Government has spent K6.6 billion on the procurement of 150 vehicles for chiefs in the country.
Local Government and Housing Deputy Minister, Lwipa Puma, who confirmed the development in Parliament today, said another K4.9 billion will be spend on the procurement of 136 vehicles for the remaining 136 chiefs in the country.
Dr Puma said out of the K4.9 billion, government has so far sent K1.3 billion towards the procurement another consignment of chief’s vehicles from Japan.
He, further, said the remaining funds will be sent to Japan soon to ensure that all the chiefs received vehicles this year.
Mr Puma was responding to a question raised by Mfuwe MP, Mwimba Malama, who wanted to know how much government has spent on the procurement of vehicles for chiefs in the country.
Dr Puma also disclosed that government was buying chiefs vehicles on a loan basis adding that government will recover loans from chiefs’ subsidies over the period of five years.

In Zambia, a Japanese reconditioned vehicle is daiman. If you go to Japan, they crush the vehicles, recycling most of the components. Tyres are turned into tartan for use in playing fields, metal melted for something else, etc.

Hey Bloggers. Where is INFECTED MEAT nowadays ?
Doc. Do you think the chiefs needs or probably better assets that can make them buy cars. Assets such as Tractors, Irrigation equipment that would make them do serious farming and development of such state farms which you guys are talking about. The cars will just enslave them, who’s paying for fuel and maintenance? I agree that they deserve a decent life but teach them how to fish dont give them fish

Give them a 3:-o with a Wheelbarrow behind.
Thankyou
Now let me go and eat!! Kuti walala ne nsala!!
“Umulembwe pa Keyboard” Ba Maureen you have made me laugh.:d
These vehicles are brand new GXs and we have no roads accessible in all chiefdoms. Do you now know why lack of proper education is a curse? These chiefs will get these vehicles, fail to mainatain them as the roads are deplorable and most of them may die anyway for lack of driving skills and what follows? Wrangles over the thrown with politicians supporting who should be chief. And you think this is normal? PF and Sata should cooperate with an intelligent visionary leader if these MMD crooks are to be dethrowned. Sata and PF will NEVER beat the MMD. We are not progressing in a normal way. We are retrogressing and believe you me OBAMA may never visit us unless things change significantly.

