Zambian youths lack maturity, Joyce Nonde

Share

Federation for Free Trade Union of Zambia (FFTUZ) President, Joyce Nonde has challenged the youths in the country to stand up and be proactive if they are to take up positions in politics.

Mrs. Nonde said the youths in the country are not given leadership position because they are dormant and luck understanding on issues.

She said young people need to be proactive and change there attitudes and face the challenge in order to be leaders.

Mrs. Nonde said politicians need maturity but that most youths in the country lack that and are therefore used by politicians for violence purposes.

And the Global Justice Zambia has implored politicians in the country to learn from America and groom the youths if Zambia was to develop politically, economically and socially.

Global Justice Zambia Executive Director John Phiri also said Zambia risks being in a leadership crisis if youths were not groomed to take up political leadership in the country.

He said there is need for old politicians in the country to groom the new generation that could push the country forward.

He said for a long time now, youths have been used by older politicians only as agents of violence and political hooliganism.

Mr. Phiri said this in an interview with ZANIS at the American centre after giving a presentation of his observation of last year’s United States historical election where he represented Zambia as an international election observer.

He said there was need for politicians to invest in the youths, who are future leaders, adding they should only involve them in issue based politics.

He said politicians should put in place a deliberate policy that will ensure that the youths were prepared for leadership transition.

Mr. Phiri added that politicians should not look at the youths as threats but as partners in the development of the country.

He said the United States has shown the world, including Zambia, that investing in young people will result in social, political and economic development.

  1. “Obama issued executive orders to tighten ethics rules, enhance Freedom of Information Act rules and freeze the salaries of White House officials who earn more than $100,000.”
    ANYTHING CLOSE TO OUR SITUATION?

  2. Its empowerment that the youth needs ( remeber old dogs never learn new tricks) but the older generation is greedy and selfish

  3. Who told Nonde that we lack maturity? We the youths of today we have demonstrated so much maturity in all spheres of life. What type of maturity is she talking about?I thought we are a generation of information, and a well informed youth like us will always make informed choices thereby exhibiting maturity. We are well able and prepared to take up leadership roles, just retire and never hide behind the immaturity you talking about. No sense !

  4. Nonde is missing the point. She wants a job herself in govt and wants to justify her corrupt appointment by stating that the youths are immature. She heads a trade union, right, what has her trade union done to enhance youth development amongst her members? She was an accomplice to Chiluba in destroying ZCTU. Has hse ever mentioned that the split between Unions weakens them? I hate people who use their mouths before their brains and believe me, this woman is as empty as SATA and Chiluba. Don’t ever listen to her warped thoughts. If she has children and she calls them immature, what did she teach them as a mother? Some people are not worth covering because they waste national time.

  5. As regards to “Mrs. Nonde said the youths in the country are not given leadership position because they are dormant and luck understanding on issues”, I, perseonally as a Youth, do not want to be given leadership on a silver plate, but I MUST to be a LEADER through my own hard work. There is no time for me to wait for some failed old character in his own life to GIVE me a leadership position. I can do it by myself by defying the odd order of ranks by simply showing that I am a force to reckon with.

On “He said for a long time now, youths have been used by older politicians only as agents of violence and political hooliganism”, this is TRUE because the YOUTHS being referred to a myopic.

They fail for read properly and understand what is in the daily news. Some choose to be blindfolded in broad day-light just because of tribal manners that have been instilled in them by old tribalists who have outlived their usefulness in politics.

However, all is not lost as most youth Zambians have to been to school atleast upto Grade 12 and with a tweak I am positive that they can change their behaviour and start working hard to find themselves in positions that be – especially political ones. Thus, 2011 elections are a defining moment in our Nation’s history and all normal youths must vote for a fit President.

Zambia is a very rich country save for the mismanagement of our resources that has been done over 44 years through overstaying in political power, corrupt due to excitement, etc.

  8. # 22 ur off the topic. Thats why nonde is saying u lack purpose.
Main exports; u put copper and minerals separately, men! serve my neurons.

