Chieftainess Lesa opposed to chiefs participation in politics

Chieftainess Lesa of Lamba –lima people of Mpongwe District has opposed the participation of traditional leaders in active politics.

Chieftainess Lesa says chiefs should not be allowed to be take part in politics because this will create confusions in chiefdoms as traditional leaders would be perceived to have lost their neutrality and integrity.

The traditional leader told ZANIS in an interview in Mpongwe today hat chieftainship should not be mixed with political activities because it required traditional leaders to be non-partisan.

Chieftainess Lesa’s sentiments follow a clause in the draft constitution on Article 260 (1) (b) which recommends that chiefs be allowed to participate in political activities and stand for any public office to be included in the final constitution.

Meanwhile, the legislative committee of the National Constitutional Conference, NCC, has reportedly allowed chiefs to be nominated to become members of parliament.

This was reportedly approved during the on –going sittings last Friday, the members agreed that there was need for chiefs to be allowed to debate issues affecting them.

The committee however resolved that chiefs should not be subjected to an election but be nominated by the president.

  1. I actually concur with her.. Most of these people balikwata imiti, now they take it mu parliament.. [-(<):)8-x8-}

  2. I am telling you things are changing fast in Zambia, this time I don’t think there is any Chief or thief who has no political inclination. Its just that they do it in secrete, let them participate so that they face the political battles. When we tell them to be non partisan they think we are being unfair to them. They will finish their Ng’ombe ku makampeni.

  3. Ba siyeni ba joine ndale ba za tong’ola menso monga ba lunza njuga. Anso kulibe ku ba chita appoint chabe they should sweat for the seat 8-|/:):o

  4. #14 Ba Monze, you have made me laugh, ‘Ati tizayamba kubatukana’ I can imagine that, plus a lot of them have already weaker points to capitalise on such that after loosing an election even his subjects will not be able to welcome him/her again in his own village. :o:d/[-(

  5. Chiefs are a respected group of people that i wouldnt want to involve themselves in politics. They will some how influence their subordinates decisions and also they will become exposed to all amnner of redicule and insults which is a taboo in Zambia.

Lets them concentrate on the house of chiefs and probably find better ways they can partner with government in the running and developing of zambian issues

  6. I like the position of the Chief of the Lamba-lima people. In fact, on “Chieftainess Lesa says chiefs should not be allowed to be take part in politics because this will create confusions in chiefdoms as traditional leaders would be perceived to have lost their neutrality and integrity”, this is great but President RB Banda in his campaign and election to Zambian Presidency clearly misused the Chiefs who supported him by acknowledging their support to claim that he was the most popular candidate.
On nominating selected Chiefs to MP positions, this is ok as long as the MP nominated Chiefs relinguish their Chief-ness to their group of people as they are normal Zambians too. This would help.

  7. 23. your flag Maestro Hhehhehhehhe continued.

However, subjects of the nominated Chiefs will definitely be corrupted into voting or supporting to the President who nominated their Chief to a political position naturally because of being ill-educated and/or having their minds corrupted.

Nevertherless, this is alright as social workers are expected to sensitise all Zambia people who vote on what their vote really is or means to their own well-being.

  8. Greedy and poverty are two things that will drive our chiefs in to active politics. Most of our chiefs are wallowing in abject poverty, and when they see the so called politician driving posh cars around, they feel that is the only way to liberaty themselves from oozing poverty. Now,imaging Chief Litunga contestimg Mongu central constitutency or chief Chikwanda going for Mpika central with me ,and i bet him clean. It will mean people have question and rejected his poor leadership,in other words he should also hand over the chietainship to me.

  9. Let them get involved and we shall treat them like any other politician. umuchinshi nishi mwapwa but if they want to be respected, then let them stay away from dirt games (politics)

  10. I truly dont believe they can run affairs of their kingdom and those of the country, why should they anyway.

They must choose one, but not both.

  11. Nizanu izo! Titikwana ka? Kulibe ati, “me am a chief”. In politics, we will call you what we like. If RB can be Nyama Soya (and educated), what more some of you (uneducated)? Lwenu. Nabengile mu ring mukwayi! 😕
Tatwaba lazy. Infact, the more the merrier!!

  12. I see nothing wrong with a chief becoming an active politician and even a head of state if he has all it takes. BTW Mandela was a son of a Zulu chief.

  13. 29. Nine Chale

You can not be serious, why should they do both, Mandale is the special case, not izy nfumu zatu.

  14. what kind of rubbish is this.any chief with an ounce of self respect should not involve themselves in politics.how cah there subjects respect them knowing there are paid up members of a corrupt regime.is this another way of legalising BLOCK VOTING by the back door.pliz stay out of ploitics if just for appearance…

  15. They are individuals with a right to contribute to the nation even through politics. they have very little powers and influence as chiefs, and they should be entitled to participate. Though they should be prepared for the political field and its dirt.

  16. WELL SPOKEN CHIEF, AT LEAST U HAVE RESTORED MY CONFIDENCE IN CHIEFS THOUGH NOT ALL i.e MPEZENI, CHITIMUKULU THESE EXCLUDED. IF A CHIEF WANTS TO INVOLVE IN PARTISAN POLITICS LET THAT CHIEF RELINGUISH THE THRONE, PERIOD.

  17. Hats off for this lady. How come the country is devoid of leaders like her. Men and women drafting the constitution are a waste of time and space.

  18. History repeats itself. It will be like that time when we had members of the central committee who happened to be chiefs. Believe me, chiefs lost there respect!

In case you don’t know, about 75% of NCC members are from government related offices who are they to make sure that the constitution is driven in the way the govt wants it to be.

Remember, RB is UNIP. Chiefs in politics is UNIP era so that is where we are going. Ala tukalamituka mwe mfumu. RB’s plans are very primitive, he want to be nominating chiefs as MP’s so that in return they subjects give him votes so that he become ‘long live KWINDI (RB).’ zedians wake up KWINDI alicenjela! But a monkey is 5 times!

  19. HPJ
Its quite unfortunate that the majority of our contributors are in support of the clause that the legislative committee of the National Constitutional Conference, NCC, has reportedly allowed chiefs to be nominated to become members of parliament.Chiefs are non-partisan and ought to be impartial to politics. However, their being nominated as MPs will subject them to the evils of Zambian politics (Bootlicking)…Lets think again on this one!! 🙁

  20. The Chief is a very wise man. If they going to be nominated how many and wich chiefs and what is criteria. Politics in Zambia are full of insults. What happens to a chief who loses his seat to the opposition(Assume all chiefs will only stand on MMD)will that chief command respect. Just strengthen the House of Chiefs and ensure chiefs are paid well and on time. Tryin to manuplate them will only cuase more confusion in an already confused country.

  21. Good thought, Chieftainess.
You can contribute to national issues through the HOUSE OF CHIEFS.
