Does Luck exist?

Share

If a man is lucky, there is no telling the possible extent of his good fortune. Throw him into the Zambezi River and he will swim out with a diamond in his hand.

The desire to be lucky is universal. We all hope to be favored by the whimsical goddess of Good Luck. Is there a way we can meet her and attract not only her favorable attention, but her generous favors?

This is what Kamwandi Nyakalenda wanted to know.

There was going to be a businessmans meeting at the Edingburgh Hotel in Kitwe. Kamwandi, just had to be there. Rumor had it a wise rich man, whom everyone called Uncle Alfred was going to be there. He was one of the tycoons of Kitwe. At such forums people were free to talk to Uncle Alfred like an equal.

As the sun rose to light up the Chingola skyline, Kamwandi boarded the minibus that would take him to Kitwe. Ironically today he felt lucky, there were only about 10  big trucks on the way and journey to Kitwe was much quicker. Traveling from Chingola to Kitwe was a nightmare, with all the trucks on the road.

“I hope the next president builds us a dual carriage way,” Kamwandi thought.

When he arrived at the Edingburgh Hotel the meeting had already started and Uncle Alfred seemed to be in  the middle of answering a political question.

“RB is not popular and seems to have skeletons from his past, he is associating with people Levy sacked for example VJ and Chitala and some obscure political parties. He is not charismatic and his only chance is a sympathetic vote for Levy but Levy is slowly going into history.

HH is young and vibrant but hasn’t got the mass support that his predecessor Mazoka commanded. He will get the “young” and intellectual vote but I doubt if the rural vote cares for intellect.

SATA – is an effective mobiliser and speaks boldly and  undiplomatic at times for the common man and is rightly or wrongly seen as a man of action. He is quite old and has had a heart problem recently so some may not wish for another state funeral too soon.He has not campaigned in the rural areas where he lost in 2006 and this could also be his undoing.

On the balance of probabilities, unfortunately Sata may be the winning horse.” Uncle Alfred concluded.

“What else shall we discuss this morning?” uncle Alfred asked the 50 businessmen gathered in the conference room of the hotel. Kamwandis heart was beating fast; this was his only chance to voice what had been heavy on his heart.
He cleared his throat and said “I have a subject I would like to hear discussed yet hesitate to say lest it seems ridiculous to you my fellow businessmen.”

“Mwaiche landa fye,” Big Jo shouted from the back of the room.

“Well this week I have been lucky. Among other things I found an envelope with K500 000. To continue to be lucky is my greatest desire. I suggest we debate how to attract good luck that we may discover ways it can be enticed to one.”

“Gentlemen an interesting topic has been offered,” Uncle Alfred commented, “one most worthy of our discussion. To some men, good luck is a chance happening, that like an accident may come upon one without purpose or reason. Others believe that the instigator of all good fortune is the gods, who are ever anxious to reward with generous gifts those who please them. Speak up, gentlemen, what do you say, should we seek to find if there is a way by which good luck may be enticed to visit each and every one of us? Does luck exist? What do you think?

  1. Personally the story sounds more like lady luck visited Rupiah in the manner that he was picked by the late president. No one is to know what was going to happen but from being on a farm to VP and standing candidate for presidency just after 2 years in office thats luck at its highest and i am sure Mr Banda feels like a very lucky man if luck is still on his side(lady Luck) he will also rule for 2 years and should step aside because he would have reached the highest level and his luck will run out as it always does.

  2. I think stories like these are strange

Get an Indian we are better lovers ask loads of women, in Lusaka
they keep coming back to me why?

    our manhood, we are SWEET

  3. This story is trash. The author has failed one crucial test. He has not given the conclusion. So what do you want us to discuss. The three presidential hopefuls, the seminar at edinburg or this uncle of yours. This is a trash story i repeat

  4. I don’t know which school some of you people went to.The story stops where it does to allow intelligent people to discuss ways in which to attract luck to themselves.Obviously the intellects have knocked off and I’m left alone to blog with you guys.So here goes- preparation + opportunity = luck. Beat that if you can.

  5. Maybe there is also a question in the story do we base decisions on luck or purely supported by facts??
Its a fact you should have a plan but because you never know what mother nature has planned there should be an element of luck aswell.
You can be a very organised person but without luck some times things just fall apart Bill Gates is where he is today with some element of Luck the fact is the guy had an idea but he didnt see it unfolding as it has done over several years. Making the right decision at the right time with lady luck on your side anything is possible do not be afraid to take a chance when opportunity knocks.
    # 6 you maths equation is quite correct

  6. MAy luck doesn’t even exist, Its just a matter of working hard. And read to have a plan B of everything. I disagree with no; 6. preparation + opportunity = result. resultds can be bad or good, depend on how hard you worked, thank you all thats what I think, correct me if am wrong

  7. #6 You simply are opening yourself up to ridicule. Obviously you think you know it all – have you ever considered that yes (1)chance happens to all? But also that there are (2)spiritual laws that bring favour depending on how one obeys them? and now coming to what you call luck – its simply what #9 has tried to state, though I suggest something else ( its success). Its preparation + work + opportunity = success. Let your small tries be done with a bigger picture (vision) in mind—thats preparation; do not be discouraged if things do not work out the first time, do it again (thats work); and obviously you need to understand times and know when to do things (that’s opportunity).

