Tar the Pedicle, DRC tells Zambia

Share

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has given Zambia the go ahead to tar the pedicle road.

Katanga Province Governor, Moses Katumbi says Zambia can recover the money spent on the road by charging toll gate fees.

Mr. Katumbi says President Joseph Kabila has agreed to the plan by the Zambian Government to tar the road.

He was speaking soon after meeting mines minister, Maxwell Mwale and Copperbelt minister Mwansa Mbulakulima in Ndola, Thursday.

Mr. Katumbi said the meeting discussed how best the Zambian government can access copper concentrates from the DRC.

He said existing relations between Zambia and the DRC should be strengthened to ensure development in both countries.

And Mr. Mbulakulima said the ban on maize exports to the DRC by the Zambian Government is due to the shortage of maize in the country.

Mr. Mbulakulima was answering questions from DRC journalists who wanted to know why the government has banned the export of maize to the former Zaire.

  1. And I hate the fact that Katumbi seems to be an authority which even the entire Zambian govt cannot handle. See what money in the right amount and right currency can do?

  2. Lusaka

I agree with you.Next we will hear that he is actually contesting the presidency in 2011 and our goverment will remain mute.

  3. congolese must be responsible. we did the bridge for them now they want us to do the road. how much does it cost to tar the same road and when do we recover the must through toll gates.

  4. i WONDER HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE THE GOVERNMENT OF ZAMBIA TO RECOVER THE MONEY THAT WILL BE SPENT ON THE ROAD. HOW WILL THE CONGOLE BE COOPEARTING ON THE SAME IN TERMS OF PAYING THE TOLL FEES. BA KABOKE? VAKULOLAVYE.

  5. DRC…do something as well. What about sharing the costs ( 50-50). Congolese will be using the road as well. Katumbissss do something alaa.
    :d/:d/:d/:d/:d/

  6. Baby C
Don’t even think aloud as you may put the idea into his head. That will be the day I decide to become a Zimbabwean, kaleza so.

  7. Why have you(Zambians) given this man so much freedom? You guyas forget easily, this man is not clean.watch out

  8. its the duty of GRZ to tar the roads using taxpayers’s funds but not for the benefit of congolese. if the road is tarred its congolese to be levied. or let katumbi tar the road himself since he made alot of cash through chani then he recovers through toll gate fees.

  9. the thing is when ever Katumbi says a word we turn to agree even when we can cost share we say yes and this road is highly used by them coming into zambia for safety…

  10. But the painful fact is that GRZ will actually go ahead and tar the road, like she needs authority from Katumbi to render a service to her people

  11. katumbi seems to be getting to much into zambian Government.DRC should assist also in the tarring of the pedicle road.

in the other article katumbi was reported saying something on the mines that the government made alot of money from copper when the price was ok and no need to cut on workforce does katumbi have dual citizenship please help me .

  12. 13…the Pedicle Rd is not a priority road for the DRC government because they rarely use it if anything. Its just like a backyard path for them, which is not used that much even by their own people. Actually, 97 per cent of the traffic on that road is Zambian. No wonder they have always been dragging their feet on this issue. I guess we must just go by their suggestion after all its a very useful road to us…it makes Luapula Province easily accessible. But when I look at critically…it doesn’t make sense ayi, its just like renovating neighbours gate just coz you use it more often. What happens when one day you wake up only to find that he has shut it and no more traffic, will he refund?

  13. So there will now be toll fees on top of Congolese border extortion… At least maybe Katumbi is serious about strengthening relations

  14. 21… Katumbi has Zambian roots so he claims…..He says his mother and Mwata Kazembe are cousins, something like that. As for the other suggestions coming from other bloggers on him not being clean and stuff. He may not be clean but we cannot arrest him for now because we risk a serious diplomatic battle…he is a very powerful man in DRC. He is actually in charge of Katanga Province, which has an estimated 10 million population. He is not far from Rupiah who is in charge of an estimated 12 million people.

