A Chinese mining company plans to invest $2 billion in new mines which will be the biggest investment by a private Company in the history of Zambia.

Zhonghui Mining Industry Zambia Limited plans to open new mines in Luapula and North Western Provinces, complete with a hydropower station and water supply system.

Company President, Chalres Shi said the firm also plans to set up a new city in the North-Western Province.

He however appealed to government for a prospecting licence before embarking on the project.

Mr. Shi was speaking at the headquarters of Zhonghui International Mining Group in Beijing when he met Commerce Minister, Felix Mutati. Mr. Mutati said Government will consider the project by the Chinese company, after studying the proposal in detail.

  1. yes they are welcome but the must be taxed accordingly
for the benefit of all zambians .Government must have at least
51% shareholding. There personel who come to work here must also
be made to sign an agreement that they can only have one child
as it is in their country. We just dont wat to many of them as they are prolific breeders!

  2. i hope the govt will also restrict the number of foreigners coming with such “investors”. coz our graduates remain on the streets while we are told the country is developing and getting more investments. we want to see real development not only on paper.

  3. They are worse than boers. Be very careful with little people, they aint charitable organizations, they are actually investers.

  4. I am more comfortable with South African investors than Chinese or Indians. Sata please we need you to save us from MMD and these Asians, please!

  5. Stop being racist. This is wonderful news indeed. There is the $300 million Pepsi plant in the works as well. We might just achieve our 2030 goal

  6. Even though I am half optimistic and half pessimistic about this deal, I will have to say I don’t know.

I am optimistic because it is about time Zambia had another city besides Lusaka. I am tired of Lusaka, can we please have another City.

Ndola or Kitwe do not qualify as cities, they are just too small.

I am however pessimistic because I don’t think this city is meant for Zambians and I might see some civil unrest. Zambians, no xenophobia if you get a growing Asian population. I am however for multi-culturalism. If you look on this blog, most of the people are not even in Zambia so why shouldn’t Asians emigrate to Zambia when Zambians can emigrate to UK, Canada and Australia. [tbc]

Do you see the double standard.

Stop being racist. It is time we had chinese-Zambians.

We already have Indian Zambians and the latest statistic I saw is Zambia has a white population of 120,000 people (even though I don’t really see them unless I go to Manda Hill).

I welcome the Chinese, I am just scared of xenophobia and Civil unrest.

  8. No need to worry about jobs for engineers, for as long as the skills can be found in Zambia immigration will not give permits to those not deserving, be rest assured, we have one of the most strict immigration in the world. LOL! As for Xenophobia… mmmh, not Zambians, we are not cut out from that xenophobic tree.

  9. Wants a soho!! Yay china town in NW!! And I tell you now, if you vote for Sata, my dreams of eating duck in NW won’t come true…is that what you want, to shatter a good doctor’s dreams mmmmh!

  10. it will definitely be china town!!! with all the chinese-coloured kids that they’ll leave behind!! hope they are taxed to the max though…

  11. Well they seem to be helping with the stabilization of the economy so once again…go china town!!! and i look forward to my chinese coloured kids…oh i’ma hump some of them!

  12. Do you guys know anything about a company called Huawei Technologies and their projects in Zed?I think you should find out.

The most important thing is to be smart in every dealing you have.It doesn’t have to be Nigerians,Whites or Asians, even when we are dealing with Zambian companies. The gvt has to create policies which will protect the locals from being exploited.

In China, all these huge multinationals are forced to make joint ventures with Chinese firms so that they can withdraw at will.

It’s just unfortunate that we have loads of people in decision making positions who can’t think.

  13. Bibo. I know Huawei is one of the biggest if no the biggest telecommunicaitons equipment provider in the world. They are currently supplying MTN Zambia, ZAMTEL, The Vodafone Group (which includes Vodacom in SA), Ghanatel, the list is endless.

They are big timers and it is moronic to demean the Chinese, in as much as they do have shoddy business men (like we do in Zambia) they have some very serious investors and $2 billion is not a laughing matter for any economy.

  14. Could Mutati pause for a minute and say how these billions of dollars of investment are actually benefiting Zambia. The poverty levels are still very high and this was one issue that the late LPM worried about. His friend Magande also keeps yapping about the economy when the majority are still wallowing in poverty.Something is wrong somewhere.

  15. hope they come around coz we definately need a new city so lusaka can be dicongested a little bit…only way we can win this battle is getting them to invest all the money they make in zed as oppposed to taking it out…like its been goin on before
how come no one brings up the topic of how the government let one certain company own 100% of a copper mine that is to become africa’s biggest copper mine…???

  16. We can not live those human rights violators to stay for 70years without paying tax again.Let them tell us how they will improve the lives of our people,.
Up to now they have not built the saw called ultramodern stadium, they killed our people @ Bilgreem and now they want to bring a city of cheap and poor quqlity staff.Another shame.

  17. North-Western province for sell ,$2 Billion. Seriously we should not get too exited by the large figures ,the government should ensure that the Zambian workers are not exploited in these mines, we don’t want alot of these chinese coming in the name of them being more qualified the the zambian worker. this town will stay for years so we have to monitor the standards of the infrastructure they put up it should not be a made in china type of town.

  18. watch out for china town filthness. they’re are running from floods and deforestation. Why should the chinese build news city without grz?

  19. Kukabwata twachula na load shedding mwe bantu. Lilya kwali Ba Mwanawasa efilyako baleshinja shinja ukwakushimya nomba awe nilonsefye amalaiti kuya shila bushiku.