  9. ”Mrs. Nonde said the youths in the country are not given leadership position because they are dormant and luck understanding on issues.”

Yes,Nonde is right especially on this blog, too many chaps who lack understanding of even basic things no wonder every topic on this blog is full of crap comments! The reasoning by some bloggers makes you wonder how old how old most bloggers are here.shyaaaaaaa!

In looking at this light, the youths have a big role to play as the life expectancy “42 years (men), 42 years (women) (UN)” entails that Zambian people who are youths (16 – 35 years old) have to assume political leadership positions so that the can take our great nation to higher heights where under-educates have fail to get us to.

If we for argument’s sake use the life expetancy of 42 yr as (42 +/- 5) years, it only fare for Zambia to have a President who is about 47 years old maximum so that we do not have to waste money in evacuting him/her for treatment abroad or through a Presidential bye-election. This applies to all Consitutional offices and the Civil Service.

  12. 3. ako kanono ba nevers,

Thats the immaturity she is talking about.Lacking the understanding of fundamental issues. The US as a nation-state has existed for over 200 years plus with its imperfect system yet been progressively making it better. It is only in 1967 since 1893 that the issues of social justice and ownership of the owned resistantly started becoming a moral issue.Zambia is a young nation less than 46 years as a nation-state yet you want to equate to to the US.What kind of comparative politics is that?Look at the feudal states of Europe still struggling with democracy yet have existed for hundreds of years. Our young democracy is on course and nurturing well for the better.

  13. Our politicians promote the ‘Party Cadre Mentality’. How on earth do you expect us the ‘Mwaices’ to speak freely without reprisals!! Those are double standards and if you have nothing constructive to talk about, please shut your gob!! Borrowing ideas from Obama’s strategy could probably help. Obama empowered and highlighted the value of the youth vote/ role in politics and this led to higher numbers as seen in the elections. NOW WHAT HAS ANYONE DONE TO EMPOWER US THE ‘MWAICES’…ZERO!! So please quit playing the blame game and come up with something containing some substance…atleast a little going by your standards, Nonde!! :-w:-w:-w:-w

  14. Clearly, this is a direct hit at all of you who still think your only hope is in people who are past the bibilical life span. As youths, why should we still cling to the old guards???? Using Obama’s wisdom, those of you who think that hope is in the oldies, you have not realised that the ground under you has shisfted…..we need minds that are in tendum with the morden world not politicians whose only ability is being able to round up marketeers…….Viva young turks….yes we can…

  15. As much as Madam Nonde’s union leadership has been characterized with low grade partisan politics by virtue of the fact that she is a passionate PF cadre and Sata’s 5th concubine, her views on immaturity of many youths is very accurate. Here are our Zambian discussion forums perfect platforms of ideal generations, logical arguments, insights, propositions and critical mass building on issues of common purpose. What do we see, irrationality of the lowest grade and deviances every day beyond humor if not insulting one another as if time awaits this generation.Where is the maturity in someone stationed on the threads 24/7 just to claim no.1, love affairs and soforth? There are real challenges.

  16. The Internet was rolled out to the public in the 1990s, a time the MMD GRZ took over from UNIP but todate (17 years later) our MMD government wings are using yahoo email addresses e.g. the Zambian Embasy in Russia with [email protected] for their daily business. This indicates that they donot even have a website which costs little to maintain for them as a proffessional Zambian Government component.
This is where the youths come in. We have been to school (Grade 12 School Certificate holders) with some of us even further, surely let us use our talents properly before they are taken away from us for failure to use them (see Matthew 25 + Holy Bible). Now is the time, instead of ….

  17. #13 you re right. They re too greedy and selfish. They should retire kaili and give chance to the youth. But kano fye baf***** nga bafwa. Abena Sata, Chalikota na ma t*** yalifota but still wants to be in power.