  15. **==**==**==

Anyway lets just do it,since LPM bridge is a legacy lets have RB road now.

I Mean it wont sound good to name pedicle as Gen Nkunda , kabila or Katumbi road!!! ,Fyabushilu….

  16. WHY DO WE FEAR KATUMBI SO MUCH KANSHI????
Awe this thing of idolising him must come to an end.he is not suppose to tell the zambian government what to do.he is so big headed.

  17. My major fear is how do we overhaul a road that is not within our boundaries? Won’t that be a miscalculation, especially with an unstable country like DRC? Goverments are changed like school prefects in the DRC…suppose some hot head kicks young Kabila out of power and he orders that there will be no more diplomatic relations with Zambia and the borders are shut forthwith. What do we do with our investment on the Pedicle Road? Lets just continue using longer routes because the loss of such a risk might be too huge to comprehend. If DRC was stable like Tanzania, Malawi, Botswana, Namibia and to an extent Angola I will back Kaumbi’s suggestion. But not for a country with hot heads like DRC.

  18. Is taring the pedical road a priority? Lets be careful with the so called Katumbi, Remember the double dealings he had between the GRZ and VJ?

We seem to have more confidence in outsider bringing ideas to us. The westerns told us to sell our mines as a seperate component, we did that, now we are dancing to their song.

Infact iwe katumbi, your country encroached into ours. ~X(

  19. Number 31 and 32…Katumbi is not ordering our Zambian authorities. He is only suggesting a solution to a problem. Try to educate yourselves more on the history of this road right from the days of KK and Mobutu. The DRC has always made it a point that they will never spend money on the Pedicle Rd because its not a priority road to them Period! Maybe if you have used it before you will appreciate their argument. DRC doesn’t use this road, actually it snakes through the most unproductive parts of Katanga. As for the issue of idolizing him…facts are not praises. That man is not a small man though he is a thief. Remember the VJ Katanga saga? Wasn’t it over Katumbi?

  20. If we have to build a longer route just like Mukelabai No. 33 has suggested so be it. After all it will be in our territory.

  21. I was waiting for the Katumbi visit bombshell. More jobs for Congolese labourers as few Zambians will be given permits. With all the savings from pulling out of the All Africa Games, I propose GRZ builds a fly over bridge over Zaire.

  22. Zaire/DRC did little to protect Zambian property and lives through that notorious strip. I still remember stories of entire buses being looted and travellers shot at in what is, for many decades to come, a very unstable country.

If Zambia has money to spare to develop assets outside the country, lets focus instead on the off loader in Dar.

  23. Katumbi i knew u had tricks behind yo cloured smile, it was fake. we build a bridge and u want us to tar yo road, come on just bcoz the late zambian president forgave u,u ar even able to come to zambia freely now u think u and yo gvt can start dreaming that we tar yo gravel road. u ar not thankful. i rest my thots

  24. 37… I agree! That’s the most sensible thing one can do. How do you renovate a rented house with your own money without claiming from the landlord? Supposed you are evicted what happens? will you start removing the paint, carpets, tiles etc?… because obviously the landlord will not bother about what your investments, especially if you are partying in a not so gentleman-like manner. Lets just spend money on the Tuta Road despite it being a longer route to Luapula Province at least its on Zambian soil.

  25. Katumbi is very cunning. If 95% of traffic on pedicle road is Zambian, it will imply that the same tax payers who funded the project will again pay toll gate fees. Why cant we go 50-50 Mr Katumbi??

  26. Imwe mwebalelemba apa mulelembako ifyamano! Some of you do not even seem to know where the Pedicle Rd is. How can you suggest that we continue to use longer routes? Inkama ilipo apa is to recover the cost of building the road. Once such mechanims are in place all these things mulelemba are taken care of! GRZ can reciver the cost of the Rd wihtin three years looking at the amount of traffic travelling through the pedicle Rd.

Bushe njipusheko? Why are roads in Z not marked? No traffic signs? and no indications of kms or distances?

