President Rupiah Banda says it will be difficult for government to increase the allocated farming inputs under the Fertilizer Support Program (FSP) in this farming season.
Mr Banda said it was difficult for government to access supplementary fertilizer because the commodity was not locally produced, adding that it was too late to restart procurement procedures.
The President said this in an interview with journalists after he arrived at Chipata airport this morning.
President Banda explained that it would not be easy to access the farming inputs and distribute to farmers on time because the planting season had already begun.
He however expressed confidence that government would increase the allocation of the farming inputs for the 2009/10 farming season.

The President also stated that the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) was currently addressing the hunger situation in some parts of Eastern province.
He reiterated that government was committed to addressing the hunger situation in the country and would continue to distribute relief food to needy areas.
Meanwhile Chongwe Member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo accused companies contracted by government to supply fertilizer under the Fertilizer Support Programme (FSP) of sabotage when they were ordering their depots to close.
Mrs. Masebo said suspending fertilizer distribution when the country was experiencing soaring food prices was sabotaging government.
She said the companies already knew that government would always pay the debts owed to them and therefore, there was no need to suspend the distribution of farming inputs under the FSP.
Mrs. Masebo was speaking in Chongwe district at the official launch of the Public Private Partnership (PPP) programme in the agriculture sector.
Mwayambako ma stories ! Number what ?
As a country we have to move away from this dependency on ferti;liser. we need alternatives. fertiliser support programme has been there for six years now. but what has been its impact in terms of poverty reduction? The poor do not even benefit, instead we here in some cases its the civil servants that end up benefiting. Something more ough to be done and moving away fron fertiliser to organic farming would be more sustainable.
Namba fili:d vex if you want to vex:d

I feel as a country we seriuosly need to assess the importance of the Fertiliser Support Programme to our food security. The fertiliser is mostly not reaching the small-scale farmers.Ministers, District Commisioners,MMD Party cadres and Ministry of Agriculture employees are are the ones who are mostly benefiting from this fertiliser.:((
In my opinion RB should resign. His decisions are premature. Tulefwaya Sata ateke!
hey nice guy walasa….
its true he thought ruling is dozing che…..and he is saying there is no president in zambia who has faced problems like him. He is forgeting that all faced the same problems but at leased they reasoned though some were impupu…RB please pull up your soacks ala. :(:(
RB aliba useless. Mwalafwa kunsala ba vikara. RB alelila imwe bambi mulechula ba vikara.
The fertiliser which was promised at 50pin, you cant easily find. We are buying at 275pin, and most people wont plant according to plans. Hence, next year we should be prepared for worse in terms of maize shortage as well as high mealie-meal prices. It was a big mistake to hire a retired politician.
50 pin fertiliser? and NCZ is non-productive? twabepwa mwebantu!
You people should be apy becos of LB. Us ere we just ave the pilates luling us. no govmet
#15 yashani iyo Why insulting, you are a nice guy ifyakutukana tafyakulolamo
Yet, the same fertilizer is what was used during election gimic. Bayambapo maboza.
Ba JMM even in 1991 the MMD declared that they would eradicate Cholera. Did that happen so dont take campaign talk literaly
Bena Zambia, is there a shortage of intellectualls to stand for Presidency?
Bena Marapodi, that is exactly the point, we tend to forget fast. Politics aside, we are also dealing with moral issues here.
No leadership, Leadership Deficit, Can not plan beyond 3 days.
JMM i am not disputing what you are saying. It just pains me that we even bother to listen to politicians. Anyway most Zambian intellectaulls are enjoying in sorogate countries
Zambia needs leaders men and women who can lead. There leaders should have been planning before the farming season alas these leaders are full of it and plenty excuses :-@
when i said RB “Li tall lay” all of you laughed that i was just missing “chi colour” levy. this guys will let you eat ‘armour sue she” he cant reason because he has a mouth like “each in your” and sleeps like “ale near” you have all been conned by “tool fee colour ” to ‘MMD. “par what all !”
