ECZ should embark on continuous voters registration, Fr. Miha

Share

Mission Press Director Father Drevensek Miha has called on the Electoral Comission of Zambia (ECZ) to embark on a continuous voters registration to avoid disfranchising people in the future elections.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Ndola today, Father Miha said many eligible voters were disfranchised in the just ended Presidential elections because they had lost their voters cards and were not given a chance to get new ones.

He said the issuance of voters cards should be a continous process, including voters education, especially in rural areas for the people living there to understand the importance of voting and also help them make informed decisions.

He observed that the majority of Zambians living in rural areas do not understand the importance of voting and how their choice of candidates affects their lives.

Meanwhile Father Miha has urged President Rupiah Banda to intervene in the rising prices of mealie-meal to enable all Zambians to afford decent meals.

He said the rising prices of mealie-meal cannot be justified. Mealie-meal prices have been rising since the 30th October Presidential by-election and are as high as K75,000 per 25kg bag in some retail shops.

And on Saturday Minister of Agriculture Ben Kapita attributed the rising prices of the commodity to retailers determining their own prices.

  1. Will settle for #3.

The Father is on the right track except whats the point of registering more voters if the wishes of the few that are already registered in terms of their desired leaders will never be granted???
God help us – this is the trend all over Africa!

  2. The true of the matter is that most people have lost confidence in the ECZ because of the way ECZ conduct its self with ruling party and come 2011 few people will still be registered as voters.

  3. Are People in rural areas managing to buy a bag of mealie meal at K75 pin? They shuold just die with hunger thats RB they wanted.
And why is RB not issuing any directives to reduce the price of mealie mael when the increase is not justified?

  4. #9 – Answer 1: NO. Villagers have mealie meal, pleanty of it, actually. They don’t have to buy.
Answer 2: Because that would be bad for business, baba. Ask why George Bush was not asking business men to reduce fuel prices and yet he knew it was causing difficulties in industries.
If price controls are why you were voting for PF, thank God you lost. Look at Zimbabwe, bwana.
No economy that does well controls prices anywhere. Zambia is not a special case. We did it under KK. If u were not born yet, let me tell u that it was bad.

  5. Registration can continue but no more confidence in these recycled useless finished politicians.we need elimination methods to these issues of poitical prostitutes who move from political parties for pocket gains.Zambian politics is in dusty filthy bins stinking.

  6. #5,8,9: Always looking for scape goats, typical. At 37% turnout and compared to the Satamania crowds you guys simply did not vote. No amount of continuous registration will cure your attitudes. No rigging, just look elsewhere for your bruised egos.

As for the biased Father (I know what I am talking about), please tell him that the rural populace are able to analyse the “90 days” promises better than him. Given the choices available to Zed, the rural folk know which devil is better. How can the good Father and any right thinking Zedian think that 63% of the registered voters could have lost their voters cards?

  7. Let’s do some maths. The voter turnout was 45% according to the ZEC report in today’s Post. If you looked at Post’s Satamania crowds
do you honestly believe that 55% of voters lost their voters cards? If they did, to me that is being irresponsible from the point of view of wasting national resources. To put this matter in perspective 55% of 3,900,000 registered voters is 2,145,000 voters cards to be replaced at ZMK????.

This is sheer carelessness and wastage in a so-called poor nation. How many people lose their educational certificates at this rate? Meagre national resources should be directed at attacking poverty, not funding carelessness.

  8. # 10 whenever hunger strikes people who suffer most are those in villages despite them cultivating, because they are prone to market exploitation of their own products and ends up not benefiting from their own sweats.Zim saga and kenya saga is an example of what politics affect people in villages.so just keep on watching from a distance.

  9. The toothless SADC which declared the flawed elections in zambia free and fair has yet again failed the people of zimbabwe. SADC is a waste of taxpayers’ money in the member countries.

  10. “UPND denies media reports
The UPND has dispelled media reports suggesting that the party is pondering on an electoral pact with the Patriotic Front (PF).Party Secretary General, Tiens Kahenya, said in a statement to ZNBC that his party is not contemplating entering into a pact with any political party.Mr. Kkahenya said UPND is currently conducting a post mortem of the last presidential election. He said the party is also focusing on the 2011 tripartite elections.Mr. Kahenya however, said his party will always remain committed to genuine proposals for alliances.” Source: w w w . z nbc . c o . z m / media / news / viewnews . c g i ? c a t e go r y = 8 & i d = 1226342342

  11. Rubbish. Where on earth is ECZ supposed to find the money to do this? Why should the president have the right to dictate the prices of private businesses’ commodities? I have said this before but thank God Sata did not win. Such bootlickers would probably have high government positions right now.

  12. “And Mr. Kahenya has advised the Patriotic Front to stop commenting on the failed pact between the two parties. He was reacting to sentiments by PF Publicity and Information Secretary, Given Lubinda over the failed pact before the just ended elections. And UPND Secretary for Information and Publicity, Charles Kakoma has advised Mr. Lubinda to be mindful of what he says about other parties. He maintains that Mr. Sata walked out of the pact meeting, because he believed he had confidence that he would win the election.” Source: w w w . muvitv . com /news / Nov2008 / 10thpnews1 . h t m l
The UPND men are speaking now. Zambians, we are not poor thus YES we all can prove this with president HH.

  13. # 19 u are building castles in the air, HH staborness will cause not to become president. In zambian politics its not how much money you have makes you to be president but its all about how much influence you have in voters in this case villagers..