  27. 45…You don’t insult people especially if you are an eratic contributor on serious matters. How do you recover the cost in a volatile environment like DRC? Are you aware that during KK’s days buses and other road users started shunning the Pedicle Rd coz of abuse from their unpaid soldiers and rebels alike? Stability in the DRC is the decider here not that rubbish you are offloading here. Which mechanism can you even put in place in a horrible and scary place like DRC? How do you recover your cost in three years in a lawless state like DRC..supposedly your target motorists begin shunning the route coz of lawlessness? Think mune!

  28. We know the road is valuable no doubt. Roads need proper planning, frequent inspection and proper management. But okey chishinka I don’t know where the damn road is.

  29. Katumbi, Katumbi!!!! from a fugitive wanted by the Zambian Government to Governor and now discuss biletral agreements with the Zambian Government.

  30. These are fair concerns by DRC Katanga region Governor – though I am not sure – Moses Katumbi.

However, I am against the issue of tarring that Pedicle Road even if money can be realised through toll gates! What, I recommend is that GRZ must access free satellite images of that area and seek expert analysts for such’s usage to explore a possibility of building a new road on the Zambian Soil since the Pedicle Road is in a foreign country. In all, please, find ways of applying a similar to Brig. Gen. Miyanda’s Village Concept to create new infrastructure to link necessary places on our own Zambian soil, instead of building roads in rebel-enforced war zone DRC.

  31. I never saw a congolese vehicle on the pedicle on the few occasions i used it but i remember a place called gabon which was as muddy as hell. yes, the zambian govt should tar it.

  32. i usually question the heads of most Zedians esp your politicians who for many years have taken you for granted.Mukachimona paka katumbi akamiteke!that guy remember,he was a very serious friend of Titus..chani’tambabashila’ Namu 2011 muzalila,na bola efyo mulushila. Its only that you Zedians used to be my friends and classmates otherwise bwafya coz we never choose were we want to be born.

  33. ” Katanga Province Governor, Moses Katumbi says Zambia can recover the money spent on the road by charging toll gate fees. ”

Tres francais. 🙂 Leave it to the French up the barrocades.

Although I have heard that they do work although I have not driven in France and don’t know how much of a nuisance they are in practice.

  34. What i think is about the boundries which were made during the colonial rule, if you look at the pedicle road you would not know that you are in DR Congo. The foot on the map of Zambia was suppose to be a Zambian soil. No wonder the DR Congo govt is not worried about the road because the road will only benefit Zambians who travel from Mufulira to Mansa which is short route via chembe bridge.Travelling in that road you will not find any buildings for DR Congo until you reach near the bridge where you will find Imigration officers from Dr Congo.

  35. Toll gates money will can not recover the cost of building the road beacase they trucks that will use the road are Zambians truck moving from Copperbelt to Luapula. There is no truck from Dr Congo which uses that route. I think Bwana Katumbi knows well that DR Congo’s benefit to the road is nil.

  36. THIS GUY KATUMBI THINKS BUSINESS. I LIKE HIS THINKING-CHARGING A “TOLL GATE FEE”. THATS ONE WAY FORWARD TO MAKE MONEY FOR MAINTAINING THE ROADS. THERE ARE SO MANY BRIDGES IN ZAMBIA THAT QUALIFY FOR TOLL CHARGES INCLUDING KAFUE, CHAMBESHI,KARIBA, MUKUKU (SAMFYA), ETC. THEY DO IT ALLOVER THE WORLD. I CAN’T UNDERSTAND WHY OUR POLITICIANS ARE SO DULL AS NOT TO THINK OF SUCH SIMPLE IDEA. AND PLEASE BUILD A PROPER ROAD IN PEDICLE. NOT AKA RAZOR BLADE LIKE THE ROADS IN ZAMBIA. PLEASE, COPY FROM BOTSWANA, SOUTH AFRICA, OR NAMIBIA. BOTSWANA HAS THE BEST ROADS IN THE REGION.