  18. #31 continued.
… hoping that some Undereducate Standard 4 school drop out will give youths political leadership as if he owns it!
Wake up Zambian Youths, if old folks continue overstaying in leadership, when are you going to be CEOs, Managers, ministers, Presidents, Chairpersons, etc.?
Now is our time as Youths and this is surely our moment to economically develp Zambia so that Zambians can have economic and social independence which has been eratic due to untrainable leadership that has failed to use their experience to understand that it is time to quit politics and leave energetic youths take the lead in bringing normal livelihood to Zambians of all tribes, races, etc.

  19. Its very easy to shift the stage off the feet of careerist politicians. But maturity and artisan knowledge other than this mechanical mind set many are stuck with from mechanical education disciplines is detrimental. There is fixiated-structured thinking here where liberal artisanship is missing.Mathematicians and social scientists are structured by formulars while liberal arts makes you think in an artisan way in given situation. Its no suprising that lawyers, philosophers political and decision scientists reign politically over those with mechanical-structured thinking those are the smartest folks.I studied social science then liberal arts and can testify why the latter produce more leaders.

  20. 32. Last Pwala, please, that tone of language is not desirable on LT. There are many non-Zambians who understand our local languages and visit LT to read news, so let us avoid painting a bad image of our great Nation.
Let us challenge the characters who have put us in this misery through conventional and acceptable norms and/or channels.

  21. Thinking of a politically puritan society of system will not happen.Nowhere in the world is there a political system that is only of and by the youths. Its self inclusion to change things inside out.Obama has emerged President out of his involvement in the DNC politics of 200 years plus.He did not ask that veterans retire first to have a role.If anything, he has found them strong pillars in his administration. An exclusive system you are envisioning is pure wishful thinking. It takes strategy, vision, passion and consistency to achieve things. The old and young will always co-exist.The US system congress and senators have the oldest politicians in the world yet they are going on.

  22. 33. Maestro Hhehhehhehhe continued.
Thus, I would like to urge all youths who can manage to register as voters so that can overwhelmingly give the old recycled politicians red cards in a similar manner like the US Americans did in the 2008 Presidential Elections so that we can have someone brand new at the helm of our country’s leadership in 2011.
Youths, where do you want to be in 5 years time in terms of position? Is it being kabovas, kaponyas, tamangas, streetkids roaming around from sunrise to sunset? Or is it as Parliamentarians, Ministers, Vice Presidents, Presidents, Lecturers, Police Commissioners, Businessmen employing fellow Zambians, Chief Justices, scholarship providers? etc?

  23. Maestro Hhehhehhehhe, like I have said in the past, I will be on you till you change. Ndiwe villager, I want you to grow up since you never did in who ever’s house you were brought up. Have you acquired any manners now? You never had, even bad ones will be ok. Till you change, niku kwete

Enough is enough. I can no longer t o l e r a t e r e c y c l e d politicians (from UNIP to MMD then now themselves) who think that they have a right to give or handle over power. This is a competitive era where we need to beat each other through the mind.

  27. Bloggers, do you now see how misdirected this villager called Maestro Hhehhehhehhe is? I will not give you room nor breath till you change. Change, change, change, Change, change, change. Niku kwete.

  28. 39. Maestro Hhehhehhehhe,

Your cadreship for a none entity HH reveals immaturity and distance from from reality.Catch a new perspective that resonates with critical thinking.HH falls flat on progressive leadership we need.Had HH been visionally youth, he wouldn’t have mortalized tribal political ticket came on.

  29. 40. Maestro Hhehhehhehhe,

Stop dreaming no Government is born out of blogs.Go back home and meet people on the ground doing the sensitisation of your rhetoric.

  30. Bloggers, please respect Maetro HheHhe for his views. We are in a democracy. In fact I personally find his reasoning to be very well meaning and educative. He is honest and does NOT behave like a party cadre. He is willing to listen to divergent views, a culture PF cadres have NEVER had. Respect Maestro and we shall enjoy blogging. I value democratic enlighted debates. God bless you all including PF cadres and your illiterate Sata.

  31. Don´t blame us pliz. You should know that our elder are sailfish as they want everything for themselves. Why is it that people with over 60 years want to continue ruling?

Pliz don´t compare Zed politics to the USA as we are far behind.