vehicles ? :-w:-?
They got no roads, no fuel and most importantly no food. will they eat those vehicles?
b-) has misplaced our priorities.
it would have been better if they asked for small tractors to improve yields.
@#$%$# chiefs and b-)
Missed priorities,is it necessary to spend that much now when we are going through economic turbulences. That money could have been used to bail out companies that going under.Government would have benefited by way of getting PAYE from workers of this companies, than throwing this money into the bottomless pits.
Since when has it happened, recovery of loans from chief’s subsidies???? Will wait and see. Are we learning here that govt has got nothing to spend all those billions on?
Bakabalwe pa zed kwena balelila :)>-
A white dude making a speech turned to his right and called a black dude “Mr President” !!!
Country: United States of America
=d>=d>=d>=d>=d>=d>=d>
My guess is that Govt has probably been charging big investors loss of land loyalties (lumwana, Kansanshi etc) and chiefs never saw these dues, which is fine because some chiefs dont have that kind of revenue. But my worry is that we are throwing good money to bad, better help them start serious food production which must be priority ryte now for our country. Dr. Puma sell those brand new cars to the investors and order proper assets for our chiefs lets not spoil them by blinding them. Worse my chief Mpezeni he will always be in Lusaka to have his VX repaired.
and they say they don’t have money for NCZ??? :-l:-l:-l
people, after seeing obamania i think it’s time muno mu zambia we started identifying who among our generation can take up leadership challenges ..somebody with a vision, somebody with a sound economical mind.somebody who realy understands problems affecting us and has tangible ideas of how we can solve them. somebody who can galvanise the all country to have one goal development . Lets float names. Natampa, ine i float CHIBAMBA KANYAMA bambi ati
Shani. Ni generation change ka. 50 and below
RB has rewarded them for what he thinks they voted for him, Bribary this old man will eat him!!!!!
Chibamba Kanyama may be a good guy but I would rather go with either Prof. Chirwa or Caleb Fundanga for the folowing reasons. You need a president who can engage the world through his or her experiences and tackle issues from a knowledgeable point of view instead of being a Reegan with a set of papers from the advisers. Did you see how OBAMA delivered the speech withou a piece of paper in his hands? He is the first American president to do that. What can you say? Did you see how humiliated Clinton looked as OBAMA delivered his speech. Times do change and truelly whoever thought Clinton was the best had never seen OBAMA.
The Chiefs should have gone to the Banks and get loans instead of wasting tax payer’s money, How are these Chiefs going to maintain these vehicles? Routine maintenance, gas, insurance and tires the list is endless. The money is in millions of dollars it could have gone in job creation so there is more people working more money coming into the treasury. If these Chiefs have no common sense let them continue using bicycles and cows for transportation.Zambia all we have is failed leadership. :-?:-?:-?:-?
The MMD is trying to meet election promises.
THE INTELIGENTIA, thank you so much for your positive posting and i have taken note.however i was sckeptical about the proffesor.i feel he has been out for too long.he can have problems in understandind some of the problems we encounter especially on the social point of view.
Hello Govt….’we have a patient in Russia, aspiring young doctor’. Can anyone in Government put him first? :-w
#37, thank you for your positive comment. I have every faith that anyone who was born and educated in Zambia would have no problems with working with zambians. Prof. Chirwa for instance is a man you would never even imagine has been abroad. He is so down to earth and socialises so well irrespective of audience. Caleb Fundanga too, was out for sometime until LPM requested him to come back. I really don’t see any problems with an intellectul leading Zambia. Let us try and engage the world and we also learn from the world instead of just begging without positive thoughts. Sata is truelly a waste of our time in this day and era. let us move forward.
That money would really help the guy in Russia that is in dire need of medical assistance…
I certainly do not understand the roles of chiefs in Zambia. They are just too many of them.
This is just a waste of money when most people are go hungry everyday. Just useless when other nations are tightening up there spending. After another three years or after each election the chiefs will be asking for new cars. What a big joke Zambia is in. Is Zambia facing any credit crunch? I think the answer is a Big NO!
Chiefs have no use anymore in Zambia….try something else alah!
The seat/throne of kings and chiefs is divine period whether the chief or king like the litunga is educated or not they deserve great earthly homage. So as you comment kindly show respect.
Chiefs are supposed to be traditional and ride like their ancestors. The government is selling out by giving these chiefs western comforts , instead I suggest mwata kazembe should be transported on peoples backs and the litunga should ride the nalikwanda everywhere. There is a global recession and these chiefs are just being bribed with cars in exchange for their support.
# 44
:d
You are absolutely right. those chaps have no use, apart from adding expenses on tax-payers. Just imagine, asking for help from governemnt to expand a palace…a chief.
It was never head of when my Grandfather was a Chief. Chief in fact identified and helped poor people in their communities…alas..not any more!
Good news pa mfumu.
This is a ka nice campaign strategy by the Govt…VJ is still proving to be unstoppable!! :-w
Its amazing how America a developed country is thightening up its belt with this recession and our Nyama Soya is on a spending spree with cars now for chiefs, what next??. Ati tisiyana kuganiza

YAH! PA ZED……..NO PRIORITIES :d
Why not spend that much at UTH? No priorities as rightly put by #51. Kamulefwafye nga mwaya ku South
# 44 I do indeed salute you , but you missed my point . what is the historical exgenesis of kingdoms ? the only king we have in zambia is the litunga. Needless to say I have great respect for paramount chiefs.
#39 Ba guy imwe mulisaka sana. Stop deluding yourself. Zambia can be led by professors and still be the same. You can have Obama as president, Clinton as vice, JFK as whatever minister and still fail.
The problems Zambia is faced with are not due to luck of knowledge/intelligience in leadership no. Your country has an economist at the moment as the head. He has people with PHDs in his goverment but I can put my house on it, nothing will change.
As long as people continue with this petiness and puting personal gains first, your country will always be the same. It`s amazing how people never learn despite being in developed countries.
You “primadona”.