Zambians, shame on u.YOU decided to for RB and thats what u get.
Voting based on tribal, regional and party lines will not help to develop the country.

If dad was around i would have rammed RB par mar tar call with the Hummer we used in Gambia. how does he spoil our game like this. all the same i will tell uncle darlington to “fee on on nar ” grand pa nyama soya

Awe Ba Maureen only God will deal with you guys.
We reap what we sow….Zambians were told not to vote for old out of ideas politicians they did not listen because of tribal loyaties and demonising others….there it is we have! 3 years of no direction! dont even think Sata would have done better. He would have been busy blaming MMD. Next time and if we survive this looming hunger, viva yoing brains
The fertilizer for 50 pin is an illusion. People will just have to adjust their budget and buy the expensive one in retail shops. Its a pity to those who ploughed and planted more in the hope of accessing the FSP.
It was a nice campaign strategy, especially knowing that it could not be made true… in other words..cheap politics
Baby c,Supergal, sweet Thang, pumpy,Sony Ericsony,Ba moze,MgNaAlg5(Si4O10)3(OH,Rashid Jones,UK-Zed Observer,Chamba Valley, fine and others that I have not mentioned.please guys where are you? Lots of angry PF cadres here.
Even before Rupiah Banda starts doing his work, he is already judged and labeled a bad leader.
I will just give a quote from the Bible. “And Jesus said unto them, let him that has no sin cast the first stone”.
In short, what would Sata have done differently that he didn’t do under the FTJ regime.
News to me that Masebo is actually a mrs!
With all those wardrobe mishaps at parliament… hmmm
#11 UNDERTAKER. IF YOU LISTENED TO THE PREVIOUS ELECTIONS CAMPAIGNS THEN YOU WILL AGREE WITH ME THAT SATA AND PF WERE RIGHT ABOUT THE CHIEFS BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR FERTILISER AND OTHER FARMING INPUTS DISTRIBUTION. THE CHIEFS KNOW WHO DESERVES WHAT. OTHERWISE EVERYTHING WILL BE ENDING UP AT RB AND OTHER CROOKs’ FARMS. I AM SURE BY NOW LEVY REGRETS IN HIS GRAVE FOR HAVING MADE SUCH A MISTAKE TO APPT RB AS VICE.
I think I just have to say this even if it’ll ruffle some feathers.
FACT: Levy(mhsrip) was not a great president. He legacy was aided by soaring copper prices and increased investment in Zambias economy by local and foreign investors. His so called fight against coruption got him into the good books of the like of Tony Blair and Georgy bush, we just have to look at Zimbabwe to see wat happens when you disrespect them.
Fact: RB is not a great president either but his issues will be compounded by this international economic meltdown.
Lets judge him on issues that are not tied to the meltdown, if that’s posible
Fellow Zedians. I am not a prophet but my intuition tells me that in the next three years Zambia will face serious economical turmoil because it has been blessed with a leader who cant see beyond his big mpuno and can’t think between lines. By the way he wasn’t prepared for this challenge but had to take it up because he thought his cloud shown a silver line and so it was a good time for him to make a fortune. Whether we like it or not the economical graph is now on the reverse approaching a syncline. This is a fact we cant run away from as long as our nicopump presido stays in plot1.
Why all of you wasting time to comment on the BORING RB and his ugly ministers such as Masebo, Ba Vera etc? Muletuletela ichifukushi… just don’t comment. And I am not commenting, am advising you people.
So all of a sudden we need your great advice?
Giving up is not a solution. Fighting for our rights and holding the Govt of the day is the beginning of our solutions.
Giving up is not a solution. Fighting for our rights and holding the Govt of the day accountable is the beginning of our solutions.
This “Who Lay” is still around?
I thought Masebo “Are lee tall ba are car pull tea cool chew loo”? Kanshi “er pole are chi lee ma car car”.