  32. #45. The Intelligentia, my man, your line of thinking resonates with mine. Bloggers that take on Maestro Hhehhehhehhe usually do not have data to counter his and so resort to delogatory blogging. This is the imaturity being talked about.

    # 36. Senior Citizen, I found a lot of sense in your posts above. Nice thinking. We need to take our own destiny in our hands. This atitude of wanting the way to be paved for us is whats makes many youths end up being nothings. Great people think outside the box!!!!

I dont need to have the old gurads to retire for me to have space on the arena.

  33. #46, on your question “Why is it that people with over 60 years want to continue ruling?” the answer is that because you allow them to rule. Just check on this blog, do you think these bloggers who support Sata are above 60yrs? NO! these are youths who have no confidence in themselves or in fellow youths and so?????? The old guards roll into power carried by the youths. Isnt it fun how a youth goes into the both, votes for an old finished guy and then starts crying that the old are not giving us space to shape our Country??

  34. If the youths are immature the definition of youth should be extended from 35 years to 90 years . Maturity is a state of mind where an adult chooses to think and provide from himself. Most of these leaders that are advanced in age show the same intellectual as that of people not learned and to make it worse the older they are the less capable they are to think dynamically. Theres an attitude amongst the old that reeks of ‘we know everything and you don’t because you are young and know nothing’.Good examples are plastered on this blog where just because someone is older they think their opinion bears more weight and if anyone disagrees with them then they are young and clueless.

  35. We have alot of them on this blog. I think these youths lack role models to start with and most politicians are to blame for this as they don’t nature the youth in the way the should be. Are young men/women or boys/girls invited to listen to the MPs as they debate in parliament or are they seen as threat?
Joyce is so right that the youth need to stand up and be proactive if they are to take positions in polictics.

  36. LT disable #49. We are in the 21st century and we need civilised people. How can we develop with such illiterate people. I am very disappointed with the PF as a party, its cadres as blind followers and its leader as a finished greed politician. But I am also not happy with MMD’s Mulongoti and the likes of Teta and other immature talkative and illiterate politicians without vison. Let us work together regardless of tribe or colour but on the basis of nothing but our abilities.

  37. #57 Thanks

  38. #18 you comments are well thought through, however like any mortal man you have short comings. 1. nonde has no children.2. you seem to have left zambia for quite a while.Having said this you are a great person. Indeed nonde ,firstly she is not a proffesional. I do concur with you on her being a mouth loud person bravo bro

  39. Of course youths lack maturity! What do you expect when the elderly keep using them as toyboys and mistresses? Keep your shirt on, Ba Nonde and lead by example before you open your pie-hole.

    Weekend ati shani?

  40. With the likes of Ba Maureen, Neni and the Quality of the comment we see bellow each News item, how can you dispute the remarks. These immature guys make the paper look childish. Reasonable people fail to contribute.
Can times do something to block hopeless comments. We want issues and reasoning please

  41. Ba Joyce muleikalafye ngatamukwete ifyakulanda, we are serious about our lives it’s just that tula mitina. Efyomusamba fingi sana what did your fellow elders do to Paul Tembo?

  42. #64, Who are you to show off and think your way of thinking is better than Jelita and Mulenga? Leave people learn to express their emotions, jokingly or not, thats the only way they wil grow.

  43. “He said for a long time now, youths have been used by older politicians only as agents of violence and political orgasim”

  44. #50 I wish to acknowledge and indeed appreciate your ability to reason bravo bro . what we need in zambia is critical analysis and positive thinking.what do i mean? yes this rhetoric we need the youth like me , like any vibrant not bent on insults nor tribal inclination but holistic approach.

  45. See country men and women,it’s not just a question of saying the youths should take over.i think it’s about individual ability, effort, purpose to save the masses in a selfless manner. The US for example is got a resevoir of old guards who push the development frontiers for their nation.Obama for instance chose Joe Biden as his vice, this man is over 60,hilary clinton,a woman of substance is about 60.William gates the defense secretary and the man who should have become president on inagauration day in the event Obama had been asassinated is well over 60.The issue then is that, lets have a systematic way of equiping ourselves so that the leadership resevoir has a span of say 40-75 years.

