Don’t point accusing fingers at each other, opposition parties advised

Share

A Ndola Senior Citizen has advised the losing political parties in the just ended October 30 presidential by-elections to have a fair election postmortem before pointing an accusing finder at anyone.

Mr. Humphrey Ngulube told ZANIS in Ndola that the opposition was fragmented and needed to learn from what they did in 1991 to unseat the all powerful UNIP regime.

He said the opposition strategy was faulty because they did not have one message for the electorate as one party promised more money in people’s pockets without explaining where the money would come from.

He said the other promise was the lowering of taxes, also without explaining how this was going to be done, when it is known that governments raise money through taxes.

He added that some messages scared investors and eroded investor confidence which played badly on the electorate’s minds engaged by the investors in various sectors of the Zambian economy who felt their jobs would be at stake when the investors decided to go away.

He advised the opposition to learn from the American politics where only two major parties contest and the defeated candidates congratulate the winners because they know they want to serve the same people and there was only one chance at a time for a person to become president.

He said the ruling MMD had only one message of development and continuity from where the late president left and people understood such that message without remaining with unanswered questions.

He advised that the church should remain neutral on issues that had the potential of dividing the nation and provide Godly counselling which would build the nation because there were many factors and issues that unite Zambians than losing an election.

He said the division that existed in some people’s minds in the opposition political parties was not real to many Zambians because the country was more united now than before.

He said the opposition should also consider formulating a workable strategy for rural Zambians where experience has now shown than they were not performing and their strategy was either non existent or adversely poor.

  1. The fact is that 6 candidates contested for presidence in America in 2008 elections. the other point to note is that there are more than 28 registered political parties the USA. Be informed dont quote from without.

  2. This guy Humphrey Ngulube is anti PF he was only quoting PF promises, we will see if RB would even remember rural dwellers in the next three years.

  3. THANK YOU ZAMBIANS FOR YOUR GOOD BEHAVIOUR,DURING ELECTIONS NOW WHY YOU GUYS FIGTHING OVER SMALL ISSUES E,G VERYFICATIONS OF PRESIDENTIAL RESULTS YOU ARE GROWN UP.

  4. I agree with some of the points raised. However, we should avoid the idea of forcing opposition parties to work together or merge just for the sake of unsitting the ruling party. What we ought to appreciate is that different parties with divergent ideologies are not likely achieve the synergies necessary for them to build on their individual strengths. Only parties that have the same ideology should work together as their visions are likely to be similar. The problem many parties face is the lack of coherent and well articulated policies. Such parties are merely vehicles used to fulfill the personal ambitions of a few egotistical people.

  5. Hats off Mr Ngulube ,u are a wise man indeed.CAN YOU IMAGINE these greedy opposition parties’ promises :

UPND >>> free education from grade 0 to G12.Where on earth can these liars find money to educate everyone.K3.5M salary for civil service..??????

PF is even worse>>> more money in pockets..from where..????? is it bank robbery or zimbambwe hyperinflation..????

  6. Mr. Ngulube, you must have been studying these PF,UPND and of course no Heritage, back to the Village policies as the Village is where you live. Is general living in the Village?
More money in your pocket, I suppose from lower taxes. How can you lower taxes to some one who does not pay tax, the Kaponya PF supporters. MMD does not have policies either. Continued development for Shangombo where people were voting two days afterwards, this means continuation with undevelopment.
Zambia does not have political parties that are based on ideologies, all are just interested to be in State house and enjoy themselves. What can Sata do? All Cadres will be police-men/women throwing stones all over,

  7. Banda is already too old to be President. he just want a good retirement package. What Can he deliver for Zambia? This is just filling in the spaces for the time being.

  8. # 10 In some rural raes zambians are treated like python. They are still digesting the food RB & MMD fed them on Nov 30 the day of election, thereafter wait to be fed again sometime in 2011.It is not compaign which matters in Zambian elections,it is food at hand, corruption and rigging of election. The rural poor are badly hit by this system.

  9. This should also be the time when they revisit the constitution of Zambia particularly the Article regarding presidential elections when an incumbent dies. God forbid if anything happened to RB, are we going to have elections again? I think the American setup where they vote for a vice president who takes over if the president becomes incapacitated would be very ideal for Zambia’s new democracy and cost effective in the long run. Hopefully, those working on the constitution can consider this issue as a matter of national security. Finally, the opposition should realize that the votes that were split between UPND and PF if put together were enough for them to have won the elections.Go figure!

  10. Fake chaps, all what politicians do is cheat the electorate. Lower taxes, more money in the pocket, free education. Who pays for these things…? Ultimately it is the civil servants. All the 2008 candidates are crap!!!

