tight pa zed sept 3rd. Finally ndimba-nbimba
on-on this weekend. KAALE ama pint muma duducha joints!

    Mwapya munzi

  45. Chabipa kuli shikulu ulya ufumine ku chipata ne njinga just to attend the burial for the late president, with this invitation cards. 48hrs from chipata ne njinga mwaume he deserve to attend the burial.

  46. Makes sense, because otherwise they would need to bury Levy in a stadium, for everyone to be able to lay a wreath. Some of them made out of plastic! lol.

  47. Napapata sana, tell Sylvia Masebo not to attend the burial. If she collapses a third time, we will be referring to her in the past tense. Ati kwenze ba Masebo. Tinali nabo.
