The opposition Patriotic Front (PF) has won by a landslide victory in a parliamentary by-election held in Nkachibiya constituency in Mpika yesterday.

The by-election was held to fill a vacant seat for the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kanchibiya constituency in Mpika following the death of the area’s representative earlier this year.

The results for the seat were considered important because it would serve as a litmus test for political parties contesting the presidential elections in two weeks time.

The ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) spokesperson Ben Tetamashimba, conceded defeat on Wednesday after its candidate who came second was left behind by an insurmountable lead by the PF candidate.

Despite heavy campaigning for the seat by the ruling party with senior party members, including the Acting President Rupiah Banda appealing with voters to select its candidate, the voters overwhelmingly voted for the PF candidate.

Political analysts said the result was an indication of the pattern of voting that will characterise the presidential election in Mpika.

Two other candidates who included an independent candidate with no political party affiliation who contested the by election came a distant third and fourth.

Analysts consider the Northern Province to be a crucial battle ground in the 30 October presidential election because of the ability of the province to swing the poll results, owing mainly to the large number of voters and non-tribal voting that characterises the votes from the province.

For your information ladies and gentlemen, there is nothing new if you are serious analyst you will understand that the patterns of voting will not change from those of 2006, there are no new voters there are the same voters who voted in 2006..so if PF was popular in Mpika or Mbala expect the same result same applies to all the other parties so don’t your energy MMD will still win at the end of the day.

  88. Sata comes from Mpika, that is his strongest hold, yet MMD has managed a sizeable number. Presidential results are about numbers from everywhere.
    Don’t celebrate too fact ba Poor Finishers. You should have judged well if this was in Solwezi or Mongu, not Mpika..
    PF shud know that they have a big battle, uphill for that matter against RB. Boma ni Boma.

  100. If PF can get 61% in Sata’s home village then things are certainly going to be bad for them on 30/10 because RB will get 98% in MMD stronghold provinces like eastern and western provinces. Thats how Levy won in 2006; even though sata cried foul it was obvious that in MMD strongholds levy was winning by larger margins than sata was in PF strongholds. Thats why sata’s political advisors (if he listens to any of them!) should have advised him to campaign in provinces that didnt vote for him so that he could have gotten a few more votes from there as well. Come 30 oct, Sata and his PF will again learn that Zambia is every vote counts even if its not in a PF stronghold

    Let me add, Levy won by large margins in his strongholds but also and most importantly, he lost comfortably in his least popular areas: he was a comfortable 2nd in most of Southern province, and in most other constituencies. Total up those figures and you have a president.
    Northern Province is not the only province in Zambia. PF shud make sure they are a comfortable second in other places like Southern/Eastern and Western to command any reasonable lead. Check the data.

Mind you the presidential election is not winner-takes-all; so every vote that RB will get in PF areas will add up to his total vote. So even the 27% that Sata’s relatives in kanchibiya gave MMD will contribute to RB’s votes. It is a fact that Sata will do very badly in areas where he is not popular, hence PF should be very very very worried at this point in time because there is no way sata can get 27% in southern, eastern or western province. If MMD can get a comfortable 27% in sata’s home then PF should start preparing to be the biggest opposition party in zambia YET AGAIN. The problem with PF chaps, especially sata wine, is that they havent yet accepted that Zambia is made up of 9 provinces; they think they can rule this country with votes from just 4 provinces.   134. I predicted a long time ago on LT that Sata will one day become a president of Zambia and I still maintain that stand because I believe most of Sata’s support is in Bemba speaking areas. In Lusaka the votes are evenly distributed even if Sata will get more votes in Lusaka city only but not other districts of Lusaka province. what language is widely spoken in copperbelt province? Bemba, that explains why Sata gets more votes there.
