Chembe boarder to be modernized

Share

Plans are underway to redesign and turn Chembe border in Mansa district into a modern town to prepare the area for an anticipated increase in the number of business activities since the commissioning of the Levy Mwanawasa Bridge.

Mansa district council Town Clerk Bwanga Kapumpa disclosed that the authority would use the K150 million Integrated Development Plan (IDP) funding from government to turn Chembe into a modern border town.

In an interview with ZANIS Mr Kapumpa said since the completion and commissioning of the Mwanawasa Bridge across the Luapula River at Chembe there was an anticipated increment in traffic and business at the point via the Peddicle road.

Mr Kapumpa said following the completion of the bridge at Chembe area the council also anticipates a boom in infrastructure development.

He said to avoid Chembe being found in a situation of haphazard construction of infrastructure, the council is developing an Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for the area.

He said the development plan will include reserved land for tourism infrastructure along the Luapula River, a truckers parking area and land for commercial farms.

He explained that identifying land for truckers at Chembe was critical because the area anticipates an increase in the influx of traffic along the Pedicle Road as a result of the Mwanawasa Bridge.

“If we do not prepare ourselves and let development take place without a plan then we can have a situation like in Solwezi. We might have a situation of having no parking place for trucks which might lead to congestion if we do not prepare,” Mr Kapumpa said.

The K46 Billion worth Levy-Mwanawasa Bridge was commissioned last week by Acting President Rupiah Banda.

The bridge was named after late President Levy Mwanawasa during a full council meeting in Mansa early this year.

The Councilors’ named the bridge after the late President to honour him for his commitment to implement the construction of the facility across the Luapula River it to ease communication in the northern region.

  1. Town clerk its only possible if you vote wisely. vote PAAAAAAAABWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAATOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO then your dream will come true.

  2. MMD ITS TO LATE FOR YOU TO DO THAT. IN FACT MODERNIZATION ARE SATA’s POLICIES. ELECTIONS ALWAYS MAKE YOU CHAPS SAY NICE THINGS. EVERY ZAMBIAN TOWN HAS POTENTIAL WEALTHY IN TERMS OF ANYTHING ONE MAY THINK OF. THEREFORE, ZAMBIA IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY BUT FIRST-COMPETING WITH AMERICA, BRITAIN JAPAN, ETC. ANYWAY, NO WORRIES, MICHAEL SATA IS COMING TO IMPLEMENT ALL PF’s POLICIES OF NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND MODERNIZATION. PAAAAARK AND VIVA SATA AND PF.

  3. If wishes were horses….,
The idea is good, but who will design the area? Integrated in what sence? Using local poeple or what? Locate your activities to one side of the bridge as the road through Mumbwa, Kaoma, Mkushi, and Serenje have been designed, by the china man. Don’t straddle development across the road, and bridge, as is the case with Chibombo, Kapiri, most Southern and all Luapula Province towns, where accidents occur almost daily, calling for speed bumps on a highway.
Let experts come in and help.

  4. THE CONTENT OF YOUR MODERNIZATION PLAN IS ALMOST EMPTY-JUST A PARKING LOT, AND BLAH, BLAH BLAH. I THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO TALK ABOUT A ROAD NETWORK PLAN FOR THE TOWN FIRST, A HOSPITAL, PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS, A COLLEGE, A SHOPPING MALL (WITH BANKS, POST OFFICE, COMMUNICATION FACILITIES, CIVIC CENTRE, PUBLIC TOILETS, ETC. WHATS WRONG WITH YOU TOWN PLANNERS OF ZAMBIA. ARE YOU REALLY WORTH THE NAME? BY THE WAY B4 YOU START YOUR MODERNIZATION PLANS CAN YOU FIRST CONSULT AS WELL AS HAVE A SPOT-CHECK ON BOTSWANA TOWNS. COMPARE KASANE AND LIVINGSTONE.

  5. The maths seems a bit puzzling here. How can K150m turn a bush into a modern town? Still MMD maths always puzzles me. They spent K1bn on chitenge material, but they only have K150m to build a modern town! Welcome to Zambia.

  6. #4 and #5-You have really impressed me with your contibution. If we have many people with a gift of critical thinking like you, we would be somewhere as a nation. More often than not, comments provided here lack the face of a “public good” and do not have intellectual merit. We need to be analytical so that we provide a plethora of rich detailed solutions and not insults.

#5 to tone down the language, though.

    Please carry on.

  7. The idea is sounds good from the town clark but he should shade more light on what facilities they intend to construct than parking lot only and how they are going to do that with only K150,million.

  8. I’m a sleep and I’m dreaming: Corruption will quickly creep in allocating plots. Shanties will come and encrotch from all angles. There will be poor road net work and no drainages, no play parks no hospital to talk about and no water facilities despite being or sitting a few metres from the river. sanitation issues forget use the bush to answer the call of nature. building standards will be un heard of build even without a plan. I have woken up. what country is this, where are we?

  9. Kumunyama, i subscribe to your line on thought. This mordernisation of Chembe bridge borders on misuse of tax payers money. There are indeed priority areas where these efforts are supposed to be channeled. Such are the projects used as conduits to plunder our resources. Our roads are in such a state that if you are driving on a straight road and you are swerving every 10meters that you drive then you are drunk.
    Politicians please think right!!!

  10. There is need to develop Modern settlements at major border entry points like Nakonde, Kazungula, Chembe, Katimamulilo, Mukambo, Mwammi etc.The problem is we like talking too much with very little positive action

  11. “Peter asked Vice-President Banda to forgive all those who voted against him”. Why the word ‘FORGIVE’? Not everyone can vote for one candidate. If no people are opposing you, the know there is something wrong with you or the system or both. Please, read the post about the divisions in MMD.
