President Hichilema to sign five bills today

President Hakainde Hichilema is today, June 4, 2026 expected to sign into law a set of landmark Bills aimed at strengthening Zambia’s education system and reforming the National Pension Framework.

The five bills to be assented to by President Hichilema include the Education (Amendment) Bill, 2026, National Pension Scheme Bill, 2026, Public Service Pensions Bill, 2026, Pension Scheme Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2026 as well as the Local Authorities Superannuation Bill, 2026

The Education (Amendment) Bill will enshrine free education as a permanent Policy, securing access for future generations.

Since its introduction in January 2022, the free education Policy has seen over 2.6 million children return to school, marking a significant step in expanding opportunities for young people.

President Hichilema underscored that education is the best investment and the greatest equaliser noting that the legislation will safeguard the country’s long-term economic foundation.

The pension reforms will bring clear and immediate benefits to Zambian workers and retirees.

The minimum pension will rise from K1,861 to K2,327 impacting more than 17,000 members currently on pension.

In addition, about 30,000 retirees will gain access to advance lump sums of up to K17,500, while 1.2 million members will benefit from improved growth of their savings under the National Pensions Scheme Authority, NAPSA.

The laws will protect the gains already made for the children and workers in the country by touching lives from the classroom to the workplace to secure retirement for workers.

This is contained in a statement issued to to the media in Lusaka this evening by Chief Communications Specialist, Clayson Hamasaka.
