Chinese miner killed in unsafe mine in Sinazongwe

Share

A Chinese national has died in a mine accident at the Chinese Collum Coal Mine (CCCM) in Sinazongwe district in Southern Province.

Sinazongwe District Commissioner (DC) Mungoni Simulilika confirmed the development to ZANIS that Wu Ping aged 50 died yesterday.

Mr Simulilika said Mr Ping was trapped underground at shaft three as he was coming out of the mine.

He disclosed that his body was taken to Choma Hospital Mortuary.

Nkandabwe ward Councilor Partson Mangunje who was at the scene of the accident when they were retrieving the body the underground said the incident occurred at 17 hours.

Mr Mangunje explained that the stones underground collapsed, trapping Mr Ping, who died on the spot.

He said safety measures at the mine were not being followed as the pillars put underground were not strong enough to support the weight of the stones.

The Nkandabwe ward Councilor has called on the Safety Department under the Ministry of Mines to close CCCM until proper safety measures were put in place to protect people’s lives.

On 29 December one person died in a mine accident while the other one was seriously injured at the CCCM.

Weddy Kantolo 24 died in the underground when the top layer in the tunnel collapsed on him as he was building it.

Shadrick Siandima 29 was also injured and admitted at the Maamba Hospital.

  1. This mine has been in the news over their lack of safety more than once. Much as the loss of life is a sad event regardless of who it is, I’m inclined to think that the owners will pay a little more attention to safety at this mine seeing that one of their own has lost his life.

  2. …..good show, isn`t this the same Mine where a Minister wept when she found Zambian digging Coal without necessary equipment or protective clothing?

These Chinese chaps should learn a stern lesson….!

. Man pliz, have a soul, you don’t necessarily need to argue in a discussion especially when you don’t have anything to say.

  4. Sad as it may be, i suppose when its one of them (chinese) the better. That way, thet’ll understand why this fuss we make on “safety”. Anyway, rest in peace. Nipa Zed pano, efyo iya.

  5. #7, sorry if it seem so rough but the truth is,somewhere last year the Deputy minister of labour visited the place and found Zambian coal miners without safety boots and safety clothing. The minister did not hide his disppointment to these chinese officials. But for chinese it was business as usual after all its just one of those govt officials. The point is even in China miners die everydsy coz generally chinese miningsafety satndards are below par and they are very resistant to adopting new/existing ones.Iam not a devil but a realist.

  6. **==**==**== so this is what they had been weting for!!
DANGERS were forseen due to poor safety,nw it has happened, mwebantu muleumfwa twapapata…..

  7. Sorry about the death, but the Chinese are learning it a hard way, they survived Chambishi, but uku kwena death yabekata.

  8. It is sad that someone died, maybe now our corrupt govt and the Chinese govt. can finally adress the safety issues in the mines! it is disgusting that our own government does not ensure that safety standards are up to acratch! In addition when there is massive unemployment in Zambia, how can the govt. allow the Chinese to bring in their own miners?? thats just ridiculous!

  9. We need to investigate the operation of Chinese owned mines. They have a poor mining record as far as safety is concerned. Yes a life was lost which is sad. On this one I’ll turn the other cheek.

  10. Hope this dude has relatives to bury him. In China, mine safefy record is as bad as their human rights record. This should be a lesson to everyone…..

  11. This mine is open because there is no alternative for employment in that area, so the govt. can afford to turn a blind eye. Otherwise, what would they do better? Poverty is a big sin!

  12. May the Souls of those that died rest in peace. To the injured, I wish him quick recovery.

When is the body of the Chinese being flown back to China, xie xie (Chinese “thank you” word)?

On “He said safety measures at the mine were not being followed as the pillars put underground were not strong enough to support the weight of the stones,” I wouls like to re-echo the Nkandabwe Ward Councillor’s words to close the said mine until the infrastructure has been inspected for various work habitable-ness.

Whats your problem? The problem with you is that you apologise even for saying the truth. The director ni namayo! simple. where is the problem? 😕

  15. #29, Ba Moze,

The heart of a 50 year old Chinese man is younger than that of a 37 year old Zambian male, generally

  16. Ba Moze.

Ba Eveln King Nabadila umulilo ati nshakwata umucinshi on the headline Ya Zambia Airways, she thought I was refering to her when I said Namayo.

Matworld was not refering to you. He is a nice guy. He has in fact apologised. Forgive him. Aliba fye bwino. Elo munensu sana. Tell him you have forgiven him, please?[-o<

  18. Why has the gevernment and the Mines Safety Department allowed this mine to be operating under such unsafe conditions? This is not the first time that a life has been lost at the mine, surely the MSD should have put up preventive measures to avoid a recurrence. This just shows how corrupt and weak our sytem is. Wake up you guys before more life is lost.

  19. How many times have there been accidents in Chinese mines due to negligence of seurity? remeber that there wasas once rukus on the c cb over such incidnets? why do we let sub standrd go by, dont we have a board that is suppose to regulate mine operators??

  20. In China when one dies, the most polite way of informing people about the death is that “he has stopped eating rice”

  21. LT, do some research first and write proper articles. You are now insulting my intelligence. It is not stones, “BUT ROCKS” that collapsed.

  22. Bad indeed for the death, but the chaps must learn a lesson out of this. I personaly have been at the mine site the safety measures are poorer. It is the same mine where Alice Simango, cried when she discovered that people were working under poor conditions but the chineese themselves don’t mind all the like is quantity and not quality!

