Chinese vegetables under scrutiny for melanine

Share

First it was dairy products and now it’s vegetables. There are now fears that Chinese vegetables sold in Australia may be contaminated with melamine, it is reported.

Australian food authorities are investigating reports of melamine contamination of vegetables and will complete a safety assessment, the Australian Associated Press (AAP) news agency says.

Chinese products imported into Australia include fresh garlic and peas, frozen mixed vegetables, canned mushrooms and tomato paste.

The melamine scandal started in milk products, but international media reports have raised concerns that some fruit and vegetables may also be contaminated with melamine from fertilizer or pesticide, the AAP report says.

Lydia Buchtmann from Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) was quoted as saying that Australian investigators were looking into the reports.

“We are taking this seriously,” she told AAP. “We’re investigating that, talking to overseas agencies and doing a risk assessment.”

Buchtmann said international media reports had raised concerns about Chinese mushrooms, tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce and watercress.

“At this stage, we can find no evidence that they’re unsafe but it’s certainly something we’re looking into,” she said.

If the FSANZ safety assessment found a problem, then the authorities would move to test products.

  1. In Zambia we just take it all in without a question….i wonder how much contamination we ave taken without anyone rising an eyebrow..there was that issue of Chinese belts having a birth control mechanism no one took it seriously.there is an issue of the Chinese abusing Zambian workers no one seems to worry except Sata. i am not saying they should be kicked out but they should be seriously regulated. Pa bwatoooooooooooo

  2. Yah its mighty china at it again. When pipo start collapsing one by one along the streets of zed, then u are going to remember SATA

  3. I heve been to collumn Coal Mine its really bad …boys are dying from TB.No protective clothing whatsoever. its not that the company is facing any liquidity problems but simply trying to maximize profitability with total disregard to the locals ..its really pathetic…that minister who went there, after seeing wat was going on she broke down..sent in mine inspectors probably got bribed its just the same. I can honestly wait for Sata to be president…POWER TO THE PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA

  4. I wont be surprised if we here that even the shoes from china are contaminated with melamine, please Zambian govt. wake up and strengthen your stardard controls. Ama choncholee bene dying is depopulation in their country ala twalafwa.

  5. You see. In Zed mupokelela chabe and eat till you start dropping like sacks of groundnuts.

  6. Almost everything on shelves of Asian,African,European & American stores is made in China & they are made to order.Europe & US have beef with China,Japan & the rest of the other superpowers beside Great Britain. This campaign to alienate China has been going on for a while now.China dorminate the market the world over but off course not everything is perfect, there are so many counterfeit products in China being sold to the rest of the world by pirates. It sounds ironic but all those shirts you wear saying Rocawear,Marks & Spencer etc are all made in China coz only China & Japan have the technical know how & advanced equipment to manufacture that so we have to live with that fact.

  7. I hope zambians will now wake up and see why sata is being cautious about these chinese investors, they have gotten used to producing cheap things in order to have an advantage on the world market.but now that thier labour has been becoming less and less cheap, they want to employ short cuts….to maintain their low costs of production and continue to attract foreign investment under this perceived cheap labour label…..
zambians lets be sensible, this is our health we dealing with….more over we have to creat better conditions for future generations…
Pa bwato…..it’s the better chioce Ba Ne’

  8. #9 Zeddy, your point being what…..the west is not scared of china, the west is pissed with china because they don’t follow WTO’s competition rules despite them(china) being members

  9. #1 wanama… apparently we do not take it all as it is. Try importing food products and see how much scrutiny and red tape you will go through, then come and comment.
Don’t blame Zambia… blame yourself. When did you last check the expiry date of anything and what did you do about it?
If you personally dont do something, dont blame it on others.
That is why you need to vote wisely – vote RB for continuation of policies of growth and stability.
Vote Miyanda, later for credibility. Encourage HH to stay strong for economic control and growth. Ignore PF. Vote RB

  10. people advocating for sata are doing such a good job its irritating!
China should explain what is happening. do they want to eliminate the whole world? Too many things happeining!

  11. #11 Leona: The fact that you have mentioned you’re a supporter of Sata tells me alot about you so it’s not worth it for me to put my points across coz you will not understand a thing,am sure i’ll be insulted for this too.Anyway,am sorry am not being naive but that’s just how i’ll rest my case, the internet is there for you to read the bilateral relations China has with other nations.China like other nations including Zambia is against unilateral trade(one sided trade)they want an exchange system where China supplies what others don’t have & China receives what it doesn’t have (barter trade),isn’t that fair enough, that’s what everyone wants even your Sata said so just this week.

  12. No disresect to the Chinese but the seem to have low regard for human life. We need to tighten our health and safety laws both for consumers and employees. The explosion at BRIGM in Chambishi must have taught us a lesson.

  13. No disrespect to the Chinese but the seem to have low regard for human life. We need to tighten our health and safety laws both for consumers and employees. The explosion at BRIGM in Chambishi must have taught us a lesson.

  14. No disrespect to the Chinese but they seem to have low regard for human life. We need to tighten our health and safety laws both for consumers and employees. The explosion at BRIGM in Chambishi must have taught us a lesson.