how u doin , by the way how is Mweshi doing
propaganda for 2011 rupiah kuya bebele!! we know all yo tricks we watching u bruh.. AKULU MPHUNO trying to be slick lol!!! twaigwililapokudala!!!! 😕
This is purely POLITICAL MASTURBATION! What a wastage of money, our priorities in Zambia are so wrong. They may need vehicles but why should they cost so much. RB naeve!
This is a total of USD1,289,062.5 (at USD1=ZmK5,120) [-(. a) Why are we spending this much money on the chiefs? b) Do they deserve it? c) Where is the money going to come from? d) What type of vehicles are these? e) Who is going to pick up the tab for servicing these vehicles. And then there is an additional ZmK4.9 billion, which is equivalent to USD955,000. Shouldn’t we be using the money on education and health?:d
Oops I forgat that the vehicles will need gas too, remember that some preside over vast territories!
meant to say ‘forgot’
In the Olden Golden years chiefs did not have vehicles, but suprizing thats the time they had the respect& administered their kindoms better. Now they have been corrupted with Nissan Patrols, 4X4’s, DSTv’s & have stopped being chiefs. They are now heavily compromised.Chiefship is being used as a means of income, come elections year they are always busy recieveing political party presidents who generously donate to them. Shame on the current crop of Chiefs. One Lamba chief even gives Kaloba (Lunda lunda). Ha. I respect the Lozi chief though I’m not lozi. He has kept his diginity.
Can these Chiefs later condemn the Government of the Day? I wonder because this is being done just after elections to appease them. I now know why they are the first to be paraded and shown singing praise of the MMD Govt., More vehicles, more DSTV watching. One chief has become glued to Wrestlemania, he does not leave the TV no matter what problems are in the chief-dom. I think they need to work hard to regain respect or youth of today will see them as irrelevant hence in future they will be sidelined. Rememebr KK once clipped their powers & used them to dance for him at airports.
**== 6.6 billion for vechicals y???????pa zed we want to be bosses when we are not.So every one in the high office should be well luked wen at the end of the day corrupt the poor………….Icant wait for the judgement day to come so the all those thieves are brought tobook by God………Remeber u will all die n be perished
May God deliver ths so called Govt for using loads of money over useless things.
These chiefs are now using these cars to go right into the fields to inspect their crops!!
Are Chiefs vehicles more important than medical equipment for our hospitals? Rubish this gov lack priorities.
When ever the APAMWAMBA (APAM)get sick, even if it is hallucination or tummies full due toover-eating they quickly rush them to Milpak Clinic or Morningside in South Africa, at tax payers cost. When the Govt., is setting up priorities, they channel money to useless NCC & Chiefs vehicles. Yaba tuka la ilishanya fye? Who shall deliver us?@# 😕
#32 walikwata amano for you to see chibamba kanyama as a presida seed.yes its true we need to have a president we can be proud of not thes pres we been haven.talk of brain chituwo, nevers mumba.
This government is a shame. How do you waste all that money on vehicle for chiefs? I think the government has no proper economic Advisors.
Campaign strategy. if MMD wins again in 2011 in rural areas ati bawina shani. Any way i agree with most of the bloggers, this is third priority. empowering these chiefs with farming equipment would have been better. wrong move ba govt!!!
Why can’t the Government spend that Tax-payers money to run Luanshya Mine instead of buying vehicles for chiefs. This is just a sign of not being serious as a Government. That is why the MMD government has failed to delivery. This thinking does not require to be highly qualified,it is just wisdom.Thi country is blessed with abundant natural resources,I don’t why Zambians should suffer? Listen to Bob Marley’s song title Rat race.
….so we do have that kind of money after all?
Nonsense!!!! What a way to priortise Govt spending when the health infastructure is in a deplorable state. Was at UTH in December and garthered the whole country depends on one mulfuntioning CT scanner. This equipment is worth about only $35,000
Please apply moral and holistic thinking.
Message to the chiefs: You can get your vehicles, your sugar, your fertilizer, you name it…….but let me tell you one thing, there’s no rigging in 2011.
Pipo let me ask a question… what is the relevance of chiefs in Zambia other than rubber stamping these politicians, what social or economic function do they perform. abash chiefdom let the ward councilors and mps do their job. for goodness sake that money would have restocked medical supplies in the rural areas…. what logic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The GOVT buying vehicles for the chiefs, does this sound strange? Not at all. The investors who have chosen to go rural in tourism bribe these chiefs to have it easy on any thing they may need in those areas. Them chiefs allow the investors to kill animals like the lions for the skins, only one animal is bought but they are allowed to kill as many. these chiefs seal their mouths. the just ended elections, the chiefs are now having a big Thanks from the GOVT, some of them dont even use these vehicles but vima nephews and cousins of theirs. There is alot of rubbish in our nation. Give the agriculture equipment for development not pose with big 4x4s please.
It is this type of patronage that wil condemn us to perpetual poverty. Granted chiefs deserve some respect but does the tax payer have to subsidise their evry need? Let us get our priorities right and put resources to more pressing areas such as medical facilities, paying teachers, nurses, policemen and settling pension paymnets on time.
Bushe imfumu ishi shali kwata na ma driving licence?
Neil Kinnock once asked Margaret Thatcher a question in Parliament and I quote ‘Prime Minister, when does a sweetener become a bribe?’. This is applicable here. A sweetener only becomes a briibe when the person who was offering that sweetener asks for a favour. And these chiefs are receiving these vehicles in return for ……supporting the people who made them available to them. It is actually a corrupt act. Money should have been given to the House of chiefs and let the chiefs decide what they would need for themselves.
ma rubbish!!
this is not the first time these guys have been given vehicles.