  11. Sata has the best ideas of the four parties. No politics of appeasment. 16 miniters. The rest the money goes in the pocket of tax payers including the so called Kaponyas who are actually marketeers, tire menders, road workers and all those who do dirty jobs but get almost nothing. The rest of the money goes to hospitals and schools. There is money for everybody, but it is being Misused on corruption and other things so that MMD can stay in office for a long time.

  12. i agree with you 13,in rural area thats where these feck politicians hide there lies because of free food they give and forget tomorrow.are we likely to vote again on 30th nov- ?acconding to what you have wrote.

  13. These senior poverty citizens.if you ve never travelled to witness development we better keep quiet.zambia is tenth in cu production but among the poorest countries in the world.justify to be intelligent in class & getting zeros during examination any sense?

  14. #1 ba anonymous! You are a mouse! Naimwe mulachitako ifya bu number 1? Awe twasuula? How old are you people on this blogg? Ba kapoli!

  15. politics are fun, Obama’s campaign was to increase tax for rich people in states so that they pay more and atlast tax return is shared among middle class.Sata’s campaign was to lower tax and more money in pockets.HH free education from grade 1 to university.

  16. # 19 Zambians don’t understand the poverty levels in zambia. You can judge by the strength of a kwacha t a dollar; look at these figures: $1= K 3,910.00 zam kwach
    $1= 876.47 Zim dollar
    $1= 75.15 Angolan Kwanza
    $1= 145.25 Malawan Kwacha
    $1= 9.92 Ethopian Birr
    $1= 2.23 Sudanese pound
    $1= 1,252.00 Tanzania Shilings
    $1= 1,215.50 Burundi Franc
    $1= 562.64 Rwanda Franc.
Where does the copper money go? The copper price has now fallen.

  17. I am Mr Ngulube has not shown that president Hakainde Hichilema had fake promises. In fact HH’s promises are real for he indicated that the money is always shown in th Auditor General’s report which all are free to see. To show the might UPND’s seriousness, president HH went on to even sign the SOCIAL CONTRACT which no other presidential aspirant at that time did. President HH is committed to bringing all his promises to fruition and only those who chose to be myopic could not see sense in what the UPND is promising. Let us ask ZNBC to broadcast debates on TV regarding campaign promises and how they will be delivered once each party forms GRZ beginning now to 2011 so we can hear again .

  18. #22,Phiri, thanks Mr/Mrs/Ms Phiri for this good data.

I personally believe that Zambia is not a poor country and president HH is right in all his calculations together with the whole UPND Team’s manifesto.

  19. Well said on all points, Senior Citizen. On the issue of two candidates in fact when there are two candidates the 50%+1 votes is (more) attainable and much cheaper than going to expensive second round voting just to satisfy the many politicians’ egos to reside at Plot One.
By the way, I am sure this Senior Citizen is ugly looking like my old father and yours (and possibly like myself and yourself) but what I value him for is the wisdom and that he is a human being.

  20. “UPND denies media reports
The UPND has dispelled media reports suggesting that the party is pondering on an electoral pact with the Patriotic Front (PF).Party Secretary General, Tiens Kahenya, said in a statement to ZNBC that his party is not contemplating entering into a pact with any political party.Mr. Kkahenya said UPND is currently conducting a post mortem of the last presidential election. He said the party is also focusing on the 2011 tripartite elections.Mr. Kahenya however, said his party will always remain committed to genuine proposals for alliances.” Source: w w w . z nbc . c o . z m / media / news / viewnews . c g i ? c a t e go r y = 8 & i d = 1226342342

  21. #22 please do not insult our inteligence by your mythical “90 days”. What about when the Italian currency was in use did that make Italian poverty levels greater than Zambia’s?

  22. “And Mr. Kahenya has advised the Patriotic Front to stop commenting on the failed pact between the two parties. He was reacting to sentiments by PF Publicity and Information Secretary, Given Lubinda over the failed pact before the just ended elections. And UPND Secretary for Information and Publicity, Charles Kakoma has advised Mr. Lubinda to be mindful of what he says about other parties. He maintains that Mr. Sata walked out of the pact meeting, because he believed he had confidence that he would win the election.” Source: w w w . muvitv . com / news / Nov2008 / 10thpnews1 . h t m l
The UPND men are speaking now.

  23. Mr. Humphrey Ngulube has said a lot of wise and sensible things, let’s take heed fellow Zambians. This is the type of advice any presidential hopeful should embrace.

  24. i agree with u 12,banda will do nothing but bring back the unip govment to distroy the nation with the help of vj and lyk.2 hell with this govment.sata the best of all.

  25. 32 & 33 I agree with you Banda is a waste of another three. It will be worse if he goes in the shoes of LPM because the late president had all the good times and money to swing the zambian economy for good and stronger but failed.Instead he spent money on leisure and fighting Chiluba. Now copper price has follen and it is still going down.