  8. Good luck comes to many but what makes us different is the ability to maximise opportunities that matter. I think RB would be a good Author of ‘maximising opportunity – RBz experience’. Opportunity found him ready and he has taken his chances well.

  9. luck is there.afta failed relationships, i stumbled upon a nice man.not only is he nice but also rich.i travel with him to his country of origin (india)am just a simple person but am very happy.

  10. Good luck come to maby but it depends with the situations and the direction it is coming from.

Good luck can visit you, but if you don’t know how to use it, it will be for nothing. In the Baha’i faith we say. You can only receive God’s confirmations through making efforts. By this Simple quotation, i mean, You can’t just receive good Luck while sited, instead, a little something need to be seen before good luck comes your way. Even in the Bible, it is written God help those who help themselves.

Rupiah has been a cader since the UNIP era, and thats why Kaunda offered him the posotions he was holding. and in the MMD, Mwanawas hand picked him, simply because he made a little efforts.

  11. No;13 India again, do not talk about india here, this a Zambian blog. and its for Zambians only, we are the people who understand what every simple zambian goes through. Indians are in Zed not invest but to make theiir livings

  12. no 15. pliz am just talking about my situation. am not ashamed to express myself.my husband is a full time investor here in zambia.he has taken care of me and all those close to me.i have all i ever dreamt of.all am saying is that luck comes even when you least expect it.

  13. “luck” can be perceived as a “miracle” too.
It definitely exists and its something that can not be acquired, predicted nor foreseen.

  14. I agree Chance happens to them all.Ecclesiastes 9:11.
People from the east were called wise because of their abilities to interprete times. I want to difine Luck as the ability to interprete the times and make good use of them.
They also say opportunity comes once or never yes, we all have had opportunities in one way or the other. What determines where we are is what decisions we made when opportunites availed themselves to us.
Biblicaly luck is favour which is not fair at all.

  15. #19 I some how don’t agree with you and if opportunity only comes once. Well then mine hasn’t come yet and as for never (I don’t think so) I will get it whether it likes it or not…..

  16. Off topic. please forgive me. those who want to diss me go aheard but i want truthful answers. Is it normal to be a Virging at the age of 31 and not dating anyone? I have had three major breakups because of refusing to sleep with men. men what do you look for in a woman?

  17. NO’16 ARE SAYING THAT THOSE ZAMBIAN WOMEN MARRIED TO FELLOW ZAMBIANS ARE NOT LUCK. MY MAMA IS MARRIED TO DAD, I THINK SHE HAS ALWAYS BEEN HAPPY.SO YOU THINK SHE IS NOT LUCKY, YOU ARE LUCKY NEITHER ITS JUST DESTINY. IF A PEOPLE IS DESTINED TO HAVE SOMETHING HE WILL HAVE

  18. N0 23` AM JUST SAYIN THAT AM LUCKY IN THE SENSE THAT LUCK CAME TO ME WHEN I LEAST EXPECTED IT.EVRY1 IS LUCKY IN THEIR OWN WAY.THIS IS ALSO MY OWN WONDERFUL GOD GIVEN LUCK.

  19. Mia 31, a irgin and not dating, ? Nope! I can only guess there is something wrong with you. Muposeko amano ba sister. You may miss the boat.

There are many reasons why a woman would not want to sleep with a man. Not being awkward, may be limbi tesana (hope you know what I mean here) and you think after everything the chap will leave.

May be you are not lucky like our sister who is married to an Indian! lol!

  20. Can someone help me understand wat this story is all about…I see a combination of jinx and junxes…not only is it long but also very comfusing…awe mwe…

  21. #31 Mia. I would advise you to wait.the days we are living in are not like the olden days where our mothers and fathers used to marry at a tender age.You should be proud of yourself! a virgin at 31! we now have a situation were you will find girls as young as 13 or even 12 engaging in sexual activities. Some men are just after sex in a woman.once they suck her of all her juice, then they will dump her like a dirty rug and move on to their next prey.

Women also are a problem. Always opening legs anyhow. no wonder men take advantage of you.

Mia Keep yourself pure my dear until you find a Mr right who will give you genuine love.

  22. I am so clued to this website that I discovered a few days ago. It makes me feels at home and miss Mother Zed more.

I am proud of men and women with informative and sound contribution.

I am irritated with this ka Indian called Arafat Patel, his contribution is about how great his man!@@# is and se@ life is. My six senses tell me that he is a loser who has never had a real woman in his life and that it is possible his ma# is too small to perform, hence, the physiological problem in his contributions on his pathetic on se@ life.

  23. THIS IDIAN GUY WHO IS TALKING ABOUT DIPAK, YOU ONLY VOTE FOR SOMEBODY WHO IS STANDING DIPAK HAS NOT SAID ANYTHING ABOUT BEING PRESDO

  24. Lucky is an adjective that means favored by, or producing, luck or good fortune. In layman language: Right place + Right Time + pro-active (& God on yourside)= lucky. Beat that.