  23. #39 Mbo boi change ur id..ishina kwati lya ng’ombe… :-?:-?:-?infact leave king Cobra alone if u ve nothing to bog…
but anyway tell me boi,uko ku china tawaishibako ichimwaiche chimo so by the name of Kasonde 1st or 2nd yr..chalibutwike from Russia..
plz chitelize at ba Doc balekufuluka…

  24. Ever since the Chinase invstors have come they have broken the safety record for ZCCM, accident are now high in the mining sector. The then, Southern Province minister was fired from her ministeral position when she expressed concerns on the safety altitude of the Chinase investors and this was on this same mine. Life is precious who ever has dies is precious. The management at this mine should put measures in place to ensure that safety is followed. Inasmuchas I know is that the mine safety department is one of the toughest department, now you know how it is when it comes to money, no one is tough.

  25. #15 Sharp Shooter what language is that my you please translate for me or somebody else who knows that language do it for me

  26. Hey, stop crying over one dead chinese, they are to blame for sub standards in the mines. Dont worry there are hundreds of million chinese ‘spares’

  27. Too bad but I can’t believe some comments here. What’s good about mocking the deceased? No matter his origins, the man is dead & he died in a fatal accident. If you have no sympathy, at least please some respect by being silent.

  28. If this incident happened in China, it wouldn’t even be on the news at all. You know how the mine owners handle these in China, put it in the bodybag and give 200USD bucks to the dead one’s parents, and it’s it. It’s no big deal for Chinese. Thse accidents happen in China every single day because we have too many people anyway.

  29. China has never had a goog record on Safety Standards, recently they poisoned children with fake powdered milk. They even make fake eggs. To all our zambian brothers who have lost lives, rest in peace. To the Chinese who died, Cheers for not following safety rules.

  30. #56(Nemwine)

Its Russian.Rougly translated as”I just speak the truth.Chinese dont do their jobs nicely.Thats not good for us Zambians”.

I hope i have translated it to your satisfaction.

  31. “…were retrieving the body the underground said the incident occurred at 17 hours.”

LT, YOUR JOURNALISM STANDARDS ARE TERRIBLY LOW. SOMEONE HAS ALREADY MENTIONED THAT YOU WROTE, AND I QUOTE, “STONES FAIL”. HONESTLY, EVEN IF ITS BEMBA-ENGLISH, YOU SHOULD USE YOUR COMMON SENSES TO KNOW THAT ITS ROCK AND NOT STONES.

  32. TO THOSE PEOPLE WHO THINK CHINESE ARE LEARNING A LESSON-YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME WITH SUCH COMMENTS. CHINESE DO NOT SIMPLY RESPECT HUMAN LIFE. THEIR HUMAN RIGHTS RECORD IS BELOW FREEZING POINT. EXPECTING THE CHINESE TO LEARN A LESSON AND IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND SAFETY CONDITIONS IN THE MINES IS PIPEDREAM. DURING THE FLOODS AND EARTH TREMOUR B4 THE CHINESE OLYMPICS WHEN MASSIVELY PEOPLE DIED, THEY ACTED JUST TO SERVE THE GOVT FACE. NOT THAT THEY WOULD HAVE BOTHER TO EXHUME THOSE WHO WERE STILL TRAPPED IF THE WORLD’S FOCUS WASN’T ON CHINA. REMEMBER THE TIANAMEN SQUARE, MASS STUDENT SHOOT DOWN?

  33. IT IS THE ZAMBIAN GOVT’s RESPONSIBILITY TO ENFORCE STERN HEALTH AND SAFETY LAWS TO SERVE MAINLY THE ZAMBIAN CITIZENS FOR WHOSE LIVES WE SO MUCH CARE ABOUT. BUT, CONSIDERING THE CORRUPTINESS OF ALL ZAMBIAN GOVTs, THATS ALSO A PIPEDREAM. AMA POLITICIANS (PRESIDENTS AND MINISTERS, ETC) BALILYA NDALAMA KALE. BALIFUTA NA PAKANWA. WHERE IS BA SATA. HIM SPEAKS FOR ZAMBIANS, AND SADLY HATED FOR THAT. ITS A SHAME.

  34. the MSA in kitwe i the most corrupt government agency in zambia. little wonder bashi mine including amachocholi balefwila.

  35. In China there is a traditon that no fear of death. That’s really horrible things that if people are not scared of death.

Maybe in Zambian owned company there is no this kind of accident, but why the life expectancy in Zambia is only 37years old?
Safety record in China mining Company is really low, but why the life expectancy is more than 70years old?
The poor Human right record in China is not because of the vast chinese people, only because that samll group of communist who ruling the country.

  36. these chinese mine operaters have been warned countless times about safety.many zambians have died as a result of chinese mine safety negligence and now it’s one of them.hope it’ll get to them now.#1 i think it would be more appropriate to pour out some rice wine instead, know what i mean? ;););)

  37. #36, Ba biggie, on what facts do you base your comment?

#70, Peter. I think too much BBC and CNN isn’t doing you any good.

  38. Does the mine safety dept exist? Why should this mind still be operating when everyone knows that they have compromised for a long time. Wake up mine safety dept.

  39. Hey, all peter said were factual. Have you ever been to China before? Chinese have been abusing human’s live for over 5000 years. it is not new. It is not what BBC or CNN say. Maybe you have been watching too much chinese communist propaganda

  40. This is want corruption can do. The Minister wept at this very mine citing poor conditions and the mine being unsafe.

Unfortunately MSD went to this mine. The questions MSD needs to ans are

    1. Did they put Preventive Actions in Place?
    2. What Action plans were put in place to prevent loss of lives and property?
    3. Who was responsible for ensuring that the action plan was being implemented?

otherwise someone at MSD must go.

  41. pipo this issue isnt good in both Zed and Chin. It is our gvt failiar 2 empliment measures on paper. chin n zed wake up yo pipo gona be wiped away by unsafe conditions