  26. CDP- the party of the furtue. New faces are needed; ONE WORD; the citizens democratic party; com. On the web see for yourself

  27. Only a dull Zambian could believe that Zambia ia a poor country. Right now, millions and millions of dollars from copper sales leave the country every day by paying the so called expatriate staff in the mining industry who render nothing but collecting data from office to office every day. This is done on the expense of Zambians who actually do the job and are paid peanuts every months, K1800000 as opposed to K840000000 paid to these fake expatriates. When are you Zambians going to wake up and realise that you have got only one country to boast about ? People are stealing your wealth and you are watching.

  28. Mr. Ngulube I know you, you are former teacher and a staunch UNIP supporter what Sata talked about is simple when you use the theory of economy of scale you will understand that it not the issue of quality but quantity make sure that the people who paying tax are many and that the taxes are reasonable. before independence every persons at the of 21 was required to pay tax of some sort, they was Hut tax, poll tax, naitive tax, and many more. this is the reason why sata’s tax system would have worked.

  29. 37. Anonymous,
I agree with Mr Ngulube on the issues he raised about unexplained promisses. In Africa, when a person is corrected on their actions or decision they tend to feel inferior and conclude they are hated. In west the trend is different, they appreciate correction, and advice.
Now, it is no so much in how correct your theory is concerning any issue during campaign but it is about whether the elecorate understand you. You must understand the the electorate is not an ‘economist’ but consider it as ‘citizen’. The oposition can choose to defend itself against correction and advice, but whether that will help them or not depends on the perception of the electorate.

  30. #37 Anonymous, uhmm try again in 2011. And how was he supposed to put more money in the pockets of the Satamania crowds if he was to introduce new taxes for this lot who had never tax before?
So there was no rigging in 2008, just a failure to deliver the message.

  31. If the politicians were not so greedy and selfish those chaps ought to have consolidated into one major party but because they all have different motives they cant do that.SHAME they will continue failing

  32. RB is in for it. The mealie meal prices have continued to go up.
Some Mining Companies have started retrenching workers because of the low Copper Prices on the World Market.

  33. I aggree RB was just used FOR ”CYA” purposes….. he is old to rule this nation we needed some fresh blood to propelll this nation to the next level… these guys only wanted to retain their JOBS so they could steal more and more before the term ends……..they had to do everything to achieve this.

without change the country will be at still position 5-6% growth…. too much talking and no actions………

  34. On taxes read about Eliakim, who changed his name to Joiakim in the bible.although he imposed heavy taxes on the people of Judah the issue of taxes is very importance it is the administartion of taxes, how you should make every person know the the important of paying taxes. the taxes system in Zambia is very bad only those formal sector are subjected to heavy taxes. the informal it is plain sailing.Do not misunderstand me about the colonial days, the lesson to learn was every one was made to pay tax if he is of age 21 yrs above. look at the positive side of every person contribute to the treasurey even a K 500-00 will go a long way when you count numbers.

  35. LT can you please dig deeper and give us some information regarding the new ZAMBIAN PASSPORT? Some of us in diaspora are going to be in deep trouble when our passports expire because it is taking too long (more than 4 months) to get our passports renewed, It is not possible to get a visa without a valid passport!! Can you please check with the passport office in Lusaka and find out what’s happening there?

  36. Mr Mushili (Ndola Central): Madam Speaker, with the introduction of the new machines and centralisation of the issuing offices to Lusaka, Livingstone and Ndola, how will people be issued passports without being subjected to queuing up at the passport offices as this is what has caused a lot of corruption?

Lieutenant-General Shikapwasha: Madam Speaker, queuing up will be eradicated totally because the new equipment that we have put in place produces more than 1000 passports in 24 hours. Therefore, because of this new technology, there is no need for our people to queue up.

  37. #22 thanks for the data,But please check the exchange rate for Zim dollar. I think it is far worse than indicated. The opposition should insist that there is a new voters registration and they must participate in voter education to ensure that the people in areas were they have support register and vote during the next election

  38. Mr Ngulube, you must be from unip, where are you from and where have you been? Your points might correct but need to come and see some don at unza so that they can explain to you how people will pay reduced tax and have more money in the pockets and the nation will still move foward.
Mr Ngulube talk about the increased mealie meal prices and your cheap fertilizer, may you will make some sense.

  39. Who wants to unite the parties and then end up with MMD like we did in 1991? A group of people who united in hatred against Kaunda when each had a hidden agenda, like thieving as someone who shall not be mentioned?

Let each party flex their muscles and see whether they can achieve a majority. If not, we shall be doomed to more years of MMD rule, but maybe that’s what we deserve? Aren’t we a Christian nation and guided by the almighty, as our preachers always say? Our leaders are chosen and have been chosen from above… Lord have mercy…
