Kafue bar owners petition Masebo over bars

Share

More than 10 bars owners and 60 residents of Soloboni compound in Kafue have appended their signatures in petitioning Local Government and Housing Minister Sylvia Masebo to shut down illegal bars in residential areas.

The residents complained that more than 70 landlords have turned their houses into illegal taverns and were operating without toilet facilities and had no trading licenses.

Addressing fellow bar owners and residents at CCF community school today group spokesperson Benwell Kapanga stated that bar owners and residents have no option but to seek government’s intervention as Kafue district council has failed to resolve the matter once and for all.

Mr Kapanga complained that the local authority is encouraging illegal activities because some illegal beer operators usually give council officials money so as not to arrest them.

He said it is unfortunate that the money which is supposed to go to the council for other services ends up in few individual’s pockets.

He added that only three bars have paid up for liquor licenses in the compound while others are operating illegally.

Another bar owner John Chilufya said that there is no sanity in the way the bars are running because they open from 05.00hours in the morning until late.

Mr Leonard Phiri said bar owners will be forced take the law into their own hand because the local authority has failed them if the minister fails to intervene.

Kafue council secretary Albert Hamayanda could not be reached as he was reported to be out of town attending a workshop in Lusaka.

  1. Don`t wory guys its only 10 days to go before the boat reaches plot one. Just jump on the boat and everything gonna be alright.

    PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATOOOOOOOO

  2. It would be good if this would spread to all parts of the country, Lusaka inclusive. Word should be sent to the Bottle store owners, so as they can change their businesses. With the proper legislation and trade conditions, they can still make profit selling Milk, cocacola products at reasonable prices and other goods. As easy as this is it all starts with regulations and fair competition. May God bless Zambia.

  3. Like Botswana and South Africa, Zambia and shall be the third Beacon of democracy in Africa. I give Credit where it is Due, thus the former mentioned countries. We can take it back and Uplift not only ourselves but black people world wide.

  4. Do not get me wrong I love all peoples that the Lord Jehovah created; but black people need a wake up call to development after Millenia of sleep, thus Abash Taverns and all Alcoholic establishments.

  5. These bululus of mine are misguided. Kafue Local Government has the authority to close these illegal Bars, infact not Bars, but Mashabeens. The only problem is that even these legal Bar-owners have kamusango; exploiting people. If these Bars sold beers at the right price, people would not go to these toilet-less Bars. In some cases the Bars do not even have right entertainment other than commercial Sex-Workers. They are facing stiff competition ka!! Lelo ni lelo, mwaladabwa

  6. Kafue is littered with bars and guesthouses where the only thing going on is sex and beer. Just like Solwezi. the local authorities do nothing in these tow towns. We need a strong leader that can make the council take charge of events and issues in their juridiction. enough is enough. the MMD Govt abets all this. Vote PF for sense and reall change.

  7. There will be no polls in 2011 – Sata
    By JAMES MUYANWA

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) leader, Michael Sata, has said there will be no presidential elections in 2011 because whoever will be elected president in this month-end’s election is supposed to rule for five years.

And Mr Sata has pledged to restore dignity to Kabwe town by reviving all closed and ailing industries in the once mining district, if elected president.

Speaking at a public rally in Kabwe at the weekend, Mr Sata said that whoever would emerge winner in the October 30 election was expected to reign for five years and therefore there would only be parliamentary and local government elections in 2011.

    Mr Sata said t

  10. There is nothing wrong with all those illigal bars, taverns or shabins as it is a consequency of the poor economic polices of the ruling MMD that is forcing pipo to find alternative survivor strategies. Otherwise then the pipo of Solobon will go stealing and Solobon is one of the notorious compounds in Zed that harbor to local and international criminals.

    Just drink the booz.

  11. The tourist capital of Zambia Livingstone there are open air shebeens right up at the Town Centre Market and Sylvia Masebo saw that with her own eyes when she came to officially opened the public loos on Kapondo Street. These shebeens stock mostly smuggled liquors and the Council in Livingstone is aware of this. It all boils down to MMD failure in the local governance of Zambia and this should help HH pull through. Keep up the good work of inefficiency Sylvia Masebo.