  37. THE OTHER WORD OF CAUTION IS THAT THERE MUST BE WRITTEN CONFIRMATION FROM THE DCR GOVT THAT GRANTS ZAMBIA THE PERMISSION TO TARR PEDICLE ROAD. AND THAT DOCUMENT MUST BE SIGNED BY THE HIGHEST AUTHORITY IN GOVT (THE PRESIDENT OF DRC AND OTHERS). AND THE CONTRACT MUST STIPULATE OPENNESS. ETC, ETC.

  38. I KNOW OF A ZAMBIAN FRIEND HERE WHO DID ENGINEERING ALONG THE LINES OF TRANSPORT NETWORK/CIVIL ENGINEERING. HE IS ALWAYS CONSULTED (THRU HIS COMPANY) BEFORE ANY UNDERGROUND SYSTEM, ROAD BRIDGE, ETC IS BUILT. THE ZAMBIAN GOVT SHOULD BE USING SUCH PEOPLE. HE TOLD AT ONE TIME HE EVEN APPROACHED THE ZAMBIAN AUTHORITIES TO OFFER HIS SERVICE ON ROAD AND RAIL NETWORKS. BUT AS USUAL HE WAS IGNORED. MOST PROBABLY COZ HE’S ZAMBIAN. BUT THIS IS THE MAN HIGHLY RESPECTED HERE WHERE THEY KNOW AND APPRECIATE EXPERTISE.

  39. That is African mentality :d When they see you can afford, then they want you to cover the whole bill :o. Shame on DRC[-([-([-([-(

  40. Mr. Katumbi shut up commenting every now and then on Zambian issues. You fled the country as a Plunderer. Why should Zambian Government tar the road in Congo when there roads in Zambia that need urgent attention!! Katumbi has seen Zambian Government a soft spot. The other day he was talking about the Zambian mines. Katumbi look after your diomond mines in DRC and leave Zambians to do their affairs. Mr. Katumbi tar that road it is in your DRC, after the bridge, it is now road.

When war erapts in DRC, no Zambian will use that road. [-x[-x[-x

  41. Here is a chance to reclaim our land. That pedicle belongs to Zambia. We build the road and then a wall alongside. We see any Kaboke trying to get over the wall…kick thier butts. Thats how you build a great nation…. expansionism.

  42. What is Katumbi’s position on the Harrassment suffered by Zambian travellers at the hands of Kabokes. Congolese in the part of DRC live off Zambians. They are so lazy they dont do agriculture. They just dance to Rhumba music, all day. When they are hungry, they harass Zambian travellers. You never see a farm near Pedicle road. they are hopelessly lazy chaps.

  43. Bane,
I think that its not a wise idea to build a road in such an unstable country like Congo.I have used that road before it so bushy and unsafe. So you guys who are claiming that we tar the road you have never even used that road you have no idea of what you are supporting.Lets maintian Tuta road and find possibly another way Copperblet can be connected to it but not through Kapiri it will make more sense.Chembe bridge should have been a joint venture not Zambia funding alone.Infact politician a just a bunch of criminals lets get experts to guide on this.Am out ni friday lelo!

  44. #2 Ba Moze. The Pedicle road leads to no where except from Zambia into Zambia and has no real commercial value to the congolese. Come to think of it even for Zambia since my province has no more fish to take to CB

  45. YES TAR THE PEDICLE SO WE ROB FROM STUPID ZAMBIANS!!!!!!!!!!WHAT HAPPENED TO COMMON SENSE,HAVE WE REACHED THE EXTENT OF OUR IMAGINATION?ARE OUR BRAINS MEANT TO EXPIRE NO IDEAS?NO THINKLING? CHINA BUILT A ROAD TO GO TO LUAPULA WHY DON’T WE USE IT? AFRICANS DO WE WANT EUROPEANS TO TELL US WHERE TO SIT AGAIN?AREN’T WE INDEPENDENT I WONDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