  14. yes Father…..good point but who cares about this in the GVT….THESE GUYS ARE CRISIS MANAGEMENT OFFICERS… THEY WILL NEVER BE PROACTIVE MANAGEMENT OFFICERS…… fo one simple reason…. eductaed foools……politics of benefit……gvt of the gvt by the gvt for the gvt and its party

  15. #11 U HAVE SPOKEN…… STINKING ZAMBIAN POLITICS… LOOK AT THE CROP OF POLITICIANS WE HAVE IN GVT…. ONLY KAUNDA HAD CREDIBLE LEADERS NOT THESE MAFYAS.. CADRES….JOB SEEKERS…..KAPONYAS…NOISE MAKERS……EMPTY MOUTHS…..THEY CANT EVEN GO AND ELECT THEIR PARTY PRESIDENT INSTEAD THEY WANT TO APPOINT THRU THE MEDIA………..POLITICAL OPPOTUNIST INDEEED

  16. MILLERS BUY ALL THE MAIZE FROM THESE RURAL VILLAGE CHICKENS AND RESALE YOUR MEAL AT 100PIN TO THEM………FREE MKT ECONOMY MUZACHIONA

  17. #10 have you got a short memory or you r just an mmd cadre who follows blindly. How can it be bad for the economy if during campains your rb was reducing prices of almost every thing and sometimes for free. Akulyafye ifya mmd and stop provoking us.#9 me am surrendering my voters card cos i dont want to be lining up at the polling station for nothing.

  18. These Catholic priests/bishops are not objective enough to provide any moral guidance to us. They clearly support their THUG of a son, Sata. Yes, voter registration & education should be an on-going exercise but these CATOLICA chaps & their mouth piece The Post better stop taking us for granted. As for Ben Kapita, don’t just say retailers are manipulating prices, do a thorough investigation as to what economic fundamentals (if any) are driving these prices up and DO something about it as GRZ! That’s what you’re paid for you chap…

  19. #18 Correct. How many people should be put on ecz payroll only to register one voter per month?we have other issues to spend our money on,and we are not banking on our presidents dying every two years.I know people enjoy the drama that comes with an election, thats costly entertainment.

  20. LT can you please dig deeper and give us some information regarding the new ZAMBIAN PASSPORT? Some of us in diaspora are going to be in deep trouble when our passports expire because it is taking too long (more than 4 months) to get our passports renewed, It is not possible to get a visa without a valid passport!! Can you please check with the passport office in Lusaka and find out what’s happening there?

  21. Mr Mushili (Ndola Central): Madam Speaker, with the introduction of the new machines and centralisation of the issuing offices to Lusaka, Livingstone and Ndola, how will people be issued passports without being subjected to queuing up at the passport offices as this is what has caused a lot of corruption?

Lieutenant-General Shikapwasha: Madam Speaker, queuing up will be eradicated totally because the new equipment that we have put in place produces more than 1000 passports in 24 hours. Therefore, because of this new technology, there is no need for our people to queue up.

  22. MR SENSIBLE, I WISH YOU KNEW THE PERSON YOU ARE TALING ABOUT OR REFERRING TO. FATHER MIYA CAME TO ZAMBIA MAY BE BEFORE SOME OF YOU WERE BORN. HE HAS BEEN TO ALL PROVINCES OF THIS COUNTRY AND HE HAS REACHED WHERE THE GOVERNMENT HAS NEVER REACHED. SO WHEN HE SPEAKS LET HIM TALK BECAUSE HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. IF IT’S ON THE RECENT ELECTIONS LET HIM TALK BECAUSE THESE PEOPLE SENT THEIR REPRESENTATIVE IN ALL THE POLLING STATIONS IN THE COUNTRY. SO THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO CAN TELL US THE TRUE REFLECTION OF THE RESULTS, HOW MANY PEOPLE IN RURAL ZAMBIA VOTED.

HAVE YOU HEARD THEM CONVEY ANY MESSAGES OF CONGRATULATIONS FOR WINNING THE ELECTIONS? WHY? THEY KNOW THE TRUTH. ASK HIM

  23. I would like to comment on voter aparthy. Why did the voters not come out in drones to vote for their candidate of choice?
ANSWER: Because voters were not given a choice in terms of the quality of the presidential candidates. They have heard the same songs from the same recycled politicians, to the voters, whether it’s SATA or RB they saw no one would bring about change. Offer them someone new on the political scene, you will see how they will turn out. Remember in 1991? People wanted changed and new players were on the block, even a new dog could have won a seat in parliament during that time. People get tired of seeing the sames faces, hearing the same monotonus voices.

  24. No. 34 Are aware that the Pope Himself has congraturated RB on these elections ? So if the Pope says so then he speaks for us Catholics too because he cant without consulting.

  25. NO 37, the Pope and papacy are not the ideal democracy dear. Once in office as Pope until you die. Am a Catholic and have a moral responsibility to think on my own and do not need a Pope or political Bishops and thier materialist priests who are so rich and do not live the powerlessness of the poor people of Zambia. Religion intoxicates so think beyond the Pope.

  26. #38. you missed #37s point.he is simply imforming #34 that the Catholic through the POPE have congratulated RB hence endosing him.who is Fr Miha compared to the POPE in tames of being represented and being well informed?and you seem not to understand the papacy on democracy cos the next thing you will tell us is that GOD is not democratic in his reign.