  15. #15 Zeddy i asked you to put your point accross clearly and not to put up affiliation accusations, lets be professionals….from your answer i will take it you don’t really have a clue what you are talking about….where did you get the idea of china wanting fair trade.the reason USA and EU threatened red tape against china is because china wanted to keep selling on their markets while they closed their markets to US and EU products….
This is just a forum to exchange ideas….i think sata is a better choice because he makes better sense….do you have any problem with that?

  16. # 15 Fair trade is the way forward. Why close your borders to other countries with cheaper goods? I mean if a country can produce at a cheaper rate than you, then it has a comparative advantage in that area you can only maximise the benefits of trade if you produce more in areas where you have comparative advantage. E.G china has both absolute & comparative in cloth , Zambia has comparartive advantage in copper. We should strive to add serious value to our copper exports. but this calls for proper political will.

  17. #22 Leona:The English i used in my first comment was straight forward & plain for anyone to understand,i put my points across & i clarified further in my second comment though i tried to be a ‘provocative’ a lil bit for a special reason(to measure your reasoning capacity & humour) so now i understand that you’re not dull like most supporters of Sata.I have answered why the US & Europe want to alienate China so now i’ll briefly say why i wouldn’t want Sata to rule my country.1.He’s an illiterate. 2.He’s inconcistent in ideologies 3.Too old & equally corrupt, rough on others as proved in the times of his command of”ma youth & call boys”in the 2nd & 3rd republics.4. Unclear party manifesto etc

  18. NIpabwato chabe we told you. it was milk, cadbury sweets cheese all had plastic (melamine) in them shame on them. those opposing are just doing it for the sake of it get the facts.

  19. what we need is to create awareness and strengethen consumer protection laws in Zed.people just buy products without knowing that they can return them for any defects. How many people even take the time to check expiry dates on products.

  20. #23 Analume:You may have misunderstood me slightly,China has not closed it’s borders to cheap goods,it simply does not allow imports which are readily available and are cheaper within china, that is a common policy for most countries including Zambia but most nations are not as strict as China which does not allow bulldozing from US & US because the US & UK have nothing China needs but we have what China needs that’s why China is the major player in africa now.
Production in China & India is very cheap that is why most major players like US & UK have some of their companies who have their manufacturing plants in China & India whilst the finishing depts are at home in UK & US

  21. They should legalize melanine. It’s what’s makes us abafita. We have in mu nkanda. So if everyone takes it in food then kuzankala che bantu bo fipa. So no more resizim

  22. If I write that in english they remove. Interesting. I think this site was note coded by Zambians. There is only one Zedian who can code it but he is practicing engineering instead.

  23. Yaba..these pipo, seems thy hav ths chemical olova..dnt evn gret them nw..u may becum contamintd..rili thy must b regulatd, thy wil wipe pipo ot.

  24. Zambian politics are an interesting lot, the majority always rules. Chiluba represented the majority, Chief Mukuni represented the majority chiefs and now who is the majority?
    a) Sata
    b) HH
    c) RB
    d) Miyanda
    e) The voters

  25. Can we stop getting things from them, even leting them bring things to our mother Zambia. Ngani nshonkonono natulelya.

  26. They now selling us the same vegetables especially when you visit the tuesday market by waddington centre. Apart from that they are using bad chemicals and human waste for manure and broiler chickens. Chickens ready in four weeks and being sold cheaply. Bala twipaya ba makaka. Please scrutinise these chaps with thier activities before taba la twipaya.

  27. The Chinese are too populous to respect human life, especially black life.
They are plunderers and they live like the dogs they eat. They are uncouth and would do anything to take over the world.
Sata, please get rid of these snake eaters.

  28. The only problem that we have in zambia is njala..What i mean if people had lots of choice as to where they can buy essential comodities i m sure people wouldnt buy any of this Chinese rubbish.
Poverty leads to luck of choice.

    “Poverty leads to desparate measures”

  29. The next thing you will hear is that Chinese Cell phones are emitting too much radiation and are causing brain tumours. These guys don’t care about the consumers or users of their products. Buy their phones at your own risk!!!

  30. the problem is the zambia beruea of standards and zambia investment centre should scrutinise more the products and investments that come in the country.corruption is so high that chinese are selling convinient cloths in kamwala.those clothes are ment for 1time use then thro away for pipo in transit n no time 2 wash thats y they are so chip.how does a chinese open a poultry farm in chisamba when a zambian is doing the same.most of the panado on the market is from mechshift labs in tanzania by bamwenye.there is no accountability in the org responsible.the problem begins with our regulating system if at all we have.EU n US are able to control using their strict quality control regulation

  31. continuation….because most of the companies like tesco, marks n spencer n many others are partially owned by american or bristish bussiness houses therefor are able to put presure and also most countries have strict standards so they wont compromise quality.i.e denmark is a major exporter of pork and diary products, but they cant sale german meat in denmark saying health standard r low in germany which is not true just to close the german products as they chip, pipo have learned to buy anything that is danish produced, danes have factories in china(cloths)they support their own as long as its danes label they buy.we should begin to promote and value our product & give them priority
