Teachers squatting in Villages

Authorities at Siamambo basic school in Choma have bemoaned the shortage of teacher accommodation at the institution which has  forced teachers to be squatting  in surrounding villages.

Head teacher Milton Miyoba says the government school which was built in 1957 with a pupil population of 600 has only three houses against twenty two (22) permanent teachers.

Mr Miyoba was speaking yesterday during celebrations held at the school to commemorate the Global Hand Washing day.
The function was also attended by chiefs Macha, Moyo and Singani as well as UNICEF senior officials.

He said apart from the permanent staff, the school was also facing problems to accommodate student teachers posted to the institution.

Apart from accommodation challenges, the school were faced with the problems of toilets facilitates.

Mr. Miyoba however   stated that  UNICEF  come to the aid of the institution by providing funding the construction of the facilities in the 2004.

Mr Miyoba said the provision of the toilet facilities has dramatically increased the number of pupils attending school.

He said this increase has overwhelmed the classroom facilities with some pupils being forced to have lessons under the tree outside.

Mr Miyoba said this situation has made it difficult for pupils to learn properly during rain and cold season as they are forced to cram in one classroom.

He appealed for assistance from well wishers to help the institution put up infrastructure to accommodate both the pupils and teacher.

Why do we let problems escalate 2 this level- so the ppl at that sku after employing the 4th teacher, y didn’t they start making a fuss about housing then or if these are single ppl,wait til all the rooms were taken up- boarding house style. I mean how did they expect 2 fit 22 teachers in jus 3houses!!! When i wz stil in sku they made us fund-raise- K5000/year and now the teachers houses r even occupied. Hey since 1957,they wud hav had a whole complex by now- a little self initiative is needed sumtyms,soliciting government help should b as a last resort. Baby steps 2 development….

Its very sad indeed….we went to school to live better and modern lives, how can one enjoy the fruits of education if they are living in villages without electricity? no dstv, no tv how bad! a teacher who is frustrated cannot perform to expectation, what type of graduates can those Teachers produce?   28. Tribalism in Mpika simply because Sata comes from there is a very bad thing. This Nkanchibiya Presedence is unfortunate and must not be encouraged.     HH’s legacy has been better at handling tribe than during Andy’s legacy. I could vote HH if I had to but for the sake of peace, unity, and progress (and making sure it happens) I vote for RB.

This is not news, Teachers have had insufficient or no accommadation since the beggining of the third republic, the country has been increasing the number of schools without taking into consideration social aspects a presence of a school ie Teachers accommadtion, transportation to the bomas or sub bomas. health centress, We have schools in the middle of nowhere with out any other services apart from the school itself. Now we seem to be shocked that teachers dont have accommadation. Similarly since we are converting a Secondary School(Mbala) into a university, Are we going to be shocked if we hear that Secondary school teachers are teaching at Universities.

Both RBB and Sata are first generation UNIP. Sata is first generation MMD which was more dangerous to the Nation under Chiluba. RBB is 2nd generation MMD under LPM which saw Zambia make economic strides on hiring the UPND sympathiser MINISTER Magande. Both RBB and Sata have questionable characters.   73. No need for political capital here. Teacher accommodation in rural areas has always been in short supply and villages have always hosted teachers from nearby schools. Hope to hear how this shall be solved as opposed to who caused this or who is to blame for this. My father was a teacher in a village so I experienced this first hand.

Since Sata left the Ministry it has never recoevered. How can you have 23 months of salary arrears in a country with an economic growth rate of 6% and an inflation rate single digit?   139. I have been coming to Zambia for several years as a guest and worker. I pay for 2 girls to go to school and am assisting with 25 widows and orphans. I see the way teachers are treated and I wonder why anyone would want to teach. Rural teachers are not paid on time, they have no place to live.They are kicked like dogs and yet they continue teaching because they love your children and want to build a future for Zambia.Forget the politics do what is right, build you future.I love Zambia and want success for you all working together will lead to that success.I know many people in your political system, choose honesty and love of country and your people will find success. fight corruption always

    I agree with you totally. We have about 72 districts in Zambia. Each district has either a town clerk or a council secretary. Each district council employs at least a minimmum of 50 employees. Now these councils 1) do not pay their workers salaries (these are zambians just like us), 2) there is no effect of whatta the councils are doing 3) at ditsirct level there is no other place charged with development except the council – so why is it that we as Zambians have allowed this scenario to continue for all these years. Ask any of the council workers they will tell you that the last time they got paid was when Sata was minister or something like that. C’mon fellow Zambians