Now it’s clear we are headed for disaster. RB has simply no ideas to move the country forward. Food is the most crucial commodity for any pipo but seems RB does not understand this. He’s not giving this matter the priority it deserves. I foresee higher mealie meal prices next year because certainly production will be lower than last farming season given the fact that the fertiliser will be barely affordable to the common farmer. Further the commercial farmers are likely to grow other cash crops and not maize as it will not be profitable to grow maize. RB may not finish his tenure if he’s not careful. Food riots of the 80’s and early 90’s could return.
So Masebo and RB can shake hands after all
Hey Guys! howz it going? how is this place? I was away, So tell me, whats new?
You know I was in the field, in the bush triying to increase the acres of my farm. :d/:d
Only last month Shrek was being heralded as the right choice 4 Zed. All the qualifications that he has will not help. Its not the # of degrees that matter, its the ability to apply common sense to situations that will help someone in their lives. Sata despite his humble education, was the right person for Zed especially with the problems we shall be encountering in the coming few years. He is a practical, pragmatic and courageous leader who does not depend on theorists for his leadership. Tell you the truth, what Zed needs right now is Leadership and Shrek cannot provide that.
rupia banda should or rather i advise him to consult sata and hh on how to manage the country we do not want to go for elections bcoz president banda has is not able to deliver.hh and sata please give banda some ideas.god bless zambia.
RB has failed 2 manage the country pliz wise pipo help him.
we saw it coming ,zambians let us tighten our belts, we are yet to receive and see the shock of our lives.#15,27,30,32 what s up ,a u ok?
Those who voted for RB should not complain. see what the are putting us through. People of Zambia let us not allow politicians to cheat us. Lets wait and see[-(**==**==
Once upon a time, the African peasant farmer ploughed his land with own bulls, sowed his own maize seed from his own barn (‘chilulu’ in East) and his own animals fertilised his own land. The yield was ‘poor’ but it was enough to keep him going for all his life. Then came the ‘white man’ and his brain washed educated African who promised greater yields by hybrid seed (that cannot reproduce). The catch? Use foreign fertiliser and other inputs. Plough with a foreign tractor, running on foreign fuel! Result? Excellent yields but eternal dependence on the ‘white man.’ Meanwhile, far away in the ‘whiteman’s’ land, they are going organic again. :-?:-?
#41 Peter.
I doubt if Paramount Chief Mpezeni should be given that responsibility! You should realise that Sata comes from a royal family. His father was a chief so I do not think that his idea was as innocent as you think.
Our leaders are hopeless and not serious. How can a whole lot of a Haed of State lament about fertiliser being procured from outside when our Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia (NCZ) is just begging for inputs? Surely, can’t we affrd to produce fertiliser? Chilanga Cement and NCZ have the capacity to produce even for the region, with serious capitalisation, if only government was serious!! WE seriously need a serious government! And who soes not know when the planting season starts in Zambia for one not to be prepared?
And Masebo has missed it! How the heck does she expect companies to operate without payment… and when payment comes, it woulod have lost value with the free-fall of the Kwacha?
Cometh the hour, cometh the man.
In three years time there will be cries for RB from all over the country to continue because he will have done miracles! Right now, Sata is thanking his stars that he didn’t win because where would he have started for a start? He would have been busy blaming the previous government and nothing would have progressed. There is a global economic down turn. That is clear and Zambia is not cushioned from this. In the US everyone is wishing Obama to do well in this hard time, but in Zambia, no, many are wishing RB to fail so that they can gloat… ‘I told you!’ Shame.
We are just like our colonial masters, Britain, where the opposition is at daggers drawn against Gordon Brown to pull him down instead of supporting him.
@ Free market Capitalist
What is your obsession with PF? not everyone opposed to the suspect MMD is PF we are just concerned Zambian citizens! you are like a broken record now, why dont you go back to kissing Shikawapasha’s derriere or something! geeeeeeeesh!
#E.R.T
you talk sense!