  46. See,today, the World,s most famous and loved statesman,Nelson Mandela become president at the age of 75,he did his part of uniting the nation and graciously handed over power to Thabo Mbeki who too pushed the SA to unprecented levels. There are also some young presidents like Rawlings of Ghana who made a difference, festus Mogae of Botswana,Bill clinton of the USA.The idea is that lets not have a whosale view or mentality about young leaders taking over.Remember, the MMD in 1991 propounded privatisation without critically looking at its flipside. At times wholesale projection of an idea can lead to disaster. We need a blend of both young and old guards.

  47. While, dominant.what a word….am a younth and i dont agree with those saying we are dominant.we are not counted in this country.look at our govt. all those are grown up topmost and they just share those tuma post among themselves….Ba Nondo when u look at the advarts in the papers today u ll see requarements like someone aged 45 so wats that u are saying…..

  48. Am :o:oconfused,is she Mrs. Nonde or Mrs fimo fimo? She was Joyce Nonde b4 she got married.

Coming to da topic,Mrs Fimo fimo if u got married at 50 wen u r oredy matured namano yalibwelela kubwaice shud nt affect us in any way,we r matured.

  49. Good morning All!!

Maestro fimo fimo was in trouble, i can see. Yaba! Joyce Nonde is now Mrs Joyce Nonde. She just added “Mrs” to her name.

  50. Anyway Joyce NONDE got Married last year at age 50. So I dont know what parental skills she has to nuture the children. I know she is a fearless trade union activist / organiser / official but on the youth development side, she should be the last to condemn the youths. She should offer practical solutions and compel Industry, Govt., etc to come up with programs. Then we shall appreciate her more. batti Chisuma chi mummy.

  51. ba nonde does nt know what she is talkn about.life of nowdays is diferant to the life she grew up. there is alot we youth we face.growing up with out parents(AIDS) is a hard thing.we do all the bad things to survive.

  52. #74 YOU HAVE HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD. THE FACT THAT SHE GOT MARRIED AT THE AGE OF 50 IS TESTIMONY THAT SHE MUST HAVE WASTED HER YOUTH. SO SHE CANNOT GIVE PARENTAL GUIDANCE.

  53. Let her prove her words by her actions becoz maybe her actions, since she is in the limelight are being learnt by the youths. But the youths are the mirror of the homes they come from which are headed by Adults. When youths see the immorallity practiced by their parents, they take it that it is normal and they go ahead and do the same. The respect accorded to a whore mother is not necessarily the same that is confered apon a decent mother. You cant force things to be what they are not. Like begets like. A whore mother might appreciate the respect that a child from a decent family extends to her but that does not mean that she has earned or deserves that respect.

  54. A whore mother may even slap her child for an act she may deem ill mannered by her instincts whilst completely disregarding the reality of her lifestyle. The basis that she believes that she deserves respect may be based on the fact that she is the bread provider regardless of her trade. She believes that her circumstances deserves sympathy but also appreciation. Her situation can be summed up in the following : GIVE RESPECT TO A WHORE which to be effected will need a world wide campaign.

  55. How many adults have exposed indecency to youths yet demanding respect from the same? How many Grown ups are having open affairs whilst demanding respect? How many Grown ups are recklessly abusing privileges whilst demanding respect? Someone has the audacity to stand on the mountaintop and demand respect, that person should prove that by first of all respecting herself.

  56. Its empowerment that the youth needs ( remeber old dogs never learn new tricks) but the older generation is greedy and selfish

I think the above makes sense. The older generation are clinging to money power and connections. (their maturity even cost us the 2010 Olympic Games, did you think it was too playful??)

All the talk of lack of maturity is acceptable: Our civic leaders have nothing to do.

Instead of giving land to Chinese investors and economic immigrants, we could do with some CEEC funding towards youth projects. Where and how do you think the famous Silicon Valley came about? Was it God, or people think they just dreamt?? Nonde is talking nonsense!

    Cheers,

    ZambiaOne

  57. And to quote Peter Tosh “you can’t blame the youth of today” because it is the elders who have created the today

  58. I am prepared to be called imature, a snake, a dog and a baboon rather than join PF and MMD whose leaders moral values have declined worse than a Zimbabwean dollar!!

  59. It is too much to expect some maturity or something sensible from youths whose role models are basketball players, footballers, rappers and Congolese musicians.

The zambian educational system is a mess. Do people seriously think the “salaula” schools called “basics” can produce quality “graduates”? If anything those schools are just churning out chaff. With this situation other countries will lead and Zambia will merely follow.

  60. She is right. The youths of Zed were the ones in the fore front supporting finished old men like Sata instead of rallying behind a young and vibrant man… HH… Like the youths of America supported Obama. One of them even said this about Mc Cain ” I don’t want an old angry man as my president” Youths in Zed ARE VERY DULL.

  61. I hope some of the bloggers here do understand the term, “paper tigers”.
They are fond of writing as though contributing to a book review. This is a blog and the ideas should be small, to the point and precise. Who is going to read a blog that goes on like some book or fiction story. The people who originated this would have allowed for blogs to run in pages if they had hoped for speeches on this blog. I feel if someone has a knack for writing, the dailies in Zambia are almost bereft of nice stories or columns, so why not start a column in one of them and spare us speeches here. What do others feel here.

  62. Nonde its not that we are immature we are just apolitical. This does not entail immaturity.its is incumbent on you and other leaders to inspire and instill in us a sense of responsibility.Include us in your policies and programmes by readying us to take over the mantle only then can have a right to judge us.

  63. Monde, don’t blame the youths, and stop these comparisons of America to zed have you forgotten the witch craft of your elders.

  64. 86. Lady chiza’s legs, your “I am prepared to be called imature, a snake, a dog and a baboon rather than join PF and MMD whose leaders moral values have declined worse than a Zimbabwean dollar!!” is a serious resolve which must be considered by many youths in Zambia.

Together as Zambians, both youths and non-youths, we all shall do the neededful in 2011 tripatite elections.

  67. 73. Ba Moze, I am in no trouble like you wrote “Maestro fimo fimo was in trouble, i can see.”
I am simply doing [-( to those that a :-@ nonsense.
Do you see why former US President G. Bush was consistent with not listening to discussions or having debates with people that don’t reason properly even when you give them clear evidence. So, I am doing what I have to do while I will leave them to insult until they will be tired. This is the best treatment they deserve for I have tried to reason with them but they can’t learn anything due to their currently sick minds. I am hopeful that by praying for them and letting them play the dirty games, one day they will come round.
    Enjoy the show!

  68. Ba Nonde ta babalembele speech bwino. The honorable lady has no clue of what she is talking about. First of O, how many viable youth development programs are run by the government in ZED? Does she know how young Zambians are battling to get life going despite the horrendous sakamustanses they are in? I can tell you even Churches have no idea on how to handle the situation especially ba Pente!!!!

  69. frankly speaking bane youths in zed take longer to mature when compared to some in the west.they take longer to become independent and own a place of their own. we all know someone who is 25 still living at their parents’ home. maybe its to do with the mentality we have.e.g not everyone smiles when an unmarried young lady moves out to set up home on her own. ati ni hule.i know extreme cases of 30 yr-olds who are still dependant.bakaponya na ma conductor so..

  70. 25 years you say, I know somebody who is almost 50 years and still scrounging with parents. The mother still calls him ‘ My Baby’

  71. 109. Saintybabe, I am one of those who relocated from Lusaka, my own home, back my mother’s home because I had to continue with school. Maybe is I was married I would have left a wife running my home or brought her here with me.

We have brilliant and schooled youths in Zed.. the problem is that our system esp political is always recalling retired chaps like VJ, Munkombwe etc..apology for picking my cousins… and the problem is that we trust foreigners alot..

I know Zed young people who presented GRZ with good projects..if it was muzungu…you could have seen a ministerial statements.

Let’s trust ourselves to get the job done..economically or otherwise.
